Divergent Performances of ZIF-67-Derived Fe, Co, and FeCo Catalysts in Peroxymonosulfate Activation for Ciprofloxacin Degradation

Li Huanxuan,Wei Xueheng,Gao Xing,Liu Chen,Li Ning,Xu Chen,Huang Jingang,Liu Xiuyan,Xu Shaodan

The degradation of antibiotics remains a major and persistent challenge in wastewater treatment. This study reports the synthesis of three distinct catalysts from a zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) precursor through pyrolysis at 800 °C, namely ZIF-67(Fe)-800, ZIF-67(Co)-800, and ZIF-67(FeCo)-800. Comprehensive characterization (e.g., X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopy analyses) confirmed their graphitic carbon matrix, specific metallic phases, and unique polyhedral morphologies. These catalysts were employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. Strikingly divergent catalytic performances were observed, with CIP degradation rate constants of 0.0027, 0.0731, and 0.0504 min –1 for ZIF-67(Fe)-800, ZIF-67(Co)-800, and ZIF-67(FeCo)-800, respectively. Furthermore, the bimetallic ZIF-67(FeCo)-800 demonstrated consistently inferior performance in activating both peroxydisulfate and sodium percarbonate compared to PMS, resulting in significantly lower CIP degradation rates of 52% and 87%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations using electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching tests revealed that hydroxyl radical ( · OH), sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the dominant reactive species in both the ZIF-67(Fe)-800/PMS and ZIF-67(Co)-800/PMS systems. In contrast, the ZIF-67(FeCo)-800/PMS system operated via a distinct pathway, primarily generating SO 4 •− , accompanied by · OH, 1 O 2 , and superoxide radicals (O 2 •− ). Notably, H 2 PO 4 − and HCO 3 − exhibited strong inhibitory effects on CIP degradation, while SO 4 2− and CH 3 COO − led to modest rate enhancements. Overall, this work provides a rational framework for designing MOF-derived catalysts and highlights their potential for application in advanced oxidation processes aimed at removing pharmaceutical pollutants.

Triple benefit: transforming acidic mine drainage into efficient iron-based polymetallic nanoparticles used for catalytic degradation of norfloxacin

Zibin Pan,Qinghua Chen,Zuliang Chen

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a significant environmental threat, necessitating effective treatment and resource recovery strategies. This study explores the innovative synthesis of iron-based polymetallic nanoparticles (Fe PMNPs) from AMD using tea extracts, and their application as heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). Under optimal conditions (Fe PMNPs dosage = 0.3 g/L, reaction time = 2h, pH = 3.6, T = 298 K, H 2 O 2 concentration = 10 mM, and initial NOR concentration = 20 mg/L), the Fe PMNPs achieved 100 % NOR degradation efficiency and a reaction rate constant of 0.075 min −1 , maintaining over 90 % efficiency across a broad pH range (3.6 to 9.1). This demonstrates outstanding reaction performance compared to most materials synthesized by chemical and waste utilization methods. Comprehensive characterizations revealed the complex structure of Fe PMNPs, incorporating organic carbon, Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , and Cu from both AMD and tea extracts. These components synergistically activated H 2 O 2 , generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as 1 O 2 , SO − 4 and OH, which facilitated NOR degradation through both radical and non-radical pathways. Three distinct degradation pathways were identified based on computational results and transformation product analysis. This study offers novel insights into AMD treatment and waste resource utilization, demonstrating an environmentally friendly approach to catalytic NOR degradation using Fe PMNPs derived from AMD.

A glutathione depletion-activated near-infrared nanoprobe based on valence engineering of molybdenum and cerium for boosting tumor photoacoustic diagnosis and cascade therapy

Min He,Lixian Huang,Caiying Li,Yang Wang,Yuzhen Ma,Jinzhe Liang,Shulin Zhao

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging-guided tumor treatment can realize the accurate diagnosis of cancers and the visual monitoring of the treatment process. For this purpose, a tumor microenvironment (TME)-activated cerium-doped polyoxometalate (Ce-POM) nanoprobe was developed for PA imaging-guided diagnosis and boosted cascade therapy. Mo 6+ in the Ce-POM structure reacts with glutathione (GSH), which is enriched in the TME, resulting in a broad near-infrared absorption peak (650–1300 nm) for tumor-specific PA imaging. In addition, Ce-POM exhibits peroxidase-like activity, which can catalyze the Fenton-like reaction of Ce 3+ with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in the TME to form hydroxyl radicals ( · OH) for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Ce-POM reduced antioxidative capacity by depleting GSH in tumor cells, and 808-nm laser irradiation promoted its reaction with H 2 O 2 to generate abundant · OH, thus improving the CDT efficacy. The GSH consumption in tumor tissues also enhanced the photothermal conversion capacity of Ce-POM, leading to a rapid temperature rise to more than 50°C at tumor sites, realizing efficient photothermal treatment. The Ce-POM nanoprobe enabled PA visualization and effective cascade therapy in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice, providing a theranostic platform for PA imaging-guided tumor ablation.

