A new type of magnetic halloysite nanotubes molecularly imprinted polymer (MHNTs@MIP) based on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with embedded magnetic nanoparticles was introduced in this study. MHNTs@MIP was prepared through surface imprinting technology, using 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as a template, 4-vinylpyridine as the monomer, divinylbenzene as cross-linking agents, and 2,2-azodiisobutyronitrile as initiator. MHNTs@MIP was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometer. MHNTs@MIP exhibited rapid and reliable analysis with supermagnetic properties, as well as repeated use and template-specific recognition. The adsorption capacity of magnetic halloysite nanotubes non-imprinted polymer (MHNTs@NIP) and MHNTs@MIP was 10.3 mg/g and 35.2 mg/g, respectively. In the detailed discussion on specific selectivity, MHNTs@MIP can be applied as an adsorbent for sample pretreatment extraction and obtain high recoveries of about 85–94%. After extraction, high-performance liquid chromatography was used to detect 2,4-D residue in water.

This study pioneers the grafting of oleylamine onto halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) to synthesize a low-temperature composite modifying agent for rubber (HNTs-Y). It enables the synergistic regulation of the low-temperature performance of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) via a “plasticization-reinforcement” mechanism, addressing both the migration propensity of conventional small-molecule plasticizers and the insufficient low-temperature modification efficacy of pristine HNTs. This work thereby provides a novel multifunctional modification strategy for optimizing the low-temperature performance of elastomers. Experimental results demonstrate that HNTs-Y significantly enhances the low-temperature resistance of NBR. Specifically, at a loading of 6 phr, the hardness difference of 4 # NBR between −40°C and 40°C is reduced by 45.2% compared to 1 # NBR, indicating improved hardness stability over a broad temperature range. Additionally, the tensile strength of 4 # NBR at −20°C is 79% higher than that at 20°C and 77% higher than that of 1 # NBR, reflecting enhanced resistance to tensile fracture under low-temperature conditions. Furthermore, with the increase in HNTs-Y content, the brittle temperature ( T b ) and glass transition temperature ( T g ) of NBR exhibit an overall downward trend. For 4 # NBR, the T b reaches −52°C and the T g is −29.5°C, manifesting excellent low-temperature resistance.

Long-term metal protection can be aided by the intelligent release of corrosion inhibitors, which can improve organic coatings’ anticorrosion capabilities. In this study, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were vacuum-loaded with tannic acid (TA) and surface-modified via in situ polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy), yielding pH-responsive nanofillers (TA-PPy@HNTs). These nanofillers enabled controlled TA release, forming protective Fe–TA complexes at corrosion sites, while the outer PPy layer imparted photothermal responsiveness, facilitating disulfide bond exchange reactions and enhancing intrinsic self-healing capabilities. Furthermore, the incorporation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) segments improved hydrophobicity and delayed corrosive ion ingress. The optimized PTH-3 coating exhibited excellent corrosion resistance, maintaining an impedance modulus above 108 Ω·cm2 after 90 days in 3.5% NaCl solution. It also demonstrated superior mechanical properties (elongation at break of 447.73% and tensile strength of 30.71 MPa), outstanding cavitation resistance, and efficient sunlight-driven self-healing, restoring over 90% of its mechanical performance after damage. This work provides a promising strategy for designing multifunctional, durable protective coatings for metallic substrates.

Macroporous polymer foams (MPFs) were prepared through oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) stabilized by the natural clay halloysite nanotube (HNT) nanoparticles with the addition of small amounts of the nonionic surfactant Tween 85. The resulting MPFs
were characterized, and the results showed an open cell structure with interconnected pores and a hydrophilic surface with a suspended state in aqueous solution. These features were beneficial for the adsorption of pyrethroids. Moreover, the adsorption of λ-cyhalothrin on MPFs
was examined to determine the kinetic and equilibrium data of the adsorption process. The findings of the kinetic and equilibrium studies revealed that a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm were the best fitted models (R
2>0.99), implying that the
process of adsorption is a monolayer and chemically reactive. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacity and equilibrium time for λ-cyhalothrin on MPFs were estimated to be 23.98 μmol·g-1 and 240 min at 298 K. Increasing the temperature led to an increase
in adsorption capacity. Increasing the initial concentration of λ-cyhalothrin led to an increase in clear adsorption capacity. Finally, the suspended MPFs represent a promising and reliable adsorbent for the removal of hydrophobic organic pollutants from aqueous solutions.

