The electroreduction of CO 2 to CO is fundamentally hindered by sluggish COOH intermediate formation and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we show that this challenge can be addressed through the dynamic in-situ reconstruction of a CuO/In 2 O 3 precursor under electrochemical CO 2 reduction conditions. By employing in-situ electrochemical spectroscopy techniques in combination with theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that the presence of In 2 O 3 facilitates the complete reduction of CuO to metallic Cu. This in-situ reconstruction produces electron-rich Cu-In 2 O 3 interfaces, characterized by a reduced work function and an upshifted Cu 3 d -band center, which promote CO 2 activation and the formation of COOH/CO intermediates. Those interfacial properties lead to a pronounced electronic coupling that endows the electrocatalyst with high CO 2 -to-CO selectivity at low potentials. Specifically, the optimised Cu/In 2 O 3 achieves CO Faradaic efficiency above 90% across −0.5 to −0.9 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, reaching 97.6% at −0.6 V in a H-type cell, and sustains a high CO selectivity of 96.0% even at an ultralow potential of −0.2 V in a flow-cell configuration. These findings underscore the crucial role of electron-rich interfaces in directing CO 2 reduction with exceptional selectivity and activity toward CO formation.

Highly sensitive detection of trimethylamine (TMA) concentration in complex monitoring environments is a pivotal technology for food freshness assessment. Herein, through an active-site engineering strategy, PdRu-modified hierarchical In 2 O 3 nanoflowers were successfully prepared by self-assembly of mesoporous nanosheets. The 3D interconnected pore system significantly promotes the diffusion and mass transfer of TMA, while notably enhancing the interfacial collision efficiency in gas-sensitive reactions. The PdRu/In 2 O 3 -1.0-based sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 71.9 at 50 ppm, with a detection limit of 200 ppb, while optimizing the operating temperature range from 200°C to 140°C. Simultaneously, machine learning-based analysis confirms the high selectivity, enabling it to identify TMA in ammonia-containing binary mixtures with an accuracy quantified at 99.3%. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations combined with in situ/ex situ characterizations revealed that bimetallic oxygen spillover effects optimize oxygen transfer kinetics, reduce the activation energy barrier, and collectively enhance the trimethylamine adsorption energy (ΔE ads = -0.51 eV) through orbital hybridization and charge redistribution mechanisms. Leveraging the advanced sensing strategy, the wireless portable sensing system is engineered for the rapid and non-destructive evaluation of seafood freshness, enabling quality detection and cloud data transmission throughout the entire industry chain.

In this work, In 2 O 3 nanosheets were fabricated on the surface of Al 2 O 3 ceramic tubes via an in-situ synthesis approach. The effects of three annealing atmospheres (O 2 , air, and N 2 ) on their micro-morphologies and gas-sensing properties were systematically investigated. The gas-sensing test results demonstrate that the In 2 O 3 nanosheet sensor annealed in N 2 atmosphere exhibits the optimal sensing performance towards 50 ppm NO 2 . At an operating temperature of 160 °C, its response value reaches 241.8, which is 4 times that of the sample annealed in oxygen and 1.5 times that of the sample annealed in air, respectively. Meanwhile, this sensor also exhibits a rapid response time of 15 s, along with excellent selectivity and repeatability. Combined characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that nitrogen atmosphere annealing enables In 2 O 3 nanosheets to generate abundant oxygen vacancies (with a content of 44.67%), while simultaneously facilitating the formation of homojunctions and N-doping. These defect structures can significantly enhance the adsorption energy between NO 2 and In 2 O 3 as well as the charge transfer efficiency, thereby achieving the optimization of gas-sensing performance.

Pt SA/ In 2 O 3 -3% sensor exhibited a remarkable response of 1.96 to isoprene with a concentration as low as 50 ppb at 70°C. • Response kinetic models and DFT calculations were employed to clearly elucidate the response kinetic mechanism of Pt SA/ In 2 O 3 sensor towards isoprene at low temperature. • The superior gas sensing performance of Pt SA/ In 2 O 3 sensor is primarily attributed to the synergistic effect of Pt SA functioning as both active reaction sites and binding sites, unique spillover effect and large specific surface area. Various catalysts have been applied to improve the sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors, but achieving high response and outstanding selectivity at low working temperature remains an extremely tough challenge for traditional chemiresistive gas sensors (CGSs). Herein, an in-situ annealing approach has been developed to synthesize composite material with Pt single atoms (Pt SAs) anchored on In 2 O 3 substrate for highly sensitive and selective detecting isoprene at low concentrations (50 ppb) under low temperature of 70 °C. Besides, pure In 2 O 3 and Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) were utilized as comparisons to further investigate enhanced sensing mechanism with the support of Pt SAs. Experimental and response kinetic model results suggested that Pt SAs can not only serve as active sites to promote the oxidation of isoprene, but also act independently as binding sites to facilitate the adsorption of isoprene on In 2 O 3 surface. Simultaneously, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that Pt SA provides a selective adsorption site for isoprene over other gases, thereby facilitating targeted adsorption of isoprene on In 2 O 3 nanoclusters. This study proves the successful anchoring of Pt SAs on In 2 O 3 nanoclusters by utilizing atomic-level interface modulation engineering strategy, providing an attractive strategy for developing CGSs with high response and selectivity at low working temperatures.