Self-cleaned surface of vanadium boride for long-lasting and boosted Fenton oxidation

Yiying Sun,Huaimin Wang,Meng Shuang,Chenying Zhou,Yiming Sun,Heng Zhang,Yang Liu,Peng Zhou,Bo Lai

Coupling extra electron supply with iron-mediated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is an efficient strategy for long-lasting oxidation of organic contaminants in environmental remediation. Many subsequent attempts have been made, such as homogeneous catalysts and metal catalysts, of which secondary organic pollution and surface passivation layers limit their application. In this work, metal borides as co-catalysts can efficiently accelerate the Fenton reaction by firmly sacrificing electrons to Fe(III) reduction. Among multiple metallic borides, vanadium boride (VB 2 ) performs superiorly as dual active sites to solve the Fe(III) cycle dilemma and quickly generate hydroxyl radicals via Fenton reaction for almost completely eliminating almost carbamazepine (CBZ) in VB 2 /Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 . Characterization analysis and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation unveil that the synergistic effect of V and B on the surface of VB 2 makes Fe-O bonds of FeOH 2+ weaker (from 173.8 pm to 178.4 pm) to produce more active Fe(III) species. And meanwhile, active Fe(III) can be rapidly reduced into Fe(II) on the surface of VB 2 and then be completely released into solution for subsequent Fenton reaction and hydroxyl radical generation. More importantly, VB 2 performs steadily and efficiently for 7th consecutive test in VB 2 /Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 to degrade more than 95% CBZ, resulting from the self-cleaning surface of VB 2 to expose reactive regions for persistent electron sacrifice and sustainably stimulative Fenton oxidation. Therefore, this research offers the detailed fundamental perception into the genesis of VB 2 as well as a novel electron donor for boosting Fenton oxidation towards water remediation.

Tuning the heterostructure improves the catalytic activity of recyclable nanozymes for efficient absorption and degradation of norfloxacin-contaminated water

Yanning Zheng,Dankui Liao,Bimei Xie,Jinlei Sun,Jianhua Sun,Zhangfa Tong,Guangzhi Zhou

Effective removal of antibiotic residues from water is crucial for maintaining balance and cleanliness in the ecological environment. To achieve this, we conducted a study on the development of a highly efficient catalyst from the in-situ growth of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped hollow porous carbon spheres (Fe 3 O 4 @N-HollCS). We controlled the in-situ growth time to optimize its performance. Material characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the improved catalytic performance of Fe 3 O 4 @N-HollCS is due to electron transfer from the graphitic-N in N-HollCS to the catalytic interface of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Fe 3 O 4 @N-HollCS, with an ordered mesoporous structure and high specific surface area, had remarkable adsorption capacity for NOR antibiotics, with an enrichment efficiency exceeding 60% within 10 min. Moreover, the Fe 3 O 4 @N-HollCS degraded more than 90% of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, especially norfloxacin (NOR), which was eliminated within 60 min. The Fe 3 O 4 @N-HollCS also exhibited stable catalytic recycling ability within 10 magnetic separations. Fukui function predicted the sensitive sites of NOR, and we proposed potential degradation pathways. Ecological structure activity relationship model evaluation showed that the intermediate produced by Fe 3 O 4 @N-HollCS degradation of NOR has low levels of ecotoxicity. Overall, Fe 3 O 4 @N-HollCS catalysts have great potential for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Photocatalytic imines synthesis integrated with H2 evolution over Ni doped Mn0.25Cd0.75S catalyst

