Degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater is crucial for global environmental health. Semiconductor-based photocatalytic technologies have received widespread attention due to their ability to directly utilize solar energy, produce no secondary pollution, and offer long-lasting functionality. However, current photocatalyst preparation technologies face issues such as complex manufacturing processes, low efficiency, and the need for various additives. Therefore, this work proposes a simple and eco-friendly method to in-situ growth of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) onto magnesium oxide (MgO), forming a MgO@rGO core-shell structured photocatalyst through CO 2 thermal reaction process. After systematic study, the incorporation of rGO onto MgO core greatly extends the light absorption range from ultraviolet (UV) to visible wavelength, enabling substantially enhanced light capture and photoexcited carriers. Additionally, the core-shell heterojunction with a built-in electric field at the interface between MgO and rGO facilitates distinctly the separation and migration of the photogenerated charges. This structure-induced synergistic effect boosts the photocatalytic performance of MgO@rGO by a factor of 1.7, 4.1, 41.8, and 6.4, compared with MgO (stripped), MgO (pure), rGO, and commercially used TiO 2 , respectively. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for designing advanced functional nanocomposites to address environmental problems.

Taking advantage of the environmentally-friendly properties of a magnesium salt leaching agent, magnesium oxide (MgO) was used as a precipitant to enrich rare earth (RE) from leaching liquor in the magnesium salt system. This approach not only tackles the issue of ammonia–nitrogen pollution but also enables efficient magnesium recycling. However, due to the high concentration of magnesium ions and the low concentration of RE ions in the leaching solution, the precipitation kinetics of RE concentrates are sluggish, leading to low RE purity in the resulting precipitated product. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy that combines complexation-ultrafiltration (UF) pre-concentration with subsequent MgO precipitation to enhance the hydrolysis of MgO, promoting the precipitation of RE. We further improved the RE enrichment efficiency by optimizing membrane type, complexing agent selection, concentration levels, precipitation temperature, and MgO dosage. Under the conditions of concentrating the leaching solution using optimal UF membrane and employing glyphosate as the complexing agent, the RE ions concentration increased from 101 to 3940 mg/L, and we successfully separated magnesium ions with a separation factor of 36.4. A comparison between direct MgO precipitation and the pre-concentration approach revealed an 80 % reduction in precipitation time and an 80 % decrease in MgO usage with pre-concentration. Furthermore, this combined process led to an 8 % increase in RE recovery and a 2.8-fold enhancement in RE purity, and similar results were obtained when using actual mine leaching solutions. Additionally, the glyphosate present in the UF permeate and the precipitated mother liquor can be efficiently reclaimed through resin adsorption. This proposed process holds significant potential for engineering applications aimed at enriching RE.

Continuous Mg 2+ accumulation during hydrochloric acid leaching of nickel laterite ore causes magnesium loss and increases the burden of saline wastewater treatment. In this study, magnesium was recovered from Mg-rich leachate as reactive MgO by precipitation using milk of lime followed by calcination. Simulated MgCl 2 -rich solutions revealed the concentration-dependent precipitation behavior. At low Mg 2+ concentrations, Mg(OH) 2 formed mainly through direct precipitation and produced dense lamellar precursors. At Mg 2+ concentrations of 30 g/L and above, CaMg 2 Cl 6 ·12 H 2 O was detected as a transient chloride-containing double salt during the early precipitation stage, and honeycomb-like porous Mg(OH) 2 precursors were obtained after washing. Calcination of the precursor produced MgO with improved citric acid activity (CAA). The optimized process was validated using purified Mg-rich leachate, achieving a stoichiometry-based Mg precipitation efficiency of 95.47% and producing MgO with approximately 98 wt% purity. The synthesized MgO showed CAA of 22.52 ± 1.19 s, a specific surface area of 60.75 m 2 /g, and Fe removal performance comparable to commercial MgO, supporting its potential internal reuse as a pH adjustment reagent in hydrochloric acid leaching processes.

