Control of green emitting intermediate phases in (Ba, Sr)3MgSi2O8:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphors for dual-bands or tri-bands emission

Zhiyong Mao,Jingjing Chen,Liang Sun,Qifei Lu,Dajian Wang

(Ba,Sr) 3 MgSi 2 O 8 :Eu 2+ , Mn 2+ phosphors with 430/505/660   nm tri-bands or 430/660   nm dual-bands emission were demonstrated in this work by controlling the appearence or not of green emitting intermediate phases, (Ba,Sr) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ . Through varying the stoichiometric amount of SiO 2 in precursor, the coexistence of green emitting intermediate phase tended to be sensitive and diversified. Laser Microzone Raman spectrum was employed to look insight into the lattice stretch and the preferential occupation sites of Ba 2+ ions in Sr 3 MgSi 2 O 8 lattices. The local structure and the crystal field of Eu 2+ luminescent centers were found to be disturbed by distorted arrangement of cross-linked [MgO 6 ] octahedra and [SiO 4 ] tetrahedra. This mechanism approach provided some new insights to further understanding the adjustment strategy of green emitting intermediate phases in (Ba,Sr) 3 MgSi 2 O 8 :Eu 2+ , Mn 2+ phosphor potentially applied as red/blue dual-bands emitting or red/green/blue tri-bands emitting materials.

Energy Transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+/Dy3+/Mn2+ in Ca9Ga(PO4)7 Phosphors: Synthesis, Structure and Tunable Multicolor Luminescent Properties

Xiaojiao Kang,Wei Lü,Hongcheng Wang,Dongxiong Ling

A series of Ca 9 Ga(PO 4 ) 7 :Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ phosphors with tunable color, in which Ce 3+ acts as the sensitizer, was synthesized. Energy transfer (ET) from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ was investigated in detail. Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ single-doped Ca 9 Ga(PO 4 ) 7 can exhibit green, yellow, and red emission, respectively. Incorporating Ce 3+ into a Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ single-doped Ca 9 Ga(PO 4 ) 7 phosphor can remarkably promote the luminous efficiency of the Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ ions. This enhancement originates from an efficient ET from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ . The ET was validated by luminescence spectra, decay dynamics, and schematic energy levels. Moreover, the intensity ratio of red emission of Mn 2+ to violet emission of Ce 3+ was analyzed based on energy-transfer and lifetime measurements. In Ce 3+ -Tb 3+ , Ce 3+ -Dy 3+ , and Ce 3+ -Mn 2+ doped Ca 9 Ga(PO 4 ) 7 , the emitting color changed from violet to green, yellow, and red, respectively, which indicates the potential use of this new tunable phosphor in UV light-emitting diodes. Graphical Energy transfer from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ in Ca 9 Ga(PO 4 ) 7 is investigated as a function of the Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Dy 3+ /Mn 2+ concentration and based on the photoluminescence emission/excitation spectra and decay curves. Through dual energy transfer, the emitting colors can change to green, yellow, and red from the initial blue color. The results suggest that the material is suitable for UV-white LEDs.

Synthesis of high-efficient Mn2+ doped CsPbCl3 perovskite nanocrystals in toluene and surprised lattice ejection of dopants at mild temperature

Kun Bai,Ruosheng Zeng,Bao Ke,Sheng Cao,Xiaogang Xue,Rihui Tan,Bingsuo Zou

Doping has been established as a powerful approach for endowing novel properties to perovskite nanocrystals (NCs).However, the fast formation of perovskites makes the fundamental understanding of doping processes in these NCs very rare. In the present work, a mild temperature (<100 °C) approach to produce Mn 2+ doped CsPbCl 3 (Mn:CsPbCl 3 ) perovskite NCs in toluene is reported. The effects of the introduced Mn/Pb ratios in the raw materials as well as the temperature on the structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties of Mn:CsPbCl 3 NCs were investigated systematically. The as-synthesized Mn:CsPbCl 3 NCs shown a strong Mn 2+ emission at 594 nm with a PL quantum yield (QY) of 52%, and the doping concentrations can be easily tailored from 1.8 atom % to 13.3 atom % by changed the Mn/Pb feed ratios. The study revealed that the reaction temperature plays a key role in Mn:CsPbCl 3 NCs. Through elemental and microstructure characterization , it was surprisingly found that lattice ejection of Mn ions occurred at 100 °C. This result greatly enhances the understanding of the “basic process” of Mn 2+ doping in CsPbCl 3 NCs, which provides some insights into the preparation of metal ion doped perovskite NCs.

