Controlled synthesis of upconverting nanoparticles/CuS yolk–shell nanoparticles for in vitro synergistic photothermal and photodynamic therapy of cancer cells

Chen-Xi Huang,Hua-Jian Chen,Fei Li,Wan-Ni Wang,Dong-Dong Li,Xian-Zhu Yang,Zhao-Hua Miao,Zheng-Bao Zha,Yang Lu,Hai-Sheng Qian

Synergistic photodynamic and photothermal therapy of cancer cells is of considerable scientific and technological interest. In this work, we demonstrate a sacrificial template strategy to fabricate yolk–shell nanoparticles combining upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and CuS nanoparticles. Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles of NaYF4:30% Yb,1% Nd,0.5% Er@NaYF4:20% Nd (also denoted as UCNPs) have been prepared as 808 nm light excited remote-controlled nanotransducers for in vitro cancer cell treatment. The upconversion fluorescence of the as-prepared UCNPs@CuS yolk–shell nanoparticles is completely quenched under the excitation of an 808 nm laser, which demonstrates that the energy transfer between the UCNPs and CuS is very efficient. In addition, the as-prepared UCNPs@CuS nanoparticles show higher production ability for hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) compared to CuS hollow nanospheres of similar size. In particular, the excited shell layer (CuS) showed an enhanced photothermal effect while producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) including singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) after being exposed to near infrared (NIR) light. Thus, the as-prepared UCNPs@CuS yolk–shell nanoparticles exhibited the synergistic effect of photothermal and photodynamic therapy of cancer cells, which resulted in significant cell death after exposure to an 808 nm laser. The synthetic strategy will provide an alternative method to fabricate other UCNP based core–shell nanoparticles for potential and important applications in bionanotechnology including theranostics, multimodal treatment, magnetic resonance imaging-guided photodynamic therapy, etc.

Dual Application: p-CuS/n-ZnS Nanocomposite Construction for High-Efficiency Colorimetric Determination and Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline in Water

Li Zhang,Linhong Ge,Lamei Deng,Xinman Tu

Herein, CuS was incorporated with ZnS to form a novel nanocomposite via cation exchange, and the product was then employed for dual application of the colorimetric determination and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) in water. The formed p–n heterojunction provided an improved gap width and electron mobility, which could rapidly catalyze H2O2to produce plenty of •OH, supporting a color conversion with TMB. Meanwhile, the addition of TC could lead to the further enhancement in colorimetric signal, and the distinction level was sensitive to the target amount. Additionally, under light conditions, the p-CuS/n-ZnS could produce •O2−, •OH, and h+through photocatalysis, and these ions could degrade the TC via oxidation. In the colorimetric determination of TC, the signal responses were obtained within 10 min, and the detection limit was 20.94 nM. The recovery rates were 99% and 106% for the water samples from Ganjiang river. In the photocatalytic degradation, the TC was degraded by 91% within 120 min, which was threefold that of ZnS. Meanwhile, the morphology feature of the p-CuS/n-ZnS remained after multiple uses, suggesting a favorable material stability. This strategy provides application prospects for the monitoring and control of antibiotics in water. Keywords:p–n heterojunction;tetracycline;colorimetric determination;photocatalysis;degradation

Morphology Adjustment and Optimization of CuS as Enzyme Mimics for the High Efficient Colorimetric Determination of Cr(VI) in Water

Xinman Tu,Linhong Ge,Lamei Deng,Li Zhang

Metal sulfide is often utilized as a catalyzed material to form colorimetric response system for some heavy metal detection. While the aggregation effect and conventional morphology limited the catalyzed efficiency. Herein, a robust method based on morphology adjustment was proposed to improve the dispersibility and catalytic performance of CuS. The results demonstrated when the solvent ratio of ethylene glycol and dimethyl sulfoxide arrived at 3:1, it displayed an optimal structure which is like a patulous flower. Meanwhile, an optimal surface binding energy (ΔE) of 120.1 kcal/mol was obtained via theoretical calculation model. The flower-like structure caused a 2-fold increase in the catalytic level. Subsequently, the CuS was employed to make colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) in water. The assay results exhibited a linear range of the Cr(VI) from 60 to 340 nM, the limit of detection was 1.07 nM. In the practical tests for Qianhu lake water, the spiked recoveries were 93.6% and 104% with the RSD of 4.71% and 3.08%. Therefore, this CuS-based colorimetric method possesses a satisfactory application prospect for the Cr(VI) determination in water. Keywords:CuS;morphology adjustment;solvent ratio;Cr(VI);colorimetric detection

In-situ construction of sequential heterostructured CoS/CdS/CuS for building “electron-welcome zone” to enhance solar-to-hydrogen conversion

Yilei Li,Qing Zhao,Yang Zhang,Yunchao Li,Louzhen Fan,Fa-tang Li,Xiaohong Li

Photocatalysis has been facing challenging problems especially the inefficient photocarriers transfer at the interfaces. Here, based on K sp difference, we prepare the sequential heterojunction of CoS/CdS/CuS via sequential cation exchange strategy, and propose the concept of "electron-welcome zone", where the point-to-point contact can be formed at the interface, thus providing continuous electron transport channels. HAADF-STEM EDS line test indicates the formation of designed structures, and the p/n junction is confirmed by band structure and Mott-Schottky analysis. Theoretical calculation indicates that CoS reduces the Gibbs free energy of the reaction. TRPL spectra show that the existence of "electron welcome zone" greatly improves the lifetime of electrons. This sequential structure enable the optimal H 2 production rate to reach 123.2 mmol g −1 h −1 with AQE of 45.6%, which is among the highest values of CdS-based photocatalysts. This work opens new way to efficient photogenerated carrier transfer channel for solar-energy conversion.

