Biofouling of membrane surfaces by the attachment of microorganisms is one of the major obstacles for ensuring the effectiveness of membrane separation processes. This work presents the construction of a zwitterionic PVDF membrane surface with improved resistance to biofouling. An amphiphilic copolymer of poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-poly(N,N-dimethylamino-2-ethylmethacrylate) (PVDF-g-PDMAEMA) was first synthesized via radical graft copolymerization and then the flat membrane was cast with immersed phase inversion. The PDMAEMA side chains tended to aggregate on the membrane surface, pore surface and internal pore channel surface, and were converted with 1,3-propane sultone (1,3-PS) to yield a zwitterionic membrane surface. A higher conversion of PDMAEMA chains and distribution of zwitterions were obtained using a longer treatment time. A biofouling assay indicated that incorporation of zwitterions suppressed the adsorption of extracellar polymer substances and the adhesion of Escherichia coli bacterial cells to the membrane surface, endowing the membrane with a high flux recovery and biofouling resistance in the filtration process.

Polyvinylidene fluoride/lead zirconate titanate (PVDF/PZT) composite films have been prepared by direct ink writing and the effect of PZT content on crystallization behavior and electrical properties of film were systematically investigated. The composite films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Flourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The results show that, surface modified PZT powder (PZT@PDA) is successfully coated by polydopamine (PDA), resulting in a large number of polar groups that interact with the —CF 2 — groups in PVDF, inducing the generation of polar β phase due to hydrogen bonding formed in the interaction. The β phase content in composite film increases with increasing PZT@PDA content, up to 28.09% as with 5 wt.% PZT@PDA. PZT@PDA plays a role of nucleating agent to promote the generation of polar phases in the film and also acts as an impurity hindering the growth of nuclei to reduce crystallinity. Moreover, the presence of PZT@PDA in interfaces provides more sites for the occurrence of interfacial polarization and thus improving the electrical properties of films. The composite film with 5 wt.% PZT@PDA possesses the highest dielectric constant (8.61) and residual polarization value (0.6803 µC/cm 2 ).

Polymeric dielectrics have garnered significant interest worldwide due to their excellent comprehensive performance. However, developing polymeric dielectric films with high permittivity (εr) and breakdown strength (Eb) and low dielectric loss (tanδ) presents a huge challenge. In this study, amorphous aluminum oxide (Al2O3, AO) transition interfaces with nanoscale thickness were constructed between titanium oxide (TiO2, TO) nanosheets and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to manufacture composites (PVDF/TO@AO). TO@AO nanosheets showed favorable dispersion in the polymer-based composites. Improved permittivity, suppressed dielectric loss, and enhanced breakdown strength were achieved by introducing AO coating with intermediate permittivity onto TO nanosheets to build a transition interface. The transition interface efficiently depressed the mobility of the charge carrier and electric conduction of the PVDF/TO@AO composites. As a result, the PVDF-based composite with 1 wt% TO@AO showed superior comprehensive performance, including highεrof ~12.7, low tanδof ~0.017, and exceptionalEbof ~357 kV/mm. This strategy supplies a novel paradigm for the application of fabricating dielectric films with excellent comprehensive performance.

One of the most promising desalination techniques is photothermal membrane distillation (PhMD). The research focus of PhMD technology is material renewal and structural design. Herein, the CuMOF-PVDF photothermal membranes were designed for PhMD. Firstly, a combination of chemical plating and oxidation was used to generate Cu(OH) 2 nanowires (NWs) onto the PVDF membrane. Then, the ligands were chemically bonded with Cu(OH) 2 NWs to grow the photothermal layer formed by the CuMOF hierarchical structure (CMHS). Under sunlight irradiation, the light was trapped in the CMHS, amplifying absorption and conversion of light. The CuMOF-PVDF membrane with the match-like CMHS absorbed 88.6 % of the light, resulting in a surface temperature of 74.3 °C after 600s. Moreover, by reducing the evaporation enthalpy of water, the performance of the CuMOF photothermal layer was comprehensively improved, realizing a water evaporation rate of 1.55 kg‧m −2 ‧h −1 and a high photothermal conversion rate of 71.4 %. During the PVMD process, the feed solution in the CuMOF photothermal layer was fully heated and supplied to the vaporization area, weakening the temperature polarization. Consequently, the flux of the CuMOF-PVDF membrane was 3.07 kg‧m −2 ‧h −1 and a 99.9 % rejection rate, corresponding to an energy efficiency of 85.2 %. The CuMOF-PVDF membrane is an efficient tool for PhMD, helping to advance desalination technologies.

