Chemiresistive flexible gas sensor for NO2 sensing at room-temperature using in situ constructed Au@In2S3/In2O3 hybrid microflowers

Bingliang Wang,Yongjiao Sun,Yimeng Dong,Yuchen Hou,Zhiyuan Lu,Zihan Wei,Wendong Zhang,Koichi Suematsu,Jie Hu

The construction of a novel Au nanoparticles loaded In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 hybrid microflowers composite was conducted through a well-designed hydrothermal and partial oxidation method and used for NO 2 sensing at room-temperature (RT). The characterization data confirmed the hybrid structures and demonstrated that the ratio of adsorbed oxygen species on the surface increased after partial oxidation. The sensing performance of flexible gas sensors based on In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 , In 2 O 3 , Au x In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 (x = 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%) were tested and compared at RT. Heterostructure construction and Au NPs loading significantly improved the sensing properties at RT. Peculiarly, the response value of 1 wt% Au NPs loaded In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 (Au 1 In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 ) sensor for 100 ppm NO 2 at RT was 20.7, which was 9.2 times higher than that of In 2 O 3 sensor. Meanwhile, it also possessed excellent selectivity, fast response/recovery time (12/27 s), good repeatability, long-term and mechanical stability. The outstanding sensing performance for NO 2 at RT mainly associated to the heterojunction between In 2 S 3 and In 2 O 3 and the catalytic effect of Au NPs. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate and analyze the gas adsorption and charger transfer, which related to the enhanced sensing performance.

Cu-MOF-Derived C-Doped CuO/Cu2O Hollow Nano-Octahedrons for Room-Temperature NO2 Sensing at the ppb Level

Chaofan Ma,Qun Yang,Huiyu Su,Huimin Yang,Xiaoxia Wang,Dawen Zeng

P-type semiconductors [copper oxide (CuO) and cuprous oxide (Cu2O)] have been widely researched as good gas sensing materials due to their unique oxygen adsorption properties. In this work, C-doped CuO/Cu2O hollow nano-octahedrons have been prepared by thermal decomposition of the Cu-based metal–organic framework ([Cu3(BTC)2]n). The CuO and Cu2O nanoparticles form nano-octahedron heterojunctions by a close packing mode. A large number of active heterojunction sites were exposed, which significantly increased the adsorbed oxygen (O2–) content. Meanwhile, doping C in the lattice of the heterojunction effectively reduces the band gap of CuO/Cu2O and promotes the chemical reaction of the target gas on the surface of the material. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the CuO/Cu2O heterojunction has strong adsorption ability for NO2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further reveals that C-doped CuO/Cu2O hollow nano-octahedrons-40 min heterojunction has the best electron transport performance. The sensors have good gas sensing response (22.88–50 ppm) and selectivity to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at room temperature (28 °C). In addition, the sensor has extremely low detection, which can detect parts per billion level NO2 (20.50% to 100 ppb). It is expected to provide a reference for the development of a room-temperature NO2 sensor.

Improved ppb level SnO2@In2O3 sensor induced by In2O3 nanoparticles embedded on SnO2 nanoflower for superior NO2 sensing performance

Sufaid Shah,Shahid Hussain,Salah Ud Din,Abdulnasser M. Karami,You Tianyan,Mingsong Wang,Guiwu Liu,Guanjun Qiao

The current study, accurately designed and created a two-dimensional (2D) structure of SnO 2 nano-flowers and In 2 O 3 nanoparticles using a simple hydrothermal technique and sol-gel method, respectively. On the outer surface of SnO 2 nanoflowers the In 2 O 3 nanoparticles were uniformly growing, clearly revealed by field emission scanning electron microscopic. Besides, crystal phase structure, surface area and elementals composition were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, EDS, XPS and the gas sensing properties of In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs. The results exhibited that 2 wt% In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs sensor is highly sensitive to NO 2 , the response (R g /R a ) to 30 ppm NO 2 is 94.5, and at 50 ppb the response measured 0.61 at 150 °C, the response time is 32 and 51s, respectively, along with good moisture resistance. Besides along with excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and relative humidity (RH) in high-humidity environment, the 2 wt% In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs still maintain high response 91 at 30 ppm. More importantly, at room temperature the response was (Rg/Ra = 1.01) at detection limit 300 ppb towards NO 2 , which could use be for trace NO 2 gas detection. The large specific surface areas of SnO 2 , the abundance of oxygen species adsorbed on the surface, the distinctive electron transformation between heterojunction materials, and high electron transmission channel of SnO 2 and In 2 O 3 transition layer were all considered to have a synergistic effect thatin2 contributed to excellent sensing properties of In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs.