The oily wastewater is one of the major waste streams generated due to industrialization. The membrane technology has prominent advantages in the field of oily wastewater treatment . In present investigation, halloysite nanotubes (Hal) and polydopamine (PDA) were utilized to synergistically modify MXene followed by the fabrication of a series of Hal@MXene-PDA two-dimensional (2D) composite membranes by vacuum filtration. Observing the morphology of the membrane and exploring the change in interlayer space by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), it was confirmed that, the composite membrane was successfully modified. The results revealed that, the Hal@MXene-PDA composite membrane exhibits higher hydrophilicity compared to the virgin membrane. The pure water flux using the composite membrane was found to be 5036.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , and the rejections of petroleum ether and lubricating oil were evaluated as 99.8%. The modified membrane(M6) also shows good anti-fouling ability in the anti-fouling cycle test and hence can be considered as a potential candidate for oil-water separation.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are considered to be an important move to revive high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries due to their good flexibility and high safety. However, the low room-temperature ionic conductivity of SPEs has always been a stumbling block for their practical applications. Herein, a composite SPE has been fabricated by the cooperation of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and a type of natural nanoclay-halloysite nanotube (HNT) in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. It is expected that the sticky PEO can improve the interfacial stability of the SPE and lithium foil, while the special structure and surface charge properties of the HNTs changed the coordination environment of lithium ions and facilitated Li+ running on highways along the HNT outer surface. The optimized SPE composite showed an outstanding room-temperature ionic conductivity of 2.45 × 10–4 S cm–1 and high ion transference number of 0.67 at 25 °C. A LiFePO4/SPE-H5/Li full battery retained a discharge capacity of 142 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at a rate of 0.2 C (25 °C). In addition, SPE-H5 can also be used in a 4.3 V high voltage NCM/SPE-H5/Li battery due to its excellent electrochemical stability window (more than 5 V). This work also reveals that lower-cost natural clay minerals are excellent nanoceramic fillers in realizing sustainable high-energy-density energy storage.

To develop fully biodegradable and reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) melt-blown nonwovens (MBs) for separation and filtration, PLA/aminated halloysite nanotubes (PLA/A-HNTs) MBs were prepared using PLA/A-HNTs master-batches, compatibilized by dual-monomer glycidyl methacrylate-styrene (St-co-GMA) melt-grafted PLA (PLA-g-(St-co-GMA)). The morphology, crystallization, pore size distribution, filtration performance, and mechanical properties of PLA/PLA-g-(St-co-GMA)/A-HNTs MBs were characterized. The results indicated that PLA/PLA-g-(St-co-GMA)/A-HNT MBs could be successfully manufactured, with well dispersed A-HNTs in PLA MB fibers due to improved compatibility by PLA-g-(St-co-GMA). Incorporation of A-HNTs and PLA-g-(St-co-GMA) slightly increased the average diameter and pore size of PLA MBs. A-HNTs increased the crystallinity degree of PLA MBs, while the crystal forms remained unchanged. In comparison with PLA MBs, the tensile strengths of PLA/PLA-g-(St-co-GMA)/A-HNTs MBs were enhanced but the elongation decreased. PLA/PLA-g-(St-co-GMA)/A-HNT MBs could obtain higher filtration efficiency than neat PLA MBs.

Provides a novel strategy utilizing mineral to synthesize high-performance sulfur host. • HNT@NC-MS 2 (M = Co, Ni, Fe) exhibit superior anchor and catalytic abilities for LiPSs. • HNT@NC-CoS 2 /S battery exhibit outstanding rate performance and cycle stability. • HNT@NC-CoS 2 shows broad application prospects in practical high-performance LSBs. Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are impeded by the shuttle effect arising from soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish kinetics of sulfur redox reactions. To tackle these issues, we designed a ternary sulfur host comprising hollow tubular halloysite (HNT) coated with N‑doped carbon layer and decorated with transition metal sulfide (CoS 2 , NiS 2 , or FeS 2 ) nanoparticles via high‑temperature carbonization and in situ solvothermal synthesis. The hollow nanotubular structure of HNT provides space for sulfur loading and volume accommodation, the carbon shell ensures electrical conductivity, and the MS 2 nanoparticles offer polar sites for LiPSs chemisorption and catalytic conversion. Among the three sulfides, CoS 2 exhibits the strongest catalytic activity, particularly in accelerating the liquid‑phase conversion of long‑chain Li 2 S 8 to short‑chain Li 2 S 4 . Benefiting from this synergy, the HNT@NC-CoS 2 /S cathode delivers an initial capacity of 1018.4 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C with 81.5% retention over 200 cycles. At a high sulfur loading (3.5 mg cm −2 ) and a lean electrolyte-to-sulfur ratio (E/S ≈ 10 µL mg −1 ), the cell demonstrates high areal capacity of 3.1 mAh cm −2 after 50 cycles while delivering enough energy to illuminate an LED for approximately 30 min. This work provides a rational pathway for constructing adsorption‑catalytic integrated sulfur hosts and promotes the value‑added utilization of clay minerals in energy storage. Halloysite/biochar was prepared by co-pyrolysis at different temperatures using coconut shell and halloysite as raw materials. Magnetic adsorbents were prepared through ball-mill extrusion with Fe 3 O 4 and the halloysite/biochar and the capacity of the adsorbents to adsorb Pb(II) from water was evaluated and compared. The effects of pH, contact time, and initial Pb(II) concentration on the adsorption capacity of the magnetic adsorbents for Pb(II) were investigated. The pseudo-second-order ( R 2 =0.9999) and Langmuir isothermal models ( R 2 =0.9906) fit the experimental data well. The prepared samples denotes as MBM-HBC700 exhibited the highest Pb(II) adsorption capacity (833.33 ± 16.71 mg·g -1 ), and the removal efficiency of Pb(II) by the magnetic adsorbents was above 90% after four adsorption–desorption cycles. Complexation, cation exchange, cation–π interaction, precipitation, pore filling and electrostatic adsorption have been proposed as the main removal mechanisms. After applying MBM-HBCs to simulated electroplating wastewater, the contents of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cr(VI) were significantly lower than the discharge standard of China. The magnetic adsorbents prepared in this study have wide application prospects in the treatment of Pb(II) in wastewater, thus providing a new approach for promoting waste recycling and utilization.