PVDF-based electrolytes are promising candidates for solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) due to their high safety, interface compatibility and electrochemical stability. However, the low ionic conductivity of PVDF and uncontrollable dendrite growth in the related SSLBs restrict their development and application. Herein, ferroelectric BiFeO3 is introduced into PVDF to improve its electrolyte performance. The developed PVDF-based composite electrolytes achieve a high ionic conductivity (1.39 × 10−4 S cm−1) and Li+ transference number (0.35). Benefitting from the introduced BiFeO3, the assembled Li symmetrical batteries exhibit good cycle performance and can steadily cycle for 2500 h at 0.1 mA cm−2, at 25 °C. Matched with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathodes, the assembled batteries show excellent long-term cycling stability with a capacity retention of 94% after 100 cycles at 0.1C and capacity retention of 89% after 400 cycles at 0.3C. The ferroelectric effect of BiFeO3 restrains the inhomogeneous electric field and adjusts the Li+ distribution at the electrolyte/electrode interface, achieving uniform Li deposition. The ferroelectric BiFeO3 powder facilitates the decomposition of lithium salts and regulates the chemical composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI).

Hybrid piezoelectric/triboelectric nanogenerators combine the merits of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), possessing enhanced electrical output and sensitivity. However, the structures of the majority of hybrid nanogenerators are rather complex in integrating both functions, limiting their practical application in wearable electronics. Herein, we propose to construct a piezoelectric/triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator (PT-NG) with a simple structure based on a composite film to simultaneously achieve the coupling of piezoelectric charge generation and triboelectrification with improved energy conversion efficiency. The composite film consists of electrospun PVDF nanofibers embedded in the surface of the PDMS film, which not only forms a rough nanomorphology on the surface of PDMS but also provides structural protection to the PVDF nanofibers by PDMS during compressive deformation. The results have shown that the PT-NG can generate much higher electrical outputs than individual TENG and PENG devices. The PT-NG devices exhibit a high level of mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency with superior performance in charging capacitors and functioning as self-powered wearable sensors for the detection of different signals from finger movement, the recognition of various gestures, and the monitoring of respiration. More importantly, the composite device possesses an impressive structure durability, maintaining its layered structure over 5000 testing cycles without noticing any obvious damage on the nanofibers or detachment between the layers. Our results have demonstrated that the combining of piezoelectric nanofibers and triboelectric substrate is an efficient way to fabricate highly efficient energy harvesting devices for intelligent identification and health monitoring.

Membrane materials are widely used in the treatment of oily wastewater. In this work, hybrid nanofibrous membranes of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polytetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HPF) were prepared by electrospinning and cured at high temperature. Subsequent hydrothermal treatment to grow Mg/Al-LDHs and polymerization of tannic acid (TA) on the surface yielded WPPLT membranes. SEM and EDS tests showed that the WPPLT membranes had a uniform compositional distribution. AFM tests showed that the hydrothermal and tannic acid treatments increased the roughness of the membranes and imparted a superhydrophilicity to the membranes. Separation tests of the emulsion showed that the separation efficiency was above 99 % with stable flux due to the fine pore size of the nanofiber membrane and the positive charge effect of the LDHs. Mechanical tensile tests showed that the tensile strength of the WPPLT membrane was 4.1 MPa, which was 89 % higher relative to the electrospinning membrane. Finally, the synergistic effect of LDHs and tannic acid under UV irradiation achieved more than 90 % degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB). The present work provides new insights to improve the mechanical properties of nanofiber membranes, which helps the membranes to be used in more complex environments and enhances the prospect of their application in oil and water pollution.

Graphical Nb/Al-doped LLZO nanofillers were prepared using electrostatic spinning to construct a PVDF-HFP-based bilayer composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs) membrane. The Li|CSE|LiFePO 4 cells achieve improved cycling and rate performance at room temperature. Composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs) combining the advantages of polymer and ceramic electrolytes, are regarded as highly promising candidates for solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs). However, selecting appropriate polymer and ceramic materials, along with an effective combination method, is crucial in determining the performance of CSEs. To address the challenges of lithium dendrite inhibition and compatibility with cathodes simultaneously, herein, we have constructed a bilayer CSE based on poly(vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP). Al/Nb co-doped Li 6.25 Al 0.25 La 3 Zr 1.75 Nb 0.25 O 12 (LALZNO) nanofibers prepared by an electrostatic spinning technique, are incorporated as fillers to create high-throughput Li + transport pathways and enhance the overall performance of the CSE. Furthermore, polypropylene carbonate is introduced on the anode side of the CSE to enhance the wettability of lithium metal/CSE interface, thus improving the stability of lithium upon cycling. On the cathode side, succinonitrile is added to inhibit the crystallization of PVDF-HFP and facilitate the fast Li + transport. Consequently, the Li||Li cells demonstrate stable plating-stripping performance at 0.1 mA cm −2 for >520 h. In addition, the Li||LiFePO 4 full cells show improved cycling and rate performance. This work validates the effectiveness of developing bilayer CSEs and showcases their potential application in SSLMBs.

