Ligand-locked post-synthetic metalation of a Eu(III) metal–organic framework achieving the ratiometric fluorescence sensing for pH and neurotransmitter

Yan-Fang Feng,Bi-Liu Lan,Zi-Ling Li,Tao Deng,Bo Zhou,Yu-Ning Liang,Zhong Zhang

Lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) show promise for ratiometric biosensors owing to their tunable photoluminescence and rich energy transfer processes among Ln 3+ , organic ligand and photosensitizer, yet face challenges in environmental stability and susceptibility of energy transfer to external stimuli. Herein, a ligand-locked post-synthetic metalation (PSMet) strategy, namely grafting Cu(acac) − units to the free bipyridine sites of 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylate (bpydc 2− ) linkers in Eubpydc, was applied to develop a water-stable and dual-emissive Eu-MOF sensor, Cu@Eubpydc. Due to the conformation locking of bipyridine moiety via chelating to Cu(acac) − , the MOF network rigidity is reinforced and water stability is improved. Meanwhile, this modification impedes the energy transfer from the organic linkers to Eu 3+ , boosting ligand-based fluorescent emission, which is more sensitive to external factors than Eu 3+ emission. The post-synthetic Cu@Eubpydc as a ratiometric fluorescence (RF) sensor exhibited a sensitive response to a narrow pH change between 3.1 and 4.0, as well as low detection limits of 80 nM, 107 nM, and 64 nM for common neurotransmitters aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and glutathione, respectively. The pH response mechanism involves the binding of H + to the N-donor of the unmetallized bpydc 2− ligand through hydrogen bonding. In contrast, neurotransmitters sensing relies on hydrogen bonding interaction, absorbance-caused enhancement, as well as acidity enhancement aroused by redox reaction. Additionally, Cu@Eubpydc was finally applied to neurotransmitters determination in serum samples, and its satisfactory recovery rate confirm its practical utility. This work uncovered that the ligand-locked PSMet strategy opens a new avenue for constructing Ln-MOFs with excellent water stability and RF sensing capabilities.

Wet-chemistry-assisted synthesis of BaS:Eu near-infrared phosphors: Core-shell precursor engineering for enhanced Eu²⁺ luminescence and suppressed defect emission

Xingyuan Tao,Xiaoxia Duan,Guang Zheng,Yiwen Liu,Qingxue Zhao,Dawei Wang,Lixin Yi

Core-shell precursor boosts Eu 2+ dispersion and NIR emission in BaS host. • Wet-chemistry-assisted synthesis suppresses S-related defects, enabling NIR emission. • S-related defects act as both luminescent and quenching centers in BaS:Eu. This study develops an innovative wet-chemistry-assisted method for synthesizing BaS:Eu near-infrared (NIR) phosphors. By sequentially precipitating Eu 3+ and Ba 2+ in alkaline solution, a core-shell BaSO 4 @Eu(OH) 3 precursor is obtained, in which the subsequently formed BaSO 4 is inferred to encapsulate the preformed Eu(OH) 3 nuclei. SEM/EDS and XPS analysis show no detectable Eu on the particle surface, supporting this core–shell-like configuration. After sintering in CO reducing atmosphere at 1300 °C, BaS:Eu 2+ is obtained. Under 450 nm excitation, the material exhibits strong NIR broadband emission centered at 715 nm, attributed to the 4 f 6 5d 1 →4 f 7 transition of Eu 2+ in the octahedral crystal field of BaS. Compared with conventional solid-state routes using Eu 2 O 3 or Eu 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , this wet-chemistry-assisted approach appears to improve doping homogeneity in the product system and reduce Eu 2+ aggregation on the particle surface, as reflected in enhanced absorption characteristics and NIR emission intensity. The core-shell precursor configuration is suggested to suppress sulfur-related defect emission by limiting Eu exposure at the particle surface and by controlling the Ba-to-S ratio. Analysis of the luminescence behaviors indicates that sulfur-related defects act as both emission and quenching centers. Overall, this work offers a precursor-engineering strategy that may be extended to develop high-performance NIR-emitting materials. Controllable thermochromic luminescence in SrMoO4: Eu/Tb by nonradiative relaxation and local symmetry for anti-counterfeiting and high-temperature sensing applications

Aihua Zhou,Chengguo Ming,Yumiao Pei,Yuanxue Cai,Tingting Guo,Hanbo Li

Reasonable modulation of temperature-dependent luminescence color has attracted significant attention due to its promising applications in anti-counterfeiting and temperature sensing. Although research on thermochromic materials is growing, the detailed exploration of the causes remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we successfully synthesized SrMoO 4 :Tb/Eu samples exhibiting thermal-responsive color tuning. Under 280 nm excitation, the intensity ratio of Eu 3+ ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 ) to Tb 3+ ( 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 ) in SrMoO 4 :0.08Tb/0.12Eu gradually increases from 0.81 to 5.8 over the temperature range of 303K–573K, accompanied by a distinct color shift from red to yellow. Experimental investigations demonstrated that the thermochromic behavior of the sample is primarily governed by nonradiative relaxation rates and local site symmetry. These results indicated that the samples can have potential for anti-counterfeiting and temperature sensing, particularly suitable as temperature sensing in the high-temperature reactor observation window.

