Individual and Simultaneous Voltammetric Determination of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) Applying Amino Functionalized Fe3O4@Carbon Microspheres Modified Electrode

Fan Bai,Xinhao Zhang,Xinmei Hou,Huijuan Liu,Junhong Chen,Tao Yang

Amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @carbon microspheres (NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C) were prepared and the electrochemical sensor was constructed using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) to determine toxic heavy metals in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the structure and phase of NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE possesses large active area and excellent electron transfer. Under optimized electrochemical condition, Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) were determined using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE. The electrode through amino functionalization exhibits higher sensitivity and lower detection limit toward Cd(II) and Cu(II) due to the acid-base pairing interaction between the electron-rich −NH 2 ligand and the electron-deficient heavy metal ions. Compared with other similar results reported in the literature, the NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified electrode exhibits wider linear response range while with comparable lower detection limit. It also exhibits excellent stability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability.

Steel slag as a cost-effective adsorbent for synergic removal of collectors, Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions from flotation wastewaters

Lianghua Wang,Pingfeng Fu,Yanhong Ma,Xuejin Zhang,Yabao Zhang,Xiumin Yang

Flotation reagents and heavy metal ions always coexist in mineral flotation wastewaters, arousing serious environmental issues or having deleterious effects on mineral flotation. In this work, the steel slag was adopted as a cost-effective adsorbent to synergically remove butyl xanthate (BX), diethyl dithiocarbamate (DDTC), Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions. At the steel slag dosage of 12.0 g/L, Cu(II) and Pb(II) concentrations decreased from 4.0 mg/L to below 10.0 μg/L, and the removal of COD reached 54.33%. The removal efficiency of COD increased from 11.36% to 57.49% as Cu(II) and Pb(II) concentrations rose from 0 to 8.0 mg/L, revealing the promotion effects of metallic ions on collector adsorption. The maximum uptake capacity of steel slag reached 110.45 and 160.48 mg/g for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The collector adsorption capacity of steel slag increased nearly two magnitudes after modifying with the uptake of Cu(II) or Pb(II) ions. The SEM/EDS, XPS and FTIR analysis indicated that steel slag could be in-situ modified to generate copper or lead hydroxides and oxides during the removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions. Subsequently, these precipitates acted as reactive sites for chelating BX and DDTC to form indissolvable metal-collector chelates. Owing to in-situ modification of steel slag by uptaking metallic ions, the adsorption was potentially feasible for treating flotation wastewaters.

Dual-mode colorimetric electrochemical aptamer sensor based on Au@Pd bimetallic nanoparticles for the detection of Pb(II) in edible mushrooms

Guo Qi,Yin Jiaqi,Zhang Yuhao,Wang Yue,Zhai Hongguo,Yan Luting,Tian Meijia,Guo Yemin,Sun Xia,Zhang Yanyan

Pb(II) can accumulate in the body and gradually cause irreversible harm. In this work, a dual-mode colorimetric biosensor based on an aptamer was developed as an effective method for sensitive sensing of Pb(II). The aptamers were immobilized on silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) by Ag–S bonding to increase the active sites on the electrode surface. Gold–palladium bimetallic nanoparticles (Au@Pd NPs) can not only serve as signal indicators but also play a role as nanozymes. On the one hand, Au@Pd NPs were modified on the aptamer to improve the conductivity of the sensor for the detection of Pb(II) by the electrochemical method of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). On the other hand, Au@Pd NPs were porous nanomaterials with numerous active sites on their surface that can catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in solution to generate O 2 , so that 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was oxidized to blue oxTMB, enabling the visual prediction of Pb(II). At the same time, with the property that 8–17 deoxyribozyme and metal ions can co-catalyze, it promoted the binding of Au@Pd NPs functionalized aptamer to the electrode in the presence of Pb(II) and enhanced the electrochemical signal. Under optimal conditions, the detection range of Pb(II) was 1—1000 nmol L −1 , and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.4 nmol L −1 . The biosensor has been successfully applied to the detection of edible mushroom samples. Graphical abstract

Simultaneous removal of As(V) and Pb(II) using highly-efficient modified dehydrated biochar made from banana peel via hydrothermal synthesis

