Effect of FAlN-PVA Inorganic-Organic Coating Structure on the Insulation Properties of BOPP Film

Xie Jun,Wang Qikai,Qiao Chunying,Xia Guowei,Wang Qi,Li Lin,Xie Qing

Dry-type DC film capacitors, as critical components of converter valves in flexible DC transmission systems, primarily utilize biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film as their internal dielectric medium. The insulation properties of BOPP are key factors ensuring the safe and reliable operation of these capacitors. However, the occurrence of breakdown within the capacitor and flashover in the edge blanking zone are the primary causes leading to reduced capacitor lifespan and even insulation failure. To address this, this paper develops an FAlN-PVA coating to enhance insulation performance. First, an inorganic-organic composite coating is fabricated using AlN and PVA, with the PVA coating designed to modulate the interfacial properties between AlN and the BOPP film, achieving a 4.01% increase in breakdown field strength compared to the BOPP film alone. Simultaneously, AlN is supplemented with fluorinated silane coupling agent liquid-phase grafted to introduce fluorinated groups with strong charge-regulating effects, further modulating the performance of the AlN-PVA composite coating. The breakdown field strength increases by 7.59% compared to BOPP film, further enhancing the interfacial properties of the BOPP film. Subsequently, macro-level testing and micro-level characterization are synergistically employed to analyze the influence of the characteristics and mechanisms of the composite coating's surface application on the insulating properties of BOPP film.

Tang Zhong-Xiang,Wu Bin,Shi Ying-Jia,Jin Meng,Yu Tian,Ren Hui,Ma Ning,Zhan Xue-Qing,Tsai Fang-Chang

Efficient wound management remains a critical challenge in clinical medicine and public health. Hydrogel-based wound dressings have garnered significant attention due to exceptional moisture retention and inherent cooling analgesia effects. This study develops an electrically triggered PVA/Cu-BTC@Aloe composite hydrogel for advanced wound healing. By incorporating Cu-BTC@Aloe nanocomposites (synthesized via Aloe adsorption onto Cu-BTC followed by freeze-thaw crosslinking with polyvinyl alcohol), the material achieves enhanced mechanical properties (tensile strength: 438.9 ± 42.7 kPa, + 47% vs. pure PVA) and dual functional capabilities. Under 3 V electrical stimulation, the cumulative release of Aloe at 3 h increased from 47% to 62%. Meanwhile, the hydrogel achieved antibacterial efficiencies of 97.8 ± 2.2% against Staphylococcus aureus and 99.9 ± 0.1% against Escherichia coli, while maintaining favorable cytocompatibility and promoting directional cell migration toward the anode of fibroblasts. The integration of electroresponsive materials, natural bioactive constituents, and electrical stimulation provides a promising multifunctional platform for electrically assisted wound management.

Lysozyme-Functionalized PVA/CMC/β-Cyclodextrin/Pectin Hydrogel Films for Strawberry Preservation and Flexible Sensing

A multifunctional hydrogel film, denoted as PCDGPL, was developed for strawberry preservation, and its prospective flexible-sensing capability was evaluated. Distinct from previous systems centered on colorimetric freshness indication or chemically/photocrosslinked sensing networks, PCDGPL employs a physically crosslinked, freeze-thawed PVA/CMC/pectin/β-CD matrix to couple lysozyme-associated antibacterial preservation with NaCl-enabled tensile and compressive deformation responses; a full-formulation-minus-β-CD control further isolated the network-modulating contribution of β-CD. The hydrogel network was proposed to be stabilized by freeze–thaw-induced PVA physical junctions, together with multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions among CMC, pectin, and β-cyclodextrin. Glycerol improved flexibility and moisture retention, NaCl provided ionic conductivity, and lysozyme incorporation contributed to the antibacterial activity of the film. The optimized PCDGPL film showed balanced mechanical properties, stable cyclic tensile/compressive behavior, and reliable strain-dependent resistance responses under stretching and compression. It also exhibited effective antibacterial activity againstEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureuswith good cytocompatibility. In strawberry preservation tests, PCDGPL reduced weight loss to approximately 2.5% and decay rate to 15%, while maintaining approximately 97% of the initial firmness after 10 days. This work provides a promising hydrogel-based active packaging platform for strawberry preservation, together with a prospective capability for mechanical deformation sensing.

