To simultaneously increase the Mg 2+ /Li + separating performance under high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios of polyethylene/polyamide (PE/PA) thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes, 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (Cyclen) was added in the aqueous phase with polyethyleneimine (PEI) monomer. During reverse interface polymerization (RIP) on polyethylene (PE) substrates, phthaloyl chloride (PC) was added to the organic phase with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) monomer. It was found that the addition of Cyclen and/or PC could both increase the hydrophilicity, surface roughness and average pore sizes of formed virgin PE/PA TFC NF membranes, leading to increased water permeability. The Li + /Mg 2+ separating factor S Li/Mg first increased and then decreased with maximum points at the TPC/PC ratio of 5:1 and Cyclen addition level of 0.02 wt%. Cation absorption, especially Mg(II)-Cyclen interactions in the PA layers under higher Mg 2+ /Li + ratio led to increased surface Zeta potential, decreased average pore diameters μ p, and greatly increased Li + /Mg 2+ separating factor (S Li/Mg ). S Li/Mg value of PEI-TPC/PC 5:1 -Cyclen 0.02 membranes could be increased from 5.0 to 55.47, keeping the water permeability around 6.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 when Mg 2+ /Li + ratio increased from 1 to 100 in the brine.

Electrochemical precipitation is a promising technique for hardness abatement without the addition of external ions. However, the scale layer on cathode deteriorated the removal efficiency and limited the practical application. Herein, a fenced cathode structure was designed to prevent cathodic precipitation. The cathode was fenced by a crystallization-inducing material for separating the OH − production and crystallization processes. Precipitation on the cathode was confirmed to shift to the crystallization-inducing material, and the clean fenced cathode provided efficient long-term OH − production. At a current density of 40 A/m 2 , the Ca 2+ or Mg 2+ removal efficiency increased by 12.8% or 46.1%, respectively, compared to those of a traditional cathode. Thermodynamic equilibrium in synthetic water and mine water, mass transfer and the location of precipitation were analyzed to elucidate the electrochemical precipitation process. The enhanced mechanism was ascribed to the crystallization-inducing material, which remarkably promoted the crystallization process, and hindered OH − migration, thereby increased the pH of alkaline microenvironment. Notably, a recovery design was proposed to recover pure calcite and brucite from alkalinity-free wastewater. The design reveals a promising strategy for enhancing the crystallization process and reducing cathodic scale, also initiating a new research direction toward hardness removal.

The bioavailability and toxicity of zinc to aquatic life depend on dissolved organic matter (DOM), such as Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA), which plays an important role in the speciation of zinc. This study examined reactions of SRFA with zinc at different concentrations from pH 3.0 to 9.0, and competitive binding of calcium/magnesium and zinc to SRFA at pH 6.0, using in situ absorbance. Interactions of Zn 2+ with SRFA chromophores were evidenced by the emergence of features in Zn-differential spectra. Among all Zn 2+ –SRFA systems, dominant peaks, located at 235, 275 and 385 nm, and the highest intensity at 235 nm indicated the replacement of protons by the bound Zn 2+ . The Zn 2+ binding with SRFA could be quantified by calculating the changes of the slopes of Zn-differential log-transformed absorbance in the wavelength range of 350–400 nm (denoted as DS 350–400 ) and by comparing the experimental data with predictions using the Non-Ideal Competitive Adsorption (NICA–Donnan) model. DS 350–400 was correlated well with the bound Zn 2+ concentrations predicted by NICA–Donnan model with or without Ca 2+ or Mg 2+ . Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ only affect intensity of the Zn-differential and Zn-differential log-transformed absorbance, not shape. In situ absorbance can be used to gain further information about Me n+ –DOM interactions in the presence of various metals.

The effective capture, release and reanalysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are of great significance to acquire tumor information and promote the progress of tumor therapy. Particularly, the selective release of multiple types of CTCs is critical to further study; however, it is still a great challenge. To meet this challenge, we designed a smart DNAzyme probe-based platform. By combining multiple targeting aptamers and multiple metal ion responsive DNAzymes, efficient capture and selective release of multiple types CTCs were realized. Sgc8c aptamer integrated Cu2+-dependent DNAzyme and TD05 aptamer integrated Mg2+-dependent DNAzyme can capture CCRF-CEM cells and Ramos cells respectively on the substrate. With the addition of Cu2+ or Mg2+, CCRF-CEM cells or Ramos cells will be released from the substrate with specific selectivity. Furthermore, our platform has been successfully demonstrated in the whole blood sample. Therefore, our capture/release platform will benefit research on the molecular analysis of CTCs after release and has great potential for cancer diagnosis and individualized treatment.

Industrial wastewater contamination by heavy metal ions such as Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ poses severe threats to the ecosystems and human health, with traditional adsorbents limited by high costs, low adsorption capacities, poor mechanical stability, and slow kinetics. To address these problems and to improve adsorption performance, this study developed a novel hydrogel composite composed of Gellan gum, Ti 3 C 2 MXene, Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): sulfonate (PEDOT-S:H), and aluminum oxide silicate, named GMPA. The GMPA composite, optimized at a mass ratio of 20:2.25:4:2.5, was characterized and exhibited enhanced mechanical properties, improved thermal stability, and a high density of active binding sites. Under optimal conditions (1.2 g/L adsorbent dose, pH levels of 5.9–9.5, and adsorption duration of 30–300 min), the composite removed Zn 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Mg 2+ from a 50 mg/L metal ion solution with removal efficiencies of 99%, 77.1%, and 80% respectively, with capacities of 42.81 mg/g for Zn 2+ , 26.32 mg/g for Cu 2+ , and 21.51 mg/g for Mg 2+ . Kinetics followed the pseudo-first and second order models, indicating chemisorption and physisorption-influenced mechanisms. This novel hydrogel enables applications in water purification and the removal of heavy metals from aqueous environments.

