Carbon-modulated reduction synthesis of dual-valent Eu-doped La3Si2O8Cl phosphors: single-matrix white LEDs and high-resolution solar-blind UV detection

Xinhan Chen,Gaofan Chen,Ya-Nan Feng,Lizhen Zhang,Yan Yu,Lingyun Li

Developing single-component white-light phosphors remains challenging due to the difficulty in achieving dual emission from mixed-valent activators. Herein, we present a carbon-modulated reduction synthesis (CARS) method to fabricate Eu2+/Eu3+ co-doped La3Si2O8Cl (LSOCl) phosphors without requiring hazardous reducing atmospheres. By modulating carbon content (Eu : C = 1 : 0–2.4), the Eu2+/Eu3+ ratio is effectively controlled, enabling tunable emission from pink to white and yellow under 365 nm UV excitation. The optimized LSOCl:7%Eu (Eu : C = 1 : 1.9) exhibits broadband emission (390–720 nm) with a high color rendering index (Ra = 85.05), cool white light (5489 K, CIE: 0.33, 0.38), and stable performance under varying currents. Additionally, LSOCl:7%Eu (Eu : C = 1 : 1.4) shows excitation-dependent chromaticity shifts: minimal changes under solar-blind UV (250–280 nm) but dramatic variations at 280–350 nm, facilitating rapid detection. A solar-blind UV detector was designed, demonstrating fast response, high resolution (50% CIE shift at 330 nm), and anti-interference capability. The CARS method offers an eco-friendly, scalable route for dual-emission phosphors, showcasing their dual utility in high-quality white LEDs and sensitive UV detection technologies.

Instantaneous Aqueous Spray Synthesis of Halide-Encapsulated CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 Quantum Dots for Stable Green to Pure-Blue Mini/Micro-LEDs

Hai Ou,Xin An,Peng Li,Weikang Dong,Keke Guan,Jiaxin Qin,Yuanting Wu

CsPbX 3 (X = I, Br, Cl) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have shown great potential in optoelectronic devices due to their wide tunable bandgap, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and narrow emission spectra. Currently, methods for regulating blue light emission through component engineering or dimensional engineering suffer from issues such as halogen phase separation and increased defects, making it difficult to meet the strict requirements of display technology for pure blue light (CIE y < 0.15). Additionally, traditional synthesis processes are complex and have poor compatibility with Micro-LED miniaturization technology, which restricts their industrial application. Therefore, this study proposes an efficient and green spray drying method. By dissolving the perovskite precursors and halide salts in an aqueous solution, CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 QDs can be rapidly (<10 s) synthesized without organic solvents, and continuous tuning from green to blue light is achieved. This method effectively suppresses surface defects and phase separation through Cl element encapsulation, significantly enhancing stability. Moreover, its excellent processability supports spraying and film formation on any substrate, enabling the direct preparation of highly uniform Mini/Micro-LED pixel units. This technology provides a new approach for large-scale, low-cost manufacturing of perovskite QDs and is expected to accelerate the commercialization process of next-generation display technologies.

Fabrication of Ion Sensor Arrays and LEDs Using Carbon Dots From Single Synthesis and Their Formation Pathway Investigation Applying Synchronous Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Futian Mi,Turghun Muhammad,Kui Zhang,Yao-Qun Li

Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit diverse application potential in various fields due to their unique optical properties. However, CDs synthesized by conventional methods typically have complex compositions and lack efficient separation and purification techniques, limiting their performance in specific applications. In this work, we synthesized CDs via a solvothermal method and, for the first time, employed synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) to determine the relative content of each CD type during synthesis. By leveraging SFS's high selectivity and resistance to spectral overlap, we analyzed the mixture's composition, successfully identifying blue fluorescent CDs (B-CDs), green fluorescent CDs (G-CDs), and orange fluorescent CDs (O-CDs). The optimal synthesis conditions for G-CDs were 180°C for 5 h. A sensor array was constructed using the obtained CDs as sensing elements for distinguishing and recognizing metal ions, and the sensor array has shown good recognition and discrimination ability for various metal ions. G-CDs and O-CDs were mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to prepare CDs/PVP composite materials, demonstrating their potential in light emitting diode (LED) applications. SFS simplifies the synthesis and purification of CDs, providing key guidance for controlled CD synthesis, increased yield, and optimized fluorescence.