Highly Robust and Multimodal PVA/Aramid Nanofiber/MXene Organogel Sensors for Advanced Human–Machine Interfaces

Guofan Zeng,Leiting Liao,Zehong Wu,Jinye Chen,Peidi Zhou,Yihan Qiu,Mingcen Weng

Flexible and wearable electronics require soft sensing materials that balance mechanical compliance, stable signal transduction, and durability for human–machine interfaces (HMIs). To address the limitations of single-filler systems, we propose a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/aramid nanofiber (ANF)/MXene organogel (PAM) as a multifunctional soft platform. This design integrates a PVA physically crosslinked network with ANF for mechanical reinforcement and MXene for electrical functionality. The optimized PAM composite exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, including a fracture stress of 2931 kPa, a fracture strain of 676%, and a fracture toughness of 9.04 MJ m−3. Importantly, PAM serves as a single material platform configurable into three sensing modalities. The resistive strain sensor achieves a gauge factor of 3.1 over 10–100% strain and enables the reliable recognition of human joint movements and gestures. The capacitive pressure sensor delivers a sensitivity of 0.298 kPa−1, rapid response/recovery times of 30/10 ms, and is integrated with a wireless module to control a smart car. Furthermore, the PAM-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) delivers excellent electrical outputs (Voc= 123 V,Isc= 0.52 μA,Qsc= 58 nC) and functions as a self-powered smart handwriting pad, achieving a machine-learning-based recognition accuracy of 97.6%. This work demonstrates the immense potential of the PAM organogel for advanced, self-powered HMIs.

Brush-like copolymer and MXene-functionalized PVA/PEEK scaffolds: enhancing lubrication in metatarsophalangeal joint prostheses

Jian Pu,Nengshen Zhang,Luyao Tang,Zemin Ling,Chao Zhang,Jian Song

Prosthetic wear remains a key challenge in metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint replacement, where improved lubrication is essential for reducing interfacial wear and extending implant lifespan. Inspired by the lubrication mechanisms of natural joints, this study proposes a biomimetic strategy that combines a brush-like copolymer with two-dimensional nanomaterials to enhance the tribological performance of artificial MTP joint materials. A brush-like polymer (HAPA) was synthesized by covalently grafting PAMPS side chains onto hyaluronic acid (HA), mimicking the natural lubricin–HA complex. HAPA and MXene nanosheets were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel and physically interlocked within porous polyetheretherketone (PEEK) via freeze–thaw cycles to form a cartilage-inspired composite (PVA/HAPA/MXene–PEEK). The composite exhibited a high water content of 83.0% and characteristic biphasic lubrication behavior. Moreover, it exhibited exceptional lubricating performance against various counterface materials, reducing the coefficient of friction with TC4 to as low as 0.033. This improvement is attributed to the hydration layer provided by HAPA and the potential interfacial lubrication contribution of MXene. The composite further showed good cytocompatibility. Overall, this design offers a promising biomimetic strategy for improving lubrication in MTP joint prostheses, while noting that direct evidence of MXene transfer and antibacterial activity warrants future investigation.

Wood-improved cold-resistant all−in−one supercapacitor assembled from remodelable wood/PVA composite electrolytes

Pu Hou,Hu Lyu,Jiuzhou Zhang,Dawei Zhang,Mingming Sun,Xianzhi Kong,Pengfei Huo

Cold−resistance CPEs were prepared with balsa wood skeleton and PVA/EG gel. • The CPEs showed a high ionic conductivity of 6.08 × 10 −3  S cm −1  at −30 °C. • Cold-resistant all−in−one SCs (ACS) have been prepared by remolding PVA gel. • Cold-resistant ACS showed specific capacitance of 284.8 mF cm −2  at −30 °C. All−in−one configuration and cold−resistance endow energy−storage devices with portability and the ability to work at low temperature but bring harsh electrolyte and electrode requirements. Compared to sandwich-like supercapacitors, all−in−one configured supercapacitors can significantly reduce electrode-electrolyte contact resistance, improve energy density, simplify the assembly process, effectively avoid multilayer structure slip under deformation, and lengthen service life. Herein, cold−resistance composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) were prepared with chemically treated balsa wood skeleton and polyvinyl alcohol/ethylene glycol (PVA/EG) gel. The synergistic effects of wood and gel provide the CPEs with outstanding mechanical properties with high tensile strengths of up to 340 kPa. The microporous structure in the wood provides abundant ion transport channels, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 6.08 × 10 −3  S cm −1 even at −30 °C. A series of cold-resistant all−in−one supercapacitors (ASC) have been prepared by remolding PVA gel, which reduced the electrolyte/electrode interfacial resistance, improved the portability and maintained a low temperature performance. The cold-resistant ACS showed outstanding performance, maintaining a small R s (42.1 Ω) and R ct (18.5 Ω) and high area specific capacitance (284.8 mF cm −2 ) at −30 °C. It is anticipated that cold−resistant, all−in−one supercapacitors based on wood/polymer complex electrolytes offer broad applications as energy storage devices. High-strength PVA-based carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel enabling adaptive plugging of cracks of varying widths