Element doping has attracted extensive attention as a strategy to regulate the electronic structure of catalysts. In this study, Ni-doped Bi2MoO6 nanosheets were uniformly anchored onto rod-like In2O3 to furnish substantial accessible reactive sites and close interfacial contact. Ni doping enabled a precise modulation for the band configuration of Bi2MoO6, imparting a Z-scheme heterojunction between Ni-doped Bi2MoO6 and In2O3. The Ni-doped Bi2MoO6/In2O3 Z-scheme heterojunction exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance in the treatment of Cr(VI) and emerging organic contaminants. In the Cr(VI)/bisphenol A coexistence system, Ni-doped Bi2MoO6/In2O3 not only achieved high reduction efficiency for Cr(VI), but also enhanced the degradation rate of bisphenol A by a factor of 4.7 compared to the single-pollutant system. The removal efficiencies could surpass many related reported studies. The product toxicity after bisphenol A degradation in a mixed Cr(VI)/bisphenol A system was analyzed by the total organic carbon content, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the toxicity estimation software tool, and microbial activity, manifesting that their impact on the environment has been greatly reduced. Furthermore, the catalyst maintains stable and consistent performance in multiple binary systems, including Cr(VI)/tetracycline and Cr(VI)/ciprofloxacin. This work provides insights for the design of element-doped heterojunction catalysts, which demonstrate high performance, durability, and environmental compatibility in the treatment of complex wastewater.

Two-dimensional (2D) graphene-like metal oxides are promising for gas sensing due to their high surface area to volume ratio. This study presents an optimized van der Waals stripping method for fabricating ultrathin In 2 O 3 and SnO 2 films and the In 2 O 3 / SnO 2 heterostructure. The heterojunction sensor demonstrated high performance ethanol detection at 100 ppm, with a response value (R a /R g ) of 13.93, rapid response/recovery times (7 s/29 s), and excellent selectivity. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations revealed that the enhanced performance originates from synergistic interfacial effects that promote electron transfer and selective ethanol adsorption. This work provides a scalable strategy for synthesizing 2D heterostructures and demonstrates their potential for developing advanced gas sensors.

Acetylene is of great significance for early warning gas of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, we designed a structure of nanoparticle decorated In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 nanofibers and prepared them by electrospinning. Then we regulated the sensing properties by doping Ag, and acquired an optimal sensor for detecting C 2 H 2 gas. Morphology and structure have been characterized. The gas sensor exhibited good response for acetylene. In a low temperature of 160 °C, the response (R a /R g ) exceeded 9.7 in C 2 H 2 gas with a concentration of 100 ppm. Rapid response in 45 s, and outstanding long-term stability have also been proved. The key point was that the sensor can all achieve a response over 2 within the temperature range of 20 °C to 220 °C. This temperature range coincides with the internal temperature variation range of LIB cells including the normal condition and early stage of thermal runaway. Meanwhile, the reproducibility of electrospinning method has already been verified. Furthermore, we fabricated the LIBs implantable sensor and tested its built-in stability, then we found that the sensor had a highly differentiated response signal to distinguish C 2 H 2 gas and temperature. Finally, according to the nanostructure of sensing materials, acetylene sensing mechanism has been proposed.

With the recently-booming hydrogen (H 2 ) economy by green H 2 as the energy carriers and the newly-emerged exhaled diagnosis by human organ-metabolized H 2 as a biomarker, H 2 sensing is simultaneously required with fast response, low detection limit, and tolerant stability against humidity, switching, and poisoning. Here, reliable H 2 sensing has been developed by utilizing indium oxide nanocubes decorated with palladium and gold nanodots (Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs), which have been synthesized by combined hydrothermal reaction, annealing, and chemical bath deposition. As-prepared Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs are observed with surface-enriched NDs and nanopores. Beneficially, Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs show 300 ppb-low detection limit, 5 s-fast response to 500 ppm H 2 , 75%RH-high humidity tolerance, and 56 days-long stability at 280 °C. Further, Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs show excellent stability against switching sensing response, and are tolerant to H 2 S poisoning even being exposed to 10 ppm H 2 S at 280 °C. Such excellent H 2 sensing may be attributed to the synergistic effect of the boosted Pd–Au NDs’ spillover effect and interfacial electron transfer, increased adsorption sites over the porous NCBs’ surface, and utilized Pd NDs’ affinity with H 2 and H 2 S. Practically, Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs are integrated into the H 2 sensing device, which can reliably communicate with a smartphone.