Xiao-Juan Li,Hai-Tao Wan,Ming-Yu Qi,Chang-Long Tan,Zi-Rong Tang

Photocatalytic selective organic transformations coupled with hydrogen (H 2 ) generation under anaerobic conditions is a promising alternative to tackle the challenges of global energy scarcity and green synthesis. In this work, we report the synthesis and application of Ni doped Mn 0.25 Cd 0.75 S (MCS-Ni) composites for efficient selective dehydrocoupling of amines into imines and H 2 . The optimal MCS-Ni composite displays markedly enhanced activities for imines and H 2 generation, which are 7.9 and 11.5 times as high as those of pristine MCS, respectively. The Ni doping modulates the electronic structure of MCS, which improves the light-harvesting abilities and inhibits the recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, thereby remarkably improving the photocatalytic performance of the MCS-Ni composite. Furthermore, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique reveals that carbon centered radicals are the critical intermediates in the amine oxidation reaction. This work is promising to provide inspiration towards the rational construction of metal doped semiconductor composite photocatalysts with effective utilization of photo-generated electrons and holes for the coproduction of clean H 2 fuel and high-value added chemicals in a collaborative photoredox reaction.

Photodynamic antibacterial property of g-C3N4 formulated dental resin composite

Ming Liu,Hao Yang,Daixing Zhang,Yingjie Yu,Xiaoping Yang,Qing Cai

The occurrence of secondary caries associated with the polymerization shrinkage of dental resin composite repairing is mainly due to the resin lacking of bacteria-killing ability to counteract bacterial colonization at the tooth-resin interface. Photodynamic therapy against bacterial infections paves a new way for developing novel antibacterial dental resin composites. Herein, a yellowish graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is synthesized via thermal polycondensation of melamine and functions as photoactive filler for resin composites in oral application. Upon exposed to visible light, the g-C 3 N 4 would generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill bacteria, that Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Streptococcus mutans ( S. mutans ) almost completely die within 30 min. As the g-C 3 N 4 mixed into photocurable bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) at 5 wt%, the resulted composite remains high S. aureus and S. mutans killing rates (> 99 %), even supplemented with extra 65 wt% Schott® dental glass powders. The mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the resin composite are not influenced with the addition of g-C 3 N 4 . Overall, this resin composite with excellent photodynamic antibacterial capacity displays significant potential for dental restoration application.

Ultrasensitive Hydrogen Peroxide Detection in Leafy Vegetables Using a Dual Chelate Metal Synergistic MOFzymes Biosensor

Jin Xu,Zhaoyang Ding,Anqi Ji,Zuyao Fu,Jing Xie

Although various MOFzymes have been used for H2O2 detection, their application in leafy vegetables remains limited. This was primarily due to the interference of complex matrices in leafy vegetables, which affected the detection process. Additionally, the free catalytic metal in MOFzymes could lead to color fading, resulting in unstable and time-consuming reactions. In this study, inspired by the multiactive sites and high selectivity of iron porphyrin-based MOFzymes, along with enhanced stability by chelated iron, we developed a highly sensitive and selective MOFzymes PCN222(Fe)-Gly(Fe)2. This enzyme used zirconium as the metal center, iron porphyrin chelated iron as the organic ligand, and ferrous glycine as a modifier. While the advantages of MOFzymes were retained, the synergistic impact and internal Fenton-like reaction improved the reaction rate, leading to a remarkable 310.2% increase in catalytic velocity. In field testing environments, the H2O2 content in Pakchoi seedling leaves could be determined within 100 s. In addition, the sensor demonstrated practical utility in predicting the shelf life and freshness of Pakchoi seedlings.

Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation over Cobalt-Encapsulated Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Hollow Nanospheres toward Tetracycline Degradation: Performance and Catalytic Mechanism

Jin Qian,Sai Bai,Guoping Xiang,Dandan Zhang,Junmei Zhou,Minxian Cheng,Xiaohong Zhao,Xinying Chen,Yichu Zhang,Yueping Bao,Xiangning Xu

In this study, cobalt-encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon hollow nanospheres (Co@NCs) were synthesized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and tetracycline (TC) degradation. Co@NCs synthesized at a high pyrolysis temperature exhibited relatively higher graphitic N and C═C contents, which effectively regulated the electron density of Co sites, enhancing the PMS activation efficiency. In the Co@NCs-900/PMS system, remarkable TC removal efficiency (97.14%, kobs = 0.179 min–1) and TOC removal (63.62%) were achieved within 60 min. Based on the quenching tests, EPR technology, and electrochemical measurements, a synergistic radical and nonradical pathway was unveiled, with SO4•–, 1O2, and ETP dominated. Co@NCs-900/PMS showed efficient catalytic performance and practical application potentials without interference from organic and inorganic compounds under the experimental background. Additionally, over 80% TC removal could be achieved after the seven-cycle catalytic reaction and showed negligible Co2+ leaching, indicating superior recyclability. Chemical analysis and DFT calculation revealed that PMS adsorption and activation could be strengthened by modulating the electron density with Co and N serving as the active sites. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the incorporation of metal sites on N-doped carbonaceous catalysts for Fenton-like reactions in water purification applications.

