The acute hippocampal slice is useful for understanding how epilepsy spatially initiates, propagates, and terminates in the hippocampus, which is vital to study the epileptic mechanism in it. However, it is challenging to detect the electrical signals of the main cell layer (the granular cell layer in the dentate gyrus (DG) and the pyramidal cell layer in CA1 and CA3a–c), which play an important role in epilepsy, because it is difficult to be accurately located by electrodes and typically show low throughput. In this study, a special in vitro microelectrode array (MEA) for rat hippocampal slices was fabricated. The recording sites of the MEA were designed along the main cell layer to record accurately the electrical signals of this layer in each hippocampal sub-region. A special “less-hydrophilic-MWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS modification method” for in vitro MEA was applied to deposit electrochemically the MWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites onto the surface of the microelectrodes, which significantly improved their performance with low impedance (36.41 ± 3.07 kΩ), small phase delay (−41.2 ± 4.90°), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N = 5.4) and good biocompatibility. The application of high-K + -ACSF and D-AP5 (NMDA receptor antagonist) showed a neural signal projection pathway of the epileptic discharges in the hippocampal slice. The epileptic discharges originated in CA3b, where the neurons acted as a pacemaker, and spread to CA1 and DG bi-directionally along the main cell layer. Moreover, the epileptic discharges spread backward (CA3b to DG) faster than forward (CA3b to CA1). The MEA provides a reliable and sensitive dedicated biosensor for hippocampal slices.

In this manuscript, an electrochemical sensor modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and silver sulfide (Ag 2 S) was prepared by means of potentiostatic deposition method for the detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene. The poloxamer (Px) was then electrodeposition onto the surface of MWCNTs and Ag 2 S as a film-forming material to prevent the leakage of nanomaterial, to improve the stability of the modified electrode and then enhance the current signal, which contributed to the high sensitivity of the electrode. During the electrodeposition process, some influence factors, such as the deposition cycle number, deposition time, and applied potential of silver sulfide, and the deposition time and applied potential of Px have been inspected. Under optimal conditions, the obtained sensor showed good catalytic performance for the reduction reaction of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene. The proposed sensor also exhibited excellent stability and reproducibility, providing a wide linear ranges from 0.22 to 15.4 μmol L -1 and a low detection limit of 3.23 nmol L -1 (S/N = 3). It also provides a satisfactory result when applied to the actual sample detection.

Arsenite contamination in groundwater seriously impairs human health due to its high mobility and toxicity. Herein, a novel heterostructured MWCNTs@PANI@TiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized via a one-pot polymerization process for the adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation of As(III) from aqueous solution. In the dark, the as-synthesized nanocomposite had a high adsorption capacity of As(III) at about 0.29 mmol·g–1 with an initial As(III) concentration of 0.067–0.801 mmol·L–1 at 298.15 K and exhibited a stable adsorption capacity in a wide pH range of 2–9. The adsorption kinetics of As(III) on MWCNTs@PANI@TiO2 was in accordance with the PSO model and was mainly controlled by chemical adsorption. Under visible light irradiation, the adsorption amount of As(III) on MWCNTs@PANI@TiO2 was substantially enhanced by about 57%, and the photocatalytic conversion of As(III) to As(V) was found to be caused by the photogenerated holes and superoxide free radical (•O2–). The hypothesized adsorption mechanisms of As(III) and As(V) ions on the nanocomposite were possibly ascribed to surface complexation and hydrogen-bonded interactions. The heterostructured MWCNTs@PANI@TiO2 nanocomposite offers a promising candidate for highly efficient removal of As(III) ions from arsenite-polluted groundwater.

The progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is positively correlated with the phosphorylation damage of Tau-441 protein, which is the marker with the most potential for the early detection of AD. The low content of Tau-441 in human serum is a major difficulty for the realization of content detection. Herein, we prepared an electrochemical immunosensor modified with Poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene)-poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS)/Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs-COOH) nanocomposites based on electrochemical immunoassay technology for the low-concentration detection of Tau-441. The immunosensor based on the nanocomposite can take advantage of the characteristics of conductive polymers to achieve electrical signal amplification and use MWCNTs-COOH to increase the contact area of the active site and bond with the Tau-441 antibodies on the electrode. The physicochemical and electrical properties of PEDOT: PSS/MWCNTs-COOH were studied by in situ characterization techniques and electrochemical characterization methods, indicating that the immunosensor has high selectivity and sensitivity to the Tau-441 immune reaction. Under optimized optimal conditions, the electrochemical immunosensor detected a range of concentrations of Tau-441 to obtain a low detection of limit (0.0074 ng mL−1) and demonstrated good detection performance through actual human serum sample testing experiments. Therefore, the study provides an effective reference value for the early diagnosis of AD.Keywords:PEDOT: PSS;MWCNTs-COOH;nanocomposites;electrochemical immunosensor;Tau-441