Linxun Li,Houbin Liu,Yuanpeng Wu,Li Wang,Xi Yang,Chunyu Feng

Drilling fluid loss is a major challenge facing oil and gas drilling operations worldwide and often results in significant economic losses. Although traditional liquid-crystal materials (LCMs) offer key advantages such as self-adaptive crack plugging capabilities and adjustable gelation times. However, due to its limited pressure resistance, its range of applications remains limited. In this study, a simple freeze-thaw strategy was employed to innovatively develop a PVA-based plugging hydrogel. This method leverages physical cross-linking properties to reduce the need for chemical cross-linking agents and improve the material's rheological properties. The 15% PVA hydrogel achieved a tensile strength of 6.99 MPa. Its compressive strength was 4 MPa at 80% strain. Furthermore, it exhibited excellent fatigue resistance, with compressive strength decreasing by only 21% after 50 cycles. Simulated plugging tests demonstrated that the prepared hydrogel exhibits excellent sealing performance under a water pressure of 5 MPa. This study provides an economically viable and environmentally friendly solution for preventing drilling fluid loss, making it a highly promising candidate material for deep-sea drilling applications.

PVA eutectogel fibers reinforced with multiphysical networks for mechanically robust and wide-temperature flexible sensors

Rong Lu,Wenhui Xiao,Shujiao Hou,Zheng Li,Xuecui Song,Donghui Ma,Jing Guo,Fucheng Guan,Xiaohang Tuo,Hong Zhang

One-pot wet-spinning strategy for scalable fabrication of PVA eutectogel fibers with triple-network reinforcement. • Multiphysical networks synergistically integrate hydrogen bonds, ionic conduction, and crystalline domains for mechanical-electrical coupling. • Exceptional tensile strength (11 MPa) and elongation (1023%) overcoming strength-toughness trade-off. • Process-driven structure regulation paradigm shifting from composition optimization to forming control. Conductive hydrogels have been widely explored for intelligent wearable devices and flexible electronics; however, simultaneously achieving high mechanical robustness and wide-temperature stability remains challenging. Herein, a one-pot strategy is proposed to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) eutectogel fibers using PVA as the polymer backbone, choline chloride and ethylene glycol as a green solvent system, and ionic liquids (ILs) as ion suppliers, thereby constructing a synergistically reinforced network composed of polymer network - ion-conducting network - crystalline reinforcing network. Assisted by uniaxial stretching and cyclic freezing–thawing treatments, the network structure becomes highly oriented and compact, leading to markedly enhanced mechanical properties and wide-temperature stability. The resulting PVA eutectogel fibers exhibit outstanding and tunable physical properties: specifically, the CEG/PVA₃ fibers possess a high tensile strength of 11 MPa and an ultrahigh elongation at break of 1023%, while the CEG/PVA₁ fibers achieve a peak electrical conductivity of 2.54 mS cm⁻¹ at 25 °C. Meanwhile, these fibers maintain stable strain-sensing performance over a broad temperature range from −40 to 60 °C with a rapid response time of approximately 0.2 s. This work presents a feasible strategy for developing mechanically robust, wide-temperature flexible sensors. Download: Download high-res image (198KB) Download: Download full-size image

Interfacial charge separation in In2S3/N-BC@PVA evaporator for synergistic water disinfection and purification

Yongxin Guo,Hongda Zhang,Siji Chen,Bolun Zhang,Jiaoyang Ji,Gang Wang,Sitong Zhang,Yong Yu