Ultrasensitive room-temperature NO2 gas sensor based on graphene-modified Cu2O nanocomposites: A combined experimental and first-principles study

Wenbin Ren,Jinfeng Luan,Liang Yin,Runjia Xu,Changchun Wang,Pinhua Zhang,Guangliang Cui,Kesong Yang

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas detection is crucial for environmental monitoring and pollution control. Here we report an ultrasensitive room-temperature NO 2 gas sensor based on graphene-modified Cu 2 O nanocomposite using a simple hydrothermal method. Gas sensing tests of the composites with different graphene contents reveal that those modified with 0.4 wt% graphene (0.4G-Cu 2 O) demonstrate the best performance, showing three times higher sensitivity than that of pure Cu 2 O. Additionally, 0.4G-Cu 2 O exhibits significantly reduced response and recovery times of 20 s and 65 s, respectively, which are notably shorter than those of many other sensing materials. These advantages were attributed to the unique nanostructure formed by graphene and Cu 2 O, where graphene enhanced the gas adsorption sites on the material surface and improved its conductivity. A combined experimental and first-principles study further elucidated the mechanisms behind the improved performance, highlighting the synergistic effects of graphene modification.

Visible Light-Activated Room Temperature NO2 Gas Sensing Based on the In2O3@ZnO Heterostructure with a Hollow Microtube Structure

Ying Li,Xiangyang Wei,Qingyuan Liu,Diming Zang,Rui You

The persistent challenge of poor recovery characteristics of NO2 sensors operated at room temperature remains significant. However, the development of In2O3-based gas sensing materials provides a promising approach to accelerate response and recovery for sub-ppm of NO2 detection at room temperature. Herein, we propose a simple two-step method to synthesize a one-dimensional (1D) In2O3@ZnO heterostructure material with hollow microtubes, by coupling metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) (MIL-68 (In)) and zinc ions. Meanwhile, the In2O3@ZnO composite-based gas sensor exhibits superior sensitivity performance to NO2 under visible light activation. The response value to 5 ppm of NO2 at room temperature is as high as 1800, which is 35 times higher than that of the pure In2O3-based sensor. Additionally, the gas sensor based on the In2O3@ZnO heterostructure demonstrates a significantly reduced response/recovery time of 30 s/67 s compared to the sensor based on pure In2O3 (74 s/235 s). The outstanding gas sensing properties of the In2O3@ZnO heterostructure-based sensors can be attributed to the enhanced photogenerated charge separation efficiency resulting from the heterostructure effect, and the improved receptor function toward NO2, which can increase the reactive sites and gas adsorption capacity. In summary, this work proposes a low-cost and efficient method to synthesize a 1D heterostructure material with microtube structures, which can serve as a fundamental technique for developing high-performance room-temperature gas sensors.

Integrated SO2/NO2-containing CO2 capture and methane dry reforming over Ni-Ca dual functional material: A mechanistic study

Bocheng Yu,Muqing Yang,Yijian Qiao,Yaozu Wang,Yongqing Xu,Xuan Bie,Qinghai Li,Yanguo Zhang,Shuzhuang Sun,Hui Zhou

Integrated carbon capture and utilization (ICCU) has emerged as a promising strategy toward carbon neutrality. However, most existing studies rely on simulated flue gas compositions, neglecting the impact of common impurities such as sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), thereby limiting the practical industrial applicability of ICCU technologies. Herein, we systematically investigate the effects of SO2 and NO2 at various concentrations on the adsorption-catalysis performance based on a representative Ni-Ca dual functional material (DFM) in ICCU-dry reforming of methane (ICCU-DRM) process. Exposure to 100 ppm SO2 showed negligible influence on catalytic activity but markedly inhibited carbon deposition. Further increasing the SO2 concentration to 500 ppm led to complete deactivation of the DFM. NO2 exhibited a similar concentration-dependent trend to SO2, albeit with a comparatively lower impact. Mechanistic analysis revealed that both SO2 and NO2 promote the formation of a coating layer of calcium-containing compounds on the surface of Ni nanoparticles, accounting for the part or total deactivation. These findings offer critical insights into the industrial applications of ICCU systems under realistic flue gas conditions.