Solid Polymer Electrolytes (SPEs) exhibit great potential for application in high energy density solid-state lithium metal batteries owing to their excellent flexibility and high safety. However, the growth of lithium dendrites and poor interfacial contact between the electrolyte and electrode seriously hinder the wide commercial application. In this work, a composite solid electrolyte from halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), comb-like poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL), and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) is fabricated via solvent-free in situ photoinitiated radical polymerization. On account of HNTs, the composite solid electrolyte (CSE) exhibits significantly improved room temperature ionic conductivity (6.62 × 10−5 S cm−1), a greater lithium transference number (0.55), and a higher electrochemical stability window (5.4 V) compared with the analog without HNTs (PSE). This is because the negatively charged outer silica surfaces of HNTs are enriched with Li+, while the positively charged aluminol inner surfaces accommodate FSI− anions, as clearly observed by TEM. As a bonus, the growth of lithium dendrites is remarkably alleviated. The superior electrochemical properties, in conjunction with refined interfacial contact by the in situ fabrication technique, enable the CSE-based lithium metal battery (at 1C and 60 °C for the LiFePO4 cathode) to have excellent cycling performance of high initial discharge capacity (155 mA h g−1), outstanding average coulombic efficiency (>99%), and extraordinary capacity retention (>92% over 600 cycles). Coupled with the high voltage LiMn0.5Fe0.5PO4 cathode (4.25 V), the solid-state lithium metal cell with the CSE also exhibits superior cycling performance, with an initial capacity of 134 mA h g−1 and a capacity retention of 87% over 250 cycles at 0.2C and 60 °C.

Forced surface segregation of hydrophilic nanoparticles on the hydrophobic polymer matrix is considered as the effective strategy to fabricate high performance hybrid membrane for oil/water separation. In this work, the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were successively modified with dopamine (PDA) and tannic acid (TA) coatings to obtain the hydrophilic nanoparticles (NPs) of HNTs-DA-TA. Next, the obtained HNTs-DA-TA NPs were blended with polyethersulfone (PES) to prepare the oil/water separation membrane via the phase inversion in the coagulation bath containing Fe 3+ . We have found that the interfacial coordination between TA and Fe 3+ is able to enhance the surface segregation of hydrophilic HNTs-DA-TA NPs on hydrophobic PES membrane, which not only contributes to the formation of asymmetric porous membrane, but also can prevent the loss of nanotubes during the phase transitions. Thanks to these advantages, the water flux of nanocomposite membranes was significantly increased (up to 682 L m -2 h -1 ), which was ~3.4 times than that of the pristine PES membrane (199 L m -2 h -1 ), whereas the rejection was still kept at a high state. After three cycles of separation, the water flux recovery rate can reach up to 91%, which was also much higher than 56% of the pristine PES.

The natural halloysite nanotubes were used as the nanocontainer to load Na 2 MoO 4 corrosion inhibitor , and the release rate of Na 2 MoO 4 was further controlled by wrapped with the CaMoO 4 end stopper through adding with Ca 2+ . The variable release rates were fulfilled by the formation of CaMoO 4 end stopper with different strength, and the release time can be adjusted from one to dozens of hours. Moreover, the prepared complex corrosion inhibitor is also an acid-responsive smart material, which can quickly release the large amount of corrosion inhibitors under acidic conditions through the decomposition of insoluble CaMoO 4 complex on the surface or end of halloysite. In addition, the epoxy coating mixed with 10 wt% Ca 2+ treated Na 2 MoO 4 loaded halloysite can provide the highest corrosion resistance and sustained release of the corrosion inhibitor to achieve corrosion healing in the coating defects.