Herein, a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on aptamer folding was constructed to detect aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in peanuts. Specifically, polyethylenimine-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2@MWCNTs–PEI) were used as the electrode matrix to enable a large specific surface area, which were characterized by the Randles–Sevcik equation. Additionally, AuNPs were used to immobilize the aptamer via the Au–S covalent bond and provide a favorable microenvironment for signal enhancement. Methylene blue (MB) was modified at the proximal 3′ termini of the aptamer as the capture probe, while the signal transduction of the sensor was obtained through changes in conformation and position of MB induced by the binding between AFB1 and the probe. Changes in spatial conformation could be recorded by electrochemical methods more readily. This electrochemical aptasensor demonstrated remarkable sensitivity to AFB1 with an extensive detection range (1 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL) and a lower limit detection (1.0 × 10–3 ng/mL). Moreover, using the constructed aptasensor, AFB1 was identified successfully in peanut samples, with recoveries ranging from 95.83 to 107.53%, illustrating its potential use in determining AFB1 in food.

In this research, a signal-off electrochemical aptasensor with high sensitivity was constructed for trace detection of zearalenone (ZEN). Specifically, Ce-based metal–organic framework and multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite was functionalized with polyethyleneimine ( [email protected] ) and served as sensing platform for its high surface area and excellent electrochemical active. Subsequently, toluidine blue (TB) was electrodeposited as the signal probe, and [email protected] nanoparticles ( [email protected] ) were dropped for the attachment of aptamer (ZEA). In the presence of ZEN, the ZEA would specifically recognize and combine with the target, causing a decrease of electrochemical signal from TB. Under the optimal conditions, the aptasensor exhibited good linear relationship for ZEN in a concentration range from 5.0 × 10 −5 to 50.0 ng/mL, while the limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) and limit of quantitation (LOQ, S/N = 10) were 1.0 × 10 −5 ng/mL and 2.9 × 10 −5 ng/mL, respectively. Ultimately, the aptasensor was successfully applied into ZEN detection in semen coicis real samples.

Sensitive and effective detection of xanthine oxidase (XOD) is essential for assessing human health. Herein, a dual-enzyme-based cascaded reaction system was developed for xanthine and xanthine oxidase assay based on the peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity of Fe 3 O 4 @MWCNTs/Hemin nanocomposite. The XOD could catalyze xanthine to produce H 2 O 2 , which is subsequently converted by Fe 3 O 4 @MWCNTs/Hemin into hydroxyl radicals (·OH) to oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce a light blue. Notably, it is demonstrated that the modification of MWCNTs and Hemin could significantly enhance the POD-like activity from 9.78 × 10 −8 M s −1 ( V max value of Fe 3 O 4 ) to 23.34 10 −8 M s −1 ( V max value of Fe 3 O 4 @MWCNTs/Hemin), which makes the detection of xanthine oxidase more sensitive. By using the smartphone to capture the colorimetric signal of oxidized TMB (oxTMB), the assay can detect xanthine and XOD as low as 0.250 µM and 0.216 mU mL −1 , respectively. The reliability of the method in human serum suggested satisfactory spiked recoveries in the range of 92.350–105%. This work provided a new insight for Fe 3 O 4 -based nanozyme design and monitoring XOD level in blood. Graphical Abstract

This work established a novel nucleic acid aptamer sensor for the sensitive and selective detection of AFB1 (Aflatoxin B1), which has important implication for food safety. In a word, we synthesized MXene/MWCNTs/NiCo 2 O 4 composite nanomaterials to improve the sensitivity of the aptamer sensor. The surface of the composite nanomaterials was modified with PDA (poly dopamine) in order to immobilize the NH 2 -cDNA-aptamer complex on the electrode surface by the Schiff base reaction. Characterization of MXene/MWCNTs/NiCo 2 O 4 nanocomposites was carried by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Meanwhile, 4-carboxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl free radical (TEMPO-COOH) was used as an electrochemical signal to detect AFB1. Under optimal conditions, the electrochemical DPV signal decreased with increasing AFB1 concentration, ranging from 2.5 to 200 ng/mL, and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) at 1.890 ng/mL (S/N = 3). In addition, the ensemble sensor showed great reproducibility, stability, and selectivity, which has been successfully applied to the determination of AFB1 in maize flour and maize residue samples with recoveries in the 92.2 ~ 109.8% range. Compared to other detection methods for AFB1, this approach afforded comparable detection limits and detection ranges, in reduced analysis time (within 5 min). Thus, a time-saving, sensitive, and selective approach was achieved for the rapid determination of AFB1 in food.