Interface engineering of MXene using ZSM-5 molecular sieve: Atomic-level charge transfer pathways for ultra-sensitive NO2 detection

Shenghui Xia,Chen Chen,Jinhong Liu,Yu Zhang,Hui Zhang,Thomas Thundat,Ajit Khosla

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a highly toxic air pollutant that endangers human health, environmental sustainability, and ecosystems. To address this issue, we designed an inorganic heterogeneous interface by integrating ZSM-5 molecular sieves with MXene via a facile synthesis route. This unique architecture synergizes the dual cross-channel framework of ZSM-5 and the high electrical conductivity and abundant surface functional groups of MXene. This combination greatly enhances electron transfer kinetics, interfacial NO 2 adsorption, and gas sensing properties. The optimized MXene/ZSM-5 nanocomposite achieves an ultra-low NO 2 detection limit of 1 ppm. Its response is 79.78 % higher than that of original MXene. The nanocomposite also exhibits excellent stability and significant anti-interference properties. Correlation studies confirm consistent performance across humidity and atmospheric conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the charge transfer pathways and adsorption mechanisms at the atomic level that enhance sensitivity. By pioneering the MXene/ZSM-5 interface and systematically investigating its gas interaction kinetics, this work provides fundamental insights for designing next-generation MXene-based gas sensors.

Facets and oxygen vacancies dual-engineering of CeO2-rGO nanocomposites for low-temperature NO2 detection: Experimental and DFT studies

Weirong Zhou,Guoxuan Gu,Chao Liao,Yuan Gao,Jiayin Han,Dehao Kong,Yubing Gao,Zhangjun Wang,Ning Yu,Geyu Lu

Detecting trace levels of hazardous gas nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) at low temperatures still remains a persistent challenge. In this work, CeO 2 nanooctahedrons, nanorods and nanocubes with different exposed facets were synthesized and subsequently decorated with rGO. The NO 2 sensing properties of three CeO 2 nanocrystals-rGO nanocomposites at 65 ℃ were systematically investigated. CeO 2 nanocubes-rGO with (100) exposed plane showed superior sensing performance with eminent selectivity, long-term stability and low limit of detection (75 ppb). The results of characterizations and DFT calculations indicated the presence of abundant oxygen vacancies on (100) plane, due to the low formation energy of oxygen vacancy. Besides, the nature of polar plane and low adsorption energy on defective (100) plane promoted the adsorption of NO 2 on CeO 2 nanocubes-rGO nanocomposites. The decoration of rGO improved the electrical conductivity of CeO 2 , established the heterojunction and generated additional oxygen vacancies on the heterointerfaces. Therefore, the outstanding NO 2 sensing characters of CeO 2 nanocubes-rGO could be attributed to the polar exposed planes, abundant oxygen vacancies and plentiful interfacial heterojunctions. The present approach sheds light on the rational design of sensing materials via facet- and defect-engineering, and developed a CeO 2 -based NO 2 sensors with a low working temperature for environmental monitoring and safety assurance.

Nickel-Doped Tin Selenide Nanosheets for Detection of NO2 at pbb Levels with Fast Response and Recovery at Room Temperature

Yingchun Dong,Jiongyue Hao,Yijie Shi,Yanqiao Ding,Wen Niu,Yuanting Yu,Hangyu Liu,Chun Huang,Yuhui He,Xiangshui Miao,Wei Hu,Yong He

Monitoring of reactive nitrogen by the Internet of Things (IoT) is urgently needed for sustainable nitrogen management to debilitate ill-health and achieve climate-stable. However, the real-time detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at parts per billion (ppb) levels using a low-temperature chemiresistive gas sensor with high sensitivity and fast response and recovery remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we propose a facile one-step hydrothermal method for substituting nickel into tin selenide (SnSe) nanosheets, which effectively enhances the room temperature (RT) response/recovery speed and sensitivity of SnSe-based sensor toward NO2. The Ni-doped SnSe sensor with a vintage doping ratio exhibits an enhanced absolute response value of 20.06 times (58.99% vs 2.94%) toward 100 ppb NO2, compared to the pristine SnSe sensor, while also demonstrating a remarkable reduction in response/recovery time (10.32 s and 11.88 s vs 112.43 and 111.14 s). Moreover, the Ni-doped SnSe sensor exhibits remarkable selectivity and exceptional response stability. Through density functional theory (DFT) analysis, we demonstrate that the introduction of Ni atoms into the SnSe lattice generates deep impurity energy levels in the band structures, creating more active sites that enhance the interaction between the NO2 molecules and SnSe. Furthermore, these deep impurity energy levels contribute to the ultrafast response/recovery in detecting NO2 using Ni-doped SnSe. Our study presents a straightforward and effective strategy for the development of pollutant gas sensors that exhibit high sensitivity, low power consumption, and fast response/recovery.

