The extractable non-volatile organic compounds from PLA/PBAT-starch blend biodegradable food contact materials and the effect of polymeric contents: Insights from chemical space

Fei Xie,Hanke Li,Jinxin Liang,Zhenwei Liu,Tongmei Ma,Canghao Xie,Ben Dong,Dan Li,Sheng Chen,Huai-Ning Zhong

574 NVOCs comprising 367 oligomers identified in 70 batches of PLA/PBAT-starch FCMs. • Chemical spaces reveal distinct yet characteristic distribution patterns for the oligomers. • PLS-DA discloses intrinsic connections between the NVOCs and the sample categories. • The contents of 142 NVOCs change monotonously with the PBAT/PLA contents. • 16 high-risk NVOCs are prioritized with 14 of them being carcinogenic or genotoxic. The burgeoning demand for biodegradable food contact materials (FCMs) based on polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and starch arouses increasing chemical safety concerns, yet the non-volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) therein remain insufficiently investigated. Herein, 574 NVOCs were identified in 24 batches of blend pellets with designated polymeric contents and 46 batches of PLA/PBAT-starch-based food contact articles (FCAs) by dissolution-precipitation coupled with untargeted liquid chromatography – high resolution mass spectrometry, and exhibited characteristic distribution patterns in the molecular-descriptor-derived chemical spaces. Chemometric analyses further identified the oligomers as essential markers to differentiate samples of various categories. Furthermore, the contents of 142 NVOCs were found to correlate with PBAT contents, due to either inherent presence in the polymers or starch-induced transformation. In addition, hazard identification unveiled that molecule complexity (FMF) of the NVOCs was a statistically significant indicator of chemical hazards, and subsequent risk assessment identified 16 potentially high-risk NVOCs, wherein 14 of them are subjected to carcinogenic or genotoxic risk, and 10 of them are identified via migration assays. This work presents an effective paradigm for uncovering the sophisticated chemical profile of biodegradable FCMs, thus being beneficial to fostering the chemical safety of FCMs and related products. A Hierarchical Porous Bowl-like PLA@MSNs-COOH Composite for pH-Dominated Long-Term Controlled Release of Doxorubicin and Integrated Nanoparticle for Potential Second Treatment

Jianming Pan,Runrun Wu,Xiaohui Dai,Yijie Yin,Guoqing Pan,Minjia Meng,Weidong Shi,Yongsheng Yan

We chemically integrated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and macroporous bowl-like polylactic acid (pBPLA) matrix, for noninvasive electrostatic loading and long-term controlled doxorubicin (DOX) release, to prepare a hierarchical porous bowl-like pBPLA@MSNs-COOH composite with a nonspherical and hierarchical porous structure. Strong electrostatic interaction with DOX rendered excellent encapsulation efficiency (up to 90.14%) to the composite. DOX release showed pH-dominated drug release kinetics; thus, maintaining a weak acidic pH (e.g., 5.0) triggered sustained release, suggesting the composite’s great potential for long-term therapeutic approaches. In-vitro cell viability assays further confirmed that the composite was biocompatible and that the loaded drugs were pharmacologically active, exhibiting dosage-dependent cytotoxicity. Additionally, a wound-healing assay revealed the composite’s intrinsic ability to inhibit cell migration. Moreover, pH- and time-dependent leaching of the integrated MSNs due to pBPLA matrix degradation allow us to infer that the leached (and drug loaded) MSNs may be engulfed by cancer cells contributing to a second wave of DOX-mediated cytotoxicity following pH-triggered DOX release.

In-situ cross-linking strategy for achieving excellent impact resistance and thermal insulation of closed-cell poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) foams

Xinyi Chen,Sisi Tian,Yiwei Fu,Wanyi Fan,Xiaobei Liu,Yitong Ding,Ze Kan

Owing to inherent issues like interfacial stress concentration, open-cell, a low volume expansion ratio ( VER ) and cell density, the impact resistance and thermal insulation of supercritical foamed poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blend foams remain unsatisfactory. To overcome these challenges, an in-situ cross-linking strategy is employed to enhance the compatibility between PLA and poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB), while improving the melt strength and crystallization behavior of the blends. The modified PLA/P4HB blend exhibits a blurred interfacial boundary with fewer stress concentrations. As a result, the specific impact strength increases from 9.76 to 26.17 kJ·m −2 /(g·cm −3 ) after foaming. The ambiguous interface and enhanced melt strength reduce the risk of cell wall rupture and collapse, while the increased crystallization provides additional nucleation sites. Consequently, the modified PLA/P4HB foam transitions from an open-cell to a closed-cell structure, achieving a VER of 35.4 and a cell density of 2.0 × 10 7 cells/cm 3 , representing respective increases of 16.1-fold and 9.1-fold compared to unmodified PLA/P4HB foam. At this time, the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the PLA/P4HB foam reach 31.5 mW/m·K and 8.1 × 10 −7  m 2 /s, respectively. In conclusion, this strategy provides a method for producing PLA/P4HB foams with high impact resistance and thermal insulation, and addresses common issues associated with PLA-based blends foam.