Semiconductor photocatalysis is a promising technology for removing contaminants from water. Particularly, visible-light photocatalysis has attracted much attention because of its potential to utilize solar energy. However, nano-sized visible-light-driven photocatalysts easily aggregate during water treatment. Besides, it is difficult to recycle them from treated systems. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop visible-light-responsive immobilized photocatalysts with high activity. In this work, MWCNTs/Ag 3 PO 4 /polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ternary composite fiber membranes (TCFMs) with good photocatalytic performance were fabricated by electrospinning technique combined with in situ Ag 3 PO 4 forming reaction. Due to the addition of MWCNTs, the band gap of MWCNTs/Ag 3 PO 4 /PAN TCFMs became narrower than that of Ag 3 PO 4 /PAN binary composite fiber membranes (BCFMs), which made MWCNTs/Ag 3 PO 4 /PAN TCFMs be able to use light at longer wavelengths. Compared with Ag 3 PO 4 /PAN BCFMs, the as-prepared MWCNTs/Ag 3 PO 4 /PAN TCFMs showed enhanced photocatalytic activity and stability for degrading rhodamine B (RhB) in batch processing systems, which mainly ascribed to fast electron transfer from Ag 3 PO 4 to MWCNTs and the resulting high electron–hole (e − –h + ) separation efficiency. Radical trapping experiments revealed that holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals ( · O 2 − ) played primary roles in RhB degradation. In addition, the flexible MWCNTs/Ag 3 PO 4 /PAN TCFMs also showed potential practical application in the continuous wastewater treatment by a suitable photocatalytic membrane reactor. This work provides a facile approach to prepare flexible supported photocatalytic membrane with visible-light response, high activity and good stability.

Since wearable pressure sensors have promising applications in the fields of human physiological signal detection and bionic robots, there is an urgent need for wearable pressure sensors with comprehensive attributes such as high sensitivity and wide detection range. Here, we introduce a facile electrospinning process to fabricate a film composed of thermoplastic polyurethane/carboxyl multiwalled carbon nanotube/V 2 CT X -MXene (TPU/c-MWCNTs/V 2 C). This film has high sensitivity and great linearity, designed for flexible piezoresistive sensors. To further enhance sensor performance, we applied a spin-coating of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on the sandpaper surface to create a top substrate with intermittent spinosum structures. Additionally, a layer of TPU fibers was electrospun between the conductive film and the interdigitated electrodes. The assembled components form a flexible piezoresistive sensor with a wide detection range of 0–200 kPa, a high sensitivity of 545.2 kPa −1 , a low detection limit of 5 Pa, a short response time of 48 ms, and excellent long-term durability after 7000 loading/unloading cycles, making the piezoresistive sensor highly discriminating for detecting complex human movements. Thanks to the great sensing performance and stable structure, we conducted various demonstrations to capture human physiological signals, including signals of muscle activity and pulse. These findings indicate the potential of the designed flexible pressure sensor for applications in electronic skin and smart devices.

The carbon-nanotube-doped Schiff bases (CDSBs) and their iron complexes (CDSI) were synthesized by the in situ polymerization and coordination reaction. The phase structure and morphology of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. In particular, it can be found that the diamagnetic substance CDSF turns into paramagnetic CDSI after doping Fe3+. Furthermore, the eminent electrical conductivity and microwave electromagnetic loss behavior of CDSI shed light on organic–metal ion complexes (OMICs) as a promising lightweight absorbent. The feasibility of this strategy was demonstrated by the successful fabrication of the CDSI/MWCNTs/PVA composites membrane. The reflection loss (RL) of the electromagnetic wave arrives at the lowest value −18.6 dB at 10.32 GHz, and the effective bandwidth (RL below −10 dB) could reach 5.8 GHz (8.1 to 13.04 GHz) with the thickness of 0.54 mm and the surface density of 0.44 kg/m2. Such excellent low weight, low thickness, and broadband electromagnetic wave absorption membrane may pave the way for new applications of OMIC-derived materials.

An electrochemical sensor for the detection of paracetamol (PAT) was reported employing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and the fourth generation poly(amidoamine) dendrimers (G4.0 PAMAM). The strategy of this work lies on the formation of a stable covalent linkage between carboxylated MWCNTs and amine terminated G4.0 PAMAM via covalent layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly, which provides larger surface areas for efficient adsorption of PAT. The constructed electrode was characterized first by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and then the electrochemical behavior of PAT on the (MWCNTs–G4.0)6/GCE was investigated in detail by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronocoulometry. Under optimal conditions, the experimental results demonstrated that the constructed sensor exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward PAT, and a wide linear range from 3.0 × 10−7 to 2.0 × 10−4 M was obtained with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0 × 10−7 M (S/N = 3). Moreover, it could also be applied to the determination of PAT in commercial tablets and human serum, and the satisfactory results confirm the applicability of this sensor in practical analysis.