Metal salts with highly electronegative cations as efficient catalysts for the liquid-phase nitration of benzene by NO2 to nitrobenzene

Zhou Shenghui,You Kuiyi,Yi Zhengming,Liu Pingle,Luo He’an

Metal salts with highly electronegative cations have been used to effectively catalyze the liquid-phase nitration of benzene by NO 2 to nitrobenzene under solvent-free conditions. Several salts including FeCl 3 , ZrCl 4 , AlCl 3 , CuCl 2 , NiCl 2 , ZnCl 2 , MnCl 2 , Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ∙9H 2 O, Bi (NO 3 ) 3 ∙5H 2 O, Zr(NO 3 ) 4 ∙5H 2 O, Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ∙6H 2 O, Ni (NO 3 ) 2 ∙6H 2 O, Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ∙6H 2 O, Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , and CuSO 4 were examined and anhydrous FeCl 3 exhibited the best catalytic performance under the optimal reaction conditions. The benzene conversion and selectivity to nitrobenzene were both over 99%. In addition, it was determined that the metal counterion and the presence of water hydrates in the salt affects the catalytic activity. This method is simple and efficient and may have potential industrial application prospects.

A Prospective Method for Absorbing NO2 by the Addition of NaHSO3 to Na2SO3-Based Absorbents for Ship NOx Wet Absorption

Zhao Zhang,Song Zhou,Hongyuan Xi,Majed Shreka

A high nitrate concentration in scrubber water is a major factor that restricts ship applications of NOx wet absorption technology. In this paper, an absorption system (Na2SO3/NaHSO3) that can effectively improve NO2 absorption and reduce the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite was studied. Several factors that affect the NOx absorption efficiency and the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite were investigated in a bubble reactor by using Na2SO3 and Na2SO3/NaHSO3. In addition, the reaction mechanism for the process of NO2 absorption was deduced. The results illustrate that increases in S(IV) concentration and initial NO2 concentration could enhance the NOx absorption efficiency while increases in the NO/NO2 ratio and SO2 concentration decreased the NOx absorption efficiency. Moreover, the maximum NOx absorption efficiency was 97.8% at 0.15 mol/L S(IV) and 1400 ppm of NO2 when using the Na2SO3/NaHSO3 absorption system. The S(IV) concentration was the main factor affecting the NOx absorption efficiency and the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite. Increasing the SO2 concentration slightly affected the NOx absorption efficiency but was beneficial for decreasing the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite. The performance of the Na2SO3/NaHSO3 absorption system was better than that of Na2SO3 in the presence of oxygen. Furthermore, the minimum concentrations of nitrate and nitrite were 13.5 and 0 mg/L, respectively, in the Na2SO3/NaHSO3 absorption system for 1100 ppm of NO2 and 0.3 mol/L S(IV) and were much lower than current regulations for scrubber water. Finally, compared with other experimental results, the Na2SO3/NaHSO3 absorption system exhibits great potential for ship NOx wet absorption, and the addition of NaHSO3 plays a key role in decreasing the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite.

Annealing temperature-regulated oxygen vacancy engineering in In2O3 nanorods for enhanced room-temperature NO2 sensing: Experimental investigation and DFT verification

Ruojin Zhang,Yuhang Du,Longyu Ren,Jiliang Yuan,Mengmeng Xie,Zhaohui Liu,Xiuze Li,Jieqiang Wang,Hongyan Xu

High-performance sensors for toxic gases have been the goal of research in the industry. In this study, In 2 O 3 nanorods were grown on ceramic tubes using a hydrothermal method, and a series of gradient annealing temperatures were set to obtain different samples through annealing in air atmosphere. Among them, In 2 O 3 annealed at 400 °C (In 2 O 3 -400) showed the highest oxygen vacancies and chemical adsorbed oxygen ratio. The gas sensing performance test demonstrated that In 2 O 3 -400 exhibited excellent sensitivity to NO 2 at room temperature, its response was 4.58 at 500 ppb and 146.58 at 50 ppm. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis was used to study the adsorption mechanism of nitrogen dioxide on pure In 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 with V O materials, showing that the existence of oxygen vacancies enhanced the adsorption capacity of In 2 O 3 for NO 2 , and the DFT calculation results were in accordance with the experimental data. This study determined the optimal annealing process conditions, providing theoretical and experimental support for the development of high-performance room-temperature In 2 O 3 -based NO 2 gas sensing devices.