Highly Efficient Cyan-Green Emission in Self-Activated Rb3RV2O8 (R = Y, Lu) Vanadate Phosphors for Full-Spectrum White Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

Peipei Dang,Dongjie Liu,Yi Wei,Guogang Li,Hongzhou Lian,Mengmeng Shang,Jun Lin

Phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) rely on combining a near-ultraviolet (n-UV) or blue chip with trichromatic and yellow-emitting phosphors. It is challenging to discover cyan-green-emitting (480–520 nm) phosphors for compensating the spectral gap and producing full-spectrum white light. In this work, we successfully discovered two unprecedented bright cyan-green emitting Rb3RV2O8 (R = Y, Lu) phosphors that gives emission bands centered at 500 nm upon 362 nm n-UV light excitation. Interestingly, the both self-activated compounds exhibit high internal quantum efficiencies (IQEs) of 71% for Rb3YV2O8 and 85% for Rb3LuV2O8, respectively. Moreover, controllable emission color can be successfully tuned from cyan-green to orange-red across the warm white light region by design strategy of VO43– → Eu3+ energy transfer. The thermal quenching of as-prepared phosphors could be effectively mitigated by this design strategy. Finally, the as-fabricated n-UV (λex = 370 nm) pumped phosphor-converted (pc) W-LED devices utilizing Rb3RV2O8 (R = Y, Lu) along with commercial phosphors demonstrate well-distributed warm white light with high color-rendering index (CRI) of 91.9 and 93.5, and a low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5095 and 4946 K. It suggests that the both vanadate phosphors have potential applications in full-spectrum pc-WLEDs.

Achieving white-light/tunable emissions via the controllable energy transfer in the single Ba9La2Si6O24:Eu3+,Bi3+ phosphor for UV converted white LEDs

Zhiqin Zheng,Peizhang Xie,Panpan Yi,Jun Zhao,Lihong Liu,Facheng Yi

Nowadays, ultraviolet (UV) and blue converted phosphors have played a key role in the solid-state lighting field, and the white light is usually produced by mixing multiple phosphors. In this work, we report a type of UV converted single white phosphor, i.e. , Ba 9 La 2 Si 6 O 24 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ .Various techniques, such as powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and quantum efficiency (QE), have been used to characterize the samples. In Bi 3+ doped samples, upon excitation within the wavelength range of 250–380 nm can lead to three Bi 3+ emission bands ( i.e. , 358 nm, 415 nm, and 516 nm), but only one emission band peaking at 415 nm appears when the excitation wavelength exceeds 380 nm. Structural analysis and discussion on the PL intensity variation reveal there are three Bi 3+ luminescent centers at two different La 3+ sites and one Ba 2+ site. The Bi 3+ concentration-induced luminescent quenching is dominated by the d-d interaction. In view of the spectral overlap between the Bi 3+ emissions and the Eu 3+ excitation spectra , the energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Eu 3+ of the Ba 9 La 2 Si 6 O 24 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ is studied, and it is dominated by a dipole-quadrupole ( d - q ) interaction. Moreover, upon excitation at 365 nm, the emissions broadly tuning from blue, white and to red are achieved by varying the Eu 3+ content. For the white Ba 9 La 2 Si 6 O 24 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ sample, high temperature PL results show that it does not have severe degradation of emission intensity after increasing the temperature from 25 to 300 °C, exhibiting a good thermal stability . To show the potential application in the lighting fields, we fabricate a white light LEDs device by depositing this white phosphor on a 365 nm UV LED chip. As a result, the values, i.e. , a color rendering index (CRI) of 95, luminous efficiency of 80 lm/W, and color temperature (CT) of ~4215 K at chromaticity (0.382, 0.398), are achieved.