Hollow CuS microflowers anchored porous carbon composites as lightweight and broadband microwave absorber with flame-retardant and thermal stealth functions

Xiang Zhang,Lei Cai,Zhen Xiang,Wei Lu

At present, the development of lightweight and wideband microwave absorbing materials with stable infrared stealth property and adaptable to complex environments has become the key to multi-modal stealth technology . Herein, hollow CuS microflowers were self-assembled on biomass-derived porous carbon in situ to realize the multifunctions of microwave absorption, flame retardance and thermal stealth. The multicomponent synergistic effect combined with unique microarchitecture triggered the multiple polarization effects , multiple reflection and scattering as well as conduction loss in the PC@CuS composite. As a result, the PC 800 @CuS sample exhibited an optimal RL min of −61.5 dB and an exceptionally wide EAB of 7.8 GHz with the filling ratio of only 10%. In addition, the PC@CuS composite also exhibited superior flame-retardant properties by virtue of its distinctive porous structure . Meanwhile, the uniform distribution of CuS particles played a vital role in enhancing the overall infrared absorption efficiency, thereby obtaining stable and highly-effective infrared stealth performance comparable to commercial products. This work shed light on the development of high-efficiency MAs with multifunctions in a facile and low-cost manner.

Full-spectrum light-driven phase change microcapsules modified by CuS-GO nanoconverter for enhancing solar energy conversion and storage capability

Xiaoyue Fan,Xiaolin Qiu,Lixin Lu,Binglin Zhou

Due to the low direct thermal effect of solar irradiation , conventional phase-change microcapsules have poor solar energy utilization capability. To increase the solar-to-thermal energy storage efficiency, in this work, we reported a light-driven microencapsulated n-eicosane based on a crystalline TiO 2 shell coated by graphene oxide (GO)-based copper monosulfide (CuS) (CuS-GO) nanoconverter. Due to the combination of local surface plasma resonance (LSPR), semiconductor and synergetic effects, the CuS-GO nanoconverter conferred full-spectrum solar light-to-thermal conversion capability on the microcapsule system. The resultant n-eicosane@TiO 2 @CuS-GO microcapsules achieved high full-spectrum solar-to-thermal storage efficiency (97.1%) under stimulated solar light with no compromise of the latent heat density (212.0 ± 1.2 J/g). Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of n-eicosane@TiO 2 @CuS-GO (0.985 ± 0.004 W/(m·K)) significantly increased by 39.9% compared with that of n-eicosane@TiO 2 . These results indicate that this light-driven microcapsule with superior properties is advantageous for direct solar-to-thermal energy utilization applications.

A colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode chiral sensor based on CuS-L-histidine for optical resolution of aspartic acid isomers

Haowei Huang,Tai Wen,Junyao Li,Laidi Xu,Wenrong Cai,Yong Kong

As the chiral source, L-histidine (L-His) is used for the decoration of copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs), which is further utilized to fabricate a colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode chiral sensor for the optical resolution of aspartic acid (Asp) isomers. Since the optical activity of L-His is consistent with L-Asp, the CuS-L-His shows higher affinity for L-Asp than D-Asp, and thus more 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) is captured by CuS-L-His/L-Asp through electrostatic attractions compared with CuS-L-His/D-Asp. Owing to the superior peroxidase-like activity of CuS NPs, the captured TMB can be catalyzed to blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 , and thus the optical resolution of the Asp isomers can be realized by the colorimetric mode. In addition, the nanosized CuS has outstanding photothermal conversion ability, and the combination with Asp isomers may lead to the decrease in temperature. Since the decrease in the temperature of CuS-L-His/L-Asp is more pronounced than that of CuS-L-His/D-Asp, the Asp isomers can also be optically resolved by the photothermal mode. The proposed dual-mode chiral sensor is more attractive than conventional single-mode chiral sensors, since it can provide higher accuracy for the optical resolution.

