Hydrogen energy has garnered significant attention due to its high calorific value and minimal environmental impact. However, the high-current electrolysis of water encounters challenges such as insufficient active sites and the disruptive effects from rapidly generated bubbles. In this paper, a small amount of water was introduced to modify the strong coordination ability of metal ions with organic ligands, and prepared 2D Ni MOFs. Subsequently, thin carbon-armed Ni-based catalysts (Ni@TC NPs) were prepared through nickel-assisted low-temperature pyrolysis. Unlike other 3D MOFs, the 2D MOF thin sheets prepared in this work can decompose at low temperatures due to its thin thickness, and the exposed Ni will accelerate the carbonization of surrounding organic groups, resulting in the formation of smaller and uniformly distributed thin carbon-armored Ni@TC NPs at lower temperature. Serving as a Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) electrocatalyst, Ni@TC NPs demonstrate exceptional electrocatalytic performance (low overpotential of 36.6 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and low Tafel slope of 91.06 mV dec −1 ), and long-term stability (over 50 h at 440 mA cm −2 ). The electronic modulation between the thin carbon armor and the metal center endows Ni@TC NPs with excellent kinetic performance, while the carbon armor provides protection in alkaline environments. In addition, the small and dense bubbles that quickly escape greatly reduce the bubble shielding and oscillation effects on the electrode surface, enabling Ni@TC NPs to work stably under high currents.

Catalyst deactivation due to carbon deposition and sintering poses a significant challenge to the efficient dry reforming of CH 4 and CO 2 into syngas, particularly at high Ni loadings. To tackle this difficulty, ordered mesoporous silicas with varied pore symmetries were employed as supports in this study to synthesize the Ni-based catalysts using hydrothermal treatment. The 10% Ni/MCM-41 catalyst exhibited the highest conversion rates for CO 2 (81%) and CH 4 (77%), with favourable H 2 /CO (0.92) ratios indicating efficient syngas production Higher Ni concentrations increase active sites and catalytic performance, they also increase carbon deposition, reducing catalyst durability. At lower Ni loadings (4% Ni), catalysts with a 3D pore structure showed improved activity and stability, effectively reducing carbon deposition. This study demonstrates that optimized mesopore symmetries and Ni loadings can enhance catalyst efficiency and durability for syngas production.

Miscanthus, a promising energy crop, was used for ethylene glycol (EG) production through one-pot catalytic conversion. With a binary catalyst composed of commercial tungstic acid and Raney Ni, the miscanthus with 1 % concentration was transformed into EG with a yield of 35.5%. However, the yield dropped to 13.6% as the miscanthus concentration was increased to 10 %. The underlying reason for the yield decrease was disclosed through analysis of the liquid products, investigation of pretreatments, and characterization of the catalysts. It was found that the protectors on the surface of miscanthus and the lignin component underwent decomposition under reaction conditions, resulting in the formation of some organic acids and unsaturated compounds that preferentially poisoned the Raney Ni catalyst and consequently decreased the EG yield. When the inhibitors were effectively removed by base solvent pretreatment, the EG yield was successfully improved to 39.0% even under 10% concentration of feedstock. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 60: 2254–2262, 2014

Electrodes with high surface area, rapid charge transport, and mechanical robustness are essential for high-performance supercapacitors. In this study, a flexible Ni/Ni–Al layered double hydroxide/activated carbon cloth (Ni/Ni–Al–LDH/ACC) electrode was fabricated through a two-step process comprising potentiostatic Ni electrodeposition followed by hydrothermal growth of Ni–Al–LDH on ACC. The hybrid architecture enhanced ion diffusion and electron transport, leading to significantly improved electrochemical performance. The Ni/Ni–Al–LDH/ACC electrode delivered a high specific capacitance of 867.50 F/g@0.40 F/cm 2 at 7.00 mA/cm 2 , with an energy density of 27.00 Wh/kg and a power density of 3.33 × 10 3 W/kg, retaining 91.20% of its capacity during cycling. An aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor assembled using Ni/Ni–Al–LDH/ACC//ACC exhibited a specific capacitance of 7.68 F/g@0.74 F/cm 2 , together with an energy and power density of 1.91 Wh/kg@726.70 W/kg and a cycling stability of 86.50%. These results demonstrate the material’s strong potential as a low-cost, flexible, and high-efficiency electrode for next-generation energy-storage devices.