A novel red-emitting K5La(MoO4)4:Eu3+ phosphor with a high quantum efficiency for w-LEDs and visualization of latent fingerprints

Yifang Lin,Daomiao He,Kezhou Jiang,Renkang Qin,Jingfei Wang,Yumeng Shao,Jiaxin Yan,Ruijin Yu,Dan Zhang,Shouan Xie,Lei Zhao

A new series of red luminescent K 5 La(MoO 4 ) 4 : x Eu 3+ (KLMO: x Eu 3+ ) phosphors ( x = 0.05–1.00 mol) was successfully synthesized by a high-temperature solid phase reaction at a low reaction temperature (600 ℃). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, photoluminescence properties, thermal quenching mechanism, quantum efficiency, and lifetime decay curves of the phosphors were measured and discussed in detail. The prepared phosphors exhibited strong red-light emission (at 615 nm) upon excitation at 394 nm, attributed to the electric dipole 5 D 0 - 7 F 2 transition of Eu 3+ . The optimal doping concentration of phosphors is 0.8 mol. The quenching temperature of the KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ phosphor was found to exceed 480 K, with high activation energy ( E a ) of 0.43 eV, showing good thermal stability. Impressively, the KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ phosphor with a 0.8 mol concentration of Eu 3+ doping also has an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of up to 84.5%. The packaged white light emitting diode (w-LED) showed a good color rendering index (CRI) (89), correlated color temperature (CCT) (5117 K), and the Commission International de L′Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates (0.342, 0.345). Furthermore, the KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ phosphor was surface-functionalized with oleic acid (OA) (KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ @OA) to help better identify Level I-III fingerprint details with high resolution and contrast. The results show that the KLMO:Eu 3+ and KLMO:Eu 3+ @OA phosphors have very promising applications in the w-LEDs and latent fingerprints (LFPs).

Novel highly luminescent double-perovskite Ca2GdSbO6:Eu3+ red phosphors with high color purity for white LEDs: Synthesis, crystal structure, and photoluminescence properties

Zongjie Zhang,Liangling Sun,Balaji Devakumar,Jia Liang,Shaoying Wang,Qi Sun,Sanjay J. Dhoble,Xiaoyong Huang

High-efficiency red-emitting phosphors are required to fabricate high-performance white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, the novel highly efficient Eu 3+ -activated Ca 2 GdSbO 6 double-perovskite red phosphors with good thermal stability toward warm-white LEDs were reported. A series of Ca 2 Gd (1- x ) Eu x SbO 6 red phosphors with different Eu 3+ doping concentrations ( x  = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7 and 0.8) were synthesized by using high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Under the excitation of 396 nm near-ultraviolet light, these Ca 2 Gd (1- x ) Eu x SbO 6 phosphors showed intense red emissions peaking at 612 nm due to the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition of Eu 3+ ions. The strongest luminescence intensity reached when Eu 3+ doping concentration was x  = 0.5, and the critical distance between Eu 3+ activators was calculated to be 7.97 Å. The concentration quenching mechanism was due to the dipole-dipole interaction of Eu 3+ ions. The CIE color coordinates of the optimal Ca 2 Gd 0.5 Eu 0.5 SbO 6 phosphors were determined to be (0.6629, 0.3367), and the corresponding color purity reached about 94.9%. Importantly, the Ca 2 Gd 0.5 Eu 0.5 SbO 6 phosphors revealed outstanding internal quantum efficiency of 73% and good thermal stability. The emission intensity of Ca 2 Gd 0.5 Eu 0.5 SbO 6 phosphors at 423 K still remained about 73% of its initial value at 303 K. Finally, a prototype white LED device was fabricated by coating the phosphor blend of commercial blue-emitting BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ , green-emitting (Ba, Sr) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ and our as-prepared red-emitting Ca 2 Gd 0.5 Eu 0.5 SbO 6 on a 395 nm LED chip. Under 20 mA driven current, the device showed bright warm-white light with CIE color coordinates of (0.3888, 0.3943), correlated color temperature of 3911 K, and color rendering index of 88.4. The results demonstrated that the developed novel red-emitting Ca 2 Gd 0.5 Eu 0.5 SbO 6 phosphors could be used as potential color converters in white LEDs.

