Nickel oxide (NiO) nanozyme, as an excellent oxidase mimic, have been widely used in fluorescence biological detection, water pollutant analysis, food safety and cell imaging. However, to fully achieve these applications, it is still a great challenge to regulate its crystalline micro/nanostructure and composites to achieve high enzyme activity and high specific surface area. Here, we applied a very simple thermal annealing treatment to restructure the calcined precursor of NiO. Importantly, it was found that oxygen vacancy (OV) concentration of the targeted NiO nanozyme is significantly increased while the annealing atmosphere is argon rather than air. Moreover, the as-prepared novel NiO sample (NiO-OV) nanosheets achieved ca. 2-fold enhancement in specific surface area. It is believed that the higher OV concentration and the larger specific surface area will increase the enzyme activity by accelerating electron transfer rate and increasing catalytic interfaces. The significant improvement of enzyme activity of NiO-OV was verified by the fluorescence "turn-on" experiment of Amplex red (AR). Finally, using NiO-OV/AR system, we constructed a highly sensitive enzyme sensor on L-Cys with a detection limit of 37.8 nM. It also displayed an excellent specificity for ten typical amino acid interferences.

Considering the destructive effect of excess residues of nitrite (NO2–) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in food, herein, we introduce a unique synthetic strategy to design and construct high-performance sensing heterostructure materials [spindle-like Fe3O4/NiO@N-doped carbon (Fe3O4/NiO@N–C)] using Fe-based metal–organic frameworks as self-sacrifice template and further evaluate its quantitative capabilities for NO2– and H2O2 determination. Notably, the well-designed three-dimensional hierarchical hollow Fe3O4/NiO@N–C nanocomposites integrate the significant merits of hollow heterointerface structure and suitable electrocatalytic properties of different nanomaterials, which prompt the exposure of electroactive sites, the acceleration of electron/ion transfer rate, as well as the prolongation of structural robustness when unitized as electrocatalysts for NO2– oxidation and H2O2 reduction. Accordingly, it achieved remarkable sensitivity (1040.3 ± 0.0078 and 615.7 μA mM–1 cm–2 ± 0.0056) and low limit of detection (LOD) (21 and 129 nM) at desirable working potential (0.85 and −0.45 V); meanwhile, their selectivity, durability, and repeatability are also deserved to be declaimed. More importantly, this realizes successful recovery analysis in pickled mustard with high reliability and excellent applicability. Such significative research could provide instructive advice for the reasonable design of other heterostructured metal oxide and further highlight their untapped potential in food analysis, as well as human health and ecosystems.

Ni/NiO is regarded as an ideal candidate material to replace noble metal catalysts due to its good corrosion resistance and excellent hydrogen evolution activity. However, the poor stability of Ni/NiO catalyst in the process of long-term water electrolysis limits its large-scale application. In this study, a facile hydrothermal method was used to successfully synthesize highly active and stable nanoparticulate Mo–Ni/NiO catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) shows that Mo doping can optimize the charge transfer of Ni/NiO, reduce the d-band center and accelerate the H* dissociation from the catalyst surface. COMSOL numerical simulation further confirmed that the granular structure can enhance the ion concentration and promote H 2 generation. Electrochemical tests showed that the overpotential of Mo–Ni/NiO was only 45 mV when the current density was 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution, which was much lower than 158 mV of Ni/NiO. Furthermore, Mo–Ni/NiO exhibited superior stability when operated at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for 150 h with a reduction of overpotential of only 2 mV. This work provides a simple method for improving the HER activity of catalysts with Mo doping, which provides a new idea for designing catalysts with high activity, excellent stability and low cost.

Graphical Using macadamia nut shell from Yunnan as raw material to prepare antibacterial material can save resources. Combining NiO with AC, adding Bi and Fe to optimize antimicrobial properties and magnetic properties.A kind of antibacterial, adsorption-degradable, recyclable and reusable material was constructed. The composite materials show a good prospect in the practical application of water treatment. Although inorganic antibacterial materials that use photocatalytic technology are widely used to inhibit bacterial growth in water bodies, the external light environment limits the efficient utilization of photocatalytic antibacterial materials. The antibacterial materials are usually in powder form and are not conducive to recycling and reuse, limiting their development in practical applications. The main antibacterial ingredient (nickel oxide) was combined with Macadamia nutshell activated carbon (AC) to maintain efficient contact between bacteria and antibacterial active ingredients to apply the material for water treatment. First, different activators (H 3 PO 4 , ZnCl 2 , and KOH) were used to prepare activated carbon (AC) from Macadamia nutshells. Among the three activators, the AC prepared with H 3 PO 4 exhibited the largest specific surface area with well-dispersed pores. Then, Bi and Fe were doped to AC-NiO to improve their antibacterial and magnetic properties. After doping, the antibacterial rate increased to 95% with significantly improved magnetic properties. Moreover, AC-NiO/Bi and AC-NiO/Fe exhibited three antibacterial mechanisms: physical damage, ionic dissolution, and oxidative stress. Finally, the antibacterial test was performed on real water samples from Dianchi Lake in China. Results suggested that AC-NiO/Bi and AC-NiO/Fe could destroy microorganisms in river water samples. The material showed significant adsorption and degradation efficiency for malachite green, methylene blue, and methyl orange dyes. Since the composite material possessed excellent magnetic separation performance, it was easily recovered after use, effectively avoiding secondary pollution while reducing the material cost in practical applications.