Electrically Switched Ion Exchange (ESIX) technology boasts advantages of high selectivity, low energy consumption, and environmental friendliness, and its core material, LiMn 2 O 4 , can efficiently separate lithium through unique lattice sieving and charge matching effect, yet it suffers from severe performance degradation in brine environments with ultra-high Mg/Li ratio. Currently, the microscopic mechanism responsible for this degradation remains unclear. In this study, we propose a “confined-capture-induced blocking” mechanism using experimental investigations, characterization techniques, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Specifically, the strong Coulomb interaction between high-charge-density Mg 2+ and the O atoms at the entrances of the [111] channels (the Li + migration channels) of LiMn 2 O 4 results in blockage of the channel entrances, thereby blocking the intercalation of Li + . Based on this mechanism, we propose a targeted solution: adopting a dynamic adsorption mode with solution flow. This approach effectively mitigates the adverse effects of Li + concentration polarization and Mg 2+ enrichment near the electrode, which lead to an abnormally high Mg/Li ratio in static adsorption, thereby enhancing the adsorption capacity from 1.437 mg/g in static adsorption to 5.124 mg/g at a flow rate of 2 l/min. Subsequently, pilot-scale experiments further validate the effectiveness of this strategy. This research provides theoretical support, engineering evidence, and practical guidance for the development of lithium extraction technology from salt lakes with ultra-high Mg/Li ratio.

3.25 mg g −1 capacity at ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 474.6 and excellent cycling use. • AlLi-LDHs were confined in SBA-15 pores via solvent evaporation-induced strategy. • Si-O-Al/Li interface increases electron density, boosting electrostatic adsorption. • Hydration-shell sieving effect excludes Mg 2+ , Na + , K + for selective Li + adsorption. The sustainable extraction of lithium from salt lake brines featuring high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios poses a severe technical bottleneck that limits the high-efficiency utilization of global lithium resources. Herein, a novel pore-confined AlLi-LDHs/SBA-15 adsorbent (SEI-AL/SBA-15-B) is rationally constructed via a solvent evaporation-induced method to break this limitation, which directs the exclusive and uniform growth of AlLi-LDH nanosheets inside the ordered mesochannels of SBA-15 rather than on the external surface. This architecture delivers three synergistic effects: (i) physical confinement suppresses nanosheet agglomeration, maximizing accessible active sites; (ii) interfacial Si-O-Al/Li covalent bonds reconstruct the local electronic structure, lowering the DFT-calculated adsorption energy of Li + (H 2 O) 4 from −1.61 eV (pristine AlLi-LDHs) to −3.06 eV; and (iii) a hydration-shell sieving effect, governed by the interplay of geometric radius and dehydration energy, efficiently excludes competing Mg 2+ , Na + and K + . The optimized adsorbent achieves a Li + uptake of 10.52 mg g −1 within 1 h in 800 mg/L LiCl solution (equilibrium capacity 12.11 mg g −1 at 4 h). Impressively, a capacity of 3.25 mg g −1 is preserved at an ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio (474.6), which surpasses most reported AlLi-LDHs adsorbents. Normalization to the active LDH mass shows that SEI-AL/SBA-15-B exhibits a 2.85-fold higher capacity than pristine AlLi-LDHs, proving that the enhanced performance originates from improved active-site utilization rather than higher LDH loading. The adsorbent also demonstrates excellent stability over eight adsorption–desorption cycles. This work establishes mesopore confinement engineering as a powerful platform to overcome the inherent limitations of layered double hydroxide adsorbents, enabling sustainable lithium extraction from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio salt lake brines. AlLi-LDHs were confined within SBA-15 mesopores by solvent evaporation-induced method to form SEI-AL/SBA-15 composite adsorbent. The mesoporous confinement effect suppresses the agglomeration of AlLi-LDHs, reconstructs the Si-O-Al/Li interfacial electronic structure to enhance electrostatic adsorption and coordination bonding capability, and reinforces size sieving by blocking large-sized competing hydrated ions. These synergistic effects enable SEI-AL/SBA-15-B high lithium adsorption capacity and ultrahigh selectivity in brine. Download: Download high-res image (140KB) Download: Download full-size image

Magnesium (Mg 2+ ) is crucial for various biological processes, making real-time Mg 2+ monitoring essential for health. Traditional organic fluorescent sensors face challenges such as complex synthesis and poor water solubility, limiting their application. In contrast, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) offer a promising alternative due to their simple synthesis, stability, and biocompatibility. This study presents water-soluble N-CDs synthesized via a hydrothermal method, which show high selectivity for Mg 2+ detection through a chelation-conjugation enhancement (CCE) effect. The nitrogen doping also enhances photosensitivity, enabling the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for photodynamic therapy. Notably, Mg 2+ -chelated N-CDs exhibit superior photodynamic antibacterial activity. Theoretical and experimental analyses reveal that the CCE significantly improves electron transfer, leading to enhanced photosensitizing properties. This work offers a novel and efficient strategy for dual-functional Mg 2+ detection and photodynamic therapy.