Near-Infrared Light-Responsive Upconversion Nanoparticles Supported Elemental Selenium for Combination Tumor Therapy: Selenium Therapy, Photocatalytic Therapy, and “AND” Logic-Gated Chemotherapy

Hua Yan,Chunfei Dai,Xingkun Luan,Hang Li,Chen Wang,Xiaona Li,Xuezhong Du

Multimodal tumor therapy based on “all-in-one” nanoplatforms enhances therapeutic efficacy, simplifies the construction process, and improves material utilization. Elemental selenium was successfully supported on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) to constitute the near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive UCNP@Se heterostructures for the first time. Under 980 nm irradiation, the UCNP@Se heterostructures could not only produce holes and superoxide radicals •O2– but also catalyze the generation of hydroxyl radicals •OH by highly elevated levels of H2O2 in tumor cells to kill the tumor cells. In addition to the superior photocatalytic performance, elemental selenium itself also exhibited inherent inhibition activity against tumor cells. On the basis of the binding of anthracycline anticancer drugs such as doxorubicin (DOX) to the supported elemental selenium through Cu2+ bridging coordination, the UCNP@Se–Cu-DOX drug delivery system was constructed. The introduction of Cu2+ not only improved the efficient loading of DOX but also achieved the “AND” logic-controlled release of DOX under the combined stimuli of low pH and overexpressed glutathione (GSH) in tumor cells. Moreover, the loaded Cu2+ reacted with the overexpressed GSH to generate the active species CuII-GSSG upon NIR light irradiation, which further promoted tumor cell apoptosis. The NIR light-responsive UCNP@Se–Cu-DOX drug delivery system achieved the combination tumor therapy of selenium therapy, photocatalytic therapy, and logic-gated chemotherapy and has great potential applications in tumor therapy.

Rationally Assembling Different Surface Functionalized Carbon Dots for Enhanced Near-infrared Tumor Photothermal Therapy

Xue Wu,Yupeng Liu,Bingzhe Wang,Lingyun Li,Zhenjian Li,Qingcheng Wang,Quansheng Cheng,Guichuan Xing,Songnan Qu

Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as promising photothermal agents for near-infrared (NIR)-mediated tumor therapy due to their excellent biocompatibility and tunable optical properties. However, it is still unclear how to precisely control their assembly behavior to enhance NIR absorption and photothermal conversion efficiency. In this work, we present a hyper-assembled electron donor/acceptor CDs complex (S-d/a-CDs), constructed by integrating electron-donating CDs (d-CDs) with electron-withdrawing CDs (a-CDs). This configuration significantly enhances the NIR absorption capacity of S-d/a-CDs. Under 740 nm laser irradiation, S-d/a-CDs achieve a remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency (PTCE) of 65.8%. S-d/a-CDs exhibit negligible cytotoxicity and effective tumor accumulation capacity through intravenous administration, enabling complete tumor elimination after NIR laser irradiation. To our knowledge, this study is the first to exploit synergistic assembles of two types of CDs for photo-physical property engineering, establishing a groundbreaking paradigm for the development of advanced NIR-triggered photothermal materials.

Significant enhancement of piezoelectric photocatalytic activity in rare earth ions doped BiFeO3

Qingqing Zhu,Xiaojuan Zhang,Li Li,Chao Cheng,Jun Zheng,Youmin Guo,Chunchang Wang

This study focuses on enhancing the piezoelectric photocatalytic activity of BiFeO 3 through rare earth ion doping. By doping rare earth ions (La, Sm, Ce), the crystal structure, optical properties, and piezoelectric properties of BiFeO 3 are modified. The results show that the doping alters the rhombic structure, reduces the band gap, and enhances light absorption. A synergistic system combining ultraviolet − visible spectral irradiation and a high − frequency ultrasonic field was used. By monitoring the decomposition kinetics of Rhodamine B (RhB) and the generation pathways of free radicals, the multi-field coupling catalytic efficiency of piezoelectric semiconductor materials was systematically quantified. The doping significantly improves the degradation rate, with Bi 0.8 Sm 0.2 FeO 3 showing the best performance. The roles of different radicals in the degradation process are investigated, and the catalyst shows good stability and sustainability after multiple cycles.