Developing bone scaffolds with biomimetic architecture and bioactive signaling is essential for effective orthopedic repair. In this study, 16.6 wt% MgO incorporated hydroxyapatite (MgO/HA) scaffolds with a Gyroid Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) architecture were fabricated using a multi-stage route combining Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printing and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The resulting scaffolds maintained ∼60% porosity and exhibited an increase in compressive strength (7.27 MPa) compared to HA (4.24 MPa). The incorporation of MgO led to an increase in the degradation rate, facilitating the sustained release of bioactive Mg²⁺ ions. In vitro biological evaluations demonstrated a potent multi-lineage cellular response: the scaffolds enhanced rat mesenchymal stem cell (rMSC) proliferation and upregulated key osteogenic markers (RUNX2, ALP, and OCN), while simultaneously stimulating human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by significantly upregulating angiogenic gene expressions (VEGF and Ang-1). These results indicate that the combination of MgO doping and TPMS architecture successfully establishes a robust osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling effect alongside optimized mechanical performance, providing a highly promising candidate platform for patient-specific bone tissue engineering.

Pyrochlore-type zirconates, particularly lanthanum zirconate (La 2 Zr 2 O 7 , LZO) is a promising candidate for microwave applications, yet processing challenges remain. In this study, LZO- x MgO ( x = 0–8 wt%) composite ceramics were successfully synthesized via Digital Light Processing (DLP) vat photopolymerization. Rheological analysis revealed that MgO functions as an effective solid dispersant, reducing slurry viscosity from 3500 to 850 mPa·s while improving photocuring through refractive-index matching. Characterization results indicate that a certain amount of MgO (2–4 wt%) effectively inhibits abnormal grain growth through a grain-boundary pinning mechanism, leading to a homogenized microstructure. Mechanical performance was notably enhanced, the 4 wt% MgO sample exhibited a peak flexural strength of 303.5 MPa. Crucially, the microwave dielectric properties improved substantially: the product of quality factor and resonant frequency ( Q × f , where Q = 1/tan δ and tan δ is the dielectric loss) increased from 3000 to 11,000 GHz. Additionally, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency ( τ f ) was effectively tuned from –31 to approximately –10 ppm/°C. However, excessive MgO (8 wt%) leads to phase agglomeration and the reappearance of abnormal grains, which degrades the overall performance. Overall, 2–4 wt% MgO achieves an optimal balance of processability, strength, and dielectric performance.

Fenton-like oxidation is a widely used advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of persistent organic compounds. However, its development is significantly constrained by low H 2 O 2 utilization, the loss of transition metal ions, and the presence of harsh acidic conditions. Herein, a catalyst composed of MgO supported on porous P-doped graphitic C 3 N 4 (P-CN) was fabricated using a straightforward stepwise calcination process. The catalyst exhibited excellent performance in catalyzing the degradation of tetracycline (TC) through activated H 2 O 2 in the dark. The maximum reaction rate constant of the synthesized catalyst for TC degradation was 0.034 min −1 , which was nearly 62 times that of MgO and 18 times that of CN. The enhancement of catalytic properties was attributed to the doping of g-C 3 N 4 by P and the N-Mg bonds formed between g-C 3 N 4 and MgO, which not only enhanced charge transfer capabilities but also promoted the conversion of H 2 O 2 into 1 O 2 , •OH, and •O 2 − , thereby benefiting the degradation of pollutants. The effects of various parameters, including catalyst dosage, pH level, common interfering substances, and H 2 O 2 and TC concentrations, on degradation efficiency were examined in detail, and the ecological risk associated with the catalytic degradation of TC was predicted. In addition, the MgO/P-CN catalyst exhibited high stability, low H 2 O 2 consumption, and a broad pH range, had no transition metal components, and did not require an external energy input, demonstrating potential for the removal of organic pollutants and toxic waste.