The development of efficient and durable non-precious metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a significant challenge. In this work, we present a novel approach combining heterojunction and structural engineering to enhance HER performance. A NiO/Ni layer with a heterogeneous structure is grown on CuO nanorod arrays supported by copper foam. This 3D nanostructure increases the density of active sites, improves mass and electron transport, and accelerates HER kinetics. The rough surface also facilitates rapid bubble release, enhancing catalyst stability under high currents. As a result, the CuO@NiO/Ni catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance, with overpotentials of 86.5 and 198.8 mV at 100 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. Additionally, a two-electrode electrolytic cell using CuO@NiO/Ni and NiFe LDH achieves 500 mA cm −2 at only 1.64 V and maintains excellent stability over 100 h. These findings highlight the potential of CuO@NiO/Ni as a highly efficient, stable catalyst for industrial-scale water electrolysis, and provide a promising approach to addressing the challenges of non-precious metal-based HER catalysts in industrial settings.

Nickel oxide is considered a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, its performance is hindered by significant volume expansion and low electrical conductivity, particularly at larger particle sizes, which lead to a notable decrease in lithium storage capacity and rate performance. To address these challenges, we introduce a nanocomposite strategy to synthesise nickel oxide and lignin-derived porous carbon composites (LPC/Ni/NiO). Through in situ polymerization, lignin macromolecules form a uniform 3D network with nickel carbonate, which, during the subsequent carbonisation process, results in the formation of nickel oxide within a conductive carbon network. This approach reduces the nickel oxide to nanosize and enhances the composite's electrical conductivity, effectively integrating the buffering framework of porous carbon with the high storage capacity of nickel oxide. As a result, the LPC/Ni/NiO composite exhibited significantly improved lithium storage capacity. Notably, when employed as an anode material in lithium-ion half-cells, the optimized composite maintained an excellent specific capacity of 1065 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A/g. It also shown exceptional rate performance, delivering a specific discharge capacity of 505 mAh/g at a current density of 2 A/g, with stable cycling performance. The electrochemical reaction process was further validated using in ex-situ EIS. This study offers valuable insights into scalable synthesis methods for oxide nanocomposites, highlighting their potential as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Rapid charge separation and transfer is the key scientific problem in photocatalysis. The construction of S-scheme heterojunction is one of the effective strategies to promote charge separation and maintain the strong redox properties. Herein, the NiO, K0.2WO3, and NiWO4ternary double S-scheme K0.2WO3/NiO/NiWO4heterojunction (W/NiO) was created by a one-step molten salt method. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) diffuse reflectance spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, photoelectrochemistry tests, and other analyses revealed that the double S-scheme heterostructure broadened the spectral response range of NiO and promoted its separation of photocarriers. Compared with pristine NiO, the modified double S-scheme heterojunction enhanced the surface adsorption of water molecules and the accumulation of intermediate product of HCOO−, and optimized the CO2reduction system, realizing the improved CO yield of 373 μmol·g−1·h−1in Ru(byp)32+/ethanolamine of CO2reduction system. This study indicates that double S-scheme heterojunction could facilitate efficient photogenerated charge transfer and separation, thereby achieving high activity and selectivity for CO2photoreduction. Our work provides a reference for the one-step construction of double S-scheme heterojunction.

Achieving highly sensitive detection of ppb-level NO2 at room temperature remains a significant challenge for metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) due to their low chemical activity. Herein, a synergistic sensitization strategy is proposed, combining highly conductive MXene with high specific surface area mixed MOS. In this work, NiO–SnO2 is synthesized by thermal annealing using Ni–Sn–BTC (BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic) as a template. The mesoporous structure and high conductivity of NiO–SnO2/Ti3C2Tx provide a variety of channels for gas diffusion and carrier transfer. Gas sensor tests reveal that the fabricated NiO–SnO2/Ti3C2Tx sensor exhibits a 4.33-fold improvement in response (Rg/Ra = 70.86 to 200 ppb) to 200 ppb of NO2 at room temperature (RT, 25 °C) compared to NiO–SnO2. In addition, the sensor also maintains a low detection limit (50 ppb), superior selectivity (response ratio >30), good repeatability (RSD: 2.3%), and long-term stability at RT and 60% RH (RH: relative humidity). The outstanding sensing properties are mainly attributed to the functionalized surfaces and multiple-type heterojunctions formed by NiO, SnO2, and Ti3C2Tx phases, which significantly improve gas adsorption and electrical transduction function of the sensor.

Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries face significant challenges, including capacity fading and restricted rate performance, primarily caused by the passivation of active materials, the polysulfide shuttle phenomenon, and sluggish redox reactions. To address these issues, a composite material comprising CoSe quantum dots (QDs)/NiO PCNFs (porous carbon nanofibers) has been designed and synthesized. This innovative design enhances the accessibility of active sites, which play a vital role in effectively anchoring and converting lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). The CoSe quantum dots (QDs) embedded in NiO porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) leveraged the synergistic interactions between their components to achieve exceptional cyclic stability, maintaining an ultra-low capacity decay rate of 0.034 % per cycle over 500 cycles at a current density of 2 C. The heterostructure and the built-in electric field (BIEF) work in concert to mitigate the polysulfide shuttle effect and promote faster electron and lithium-ion transport. This advanced architecture presents a promising strategy for enhancing the energy density and cycle lifespan of Li–S batteries, advancing their potential for practical implementation.

The practical application of non-noble metal-based hydrogenation catalysts is limited because of their low activity and easy oxidation in air. Here, porous silica-supported ultrafine nickel oxide (NiO) was prepared by calcining an organic–inorganic hybrid 3D nanomaterial that was formed via the Michael addition/Schiff’s base reaction, and hydrolyzation of triethoxysilane. NiO nanoparticles with ca. 2.6 nm diameter was uniformly dispersed and confined in the cogenerated mesoporous SiO 2 skeleton, thanks to the coordination between pyrogallol/amino units and Ni 2+ ions, and the isolation effect of Si-O-Si network. The as-prepared catalyst featured mesoporous structure and high specific surface area (715 m 2 /g), and exhibited excellent activity, selectivity and reusability in the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. Small amount of metallic nickel (Ni x -NiO) that formed on the surface of NiO nanoparticles during the semi-hydrogenation acted as the active species, and the moderate adsorption/desorption energies on Ni x -NiO facilitated the activity enhancement. Most importantly, it showed constant catalytic activity and selectivity after a long-term storage in air. This work provides a green and feasible strategy, as an alternative to the traditional impregnation method, for the preparation of ultrafine metal-supported catalysts with air-stability and reusability.

Reusable catalysts based on non-noble metals with broad applicability for nitrile catalytic hydrogenation are key to achieving more sustainable primary amine production. Herein, a simple and efficient carbon-coated non-noble nickel-based catalyst (Ni/NiO@C-600-200-1-H₂O) was developed for the hydrogenation of aromatic substituted nitriles to aromatic substituted amines under relatively mild conditions (120 °C, 10 bar H₂, 4 h). The carbon-coated structure endows the catalyst with excellent anti-agglomeration properties, significantly enhancing its cyclic stability. The catalyst exhibits high tolerance toward various functional groups, including halogen, methyl, and methoxy, achieving remarkable conversion rates (over 99%) and product selectivity (up to 98.25%). Additionally, the catalyst's magnetic properties facilitate easy recovery and reuse. When applied to a continuous flow reactor for benzonitrile hydrogenation under optimized conditions, the catalyst demonstrated a conversion rate and selectivity exceeding 99%, with continuous operation lasting up to 31 h.

The rapid advancement of 5G communication, radar detection, and marine engineering has intensified the dual challenges of electromagnetic interference and metal corrosion, necessitating materials that integrate high-performance microwave absorption with durable anticorrosion protection. However, traditional absorbing materials often suffer from high density, poor impedance matching, or inadequate corrosion resistance, while binary composites lack sufficient multifunctional synergy. Herein, we reported a ternary MXene-NiO-PPy composite engineered to overcome these limitations. Through in situ polymerization, we constructed a unique “sheet-wire” architecture where NiO nanowires and polypyrrole (PPy) coatings were uniformly anchored on MXene layers. Systematic investigation reveals that the composite with an MXene:NiO:PPy mass ratio of 1:1:0.75 exhibited superior microwave absorption, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of − 36.80 dB at 16.16 GHz with a thickness of 7.6 mm. The enhanced absorption mainly originates from dielectric loss associated with conductive loss, interfacial polarization, and dipolar polarization, together with optimized impedance matching and multiple reflection effects within the heterogeneous network. In particular, NiO contributes mainly by constructing abundant heterogeneous interfaces and regulating the local dielectric environment, thereby promoting interfacial polarization and facilitating impedance matching. Meanwhile, when incorporated into waterborne epoxy (WEP) coatings at 1.5 wt% loading, the composite provided outstanding long-term corrosion resistance, as evidenced by a charge transfer resistance of 1.285 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 after 60 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The enhanced protection is associated with the tortuous barrier effect of MXene, the passivation capability of PPy, and the structural reinforcement provided by NiO nanowires.