Herein, a Cr-doped Ni-Cu/(NiOH) 2 coating supported on nickel foam (Ni-Cu-Cr/NF) was fabricated via a facile one-step electrodeposition strategy and employed as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. In 1 M NaOH, Ni–Cu–Cr/NF requires an overpotential of 30 mV to reach a current density of − 10 mA cm⁻ 2 and exhibits a Tafel slope of 55 mV dec⁻ 1 . These electrochemical results are associated with the combined effects of the multicomponent composition and an increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). The ECSA of Ni–Cu–Cr/NF is approximately 23.6 times that of Ni–Cu/NF. In addition, the catalyst maintains stable operation for 60 h during continuous electrolysis. This work presents a simple preparation method for the novel Ni-Cu-Cr/NF catalyst and systematically investigates the impact of Cr doping on enhancing catalytic performance, providing an effective strategy for the development of nickel-based alloy electrocatalysts. Benefiting from its large specific surface area, abundant defects and functional groups, two-dimensional (2D) laminated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is a kind of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber with great potential. However, the impedance mismatch caused by the excessive conductivity, inappropriate permittivity and lack of magnetic loss seriously hinders the application of MXene to EMW absorption. Herein, multidimensional hierarchical Ni/TiO 2 /C nanocomposites composed of three-dimensional (3D) hydrangea-like Ni/C microspheres and well-arranged 2D carbon sheets embedded with TiO 2 nanoparticles were successfully fabricated from a Ni-based trimellitic acid framework (Ni-BTC) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene via facile in-situ solvothermal assembly and annealing processes. As expected, excellent EMW absorption properties were obtained only by changing the annealing temperature. The minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of -45.6 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.40 GHz (14.6–18.0 GHz) with a layer thickness of only 1.5 mm is obtained by annealing the sample at 700 °C. The outstanding ternary multilayer structure and the optimization of magnetoelectric synergy in impedance matching jointly create its remarkable EMW absorption performance. This work is expected to provide a simple and effective method to design MXene-based EMW absorbing materials possessing high absorption intensity, light weight, wide EAB and thin thickness.

Amorphous/amorphous heterostructures with a large surface area are theoretically anticipated to promote the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability. However, the growth, characterization and theoretical simulation of amorphous/amorphous nanostructured heterostructures are still challenging due to their atomic isotropy. Herein, a novel and simple strategy is developed to synthesize amorphous/amorphous Ni–P/Ni(OH)2 heterostructure nanotubes by immersing Zn@Ni–P nanowires grown by axial screw dislocation in alkaline solution. When used as an HER catalyst, the Ni–P/Ni(OH)2 nanotubes achieve considerably high electrocatalytic activity and decent stability. The significantly low overpotential of 54.7 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 is among the best values reported for transition metal phosphides in alkaline solution. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the abundant defect structures of amorphous Ni–P would shift the Ni 3d band center toward the Fermi level, demonstrating an energy barrier decrease for H2 generation. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of amorphous Ni–P and Ni(OH)2 could significantly enhance H2O dissociation to supply sufficient protons for the HER.