Highly efficient near-UV-excitable Ca2YHf2Al3O12:Ce3+,Tb3+ green-emitting garnet phosphors with potential application in high color rendering warm-white LEDs

Shaoying Wang,Balaji Devakumar,Qi Sun,Jia Liang,Liangling Sun,Xiaoyong Huang

Inorganic phosphors with broadband near-ultraviolet (near-UV) excitation and efficient visible emission are highly important for fabricating high-performance near-UV-pumped white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, we report on novel efficient near-UV-excitable Ce3+/Tb3+ ion co-activated Ca2YHf2Al3O12 (CYHA) green-emitting garnet phosphors, which were successfully prepared through a high-temperature solid-state reaction process. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental mapping, photoluminescence, CIE color coordinates, the internal and external quantum efficiency, and temperature-dependent emission spectra were used to characterize the samples. Interestingly, due to the efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions in CYHA, the CYHA:Ce3+,Tb3+ samples presented a wide excitation band in the 370–470 nm region peaking around 408 nm owing to the 4f–5d transition of Ce3+ ions, and under 408 nm excitation they showed intense characteristic sharp green emission around 543 nm corresponding to the 5D4 → 7F0–6 transitions of Tb3+ ions. The energy transfer mechanism from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions was ascribed to the quadruple–quadruple interaction, and the energy transfer efficiency reached as high as 93.2%. Notably, the composition-optimized CYHA:0.03Ce3+,0.6Tb3+ sample exhibited a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 78.5% and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 56%, which were much higher than those of the Tb3+ singly-activated CYHA:0.6Tb3+ sample (IQE = 8%, EQE = 2.2%). Finally, a prototype white LED device was made by combining a 400 nm near-UV-emitting LED chip with a phosphor blend of the as-prepared CYHA:0.03Ce3+,0.6Tb3+ green phosphors, commercial BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ blue phosphors and commercial CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ red phosphors, which emitted bright warm-white light with good CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.391, 0.356), a low correlated color temperature of 3528 K and a high color rendering index of 92.3 under 120 mA driving current. This work opens up new opportunities for the development of efficient color converters toward near-UV-pumped warm-white LEDs with high color rendering index.

A Facile Approach to Solid-State White Emissive Carbon Dots and Their Application in UV-Excitable and Single-Component-Based White LEDs

Xiangyu Feng,Kai Jiang,Haibo Zeng,Hengwei Lin

Large-scale applications of conventional rare-earth phosphors in white light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs) are restricted by the non-renewable raw material sources and high energy consumption during the production process. Recently, carbon dots (CDs) have been proposed as promising alternatives to rare-earth phosphors and present bright prospects in white lighting. However, the use of CDs in W-LEDs still has two major obstacles, i.e., solid-state quenching and lack of single-component white emissive products. In this work, a facile, rapid, and scalable method for the preparation of solid-state white emissive CDs (W-CDs) is reported via microwave-irradiation heating of L-aspartic acid (AA) in the presence of ammonia. The W-CDs exhibit blue photoluminescence (PL) in dilute aqueous dispersion and their emission spectra gradually broaden (emerging new emissions at orange-yellow regions) with concentration increases. Interestingly, the W-CDs powder displays a very broad PL spectrum covering nearly the whole visible-light region under ultraviolet (UV) excitation, which is responsible for the observed white emission. Further studies revealed that the self-quenching-resistance feature of the W-CDs is probably due to a covering of polymer-like structures on their surface, thus avoiding the close contact of nanoparticles with each other. PL emission of the W-CDs is reasonably ascribed to a cross-linked enhanced effect (CEE) of the sub-fluorophores contained in the material (e.g., –NH2and C=O). Finally, applications of the W-CDs in fabricating single-component-based W-LEDs using commercially available UV chips were attempted and shown to exhibit satisfactory performances including high white light-emitting purity, high color rendering index (CRI), and tunable correlated color temperature (CCT), thus rendering great promise for W-CDs in the field of white lighting. Keywords:carbon dots;photoluminescence;solid state emission;white light-emitting diodes

Restraint of Nonradiative Recombination via Modulation of n-Phase Distribution through Interfacial Lithium Salt Insertion for High-Performance Pure-Blue Perovskite LEDs

Dicai Zhuang,Yingyu Wang,Qiuting Cai,Lanlan Zhai,He Huang,Guanghong Yang,Yun Yang,Lijie Zhang,Chao Zou