Coupling photocatalysis with membrane separation technology becomes one pioneering method to solve the membrane fouling . In this study, Ag@SnS photocatalyst was synthesized and blended with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to fabricate Ag@SnS/PVDF composite membranes via non-solvent induce phase separation (NIPS) method. The results show that with the addition of Ag@SnS, water flux of Ag@SnS/PVDF hybrid membranes increases due to the enhanced membrane hydrophilicity and increased porosity. The optimal hybrid membrane (MAS-2) exhibits the rejection rate of 97.0 % and 95.4 % for BSA and HA accompanied with a water permeance of 578.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Moreover, MAS-2 membrane reveals excellent self-cleaning ability by photodegradation of HA on membrane surface , and its flux recovery rate (FRR) can achieve 91.7 % after UV irradiation and 95.8 % after 3 h natural sunlight irradiation via photocatalysis regeneration. The heterostructure of Ag@SnS can assist separation of photoinduced electrons and holes by transferring photoinduced electrons to Ag nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic activity. After three cycles, the FRR can still reach around 90.0 %, revealing its outstanding cleaning ability. Therefore, the Ag@SnS/PVDF membranes have a foreseeable potential in the field of water treatment due to its high flux performance, self-cleaning ability via photocatalysis process.

Solar-powered interface evaporation is considered a promising technology to obtain freshwater from non-potable water by using sustainable solar energy. However, research on combining the photocatalytic effect with solar interfacial evaporation technology to go for photothermal conversion materials with full solar spectrum utilization for photothermal and photodegradation capabilities is still scarce. Due to the unique optical properties of MXene, a novel MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 -based membrane with synergistic photothermal and photocatalytic effects was developed from the perspective of practical applications such as water purification, photodegradation of organic dyes and antibacterial properties. In this paper, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and carbon black (CB) were used as the substrate, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) were selected as the pore-forming agent for hydrophilic modification, and MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 serves as the photocatalyst. The prepared composite polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 ) with Schottky junction, possesses a rich pore structure, abundant water molecule transport channels, high light absorption ability, and low thermal conductivity, which lead to a good performance in solar interface evaporation, photodegradation and antibacterial. The superhydrophobicity and floatability of the nanosponges in water enable them to continuously pump water, which greatly promotes the dissolution of salt accumulation. With the help of porous nanosponges, PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 exhibits excellent evaporation stability and salt resistance under 1 kW m −2 solar irradiation, as well as photodegradation of organic dyes. In addition, the PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 membrane has the properties of self-buoyancy, electrical conductivity, and superior flexibility. Therefore, considering the simple preparation method and fine performances, the PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 mixed membrane has great application potential in the study of interface evaporation, photodegradation of organic dyes, and antibacterial properties.

Understanding the irreversible fouling mitigation performance of conductive membranes is crucial for engineering applications. In this study, the effectiveness of conductive membranes in mitigating the irreversible fouling caused by typical membrane pollutants and actual surface water was investigated. The results indicated that the conductive membranes had the greatest mitigating effect on irreversible fouling caused by humic substances and the weakest mitigating effect on that caused by proteins. The growth rates of irreversible membrane fouling over five-cycle filtration with conductive membranes were reduced by 58.6 % (humic acid), 42.3 % (sodium alginate), and 30 % (bovine serum albumin) compared to those without power. Moreover, conductive membranes exhibited a commendable irreversible fouling mitigation effect when treating real surface water. The irreversible fouling growth rate and resistance decreased by 41.6 % and 49.9 %, respectively, compared to those without power. Although the increase in the ionic strength of the feed water weakened the effectiveness of the conductive membranes in irreversible fouling mitigation, it was still significantly better than that without power.

CO 2 -responsive based separation membranes are attractive in the field of membrane separation, not only for their ability to modulate the pore size of the membrane in response to CO 2 stimulation, but also for their ability to facilitate the removal of contaminants from the membrane surface. However, the introduction of CO 2 -responsive polymers by simple blending often results in membranes that are not responsive enough to last. In this study, we synthesized a hooked triblock copolymer and used it as an additive to prepare CO 2 -responsive PVDF membranes. The modified membrane combines the advantages of the PVDF material with the CO 2 response of the triblock copolymer. It not only has good CO 2 responsiveness, but also removes organic contaminants from the membrane surface well. The water flux of the hybrid membranes is 4 to 11 times higher than that of pure PVDF membranes, indicating that the triblock copolymer also has some porogenic ability. Surprisingly, the static contact angle on the membrane surface increased from 67° to 86° with the increase of the triblock copolymer content in the PVDF membrane. This suggests that modified PVDF membranes have some potential in the field of switchable oil–water separation. Graphical