Metal oxide quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) nanostructures have a very good gas-sensing performance due to their large surface area and porous structures with a less agglomerated configuration. However, the well-designed fragile nanostructures could be easily destroyed during the conventional fabrication process of gas sensors. Herein, we presented a novel materials-sensor integration fabrication strategy: on basis of screen printing (SP) technology and calcination , micro-injecting (MI) was introduced into the fabrication process of sensors, which was named as SPMIC, to obtain In 2 O 3 nanowire-like network directly on the surface of coplanar sensors array by structure replication from sacrificial carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The obtained In 2 O 3 nanowire-like network exhibited an excellent response (electrical resistance ratio R a / R g ), about 63.5, for100 ppm formaldehyde at 300 °C, which was about 30 times larger than that of compact In 2 O 3 nanoparticles film (non-network film). The enhanced gas-sensing properties were mainly attributed to the high surface-to-volume ratio and the nanoscopic structural properties of materials. Furthermore, the SPMIC could be employed not only in the preparation of other metal oxide nanowire-like network, but also in the fabrication of coplanar gas sensors arrays on the required sites with different materials.

Reliable detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as acetone, is essential for environmental monitoring and non-invasive disease diagnosis. However, conventional In 2 O 3 -based gas sensors suffer from high operating temperatures, humidity interference, and limited selectivity. Herein, we report one-dimensional (1D) hollow In 2 O 3 @Fe 2 O 3 core-shell heterojunction tubes fabricated via a tannic acid (TA)-assisted transformation of MIL-68(In). TA plays dual roles in etching the MIL-68(In) template and coordinating with Fe 3 + ions to form a mesoporous tubular structure with an enhanced specific surface area of 89.57 m 2 g −1 for In 2 O 3 @Fe 2 O 3 -0.75. Benefiting from the synergistic n-n heterojunction effect and abundant active sites, the optimized In 2 O 3 @Fe 2 O 3 -0.75 sensor exhibits a markedly improved response of 263.6 towards 100 ppm acetone at 200 °C, approximately 3.6 times that of pristine In 2 O 3 , and enables detection down to 100 ppb with a response of 1.87. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates rapid response/recovery (8/9 s), excellent long-term stability over 30 days, and remarkable humidity tolerance across 29–82% RH at 25 °C. This work provides an effective MOF-derived strategy for constructing hollow metal-oxide core-shell heterojunctions toward high-performance and humidity-tolerant gas sensing applications.

For metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors, surface reactions are central to their sensing performance. Herein, we propose a strategy for constructing high-performance composite sensing materials by introducing HEOs hollow spheres. Employing In 2 O 3 nanofibers as the sensing substrate leverages their favorable charge carrier transport characteristics, while the innovative incorporation of HEOs hollow spheres with unique physicochemical properties effectively enhances H 2 S detection. Through electrospinning technology, we successfully fabricated HEOs/In 2 O 3 composite nanofibers with different HEOs loading amounts. The optimal sample exhibited an ultrahigh response of 3200 toward 1 ppm H 2 S at 120°C, accompanied by a substantially shortened response time of 31 s and a low detection limit of 5 ppb. Notably, the operating temperature was reduced from 180°C to 120°C, while excellent selectivity and long-term stability were maintained. Characterization results demonstrate that the decoration of HEOs hollow spheres not only modulates the microscopic morphology but also enriches the surface oxygen vacancy concentration, which serves as the critical factor for the enhanced H 2 S sensing performance of the composite sensor, providing a novel platform and theoretical foundation for the rational design of next-generation high-performance H 2 S sensors.

Porous tremella-like In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 microspheres possess abundant oxygen vacancies. • In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterojunction narrows bandgap and enhances interfacial charge transfer. • In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor shows ultra-sensitive ppb-level NO 2 detection performance at RT. • Superior RT NO 2 sensing performance stems from n-n heterojunction synergistic effects. • An intelligent sensing device based on the In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor was built. The growing demand for ultra-sensitive, power-efficient NO 2 sensors in wearable and portable electronics has driven intense research, yet achieving reliable ppb-level detection at room temperature (RT) remains a major unresolved challenge. The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor overcomes this limitation through multiple synergistic effects arising from n-n heterojunction construction. The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterojunction features a hierarchically porous morphology with larger specific surface area, enriched oxygen species and reduced E g . The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor displays outstanding NO 2 sensing performance with a response of 2209.77 toward 4 ppm NO 2 at RT, which is 250.82 times greater than that of the pristine In 2 O 3 sensor (8.81). More remarkably, the sensor realized an ultra-low theoretical limit of detection of 0.03 ppb, while still retaining a high response of 59.52 exposed to 500 ppb NO 2 . Moreover, the sensor demonstrated fast response/recovery kinetics, excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and remarkable humidity resistance. The superior performance is attributed to the multiple synergistic effects on morphological reconfiguration, bandgap narrowing, oxygen species enrichment, and vacancy-dominated unconventional charge transfer. An intelligent sensing device based on the In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor was built with an innovative humidity compensation-based alarm logic, effectively reducing false alarms caused by humidity. This work provides new insights for the rational design of high-performance RT NO 2 sensors for practical applications. Download: Download high-res image (212KB) Download: Download full-size image