Improving white light emission and quantum yield of Ce@Eu co-doped silicate glass by reducing Eu3+ to Eu2+ with Si3N4

Xiao Ma,Zhifeng Huang,Hailong Yuan,Yujuan Zhou,Meijuan Li,Fei Chen,Qiang Shen

Rare-earth-doped transparent glass shows great potential in white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs) application due to its excellent optical and luminous properties. Currently reported commercial wLEDs have a drawback in red emission missing, which leads to a relatively low color rendering index (CRI) and a relatively high correlated color temperature (CCT). In this work, Ce@Eu Sr–Si–O glass is fabricated using a high-temperature quenching method. The white light is available when the ratio of Ce 3+ /Eu 3+ equals 1, and the emitting color can be adjusted from blue to red by controlling the ratio of Ce 3+ /Eu 3+ . To further optimize the white light, Eu 3+ ions can be reduced to Eu 2+ according to the reaction of 6Eu 3+ + 2N 3− → 6Eu 2+ + N 2 ↑ by introducing Si 3 N 4 . As a result, the standard white light emission can be achieved in the Ce@Eu silicate glass contributed by the blue light from Ce 3+ , red light from Eu 3+ , and yellow–green light from Eu 2+ (two elements, three emission). This glass shows excellent luminous properties, such as a color coordinate is (0.3651, 0.3269) in CIE 1931 color coordinate diagram, a CRI is over 70, a high quantum yield of 36.02%, and a CCT of 4117 K.

Designed Eu(III)-functionalized nanoscale MOF probe based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer for the reversible sensing of trace Malachite green

Kuiyu Yi,Lei Zhang

An ingenious nanoscale fluorescent sensor derived from Eu 3+ -postfunctionalized MIL-53 (Al) (Eu 3+ @MIL-53 [Al]) was fabricated though a simple and effective approach. Malachite green (MG) effectively turned off the luminescence of Eu 3+ @MIL-53 (Al) via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), thus enabling MG sensing. The developed probe exhibited instantaneous reusability after being cleaned with deionized water. The fluorescence intensity, quenching efficiency, and crystal structure of the recoverable sensor after five recycling processes were unchanged compared with those of the original sample. Moreover, the potential mechanism of MG detection was revealed in detail. This work represents the first attempt to determine MG in aquaculture water and products by using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The Eu 3+ @MIL-53 (Al) probe proved to be a remarkable fluorescence probe for MG with high selectivity, sensitivity, and excellent regeneration capability. It provides a promising functional platform for the recognition of illegal MG addition to aquaculture water and products.

Atomically dispersed Eu(III) sites in natural deep eutectic solvents based fluorescent probe efficient identification of Fe3+ and Cu2+ in wastewater

Hongwei Ren,Xue Wang,Ruiquan Gong,Meiyu Li,Hongyu Zhu,Jinfeng Zhang,Erhong Duan

Heavy metal ions in wastewater have brought serious environmental pollution. To improve the detection efficiency, it is important to find useful fluorescent probes . The emerging green natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) offer attractive option for “green” detection for its good biocompatibility, easy preparation, and high sensitivity. In this study, a multi-functionalized fluorescent probe with atomically dispersed EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O in amino acid-based NADESs ( l -Glutamic acid/Glycerol, l -Glu/Gly) was synthesized by metal-ligand coordination interactions with a mass ratio of 15:1. Combined with the NADESs and rare earth metal , the l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O could form the amino site and Eu 2+ site fluorescent centers. Under the excitation wavelength of 370 nm, it had dual emission peaks at 425 nm and 470 nm with efficient resonance energy transfer . The stable optoelectronic properties of l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O under external factors, such as mass ratio (13,1 to 18:1), temperature (30–50 °C), pH (1 to 14) and storage time ( >42 days), approved l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O an excellent fluorescence probe. In the application of water-quality monitoring, Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ could react with l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O in different reactive patterns. The blue fluorescence was quenched by Fe 3+ and enhanced by Cu 2+ , thus metal ions could be distinguished with high sensitivity. The detective process was determined and the fluorescent mechanism was also proposed. l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O fluorescent probe was demonstrated to be an efficient fluorescent probe for metal detection avoiding the hydrothermal process, and the cumbersome of ilter, dialysis, freeze drying.

