A novel PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 nanohybrid was synthesized by depositing Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles modified with γ -Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) on the surface of hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) sheets covered with polydopamine (PDA). Then, PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids was dispersed in epoxy resin to prepare composite coating samples. Many characterizations revealed that the functionalized Al 2 O 3 successfully deposited on the surface of PDA-BN platelets and PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids showed good dispersibility in the epoxy resin, and the interfacial adhesion between hybrids and epoxy matrix was improved. Furthermore, the effects of Al 2 O 3 , h-BN and various mixtures of PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids at a low weight fraction of 1 % on the corrosion resistance of epoxy coating were studied by electrochemical measurement and salt spray test. The potentiodynamic polarization test revealed that PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 hybrids have a corrosion inhibitive performance. Moreover, the coating resistance of PDA-BN@f-Al 2 O 3 (3:1)/epoxy was enhanced by three orders of magnitude compared with neat epoxy after 5 d immersion. This study provides a promising application prospect for the development of superior metal protective organic coatings.

The issue of oily wastewater treatment has become a worldwide challenge due to increasing industrial oily wastewater and frequent oil spill accidents. As an integral part of practical sewage treatment, pretreatment is conducted to remove inorganic particles, floating oil, and some emulsified oil, and to pave the way for post-treatment. Here, we report a facile fabricated, hydrostable, and rapid underwater-formed superoleophobic copper mesh with polydopamine (PDA) coating for efficient oily wastewater pre-treatment. Unlike with traditional technologies, using the interface phenomenon to solve the problem of oil/water mixture separation provided a new approach for the low energy input pretreatment process. The PDA coating formed by the in situ Fenton method not only rapidly constructs a protection layer for the etched hierarchical micro-size particles on mesh and results in enhanced hydrophilicity, but also exhibits high uniformity and enhanced stability in acid/alkali medium. Benefiting from the above processes, a very high flux of 25 L m−2s−1and high separation efficiency of 99.0% toward various oil/water mixtures were achieved, revealing excellent prospects for practical usage. Therefore, this new approach offered insight into the development of a cost-effective and functional method for efficient pretreatment of oily wastewater. Keywords:in situ Fenton;polydopamine;underwater superoleophobic;oily wastewater pretreatment

Prevention of bacterial infection and promotion of osseointegration are two important issues for titanium (Ti) implants in medical research. In addition, after a biofilm is formed on the surface of implants, the immune system and antibiotic therapy may fail. In this work, bio-functionalized titanium dioxide (TiO2)/molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/polydopamine (PDA)/arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) nanorod arrays (NAs) are prepared on Ti implants to not only kill bacteria noninvasively upon co-irradiation of 660 nm visible light (VL) and 808 nm near infrared (NIR) light, but also promote the osteogenic activity simultaneously. Dual light irradiation triggers the TiO2/MoS2 NA to generate hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in 10 min. The synergistic effects of the generated hyperthermia and ROS increase the bacterial membrane permeability and bacteria are killed rapidly and efficiently in vitro and in vivo. The biofilm is also eradicated and RGD on the nanorods improves cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. The strategy described here for the design of bio-functionalized coatings on Ti implants has great clinical potential in orthopedics, dentistry, and other medical fields.

Abstract Compound amino acid injection-18 AA (CAAI-18 AA) is widely applied in medical care as a part of total parenteral nutrition systems. Thus, suitable quality control of CAAI-18 AA is of crucial importance for safety of the patients. Tryptophan (TRP) is one of the main components in CAAI-18 AA and may be degraded to 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5-HTP), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), kynurenine (KYN) and indole (IN) under certain conditions, such as oxidation environments, ultraviolet light radiation and nonsterile conditions. The existence of these harmful impurities seriously affects the quality of CAAI-18 AA. Here, a simple HPLC approach with a PDA detector was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of the concentrations of 5-HTP, 5-HT, KYN and IN impurities in CAAI-18 AA. Separation of these four impurities in CAAI-18 AA was achieved under a gradient condition using acetonitrile and 10 mM phosphate buffer (containing 10 mM sodium 1-octanesulfonate, pH adjusted to 1.8 with phosphoric acid). To detect the four analytes with high sensitivity, multi-wavelength detection at 257, 270 and 276 nm was carried out during the separation. The method was validated in accordance with ICH guidelines and the results were compared to that obtained by UHPLC–MS/MS, showing that the two approaches did not provide significantly different results. Our results reveal that the simple and less expensive HPLC method holds great potential for quantitation of the four impurities in CAAI-18 AA. Graphic Abstract

