In this work, we reported an energy-saving and cost-efficient process for the (re)generation of NaBH4 by ball milling hydrated borax (Na2B4O7·10H2O) with a Mg–Al alloy under ambient conditions. The introduction of abundant and readily available Al can increase air stability of the reducing agent. A high yield up to 85.2% could be achieved by using Mg17Al12 because of its hardness and brittleness.

Mg doped Ni(OH) 2 was synthesized and investigated as an efficient material to activate persulfate (PS) for phenol degradation. The property of the Ni(OH) 2 material was enhanced by Mg doping as the removal efficiency of phenol was increased from 74.82 % in Ni(OH) 2 /PS system to 89.53 % in Mg-doped Ni(OH) 2 /PS system within 20 min. Such a high removal efficiency revealed that doping Mg into Ni(OH) 2 brings about more defects (oxygen vacancies), which facilitated the formation of more active species in the degradation process. The removal efficiencies of phenol increased with the increase of the initial pH from 3 to 11. The influences of Cl − , NO 3 − and HCO 3 − on the stability of the system were also studied and the results showed that removal rates of all systems in the presence of these different inorganic anions could reached about 90 % within 20 min. Based on the electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments, 1 O 2 , O 2 ·- , ·OH and SO 4 •− were identified as the active species in Mg-doped Ni(OH) 2 /PS system for phenol degradation and a degradation mechanism was proposed for this system. In addition, the as-prepared material retained its activation performance even after 3 repeated cycles.

Layered double hydroxides intercalated with sorbate anion (SLDHs) was a potential material for sorbic acid controlled-releasing, UV barrier, reinforcement of rubber and flame retardancy filler. The addition reactions of sorbate anion (SAa) with ethylene and H radical were calculated as spontaneous on B3LYP/6–311++ (d, p) theory level by GAMESS-US and the electrostatic potential (ESP) of SAa was calculated by Multiwfn package and figured by VMD. SLDHs was successfully synthesized by co-precipitation with chlorides, and intercalating way of SAa was first constructed by electrostatic potential analysis, and then the successful intercalation of SAa was confirmed by X-ray diffractions (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). SLDHs possessed assembled flaky morphology and have good thermal stability with a water contact angle near 95°. This study may have a significance on the promotion of the scale application of SLDHs practically.

Introduction Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of the bone. The existing adjuvant chemotherapy regimens, while improving the overall survival, have been limited by the significant systemic toxicity. Substantial clinical and research efforts are being invested to develop novel pharmaceutical agents. Resveratrol (Res) has been suggested to have a chemopreventive effect. However, the mechanism of Res in osteosarcoma remains to be elucidated. Material and methods The MG-63 osteosarcoma cell culture model was used to investigate the chemotherapeutic effect of Res. MTT assay, wound healing assay, and Transwell migration assay were used to document the effect of Res on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, respectively. Apoptosis in MG-63 cells was quantified with the TUNEL assay. Western blotting analysis was used to examine the molecular changes following Res treatment. Data processing and analysis were conducted using GraphPad Prism 5.0. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Our data suggested that Res blocks cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, and activates apoptotic cell death in osteosarcoma MG-63 cells. We found that Res potentially down-regulates nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and Akt intracellular signaling transduction. Moreover, the combination of Res and pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), an NF-κB inhibitor, resulted in synergistic growth inhibition of osteosarcoma. Conclusions Our in vitro preclinical study in the MG-63 cell line model supports the translation of Res to the clinical management of patients with osteosarcoma.

The polymerized Hydroxyquinoline (HQ) coatings incorporated with corrosion inhibitor nano-Graphene Oxide (GO) particles were fabricated on treated magnesium AZ31 alloy. The effect of surface treatment of AZ31 using either oxidation or phosphating was much more effective than GO embedment on the corrosion resistance and self-healing functionality. Surface treatment prior to GO/HQ deposition plays a vital role in initiating more anchoring bonds between molecules to fasten any scratch healing. The anticorrosion behavior of the GO/HQ hybrid coating will be discussed in the light of SEM, XRD , XPS and FTIR analysis.