Integrated brine valorization produced high-purity MgO nano • 98.4% Mg was recovered by selective precipitation. • MgO reached 1291.7 mg PO₄ 3− g −1 phosphate capacity. • 98.98% phosphate removal was achieved in real wastewater. • A circular desalination–resource recovery process was demonstrated. This study presents an integrated resource recovery strategy that converts magnesium-rich brine from hydrate-based desalination into high-performance MgO nanoparticles for phosphate removal from wastewater. Magnesium was recovered from concentrated brine by pH-controlled precipitation, followed by purification and conversion into MgO nanoparticles via an oxalate-assisted sol–gel process and calcination. The synthesized material was characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM – EDS, BET, DLS, and pH pzc analyses, and its phosphate adsorption performance was evaluated under different operating conditions using kinetic, equilibrium, and mechanistic analyses. After five enrichment cycles, the brine contained 6734 ± 36 mg L −1 Mg 2+ , and 98.4% of the magnesium was recovered at pH 10.5. The recovered precursor was converted into cubic periclase MgO with a conversion efficiency of 98.1% and a purity of 98.8%. The MgO nanoparticles exhibited a flake-like morphology, an average particle size of 27.4 nm, and a specific surface area of 128.13 m 2 g −1 . Phosphate adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 1291.7 mg PO 4 3− g −1 (approximately 422 mg P g −1 ). The removal mechanism involved electrostatic attraction, inner-sphere Mg–O–P complexation, and magnesium phosphate precipitation. Application to real livestock wastewater containing 94.8 ± 0.3 mg PO 4 3− L −1 achieved in a phosphate removal efficiency of 98.98% ± 0.10%. These findings demonstrate a sustainable pathway for simultaneously valorizing desalination brine and removing phosphorus from wastewater, providing an integrated circular water treatment approach that supports resource recovery and environmental protection. Porous hydroxyapatite(HA)-based scaffolds have demonstrated limited clinical effectiveness in bone defect repair, primarily due to the functional mismatch between biodegradation and osteoconduction. Integrating therapeutic metal oxide nanoparticles into bioscaffolds is a widely recognized and effective strategy to address this challenge. In this study, series of nano-MgO/HA composite scaffolds were fabricated by combining a space-holder strategy with spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology under pressure less. The composition, structural characteristics, in vitro long-term biodegradability, bioactivity, biocompatibility and their interactions were systematically investigated. The results revealed that composite scaffolds primarily consisted of HA and MgO phases. Furthermore, due to the inhibitory effect of nano-MgO, the grains within the composite scaffold remain nanocrystalline, with sizes <100 nm. Upon the addition of nano-MgO, the pore characteristics were enhanced, with overall porosity ranging from approximately 49% to 56% and average pore sizes between 246 μm and 318 μm. Biodegradation tests conducted in Tris-HCl buffer solution demonstrated that the degradation rate of composite scaffolds increased to 32.79% in 12 weeks, compared to 4.14% for HA scaffold. Furthermore, in simulated body fluid (SBF), composite scaffolds exhibited a dramatically improved capacity for osteoapatite formation, with the weight gain rate increasing from 1.5% for HA scaffold to 11.46%. Fundamentally, these stem from the preferential dissolution of nano-MgO, which shifts the scaffold's degradation behavior from surface corrosion to pitting corrosion, thereby expanding the solid-liquid interface. Furthermore, the internal acicular nanocrystals within it accelerate the degradation and deposition process while providing additional nucleation sites for osteapatite formation. These findings suggest that when the nano-MgO content was 16.6 wt.%, the scaffolds (10MH) exhibited suitable pore characteristics, excellent biodegradability and bioactivity and good biocompatibility. In summary, hydroxyapatite composite scaffolds adding bioabsorbable nano-MgO represent highly promising biomaterials for bone regeneration.