With polydopamine (PDA) acting as interlayer, combined with electrospinning technology and a silanization method, here a versatile method for fabricating a superhydrophobic PES/PDA/ODTS fibrous mat is reported. Scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements were applied to characterize the morphologies and chemical composition changes of the prepared fibrous mats. Their separation ability for oil/water mixtures was measured by self-made instruments. The results show that the fabricated PES/PDA/ODTS fibrous mat displays a water contact angle too large to be assessed by the ordinary amount of water applied in a conventional measurement. In other words, a water drop of less than 10 μL adheres to the syringe needle and leaves with it during the measurement. The prepared PES/PDA/ODTS fibrous mat also shows a threshold sliding angle no more than 2.5°. At the same time, this kind of material exhibits superoleophilicity for organic solvents, such as n -hexane, gasoline, toluene, and chloroform. The experimental contact angles were also analyzed using the Cassie–Baxter model to gain insights into the fundamental microstructure–wetting property relationship. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Employing mussel-inspired concept, a controllable “Sol-Gel-like” condensation of dopamine (DA) and aminosilane coupling agents (A1, A2, A3 represent APTMS, TSPED and TPDA, respectively) was undertaken to synthesize magnetic hollow composites (Fe 3 O 4 @A/PDA), aiming for removing Cr(VI) from wastewater. Compared to reported magnetic amino-functionalized composites for heavy metal removal, it is a new green process via post-grafting pathways that can avoid using organic solvents and high-temperature treatment. Structural characterization and batch experiments are correlated to illustrate the adsorption performance of resultant composites. Upon screening resultant adsorbents, Fe 3 O 4 @A2/PDA exhibited the highest adsorption capacity; the maximum Cr(VI) removal amount could be up to 284.1 mg g −1 at 298 K and pH 2.0. The pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model preferably fitted the adsorption process , besides, the activation energy is 7.17 kJ/mol −1 . The hollow composites could be easily separated from solutions by a magnet, and over 70% Cr(VI) could be removed even after five cycles. Electrostatic attraction and reduction reaction could be used to explain the adsorption mechanism that on the basis of XPS analysis. According to thermodynamic analysis, the adsorption is a spontaneous endothermic process. The high Cr(VI) adsorption capacity, fast adsorption kinetics and easy separation properties of hollow Fe 3 O 4 @A2/PDA composites make it be potential to alleviate Cr-containing aqueous solutions.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) of dopamine (DA) were constructed on the surface of graphene oxide (GO), and attached inside the pores of hollow fibers (HFs) for the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of DA. Scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy indicated that GO–MIP composites were successfully synthesized and modified in the pores of HFs via ultrasonication. Compared with common HFs and HFs modified with non-imprinted polymers (GO–NIP/HF) using the same SPME procedures, the GO–MIP/HF composites showed the best efficiency for the extraction of DA. The selectivity of GO–MIP/HF was investigated based on the selectivity factor (F) using epinephrine and norepinephrine as the structural analogues of DA. The linear range of dopamine was 1.05 × 10−3 to 5.27 × 10−3 μmol mL−1, using this process with a detection limit of 2.64 × 10−4 μmol mL−1. The extraction procedure based on GO–MIP/HF was successfully used for the determination of DA in human serum and its hydrochloride injection, showing average recoveries of 83–96%. GO–MIP/HF was a good carrier for the selective adsorption of DA, and showed promise for the preconcentration of DA in real samples.

A novel colorimetric immunoassay was designed for the sensitive detection of carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125). The success of this immunoassay relies on the use of hollow polydopamine-gold nanoparticles (PDA-Au) for signal amplification to achieve sensitive nonenzymatic colorimetric detection. In particular, PDA-Au was used as a stable and sensitive label and aminated-Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 NPs) were employed to immobilize capture antibody (Ab 1 ) and acted as a separable immunosensing probe. PDA-Au exhibited high catalytic performance towards p -nitrophenol reduction and thus resulted in significant color change and UV/vis signal variations. The immunoassay was performed based on sandwich protocol. As compared to pure Au nanoparticles, the signal amplification and sensitivity of PDA-Au-based assay was significantly improved. For instance, the dynamic range of the developed colorimetric immunoassay for CA125 was 0.1–100 U/mL with a detection limit of 0.1 U/mL at S / N =3. In addition, this immunoassay was also tested for the analysis of clinical serum samples, which demonstrated its potential for practical diagnostic applications.