Thermochemical heat storage uses a reversible chemical reaction to store thermal energy. This thermal energy storage method has high energy density and allows long-term thermal energy storage. MgO/Mg(OH) 2 is a promising reversible reaction for thermochemical heat storage systems. The performance of this reversible reaction inside a reactor plays a key role in its practical applications. The direct type heat transfer reactor is a novel design compared with an indirect powder bed reactor. It allows the gaseous heat transfer fluid to flow through the powder in order to break the heat transfer limitation from the heat exchanger between the MgO/Mg(OH) 2 powder and the heat transfer fluid. In this study, we evaluated the performance of a direct type MgO/Mg(OH) 2 reactor under various operating conditions. Parametric analyses indicated that the heat output is limited by the reaction rate rather than the heat transfer efficiency. Results also showed the best bed thickness in order to achieve the highest temperature output. Material characterization indicated that the MgO/Mg(OH) 2 particles did not agglomerate with each other after 15 heat charging and discharging cycles.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the most commonly used orthopedic implant material. In recent years, the emergence of cationic doped hydroxyapatite has revealed more possibilities for the biological application of HA. Conventional HA does not promote new bone formation because of its poor osteoinductive activity, and has a similar density to that of bone, leading to difficulty in distinguishing both via imaging. Magnesium ions are useful for regulating the cellular behavior and promoting bone regeneration. Ba ion related compounds, such as BaSO4, have a strong X-ray shielding effect. In this study, Ba/Mg@HA was synthesized to prepare Ba/Mg@HA/PLGA composites, and we aimed to investigate if Ba/Mg@HA/PLGA composites enhanced bone repair on osteoblasts and tibial defects, as well as the X-ray and CT imaging ability of bone implants in rats. The in vitro experimental results showed that the Ba/Mg@HA/PLGA composites significantly improved the attachment and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. These include the promotion of mineral deposition, enhancement of alkaline phosphatase activity, upregulation of OCN and COL-1 gene expression, and increase in COL-1 and OCN protein expression in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. The in vivo experimental results showed that the Ba/Mg@HA/PLGA composites significantly increased the rate of bone defect healing and the expression of BMP-2 and COL-1 in the bones of rats. X-ray and CT imaging results showed that the Ba/Mg@HA/PLGA composites enhanced the X-ray imaging ability. These findings indicate that the Ba/Mg@HA/PLGA composites can effectively promote bone formation and improve the X-ray and CT imaging abilities to a certain extent.

This study demonstrates the hydrogen sorption improvement of Mg through the three-dimensional decoration of a noble catalyst. An Mg@Pd composite was synthesized by decorating Pd nanoparticles onto the Mg matrix via a facile solid-gas reduction method. Electron tomography analysis confirms the formation of a three-dimensional (3D) architecture of the Mg@Pd particulate composite . The Mg@Pd composite shows excellent hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics even at low temperatures as compared to a catalyst-free Mg sample. Moreover, the hydrogenated Mg@Pd composite can desorb hydrogen at as low as 246 °C that is 87 °C lower than that of the pure MgH 2 . Hydrogenation of the Mg@Pd composite leads to the development of a multiphase system consisted of PdH 0.706 , MgPd and MgH 2 whereas dehydrogenation occurred via two simultaneous desorption reactions results in Mg 6 Pd and Mg phases. The uniform dispersion of Pd nanoparticles on the surface of the 3D Mg matrix has provided with fast catalytic interfaces via the hydrogen “spillover” mechanism while the concomitant hydrogen diffusion processes are enhanced by the “hydrogen pump” effect of PdH 0.706 /MgPd interfaces. Furthermore, the low temperature hydrogen sorption performances of the Mg@Pd composite can be attributed to the interphase reversibility between MgPd and Mg 6 Pd leading to the thermodynamic destabilization of MgH 2 . This study suggests that strategically new approaches can govern significant improvements in hydrogen storage properties of Mg-based systems.