Quasi-two-dimensional perovskite has been widely used in blue perovskite light-emitting diodes. However, the performance of these devices is still hampered by random phase distribution, nonradiative recombination, and imbalanced carrier transport. In this work, an effective strategy is proposed to mitigate these limitations by inserting lithium salts at the interfaces between the hole transport layer (HTL) and the perovskite layer. The perovskite film on the inserted Li2CO3 layer exhibits reasonable n-value redistribution, which leads to the repressive nonradiation recombination and enhanced carrier transport. Moreover, the inserted Li2CO3 layer also improves the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and hinders indium ion diffusion from the PEDOT:PSS layer to the perovskite film, which inhibits exciton quenching and nonradiative recombination loss at the HTL/perovskite interface. Taking advantage of these merits, we have successfully fabricated efficient pure-blue PeLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 6.2% at 472 nm and a luminance of 726 cd cm–2. The restraint of nonradiative recombination at the interface offers a promising approach for efficient pure-blue PeLEDs.

Study of hybrid nanoscatterer for enhancing light efficiency of quantum dot-converted light-emitting diodes

Chenyini Xu,Meng Chen,Shu Xu,Chong Geng

Optical scatterer additives play a critical role in enhancing the light conversion efficiency and uniformity of quantum dot-converted light-emitting diodes (Qc-LEDs). This study investigates the impact of optical characteristics and morphology of nanoscatterer on the light conversion and extraction efficiency of Qc-LEDs. Various metal oxides and boron nitride nanoparticles and nanoplates with different diffraction index were selected to carry out the study. Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation was employed to evaluate the scattering effect of various nanosphere and nanoplate scatterers on the optical performance of the Qc-LEDs. The simulation results revealed that the hybrid nanoscatterer integrates the forward-scattering from the nanosphere and backward-scattering of blue light from the nanoplate. Spectral analysis was conducted to examine the optical performance of Qc-LEDs with varying combinations and concentrations of nanoscatterers. TiO 2 nanoparticles and Al 2 O 3 nanoplates were found to be the best combination for maximal light conversion and extraction efficiency within Qc-LEDs. The results indicate an optimal light efficiency is obtained with the optimal ratio of 1:2:2 for quantum dots, TiO 2 nanoparticles, and Al 2 O 3 nanoplates. These findings reveal the relationship between optical properties, morphology, and light conversion efficiency in Qc-LEDs, highlighting the advantages of the hybrid nanoscatterers for improving optical performance of Qc-LEDs.

Structure-modulation-enhanced multi-emission luminescence in Sb3+/Er3+ co-doped double perovskites for single-component white/NIR LEDs and dual-mode thermometry

Wei Xu,Futao Li,Ruichen Xu,Xiaochen Fang,Xiaohui Ruan,Shuru Zhong,Jun Wang,Hai Huang,Cheng Zhang,Biao Zheng

Lead-free double perovskites (DPs) are emerging as sustainable luminescent materials owing to their low-cost synthesis, low toxicity, and superior stability. However, their practical applications are impeded by low luminescence efficiency and a single emission center. To overcome these challenges, we reported a structure-modulation strategy to develop Sb/Er: Cs 2 Na 0 . 95 Ag 0 . 05 YbCl 6 (Sb/Er: CNAYC) DPs by co-doping Cs 2 NaYbCl 6 with Sb 3+ /Er 3+ ions and substituting Na + with Ag  +  ions. The Sb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doping can introduce multiple emission centers from visible to near-infrared (NIR). Meanwhile, the Na + -Ag + alloying-induced lattice distortion not only enhances the photoluminescence efficiency by breaking the parity-forbidden transitions, but also enables the color of emission to be tuned to the white light range. The Sb/Er: CNAYC DPs simultaneously deliver efficient blue (460 nm@Sb 3+ ), green/red (552/667 nm@ Er 3+ ) and NIR (980/1540 nm@Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ) emissions, providing a promising luminescent material for single-component white/NIR LEDs. Furthermore, the Sb/Er: CNAYC DPs also display pronounced temperature-sensitive fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) and lifetime characteristics, enabling them well-suited for dual-mode temperature sensing. This study is expected to establish a universal lattice-modulation strategy that yields single-component luminescent materials exhibiting both high-efficiency white/NIR emission and accurate multimode thermometry for next-generation optoelectronic applications.
