A series of ultrafine core@shell electrocatalysts (CoRuOx@NC) are prepared using oleylamine (OA)-passivated metal-oxide nanosheets (CoRuOy@OA) as single precursors. The optimal catalyst Co0.8Ru0.2Ox@NC composed of the N-doped carbon (NC) shell and the endohedral hybrid of metal/metal oxide exhibits excellent catalytic activities in alkaline media with a low overpotential of 36 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction, 278 mV for oxygen evolution reaction, and an ultralow potential of −19 mV for hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) at 10 mA cm–2. When used as both cathode and anode catalysts for overall water splitting, Co0.8Ru0.2Ox@NC drives 10/500 mA cm–2 with a cell voltage as low as 1.55/1.86 V and maintains long-term stability at 500 mA cm–2. Moreover, for HzOR-assisted electrochemical water splitting (EWS), the Co0.8Ru0.2Ox@NC-based electrode couple requires ultralow cell voltages of merely 79/674 mV to deliver 10/100 mA cm–2 with excellent long-term durability at 100 mA cm–2. The success of the present electrocatalyst shall be attributed to the combined effect of minor RuOx incorporation and carbon encapsulation, which results in not only enhanced catalyst conductivity and charge transfer kinetics but also surface-enriched active sites and improved intrinsic catalytic activity. Thus, our work may pave a new opportunity for rational design and facile synthesis of bifunctional electrocatalysts for EWS operated with high current density or low power input.

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) suffer from electrocatalytic activity loss due to particle aggregation. We have proposed a MOF confinement strategy synthesizes CoP-NiP 2 quantum dots (QDs) embedded in N-doped carbon (CoP-NiP 2 QDs/NC), achieving atomic-level dispersion of active species. Electrochemical analyses reveal: 1) hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance surpassing commercial 20% Pt/C above 42 mA·cm -2 with ultralow loading (0.2 mg·cm -2 ); 2) Superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting in alkaline/neutral electrolytes, outperforming commercial RuO 2 and RuO 2 ||Pt/C electrolytic cell. Enhanced charge transfer kinetics supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveal synergistic electronic interactions between CoP and NiP 2 optimizing Gibbs free energy of reactions and water adsorption/dissociation energetics. This work shows a confinement-driven design strategy for multicomponent TMP QDs, bridging synthetic control of compound architectures with their electrocatalytic functionality for efficient hydrogen production.

Transition metal phosphide (TMP) emerges as a promising electrocatalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). However, conventional TMP materials require exogenous metal ions to participate in coordination reactions, which usually suffer from active site blocking, pronounced intrinsic impedance, and inevitable catalyst shedding at high current density. Herein, a novel in-situ construction strategy has been developed to grow N -doped carbon (NC) enwrapped Co/CoP nanosheets directly onto Co foam (abbreviated as CoF) through a three-step transformation of Co to Co(OH) 2 to Co-Metal-Organic Framework (Co-MOF) to Co/CoP/NC. In the entire preparation process, Co metal is only provided by the CoF substrate without external metal sources. Such in-situ construction yields tight contact at the interface of the heterogeneous catalyst, leading to much-reduced impedance and boundary vacancy, while the porous nitrogen-doped carbon backbone further endows the catalyst with the exposure of massive active sites, promotes mass transfer, and possesses high electrical conductivity. The Co/CoP/NC/CoF requires overpotentials of only 64 mV/263 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 414 mV/481 mV@400 mA cm −2 for both HER/OER in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. Remarkably, it reveals excellent OWS catalytic activity with a cell voltage of 1.56 V@10 mA cm −2 and 1.88 V@200 mA cm −2 . This strategy of in-situ interface engineering transformation provides new ideas for direct device processing and construction of highly-efficient transition-metal-based OWS electrode materials.

Nonprecious metal oxygen reduction
reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts
have garnered increasing attention owing to their extremely low cost
compared with Pt-based electrocatalysts. However, realizing the four-electron
pathway and developing highly antipoisoning nonprecious metal ORR
electrocatalysts are key challenges in practical energy devices. Herein,
atomic-level Fe doping was applied to Co@CoO core–shell nanoparticles
anchored in a porous carbon–nitrogen framework (denoted Fe–Co@CoO/NC)
derived from FeCoZn metal–organic frameworks. The Fe–Co@CoO/NC
exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.895 V in an alkaline medium, superior
to that of commercial Pt/C (0.842 V), and high in situ methanol and
CO tolerance. In situ spectroscopic characterizations and Rotating
Ring-Disc Electrode (RRDE) investigations reveal that four-electron
ORR is achieved using Fe–Co@CoO/NC through O–O bond
breaking in OOH* intermediate species. In addition, density functional
theory calculations show that compared with Pt, Fe–CoO effectively
suppresses H 2 O 2 generation and favors a more
advantageous four-electron reaction pathway. Fe–Co@CoO/NC as
a cathode material for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) reaches
a peak power density of 113.7 mW·cm –2 , markedly
outperforming commercial Pt/C (72.0 mW·cm –2 ). This work provides an effective strategy for preparing high-efficiency
nonprecious metal four-electron ORR catalysts with intrinsic tolerance
to methanol and CO for DMFC devices.