Blending caproylated starch with poly(acrylic acid)-g-protein-g-poly(methyl acrylate) as an adhesive material to improve the adhesion of starch to PLA fibers

Wei Li,Youkang Wu,Zhenzhen Xu,Qingqing Ni,Jian Xing,Xuchen Tao

Caproylated starch (CS) with different degrees of substitution (DS) and poly(acrylic acid)- g -protein- g -poly(methyl acrylate) (PAA- g -protein- g -PMA) were prepared and then blended as an adhesive material to improve the adhesion of starch to polylactic acid (PLA) fibers for fulfilling the high-valued utilization of feather wastes and enhancing the end-use issue of starch in textile sizing . The CS and PAA- g -protein- g -PMA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), respectively. The adhesion was evaluated by measuring bonding forces of the blends to PLA fibers. The FT-IR and 1 H NMR analyses demonstrated the successful preparations of CS and PAA- g -protein- g -PMA, respectively. The adhesion results showed that the adhesion of CS/PAA- g -protein- g -PMA blends to PLA fibers were superior to that of acid-converted starch (40.6 N), indicating that blending can improve the adhesion of starch to PLA fibers. The adhesion of the blends to PLA fibers was correlated with the DS values of CS samples and blending ratios of PAA- g -protein- g -PMA to CS. With the increase in the DS, bonding force increased, reached its highest value of 53.9 N at DS = 0.027, and then decreased to 52.2 N (DS = 0.033). When the DS value was 0.027, the forces gradually increased from 45.5 to 53.9 N as the ratios were raised from 0 to 7.5 wt%. In brief, the suitable DS value and blending ratios were 0.027 and 5 ~ 7.5 wt% for the use of CS/PAA- g -protein- g -PMA blend as an adhesive material in the application of PLA sizing.

Extraordinary toughness and heat resistance enhancement of biodegradable PLA/PBS blends through the formation of a small amount of interface-localized stereocomplex crystallites during melt blending

Zhonghui Gu,Jiangang Zhang,Wen Cao,Xiong Liu,Jiashun Wang,Xianming Zhang,Wenxing Chen,Jianna Bao

Simultaneously improving the toughness and heat resistance of poly( l -lactide) (PLLA) is significant for expanding biodegradable materials' application range. In this work, reactive compatibilizers containing PBS and PLLA (PBS-St-GMA-PLLA (SGL)) or poly( d -lactide) (PBS-St-GMA-PDLA (SGD)) were synthesized and incorporated in blends of commercial PLLA and PBS as compatibilizers. The in situ formation of stereocomplex (SC) crystallites of PLA at the interface of PLLA and PBS was successfully achieved through simple melt blending. The effects of SC crystallites, amount of compatibilizers on morphology, crystallization behavior , mechanical properties , heat resistance and degradability properties of PLLA/PBS blends were studied. Morphological evolution showed that SGL and SGD significantly improved the compatibility of PLLA/PBS blends. After incorporating 5% SGD, the elongation at break and notched impact strength of PLLA/PBS blends with SC crystallites reached 273% and 34 kJ/m 2 , respectively, 12 and 5 times than that of pristine PLLA/PBS blends. As compared with PLLA/PBS/SGL blends that cannot form SC crystallites, the tensile strength of the blends was effectively improved by the presence of SC crystallites, ascribing to improved interfacial compatibility and remarkable acceleration in matrix crystallization kinetics of PLLA. Consequently, the blends containing 5% SGD exhibited excellent heat resistance ( E′ 80°C  > 680 MPa) after brief annealing, which far exceeded the PLLA or PLLA/PBS blends. This work may provide a feasible way to prepare PLLA-based materials with excellent comprehensive properties by the formation of SC crystallites.

The PLA/ZIF-8 Nanocomposite Membranes: The Diameter and Surface Roughness Adjustment by ZIF-8 Nanoparticles, High Wettability, Improved Mechanical Property, and Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Xiu Dai,Yu Cao,Xiaowei Shi,Xinlong Wang

In this study, the nanoparticles of metal–organic framework ZIF-8 are incorporated into the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) to prepare the nanocomposite electrospun membrane. The diameter and the surface roughness of the fibers can be successfully controlled by increasing the content of ZIF-8 in the membranes. The prepared PLA/ZIF-8 membranes have increased oil wettability and significantly improved mechanical property compared with pure PLA membrane. The tensile strength, stain at break of PLA/ZIF-8 membrane with 0.5 wt% ZIF-8 are increased to 5.02 MPa and 88.81% compared to 2.77 MPa and 57.89% for pure PLA membranes, respectively. The PLA/ZIF-8 membranes are proved to be good candidate for oil/water separation with high efficiency because of the fast oil wetting ability, the roughness of fibers, and the adsorption effect of the porous ZIF-8 nanoparticles.