A ratiometric fluorescent probe based on molecularly imprinted carbon dots for specific detection and quantification of Mn2+ in living cells

Yarong Zhang,Jing Ma,Xingru He,Wenyan Li,Yuhan Zhang,Miao Li,Lingbo Sun,Yuecheng Zhang,Hongyan Ma

Manganese (Mn), an essential trace element in the human body, can independently activate the cGAS-STING pathway, thereby significantly enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of immunotherapy. However, precise quantification of Mn 2+ in living cells remains technically challenging, hindering mechanistic studies of Mn-mediated cGAS-STING pathway activation. To address this limitation, a novel Mn 2+ -specific fluorescent probe, Mn 2+ -CDs-MIPs, was developed by integrating molecular imprinting techniques with carbon dots (CDs). Upon excitation at 290 nm, two distinct emission peaks were observed at 365 nm and 520 nm. In the presence of Mn 2+ , the emission intensity at 365 nm was significantly enhanced, while the peak at 520 nm remained constant. By using the signals at 365 nm and 520 nm as responsive and reference signals, respectively, a novel ratiometric sensor for Mn 2+ quantification was developed. Under optimal conditions, a strong linear correlation between Mn 2+ concentration and the ΔF 365 /F 520 ratio was observed over the range of 0.8–80 μM, with a detection limit as low as 0.3 μM. Leveraging the precisely tailored cavities and Mn 2+ -induced modulation of fluorescence properties, this method exhibits high specificity and salinity tolerance, facilitating its application in Mn 2+ quantification within complex biological systems and living cells.

Synergistic Energy Transfer and Electron-Capture Competition for Giant Enhancement of Red Persistent Luminescence in LiYGeO4:Mn2+ via Bi3+ Doping

Ying Lv,Chaofeng Li,Ning Zhao,Rujun Yang,Jiang Zhu,Yu Liu,Chunlai Huang,Shihai You,Jumpei Ueda

Exploring efficient strategies to enhance persistent luminescence (PersL) is highly demanded to facilitate advanced applications of inorganic PersL phosphors. In this work, a remarkable enhancement of Mn 2+ PersL in LiYGeO 4 (LYGO) with tunable wavelengths is achieved through Bi 3+ codoping. The Mn 2+ emission can be tuned from 600 to 664 nm by increasing the doping concentration, attributed to site-selective occupation of different crystallographic sites. The pronounced enhancement in the PersL of Mn 2+ is achieved through the synergistic interplay of energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Mn 2+ and electron-capture competition between the two hole-trapped ions. Specifically, the PersL intensity of LYGO:0.5%Mn 2+ ,0.125%Bi 3+ at 30 s increased by 444 times compared to that of LYGO:0.5%Mn 2+ after 254 nm excitation. Thermoluminescence measurement reveals that introduction of Bi 3+ creates an additional trap center with depth of 0.60 eV. Moreover, LYGO:Mn 2+ ,Bi 3+ exhibits excellent water resistance and shows great potential for applications in information storage and X-ray detection. This work not only demonstrates an intense red PersL phosphor, but also provides an efficient strategy to enhance PersL in inorganic materials via energy transfer and electron-capture competition.

Energy transfer properties of a single-phase Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor with excellent thermal stability for w-LEDs

Meiling Xie,Meihua Wu,Minghao Fang,Zhaohui Huang,Yan'gai Liu,Xiaowen Wu,Xin Min

A high temperature solid state method was used to prepare Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphors with good thermal stability. The phosphor shows a broadband excitation region of 250–430 nm, which can be matched with the emissions of ultraviolet (UV)/near-ultraviolet (NUV) LED chips for white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs). The energy transfer efficiency is 74.46% from the sensitizer Eu2+ ions to the activator Mn2+ ions, which enhances the intensities of the Na3Gd(PO4)2-based phosphor. In addition, by increasing the Mn2+ doping level in the phosphor, the Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor first shows blue light, then turns to white light, and finally emits red light under 365 nm excitation. Besides, the temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements indicate that the prepared phosphors exhibit good thermal stability. W-LEDs fabricated by combining a 365 nm chip with the Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor exhibit bright white light, which has a high color rendering index (CRI) = 91.5, and a relatively low correlated color temperature (CCT) = 5198 K. Moreover, the CIE point is calculated to be at (0.3337, 0.3465), which is located in the white light region. These results indicate that the as-prepared phosphors can be considered as potential candidates for UV/NUV light-excited w-LED applications.