Membrane wetting, scaling and low flux are challenging obstacles for membrane distillation (MD). However, the lack of advanced membranes capable of achieving both high flux and high wetting/scaling resistance constrains MD potential applications. Herein, a dense Janus membrane (JM) was facilely developed by co-depositing a dense PVA/PDA layer on a highly porous PTFE substrate to overcome this dilemma and systematically compared with omniphobic PTFE substrates with varied pore sizes for the first time. Results showed that, unlike flux-resistance “trade-off” observed for PTFE substrates, dense JM effectively resisted 0.4 mM SDS at a high flux of 56.8 LMH and retarded membrane scaling by 20 mM oversaturated gypsum. Robust wetting resistance was primarily attributed to the sieving effect of the sub-nanometer surface layer, which greatly protected substrate from SDS adsorption and feed intrusion, and was less affected by severe surface concentration polarization and relatively low substrate LEP than PTFE substrates. Strongly polar PVA/PDA layer provided a much more thermodynamically unfavorable continuous interface for gypsum adhesion than PTFE substrates, which played a key role in determining anti-scaling behavior. In contrast, gypsum still tended to rapidly cause membrane scaling in stagnant zones within PTFE substrates when flux was increased. This study shall provide new insights in designing high-performance membranes for robust hypersaline wastewater treatment, and highlighting dense JMs with a macroporous substrate and a highly hydrophilic dense surface layer as ideal alternatives.

Fe3O4@polydopamine@polyamidoamine (Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM) core–shell nanocomposites were successfully fabricated through a monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoflower synthesis, PDA modification and PAMAM grafting. The as-prepared single Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM nanocomposite possesses a high relevant saturation magnetization (Ms) (30.25 emu g−1), while the coercivity (Hc) (10.85 Oe) and retentivity (Mr) (0.9062 emu g−1) were extremely low. The obtained Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM has an adsorption capacity as high as 97.18 mg g−1 for Cu(II), and the adsorption process is in conformity with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the effect of pH and thermodynamics of the adsorption process is also discussed briefly.

Sweat lactate levels are closely related to an individual's physiological state and serve as critical indicators for assessing exercise intensity, muscle fatigue, and certain pathological conditions. Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) offer a promising avenue for the development of low-cost, high-performance wearable devices for electrochemical sweat analysis. The material composition of SPEs significantly impacts their detection sensitivity and stability. In this study, we designed a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with Ti 3 C 2 T x Polydopamine (PDA), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (Ti 3 C 2 T x -PDA-AgNPs) for lactate detection in sweat. The accordion-like structure of Ti 3 C 2 T x provides a large specific surface area and exceptional electrical conductivity. PDA, acting as both a reducing agent and binder, supports the in-situ formation of AgNPs on the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. These AgNPs prevent the restacking of Ti 3 C 2 T x layers, further improving conductivity. The sensor exhibited sensitivities of 0.145 μA mM −1 , with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.181 mM (S/N = 3) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), meeting the requirements for for sweat lactate detection. The sensor was integrated into a wearable micro-electrochemical platform paired with a custom Android application for real-time sweat analysis. Testing on human sweat demonstrated the platform's potential for practical fitness monitoring and healthcare diagnostics applications.

Exploiting biomass polyurethane (PU) coatings derived from vegetable oil adhere to sustainable development strategy, however it faces challenge like inferior wet bonding performance and insufficient protective properties to concrete under harsh marine environment. In this work, inspired by the catecholic chemistry of mussels, the eco-friendly biomass PU was synthesized by hydroxylation and stepwise polymerization of epoxy soybean oil, and by utilizing the catechol-based chemical covalent crosslinking combined with incorporation of polydopamine (PDA) surface modified MXene to composite modify the biomass PU, aiming at enhancing the interfacial bonding performance on moist concrete and its protective properties simultaneously. The Biomass PU composite coating's mechanical and thermal properties, crystallinity, UV aging resistance, water resistance and protective performance of concrete were systematically investigated, the interfacial bonding on wet substrates and protection mechanisms between the Biomass PU and cement-based materials were also revealed. The results demonstrated that DA covalent cross-linking and incorporating PDA@MXene nanosheets into the biomass PU composite significantly enhanced the wet bonding and protective performance to the cementitious substrate. The synergistic enhancement effects of cohesion strength of the biomass PU and favorable interfacial interaction promote the wet bonding strength. The strong covalent crosslink formed between PDA@MXene and the Biomass PU minimized interfacial defects and improved interfacial compatibility, while the well-dispersed PDA@MXene within the PU matrix created a labyrinth effect that extended the diffusion pathways of water and corrosive ion. This work provided a sustainable approach for constructing high-performance biomass PU coatings, offering an effective solution for the long-term corrosion protection of cementitious materials.