Release of Cinnamaldehyde and Thymol from PLA/Tilapia Fish Gelatin-Sodium Alginate Bilayer Films to Liquid and Solid Food Simulants, and Japanese Sea Bass: A Comparative Study

Jingwen Chen,Yinxuan Li,Wenzheng Shi,Hui Zheng,Li Wang,Li Li

This study aimed to develop an active biodegradable bilayer film and to investigate the release behaviors of active compounds into different food matrices. Cinnamaldehyde (CI) or thymol (Ty) was encapsulated inβ-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to prepare the activeβ-CD inclusion complex (β-CD-CI/β-CD-Ty). The tilapia fish gelatin-sodium alginate composite (FGSA) containingβ-CD-CI orβ-CD-Ty was coated on the surface of PLA film to obtain the active bilayer film. Different food simulants including liquid food simulants (water, 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol, and 95% ethanol), solid dry food simulant (modified polyphenylene oxide (Tenax TA)), and the real food (Japanese sea bass) were selected to investigate the release behaviors of bilayer films into different food matrixes. The results showed that the preparedβ-CD inclusion complexes distributed evenly in the cross-linking structure of FGSA and improved the thickness and water contact angle of the bilayer films. Active compounds possessed the lowest release rates in Tenax TA, compared to the release to liquid simulants and sea bass. CI and Ty sustained the release to the sea bass matrix with a similar behavior to the release to 95% ethanol. The bilayer film containingβ-CD-Ty exhibited stronger active antibacterial and antioxidant activities, probably due to the higher release efficiency of Ty in test mediums. Keywords:biodegradable bilayer film;tilapia fish gelatin;β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex;release kinetics;food simulants;active activities

pH-responsive and CD44-targeting polymer micelles based on CD44p-conjugated amphiphilic block copolymer PEG-b-HES-b-PLA for delivery of emodin to breast cancer cells

Kai Cheng,Jie Zhou,Yujie Zhao,Yu Chen,Lan Ming,Da Huang,Rui Yang,Zhenyu Lin,Daozhen Chen

Herein, an amphiphilic block copolymer CD44-targeting peptide-conjugated polyethylene glycol-block-hydroxyethyl starch-block-poly (L-lactic acid) (CD44p-conjugated PEG-b-HES-b-PLA) are synthesized, which could self-assemble into the pH-responsive and CD44-targeting polymer micelles against breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231. Emodin (Emo) is a natural anthraquino with pharmacological activities in anti-tumor effects. However, Emo suffers from poor water solubility, low biocompatibility, rapid systemic elimination, and off-target side effects, resulting in unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems have proven great potential for cancer chemotherapy. The constructed polymeric micelles Emo@CD44p-PM have exhibited an average size of 154.5 ± 0.9 nm characterized by DLS and TEM. Further, the Emo@CD44p-PM have effective Emo-loading capacity, good thermal stability, and pH responsiveness. Intracellular uptake study shows the enhanced cellular internalization of Emo@CD44p-PM due to the increased exposure of CD44p enhances the cellular internalization of Emo@CD44p-PM effectively. Furthermore, the in vitro results showed Emo@CD44p-PM has been observed good biocompatibility and anti-tumor effects. Therefore, the polymeric micelles Emo@CD44p-PM provide a promising delivery strategy of targeted therapy for breast cancer.

Preparation of a novel supramolecular intumescent flame retardants containing P/N/S/Fe/Zn and its application in polylactic acid

Qinyong Liu,Xingyu Chen,Guiyang Zhu,Xiaoyu Gu,Hongfei Li,Sheng Zhang,Jun Sun,Xiaodong Jin

A novel integrative supramolecular intumescent flame retardant was fabricated by self-assembly of melamine, p -aminobenzene sulfonic acid and phytic acid and was abbreviated as MAP. After chelation with Fe 3+ or Zn 2+ , the resulted products (MAP-Fe and MAP-Zn) were melt-blended with polylactic acid (PLA) to enhance the flame retardancy of PLA. The fire performance was characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning and cone calorimeter tests. The results showed that control PLA was flammable with a low LOI of 20.4%, and it cannot satisfy any UL-94 grade for its severe ignited dripping, whilst the incorporation of 3% MAP-Zn increased the LOI to 29.2%, upgraded the UL-94 rating to V-0, and reduced the peak heat release rate by 18.7%. It was proposed that MAP-Zn mainly promoted the formation of more graphitic carbon in the char residues . In addition, the presence of 3% MAP-Zn slightly reduced the tensile strength of PLA from 64.9 MPa of the control PLA to 60.1 MPa, which met the requirements of most practical applications.