Pressure-Induced Remarkable Spectral Red-Shift in Mn2+-Activated NaY9(SiO4)6O2 Red-Emitting Phosphors for High-Sensitive Optical Manometry

Qifeng Zeng,Marcin Runowski,Junpeng Xue,Laihui Luo,Lukasz Marciniak,Víctor Lavín,Peng Du

To settle the low sensitivity of luminescent manometers, the Mn 2+ -activated NaY 9 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 red-emitting phosphors with splendid pressure sensing performances are developed. Excited by 408 nm, the resulting products emit bright red emission originating from 4 T 1 ( 4 G) → 6 A 1 transition of Mn 2+ , in which the optimal concentration of the activator ion is ≈1 mol%. Moreover, the admirable thermal stability of the developed phosphors is studied and confirmed by the temperature-dependent emission spectra, based on which the activation energy is derived to be 0.275 eV. By analyzing the pressure-dependent Raman spectra, the structural stability of the synthesized compounds at extreme conditions is verified. Furthermore, the designed phosphors exhibit remarkable spectral red-shift at elevated pressure. Especially, as pressure increases from 0.75 to 7.16 GPa, the emission band centroid shifts from 617.2 to 663.4 nm, resulting in a high sensitivity (d λ /d P ) of 7.00 nm GPa −1 , whereas the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increases from 83.0 to 110.6 nm, leading to the ultra-high sensitivity (dFWHM/d P ) of 10.13 nm GPa −1 . These achievements manifest that the designed red-emitting phosphors are appropriate for ultrasensitive optical manometry. More importantly, the developed manometer is a current global leader in sensitivity, when operating in the band-width mode, that is, FWHM.

Modulating the afterglow time of Mn2+ doped double perovskites by size tuning and its applications in dynamic information display

Peng Wang,Ying Wang,Wei Guan,Hongzhou Dong,Lina Sui,Zhixing Gan,Zhixing Gan,Lifeng Dong,Lifeng Dong,Liyan Yu,Liyan Yu

Mn2+ doped lead-free double perovskites are emerging afterglow materials that can avoid the usage of rare earth ions. However, the regulation of the afterglow time is still a challenge. In this work, the Mn doped Cs2Na0.2Ag0.8InCl6 crystals with afterglow emission at about 600 nm are synthesized by a solvothermal method. Then, the Mn2+ doped double perovskite crystals are crushed into different sizes. As the size decreases from 1.7 mm to 0.075 mm, the afterglow time decreases from 2070 s to 196 s. Steady-state photoluminescence (PL) spectra, time resolved PL, thermoluminescence (TL) reveal the afterglow time monotonously decreases due to the enhanced nonradiative surface trapping. The modulation on afterglow time will greatly promote their applications in various fields, such as bioimaging, sensing, encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. As a proof of concept, dynamic display of information is realized based on different afterglow times.

Manipulation of Bi3+/In3+ Transmutation and Mn2+-Doping Effect on the Structure and Optical Properties of Double Perovskite Cs2NaBi1-xInxCl6

Jun Zhou,Ximing Rong,Peng Zhang,Maxim S. Molokeev,Peijia Wei,Quanlin Liu,Xiuwen Zhang,Zhiguo Xia

The halide double perovskite family represented by A 2 (B + ,B 3+ )X 6 can overcome the lead toxicity and enable generally large band gap engineering via B/B sites' transmutation or exotic dopants to fulfill the emerging applications in the optoelectronic fields. Herein, the design and the experimental synthesis of a new family of Mn 2+ -doped Cs 2 NaBi 1- x In x Cl 6 crystals with an intense orange-yellow emission band are reported, and the phase formation stability is discussed via a combined experimental–theoretical approach. Depending on the manipulation of Bi 3+ /In 3+ combination, the band gap increases with In 3+ content, and a subsequent evolution from indirect to direct band gap is verified. First-principles calculations and parity analyses indicate a parity forbidden effect on Cs 2 NaInCl 6 , and a combination effect of absorption on Cs 2 NaBi 1- x In x Cl 6 from both Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 and Cs 2 NaInCl 6 . The associated Mn 2+ -doped photoluminescence depending on the Bi 3+ /In 3+ substitution is also addressed from the variation of the different Mn–Cl environment and neighboring-cation effect.