Noble metal-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates have been developed for decades. However, nonreproducible aggregation and photoinduced molecular degradation limit the development of SERS technology. To overcome the shortcomings of noble metal-based SERS substrates, we designed ZrO 2 -based nanoparticles (NPs). By doping Mg and/or Zn ions into these ZrO 2 NPs , the SERS activity was significantly improved. Mg/Zn codoping of ZrO 2 resulted in a much higher oxygen deficiency, thereby providing a sufficient surface state energy (Ess) level to enable charge transfer (CT). The primary contribution for the Mg/Zn-codoped ZrO 2 was determined to be from the CT resonance effect, resulting in an enhancement factor (EF) as high as 10 4 . Most importantly, the CT-induced enhancement of Raman scattering based on Mg/Zn-codoped ZrO 2 has already demonstrated some promising applications in highly sensitive quinolone antibiotic drug determination. Different kinds of quinolone antibiotic drugs can be easily identified and quantitatively analyzed with high sensitivity and reproducibility.

The growing demands for material longevity in marine environments necessitate the development of highly efficient, low-cost, and durable corrosion-protective coatings. Although magnesium alloys are widely used in the automotive and aerospace industries, severe corrosion issues still hinder their long-term service in naval architecture. In the present work, an epoxy composite coating containing sericite nanosheets is prepared on the AZ31B Mg alloy using a one-step electrophoretic deposition method to improve corrosion resistance. Due to the polyetherimide (PEI) modification, positively charged sericite nanosheets can be highly orientated in an epoxy coating under the influence of an electric field. The sericite-incorporated epoxy coating prepared in the emulsion with 4 wt.% sericite exhibits the highest corrosion resistance, with its corrosion current density being 6 orders of magnitude lower than that of the substrate. Electrochemical measurements and immersion tests showed that the highly orientated sericite nanosheets in the epoxy coating have an excellent barrier effect against corrosive media, thus significantly improving the long-term anti-corrosion performance of the epoxy coating. This work provides new insight into the design of lamellar filler/epoxy coatings with superior anticorrosion performance and shows promise in the corrosion protection of magnesium alloys.

Mg-ion batteries (MIBs), as a next-generation battery, are drawing considerable attention due to abundant and well-distributed magnesium sources available. The construction of structurally ideal bimetallic sulfides can effectively alleviate the poor cycling stability of MIBs. Herein, we report for the first time, the synthesis of bimetallic sulfide CoNi 2 S 4 hollow nanospheres (CoNi 2 S 4 HSs) via a one-step solvothermal method and their application as a cathode material for MIBs. Compared with common unary transition metal sulfides, CoNi 2 S 4 HSs have more electrochemically active sites and higher electronic conductivity. Meanwhile, the distinct morphology of CoNi 2 S 4 HSs exhibits higher surface area, smaller charge-transfer resistance, and higher magnesium diffusion coefficient. Further, CoNi 2 S 4 HSs deliver a considerable reversible capacity of 290.1 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , and a high capacity of 97.8 mAh g −1 can be achieved at 1000 mA g −1 , demonstrating excellent rate performance. The structural integrity, high specific capacity, good rate capability and cycling stability of CoNi 2 S 4 HSs render it a promising cathode material for advanced MIBs.

As a promising supercapacitor electrode material, NiMn-LDH has attracted great attention due to its high theoretical capacity and easy preparation. However, the development and application of NiMn-LDH in supercapacitors are limited because of its poor cycling stability and low electrical conductivity. To solve these problems, a NiMnMg-LDH with a three-dimensional porous morphology has been successfully fabricated by doping with Mg to improve its electrochemical properties. Experimental results indicate that NiMnMg-LDH-7 delivers a specific capacitance of 1772 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Moreover, it can still reach 1080 F g−1 when the current density is increased 10 times, suggesting excellent rate capability. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) NiMnMg-LDH-7//AC can provide a high energy density of 28 W h kg−1 at a power density of 700 W kg−1. Furthermore, the energy density can still reach 16 W h kg−1 even if the power density is increased to close to 3500 W kg−1. The capacity retention of this ASC device can reach 74% after 3000 cycles at a current density of 3 A g−1. These excellent properties of NiMnMg-LDH can be attributed to the obvious improvement of its specific surface area and electrical conductivity owing to doping with the element magnesium. We believe that this work could provide a new idea for the preparation of high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors.