Magnetic metal-organic frameworks (Fe3O4@ZIF-8) composites for U(VI) and Eu(III) elimination: simultaneously achieve favorable stability and functionality

Yihan Wu,Biyun Li,Xiangxue Wang,Shujun Yu,Hongwei Pang,Yue Liu,Xiaoyan Liu,Xiangke Wang

The water stable core-shell microspheres (Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8) with strong magnetism were successfully fabricated through a facile modification strategy. Concrete procedures included firstly pretreatment of Fe 3 O 4 core with anionic polyelectrolyte to acquire negatively charged Fe 3 O 4 particle surface, followed by nucleation through attracting Zn 2+ cation, and then growth of a thin layer of ZIF-8 (~25 nm). Various characterization techniques (SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, VSM, BET and XPS) indicated that the Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 microspheres were highly stable and magnetic with a large specific surface area (606.91 m 2 /g) and fairly sufficient functional groups ( NH , OH, COOH, Zn O, N O and C N ). Multi-factors affecting the radionuclides removal performance on Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 was adequately explored, comprising contact time, temperature, pH, ionic strength, co-existing ions and extreme conditions. And the results showed that Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 exhibited fast reaction kinetics (~30 min to achieve equilibrium), excellent uptake capabilities (539.7 mg U/g and 255.6 mg Eu/g), remarkable selectivity and favorable physicochemical stability. These researches suggested that Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 could not only simultaneously achieve favorable stability and functionality, but also easily to be separated by external magnetic field after used in radioactive sewage treatment, which was of considerable practical utility in extracting radioactive wastes though in harsh circumstance.

Eu-doped ZIF-8 as a ratiometric fluorescence-scattering probe for the anthrax biomarker in food samples based on competitive coordination

Shiyu Li,Bo Fu,Huihui Li,Yatian Cao,Shengming Chen,Dong-Yu Guo,Le Li,Qinhe Pan

Bacillus anthracis spores can cause contagious anthrax, so it is significant for the public safety to detect its biomarker dipicolinic acid (DPA). Ratiometric fluorescent probes for DPA have attracted great interest because of the self-calibration effect, but they suffer from the complicated construction of dual-emitting materials. With combining fluorescence and second-order scattering (SOS), Eu-doped Zn-based metal–organic framework (ZIF-8) was here designed as a ratiometric probe for DPA, avoiding the completed construction of dual-emitting materials. Eu-doped ZIF-8 exhibited no fluorescence but possessed strong SOS ascribed to the nanostructure. However, the competitive coordination of DPA not only triggered the antenna effect of Eu 3+ but also caused the decomposition of Eu-doped ZIF-8. As a consequence, the fluorescence enhancement and the SOS weakness were observed upon the addition of DPA to Eu-doped ZIF-8. And thus, a ratiometric probe for DPA was constructed based on Eu-doped ZIF-8 by integrating fluorescence with SOS. The probe as-constructed could quantify DPA in a wide range of 0.1–150 μM with a rapid response (1 min) and a low detection limit (31 nM). It also displayed excellent manifestation for the analysis of food samples with reasonable accuracy (recoveries, 90.0%-101.5%) and satisfactory precision (RSDs, 0.6%-5.7%), offering a reliable tool for the supervision of the public safety.

Self-Luminous Wood Coatings with Carbon Dots/TiO2 Grafted Afterglow SrAl2O4: Eu, Dy Core-Shell Phosphors for Long-Lasting Formaldehyde Removal

Longfei Zhang,Ying Wang,Limin Peng,Zhilin Chen,Shaoyi Lyu,Siqun Wang

Long-term relief of indoor volatile pollution has become a competitive issue worldwide in both visible and dark environments. A novel self-luminous wood coating with carbon dots (CDs)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterial coated SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+(CDs/TiO2@SAO) composite was prepared for the long-term degradation of formaldehyde through a simple sol-gel method. The microstructure, chemical composition, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra, and long-lasting fluorescence of the CDs/TiO2@SAO photocatalyst were analyzed to illustrate the mechanism for degrading formaldehyde. The obtained CDs with a particle size of ~2–7 nm have a good graphite structure and presented good absorption in visible light. In addition, owing to the synergistic effect of the CDs/TiO2nanomaterial coating layer and the long-afterglow luminescence of the SAO phosphor, the CDs/TiO2@SAO composite can absorb a part of the visible light for photocatalytic degradation and store luminous energy efficiently at daytime so as to give out visible luminescence continuously for a few hours in the darkness. Furthermore, the functional wood coatings with CDs/TiO2@SAO composite presented continuous and efficient photocatalytic activity in the presence and absence of light exposure. The current research could provide a new strategy for designing an efficient photocatalyst for degrading formaldehyde pollution in the daytime with a visible light supply and in an indoor dark environment without an external light source. Keywords:carbon dots;core-shell microspheres;SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+phosphor;titanium dioxide;surface modification;photocatalytic degradation