Developing effective and economical materials for emerging electrochemical remediation of persistent organic pollutants has attracted significant research interest. In this study, a heteromorphic self-standing nickel foam@Ni(OH)2/MnO2 (NF@Ni(OH)2/MnO2) electrode was synthesized by a simple solvothermal method and employed for the remediation of persistent organic pollutants. The prepared NF@Ni(OH)2/MnO2 electrode exhibited better performance for the electro-catalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) than that of the NF and NF@Ni(OH)2. In optimized conditions, the NF@Ni(OH)2/MnO2 electrode exhibited the highest TC degradation efficiency (90%) and total organic carbon(TOC) removal (59.02%) among the prepared electrodes. In addition, a higher mineralization current efficiency (MCE) and lower energy consumption (EC) for the NF@Ni(OH)2/MnO2 electrode was achieved. The enhancement occurs primarily because the active MnO2 anchored to the porous and highly conductive Ni foam substrate surface boosts the electron transfer and the generation of hydroxyl radicals, as proved by a free radical trapping experiment and fluorescence spectrum analysis. This study suggests the possibility of a new paradigm in designing effective and practical electro-Fenton electrodes for environmental remediation.

The development of efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts is essential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water splitting. Among them, amorphous bimetallic NiFe-based compounds are recognized as one of the excellent candidates for efficient OER. Herein, the Ni-Fe-Se film is rationally designed via facile one-step electrodeposition with tailored active sites and thicknesses. Accordingly, the optimized sample, with an increased Fe-incorporation level and a thickness of ∼50 nm, shows a low overpotential of ∼290 mV at a current density of 40 mA cm −2 and long-term durability in 1 M KOH solution, representing its overall excellent OER performance. Furthermore, operando Raman and ex-situ XPS are used to identify the active sites for OER. This work provides some new insights into exploring earth-abundant free-standing catalysts for OER toward overall water-splitting applications.

A highly efficient Ni–Mo bimetallic catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction can be obtained from a molybdate incorporated Ni-MOF by thermal decomposition in NH3. The catalyst is composed of crystalline Ni nanoparticles doped with amorphous low valence Mo oxide encapsulated in thin N-doped carbon layers, showing excellent HER performance, featuring a very low overpotential for the HER (η20 = 58 mV), low Tafel slope (57 mV dec−1) and excellent long term stability. The catalyst apparently outperforms N-doped carbon encapsulated Ni catalysts without Mo doping, emphasizing the critical synergetic effect of Mo doping and the surface N-doped carbon thin layer on promoting the performance of Ni based HER catalysts.

Electrochemical water splitting in an alkaline electrolyte for large-scale hydrogen production is currently a hot research topic. However, developing high-performance and durable oxygen-evolving electrocatalysts is an ongoing challenge. In this work we prepared Ni-phytate thin films with a bubble-like structure on Ni-foam through an in situ growth process. The resulting material can be used as an oxygen-evolving electrode in basic media without requiring the use of a conductive binder. The Ni-phytate electrode has high catalytic activity ( η j = 10 mA cm − 2 = 280 mV) and good stability (the current activity remained 95% after 5 h) towards OER. This is an effective approach to simplifying the large-scale preparation of catalysts for water-splitting applications.

Nickle-based catalysts are commonly used for CO 2 methanation. However, there is still potential to improve their catalytic performance under mild conditions. In this study, we synthesized a series of Ru-Ni-Al catalysts from Ru-doped NiAl-hydrotalcite using a hydrothermal method. The Ru-Ni-Al catalyst demonstrated much higher activity for CO 2 methanation than the Ni-Al catalyst that did not have Ru doping. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the enhanced performance of the Ru-Ni-Al catalyst is related to electronic interactions between nickel (Ni) and ruthenium (Ru). The Ru sites transfer electrons to the Ni sites, increasing the local electron density of Ni, which enhances the adsorption and activation of H 2 . Furthermore, the Ru-Ni metal interface sites improve the adsorption and activation of CO 2 . In situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis indicates that adjusting the electronic structure of Ni sites can accelerate the production of intermediates HCOO*, while Ru-Ni intermetallic interface sites can directly dissociate CO 2 into CO*. In addition, CO 2 methanation on the Ru-Ni-Al catalyst follows HCOO*- and CO*-mediated pathways. This study underscores the potential for enhancing CO 2 methanation performance by modulating the electronic structure of Ni sites.