Preparation of a biobased core-shell flame retardant and its application in polylactic acid

Xiaolong Wang,Weiguang Gong,Xin Meng,Chenyang Li,Jin Gao

Biobased flame retardant (FR) has attracted great interest owing to its green and degradable properties similar to polylactic acid (PLA). In this work, with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as the core, chitosan (CS) and halloysite (HNT) as the shell, a biobased FR (APP@CS@HNT) with a core-shell structure was prepared through the self-assembly method. The flame retardancy of PLA composites has been improved with the addition of the FR (APP@CS@HNT). With the loading of 17 wt% APP@CS@HNT, the PLA composite shows a high limiting oxygen index value (29.4%) and achieves vertical burning (UL-94) test V0 rating. Compared with pure PLA, the cone calorimetry test indicates that the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release decrease from 299.88 to 152.29 kW/m 2 and from 102.0 to 71.2 MJ/m 2 , respectively. The addition of APP@CS@HNT can also improve the smoke suppression performance of PLA composites. Such enhanced flame retardancy is mainly attributed to APP@CS@HNT prompting the PLA matrix to produce more continuous and denser carbon layers at a lower temperature to form physical barriers.

Facile preparation of patterned petal-like PLA surfaces with tunable water micro-droplet adhesion properties based on stereo-complex co-crystallization from non-solvent induced phase separation processes

Ailin Gao,Yongqing Zhao,Qing Yang,Yinyi Fu,Lixin Xue

A facile method to prepare rose petal-like quasi-superhydrophobic poly(lactide) (PLA) membrane surfaces with tunable water droplet adhesion properties based on the stereo-complex co-crystallization of PLAs via non-solvent induced phase separation processes is reported. The co-crystallization of the D- and L-enantiomer of PLA on the bottom surfaces contacting the base glass has led to the formation of hierarchical microstructures containing half-developed to well-developed micrometer-scale papilla or spheres and nanometer-scale folds depending on the thickness of the primary membranes. The bottom surfaces of thinner PLA membranes with primary thicknesses of 100–200 micrometers containing half-developed smaller microspheres and a wider gap space could firmly pin water droplets even upside down with an extremely high adhesion force of about 118–132 μN with water drop breakup, while the bottom surfaces of thicker PLA membranes with a primary thickness of 300–500 micrometers containing larger well developed microspheres with narrower gap space could allow the rolling of water droplets with lower adhesion forces of 74–99 μN. Strategies were developed to create patterned PLA quasi-superhydrophobic membrane surfaces with zoned water droplet adhesion properties for controllable micro-droplet transportation and potentially image encrypting applications.

A Sandwich-Structured Piezoresistive Sensor with Electrospun Nanofiber Mats as Supporting, Sensing, and Packaging Layers

Zicong Zhao,Bintian Li,Liqun Xu,Yan Qiao,Feng Wang,Qingyou Xia,Zhisong Lu

Electrospun nanofiber mats have been used as sensing elements to construct piezoresistive devices due to their large surface area and high porosity. However, they have not been utilized as skin-contact supporting layers to package conductive nanofiber networks for the fabrication of piezoresistive sensors. In this work, we developed a sandwich-structured pressure sensor, which can sensitively monitor human motions and vital signs, with electrospun nanofiber mats as supporting, sensing, and packaging layers. The nanofiber mats were prepared by electrospinning with biocompatible poly (l-lactide) (PLA), silk fibroin (SF), and collagen (COL) as raw materials. The synthesized PLA–SF–COL mat possesses a non-woven structure with a fiber diameter of 122 ± 28 nm and a film thickness of 37 ± 5.3 μm. Polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were grown in-situ on the mat to form a conductive layer. After stacking the pristine and conductive mats to form a PLA–SF–COL mat/(PPy-coated mat)2structure, another layer was electrospun to pack the multilayers for the construction of a sandwich-structured piezoresistive sensor. The as-prepared device can sensitively detect external pressures caused by coin loading and finger tapping/pressing. It can also tolerate more than 600 times of pressing without affecting its sensing capability. The human body-attached experiments further demonstrate that the sensor could real-time monitor finger/arm bending, arterial pulse, respiration rate, and speaking-caused throat vibration. The electrospinning-based fabrication may be used as a facile and low-cost strategy to produce flexible piezoresistive sensors with excellent skin-compatibility and great pressure sensing capability.