A novel In 2 S 3 /N-BC@PVA hydrogel evaporator was developed for water purification. • The In 2 S 3 /N-BC heterojunction facilitated interfacial charge redistribution and separation. • Synergistic effect achieves > 99% ARB and > 95% ARG removal. • The evaporator achieves a high evaporation rate (3.93 kg m −2 h −1 ). An In 2 S 3 /N-BC@PVA evaporator is constructed based on the synergistic effect of photothermal catalysis and the regulation mechanism of water molecules, which demonstrates the inactivation rate of ARB (99.77 ± 0.12%), removal rate of ARGs (95–99%), and evaporation rate (3.93 ± 0.16 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ). In 2 S 3 /N-BC reduces the equivalent evaporation enthalpy by activating intermediate water within the hydrogel network. At the In 2 S 3 /N-BC interface, strong interactions induce a metallic-like electronic structure characterized by a high density of states near the Fermi level and a reduced work function, which facilitate spatial charge separation and directed the migration of photogenerated carriers. The -NH 2 is electron-bridging sites to facilitate interfacial charge transfer, which promotes the generation of •OH via hole oxidation. Outdoor testing confirms stable freshwater yield and antibacterial efficacy in 30 d. This work integrates photocatalysis and interfacial evaporation in water remediation strategy, and provides a sustainable approach to address antibiotic resistance and freshwater scarcity. An advanced PVA-based hydrogel flexible electrolyte material with high anti-dehydration and electrochemistry performance

Liu Qingye,Wang Chenghua,Zou Chang,Li Jiangtao,Liu Jun,Liu Yilun,Sun Xueyan,Zhao Wei

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as a hydrogel electrolyte faces issues such as fracture, dehydration, and poor conductivity, limiting its application in flexible zinc-air batteries. To address these, we propose a triethanolamine (TEA)-modified PVA-based hydrogel material (TPVA). TEA promoted formation of a uniform mesoporous structure and enables TPVA hydrogel to exhibit excellent mechanical properties, with an elongation at break (425%) approximately twice that of PVA (230%). Additionally, TPVA material retains excellent hydration after 120 h, demonstrating a significant enhancement in water retention. TPVA-based ZABs achieved a power density of 46.1 mW cm −3 , which is 3.1 times enhancement than that of PVA-based (14.9 mW cm −3 ), and demonstrated significantly extended cycling stability, maintaining stable charge–discharge operation for 35.7 h, outperforming PVA system (11.5 h). Dynamic simulation revealed TEA-PVA interactions, with TPVA showing denser hydrogen bond networks and lower potential energy. This work proposes a promising approach to enhance PVA hydrogel electrolytes for flexible ZABs.

Preparation and application of thyme essential oil@halloysite nanotubes-loaded multifunctional pullulan/gelatin/PVA aerogels

Mingke Ding,Weijie Wu,Ruiling Liu,Ben Niu,Huizhi Chen,Xiangjun Fang,Hangjun Chen,Chaoyi Shen,Haiyan Gao

Blueberries are susceptible to microbial contamination and mechanical damage after harvesting, thereby accelerating their quality deterioration. Therefore, in the present work, thyme essential oil@halloysite nanotubes (TEO@HNTs)-loaded pullulan/gelatin/PVA (PGP) aerogels with antimicrobial activities and cushioning properties were developed to address these issues. The results showed that TEO achieved a 91.1 % encapsulation efficiency in HNTs and hydrogen bonding interactions were formed between TEO and HNTs. TEO@HNTs improved the crystallinity, thermal stability, compression properties, and surface hydrophobicity of the PGP aerogels. The TEO@HNTs-loaded aerogels exhibited a sustained release of TEO and antimicrobial activity against E. coli (inhibition zone of 13.92 mm), S. aureus (inhibition zone of 16.55 mm), and B. cinerea . Moreover, the aerogels offered good cushioning for blueberries when subjected to mechanical impact, thus maintaining their quality during storage. In addition, cell cytotoxicity analysis showed that cell viability exceeded 94 %, indicating the excellent biocompatibility of the TEO@HNTs-loaded aerogels. The above results suggested promising prospects for the development of a multifunctional aerogel to maintain the quality of food products, such as blueberries, which are susceptible to microbial contamination and mechanical damage.