Porous hollow CuS nanospheres with prominent peroxidase-like activity prepared in large scale by a one-pot controllable hydrothermal step

Qun Wei Shu,Chun Mei Li,Peng Fei Gao,Ming Xuan Gao,Cheng Zhi Huang

CuS materials with peroxidase activity have been prepared but greatly limited by the large dosage and low peroxidase activity. In this paper, porous hollow CuS nanospheres with a variety of sizes were fabricated by one-pot method based on a facile template-assisted hydrothermal approach. The size of the porous hollow CuS nanospheres could be simply tuned by adjusting the molar ratios of reactants, the reaction temperature, and time. The as-prepared porous hollow CuS nanospheres were demonstrated to exhibit more prominent intrinsic peroxidase-like activity using TMB as a peroxidase substrate in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This is a significant comparison to previous reports, demonstrating that the new developed synthetic porous hollow CuS nanospheres can be a new kind of candidate for peroxidase mimics, and the nanospheres are promising for applications in biosensors, environmental monitoring, and so on.

Hydrogen peroxide activation by in-situ-loaded CuS/biochar photocatalyst: The critical role of sulfur species in regulating active species

Dengyu Ying,Yanfen Fang,Huibin Niu,Nannan Du,Mingzhu Chen,Rong Yan,Yingping Huang,Yunzhi Tan,Shaobin Wang

Although metal sulfides have demonstrated exceptional catalytic properties in Fenton-like reactions, little is known about the role of sulfur species in transforming highly active species responsible for degradation organics. CuS (∼12 nm) nano-capsules embedded in the biochar (CuS-BC) were prepared from copper-rich biomass, which could activate H 2 O 2 (4 mM) and completely remove tetracycline (TC) from water within 210 min. Compared with BC/H 2 O 2 /Vis system, the degradation efficiency of TC in the CuS-BC/H 2 O 2 /Vis system was improved by 14.8 times, and the utilization efficiency of H 2 O 2 was improved by 86 times. The whole degradation process of TC can be divided into two stages: quasi-first-order reaction kinetics ( k obs  = 0.015 min −1 ) and zero-order reaction kinetics ( k obs  = 6.457 mol/L/min). Within 90 min, H 2 O 2 is activated to produce hydroxyl radicals ( OH) by surface Cu 2+ on CuS and photogenerated electrons (e − ) generated from CuS photoexcitation, which react immediately with surface SO 3 2− to form SO 4 − . After 90 min, Cu III -peroxo species ( Cu III -O 2 2− -(SO 3 2− ) n ) formed by electron transfer between Cu I , O 2 , and surface SO 3 2− oxidize the remaining 50 % TC through interface interaction. CuS-BC catalyst exhibits excellent photostability and suitability for actual antibiotic wastewater. Overall, this study offers mechanistic insight into the role of sulfur species in the sulfide-based Fenton reactions.

Preparation and characteristic of palmitic acid/flower-shaped CuS composite phase change material for effective heat storage and photothermal conversion

Ting Yan,Xiao-Le Chang,Ying-Jie Huo,Zhi-Hui Li,Wei-Guo Pan

Designing and synthesizing the excellent heat storage and photothermal integrated composite phase change materials (PCMs) is an effective strategy for solar energy utilization. This work focuses on two kinds of CuS (cuboidal and 3D flower-shaped) with different morphology were designed as substrates and photothermal materials, and PA/F–CuS and PA/C–CuS composite PCMs have been prepared by melt-blending and vacuum impregnation method. Through SEM and pore structure characterization as well as leakage testing, it is proved that 3D layered flower-shaped CuS not only exposes the large specific surface area and rich adsorption sites, but also 2D thin layers can perform multiple reflections to improve the utilization rate of solar energy. The flower-shaped CuS is more suitable for the supporting material. Noteworthy, the latent heat of PA/F–CuS can reach 226.3 J/g, and the thermal conductivity is 0.3447 W/(m·K). Furthermore, compared with pure PA, the photothermal property of PA/F–CuS increased by 49.22–84.59%, and the photothermal conversion efficiency can reach 70.3%. This work provides an innovative idea for the design and manufacture of composite PCMs related to medium and low temperature solar energy storage, and has broad application potential in the field of thermal energy storage such as solar energy utilization and building insulation materials.

Sulfur vacancy-rich CuS nanoparticles anchored on N-doped carbon nanofibers for electrochemical and colorimetric dual-mode sensing of hydroquinone

Xiangwei Yuan,Yao Jin,Li Xu,Lian Ou,Junchun Guo,Qian Wang,Xiaoli Xiong

Efficient and sensitive detection of hydroquinone (HQ) in aquatic environments is paramount for environmental and human health protection. In this study, the CuS nanoparticles are successfully anchored on N-doped carbon nanofibers (CuS/N-CNFs) by electrospinning and sulfuration strategies. The resultant CuS/N-CNFs nanozyme catalyst exhibits abundant sulfur vacancies and mesoporous carbon structures, resulting in excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of HQ. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrates significant peroxisase-like activity, which can catalyze colorless 3,3′, 5,5′ −tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The mechanism investigations reveal that •OH radical serves as the main active species in this process. Based on these unique properties, a novel electrochemical and colorimetric dual-mode sensor is constructed for HQ detection with linear ranges of 1–614 μM and 1–57 μM, respectively, and the limit of detections (LODs) of 0.293 and 0.621 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the established HQ sensor platform is expected to be potential candidate for practical applications due to its satisfactory sensitivity and selectivity in real water samples.