With the rapid advancement of short-process steelmaking technology and the demand for low-carbon emissions, electric arc furnace (EAF) has increasingly become a critical pathway in global steel production. This study systematically investigates the structure–property relationships and compositional regulation mechanisms of CaO–SiO 2 –FeO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 slag, focusing on the effects of high FeO content between 21 and 30 wt pct on viscosity, density, and microstructure. The viscosity and density of the homogeneous slags in the range between 1773 K and 1873 K were measured using the rotating cylinder and Archimedes methods, respectively. The short-range structural characteristics of slag systems with different FeO contents were analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that as the FeO content increases, the liquidus temperature, viscosity, viscous flow activation energy, and the molar volume decrease accordingly, while the density increases. FeO promotes depolymerization of the aluminosilicate network, leading to an increase in the proportion of non-bridging oxygen and free oxygen and a decrease in bridging oxygen content. The results obtain the correlations between FeO content, network depolymerization, and changes in flow properties, providing a theoretical basis for slag composition optimization and foaming slag control in EAF operations.

A highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) approach was established for the detection of monosultap using the nanosubstrate of β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs which was MgO-protected silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) assembled tryptophan (Trp) and β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD). Six nanosubstrates including AgNPs, MgO/AgNPs, Trp/AgNPs, β -CD/MgO/AgNPs, Trp/MgO/AgNPs and β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs were compared for their enhancement effect on monosultap. Among them, β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs had the greatest enhancement effect, with an enhancement factor (EF) reaching up to 1.95 × 10 6 . The nanosubstrate of β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs was characterized by various instrumental techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The binding of β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs with monosultap was studied in detail. The optimum experimental conditions were confirmed through single-factor experiments and response surface analysis. The interferences from the coexisting substances (common metal ions, glucose and congeneric drugs) were investigated to evaluate the method selectivity. Under the optimal conditions, the standard curve equation of monosultap was established within the concentration range of 2.00 × 10 −8 –1.00 × 10 −6 mol L −1 , with detection limit (LOD) of 0.970 nmol L −1 (3 σ / S ). The SERS approach was utilized for detecting monosultap in several vegetables and fruits with the recoveries from 96.3 % to 105 %.

The aim of our research reported in this paper was to develop electrospun (Sc2O3-MgO)/alizarin/polycaprolactone/polyvinylpyrrolidone nanofiber membranes with pH-responsive and antibacterial properties. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that alizarin (ALI) was uniformly distributed in the polycaprolactone/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PCL/PVP) matrix, forming pH-responsive membranes. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD), attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermal analysis results demonstrated that both ALI and Sc2O3-MgO loadings were effective. Moreover, the addition of 0.16 wt% ALI induced distinct color changes (from pale yellow to purple, pH = 2-12) in the ALI/PCL/PVP nanofiber membranes. This behavior stemmed from the hydroxyl group in ALI forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the carbonyl oxygen, enabling proton transfer. Furthermore, the ALI/PCL/PVP membranes containing 2.00 wt% Sc2O3-MgO showed good antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli (E. coli) within 24 h, of what indicating its strong antibacterial activity. In addition, a comprehensive 8-day analysis was conducted on the pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and total number of live bacteria colonies of the shrimp, as well as the color changes in the film. The experiment proved that the shrimp not covered by the film became highly spoiled on the 4th day, while the shrimp covered with the SAPP-2-3 nanofiber membranes only reached a state of high spoilage on the 6th day. Therefore, the SAPP-2-3 nanofiber membranes can effectively extend the shelf life of the shrimp by 2 days. We believe this study provides a new strategy for the research of multifunctional smart food packaging films.

This study investigated the effect of laser texturing parameters on the shear strength and microstructure of SiC ceramic joints, which were joined using CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-Y 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CAMYS) glass filler. It was demonstrated that laser texturing promotes the formation of SiO 2 on the surface and subsequent filler adhesion. Groove depth and spacing were identified as critical factors for joint performance. Excessive groove depth (∼60 μm) caused incomplete groove filling and reduced joint strength, due to void formation. Similarly, decreased texturing spacing (∼200 μm) induced excessive thermal damage and compromised joint robustness, as observed in laser-treated ceramic surfaces. Among the five evaluated texturing configurations, the optimal condition, defined by a groove depth of ∼30 μm and spacing of ∼500 μm, yielded a maximum shear strength of 80 ± 12 MPa, representing a 77.8 % improvement over untextured joints (45 ± 10 MPa).