Confining Mn2+-Doped Lead Halide Perovskite in Zeolite-Y as Ultrastable Orange-Red Phosphor Composites for White Light-Emitting Diodes

Shi Ye,Jia-Yi Sun,Yu-Hong Han,Ya-Yun Zhou,Qin-Yuan Zhang

CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as competitive candidate luminescent materials in the photoelectric fields due to their superior luminescence properties. However, the major drawback such as poor resistance to temperature, moisture, and irradiation of light, especially for the red QDs with I–, hinders their practical applications. Herein, we synthesized Mn2+-doped CsPbCl3 embedded in the cage of zeolite-Y as a new orange-red phosphor for the white light-emitting diode (WLED). The composites have significantly improved resistance to both elevated temperature and water over the bare Mn2+-doped QDs. The former exhibits little degradation whereas the latter shows apparent decline upon the irradiation of lights in the orange LED devices, which are fabricated by employing each material as a color-conversion phosphor coated on a 365 nm UV chip. A WLED is also achieved with a 365 nm UV chip coated with a CsPb(Cl0.5,Br0.5)3–Y blue phosphor and a CsPb0.75Mn0.25Cl3–Y orange phosphor. The device possesses a Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage coordinate of (0.34, 0.36), a correlated color temperature of 5336 K and a color rendering index of 81.

Highly selective and sensitive detection of Hg2+ based on fluorescence enhancement of Mn-doped ZnSe QDs by Hg2+-Mn2+ replacement

Zhi-Qiang Zhou,Ren Yan,Jie Zhao,Li-Yun Yang,Ji-Lei Chen,Yan-Jun Hu,Feng-Lei Jiang,Yi Liu

The pollution of Hg 2+ is one of the most serious problems to human health due to their high toxicity, mobility, difficulty in degradation and ability of accumulation in ecological systems. Thus, it is of great importance to develop highly selective and sensitive probe for detecting Hg 2+ in aquatic ecosystems. Here we propose a new turn-on strategy for specific recognition and detection of Hg 2+ . Mn-doped ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) with small size (2.1   nm) were prepared and adopted as probe, the small size of doped QDs makes the replacement of Mn 2+ by Hg 2+ accessible, which eliminates the fluorescence quenching effect of superficial Mn 2+ on Mn-doped ZnSe QDs. Different from traditional semiconductor nanocrystals based turn-off probe for detecting Hg 2+ , we realize a turn-on strategy for the selective detection of Hg 2+ by Hg 2+ -Mn 2+ replacement using semiconductor nanocrystals (Mn-doped ZnSe QDs). This turn-on mechanism was verified by fluorescence spectra, ICP-AES and XPS. In the absence of Hg 2+ , Mn-doped ZnSe QDs possessed low fluorescence intensity. With the addition of Hg 2+ , the fluorescence intensity around 600   nm increased dramatically. Our Mn-doped ZnSe QDs exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Hg 2+ . The limit of detection is 7.0   nM, which is lower than the mercury toxic level defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (10   nM). The result of Hg 2+ detection in real samples indicates the feasibility and sensitivity of our probe for application in environmental samples.

An optical FRET inhibition sensor for serum ferritin based on Mn2+-doped NaYF4:Yb,Tm NIR luminescence up-conversion nanoparticles

ShaoZhen Wang,Jianguo Zhang,Hongqi Chen,Lun Wang

A new serum ferritin (SF) biosensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm up-converting rare-earth nanophosphors (UCNPs, donor) to gold nanorods (GNRs, acceptor) was developed in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The as-prepared Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs exhibited a strong emission at 807   nm in the NIR region and were modified with poly-(acrylic acid) (PAA) before conjugating with anti-SF (Ab 1 ). The negatively charged donor (Ab 1 -UCNPs) and the positively charged acceptor (GNRs) were mixed in close proximity due to electrostatic interactions, which quenched the fluorescence emission of the Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs. However, added SF combines with the anti-SF because the binding affinity between SF and Ab 1 is stronger than the electrostatic interactions. Thus, the acceptor separated from the donor, and the fluorescence was restored. Under optimal conditions, the restored fluorescence exhibited a linear relationship with SF concentrations ranging from 0.23 to 16.88   ng/mL and a limit of detection as low as 0.12   ng/mL. The proposed method was also used to monitor SF in human serum samples.