A novel Zn/Eu-MOF for the highly sensitive, reversible and visualized sensing of ofloxacin residues in pork, beef and fish

Yan Wu,Yue Zhou,Hongchen Long,Xiangyu Chen,Yuanyuan Jiang,Lei Zhang,Tao Le

The study investigates a bimetallic organic framework (Zn/Eu-MOF) based fluorescent probe for visual detection of ofloxacin (OFL) in pork, beef and fish. The developed sensing probe recognizes OFL through internal filtration and cation-π interaction between OFL and Zn/Eu-MOF, resulting in a distinct color change from orange-red to light green. The content of OFL can be determined through RGB analysis by a mobile-phone. The developed sensing probe offers several advantages such as broad linear range (0.1 ∼ 80 μM), rapid response time (30 s), low detection line (0.44 μM). The effectiveness of the sensing probe can last for five rounds with good recovery. Moreover, the application of the sensing probe on pork, beef and fish samples are reliable, with recoveries ranging from 93.4 to 112.1%, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) within 1.17% to 2.06%. These results suggest that the developed sensing probe could have significant potential for practical on-site test in food.

Carbon Cloth Supported Nano-Mg(OH)2 for the Enrichment and Recovery of Rare Earth Element Eu(III) From Aqueous Solution

Li Yinong,Tian Chen,Liu Weizhen,Xu Si,Xu Yunyun,Cui Rongxin,Lin Zhang

Nano-Mg(OH)2 is attracting great attention as adsorbent for pre-concentration and recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from low-concentration solution, due to its superior removal efficiency for REEs and environmental friendliness. However, the nanoparticles also cause some severe problems during application, including aggregation, blockage in fixed-bed column, as well as the difficulties in separation and reuse. Herein, in order to avoid the mentioned problems, a carbon cloth (CC) supported nano-Mg(OH)2 (nano-Mg(OH)2@CC) was synthesized by electrodeposition. The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that the interlaced nano-sheet of Mg(OH)2 grew firmly and uniformly on the surface of carbon cloth fibers. Batch adsorption experiments of Eu(III) indicated that the nano-Mg(OH)2@CC composite maintained the excellent adsorption performance of nano-Mg(OH)2 toward Eu(III). After adsorption, the Eu containing composite was calcined under nitrogen atmosphere. The content of Eu2O3 in the calcined material was as high as 99.66%. Fixed-bed column experiments indicated that no blockage for Mg(OH)2@CC composite was observed during the treatment, while the complete blockage of occurred to nano-Mg(OH)2 at an effluent volume of 240 mL. Moreover, the removal efficiency of Mg(OH)2@CC was still higher than 90% until 4,200 mL of effluent volume. This work provides a promising method for feasible application of nanoadsorbents in fixed-bed process to recycle low-concentration REEs from wastewater.

A novel smartphone-mediated ratiometric fluorescence imprinting sensor based on boric acid-functionalized Eu-MOF for the detection of horseradish peroxidase

Ma Minghao,Hu Wei,Luo Shengdong,Pei Fubin,Lei Wu,Wang Jiang,Tong Zhaoyang,Liu Bing,Du Bin,Hao Qingli,Mu Xihui

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used as a model glycoprotein, and a molecularly imprinted ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on a smartphone (NEB@MIP) was constructed using the sol–gel method for the fluorescence and visual detection of HRP. The sensor consisted of boronic acid-functionalized metal–organic frameworks (Eu-MOF-B(OH) 2 ) and nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs). The Eu-MOF-B(OH) 2 surface can not only load abundant N-CDs but also covalently bind with HRP through its boronic acid groups. The NEB@MIP exhibited two fluorescence emission peaks at 450 nm and 616 nm. When HRP was present, the fluorescence was quenched due to the internal filtering effect (IFE), but the quenching of N-CDs was more pronounced. Furthermore, the concentration of HRP in the range 0.05–10 µM showed a good linear relationship with the ratio of fluorescence intensity at 616 nm and 450 nm, with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.01 µM. Meanwhile, the sensor displayed a noticeable change in fluorescence color under different concentrations of HRP targets. Moreover, the sensor achieved satisfactory results in detecting simulated real samples, with recoveries ranging from 92.0% to 98.5% and RSDs between 1.5% and 3.3%. The detection platform based on the smartphone also performed well when detecting HRP in simulated real samples. Thus, this work provided a new approach for the portable detection of HRP. The method provides a new idea for the combination of ratiometric fluorescence molecular imprinting of glycoproteins and the portable detection platform of smart phones. Graphical