Varney Edwin Johnson,Qi Liao,Bob Wisdom Jallawide,Richmond Anaman,Charles Amanze,Peicheng Huang,Wei Cao,Chunlian Ding,Yan Shi

Efficient removal of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) from industrial wastewater has long been a critical environmental issue due to their serious risk to human health. Therefore, in this work, a modified banana peel biochar (MBPB) was prepared by mixing calcium nitrate , diammonium hydrogen phosphate , sulfuric acid, ferric nitrate with dehydrated banana peel biochar as adsorbent for As(V) and Pb(II) removal in wastewater, and their absorption mechanism was investigated. SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR , XRD , XPS , BET, kinetic, and isothermal characteristics of MBPB and pristine banana peel biochar (PBPB) were conducted. The behavior of both metal ions on MBPB and PBPB was well explained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic with Langmuir and Freundlich models. We found that the two biochar’s behaviors were mixture processes of monolayer and multilayer adsorption , achieving maximum capacities as determined by the Langmuir model of 39.5 mg g −1 (MBPB-As), 33.2 mg g −1 (MBPB-Pb), 30.8 mg g −1 (PBPB-Pb), and 23.5 mg g −1 (PBPB-As), with maximum efficiencies of 98.7% (MBPB-As) and 90.3% (MBPB-Pb) under optimum conditions. Thermodynamic tests showed that As(V) and Pb(II) removal on MBPB was a spontaneous and endothermic physisorption process. MBPB showed great reusability in As(V) and Pb(II) removal, with removal rates as high as 71.4% and 66.5% after five cycles, respectively. Selective adsorption of As(V) and Pb(II) was also investigated on MBPB, and the removal rate was still high in the mixture of heavy metals. These findings provide a feasible method for the environmental-benign utilization of banana peel as a low-priced adsorbent in wastewater treatment .

Highly-efficient removal of Pb (II) from water by mesoporous amino functionalized silica aerogels: Experimental, DFT investigations and Life Cycle Assessment

Yaoyao Zhang,Luca Magagnin,Kangze Yuan,Zhengwen Wei,Xishe Wu,Zhenyi Jiang,Wei Wang

Mesoporous amino functionalized silica aerogels (MASA-X) with high adsorption capacity were prepared at ambient pressure conditions for removal of Pb (II) ions from water. Supported by SEM images and FTIR spectra, the presence of –NH 2 groups and porous structures on the surface of MASA-X were demonstrated, which played a critical role in promoting the interfacial adsorption process . The adsorption isotherm fitted well by Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption occurred on a homogeneous surface and the maximum adsorption capacity of MASA-1, MASA-2, MASA-3, MASA-4 were 444.4 mg/g, 628.93 mg/g, 549.45 mg/g and 286.53 mg/g, respectively, and MASA-2 demonstrated optimal adsorption performance. The kinetic data showed good correlation coefficient with the pseudo-second order kinetic model, and the adsorption equilibrium of MASA-1, MASA-2, MASA-3, MASA-4 were reached in 120 min, 60 min, 20 min and 20 min, respectively. And raising temperature facilitated the adsorption of Pb (II) as it was a spontaneous and endothermic process. It was noteworthy that MASA-2 showed satisfactory reusability after eight adsorption-desorption cycles. FTIR, XPS coupled with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the involvement of monodentate N atoms in the coordination with Pb (II) on adsorption of Pb (II) by MASA-2. The environmental impact of the MASA-2 preparation process was calculated through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and by analyzing the contribution of each material in the production of MASA-2, a more environmentally friendly and effective production strategy has been finally proposed, which could facilitate the promotion of MASA-X adsorbents in the heavy metal contaminated water market.

A novel metal-organic framework-derived ZnO@ZIF-8 adsorbent with high efficiency for Pb (II) from solution: Performance and mechanisms

Jian Liu,Yingbi Chen,Yuting Hu,Yiting Zhang,Gengwei Zhang,Shixing Wang,Libo Zhang

A metal-organic framework (ZnO@ZIF-8) with great adsorption potential was developed using ZnO nanoparticles as a surface-active center and applied to lead removal from wastewater. The adsorption experiments were carried out and the related adsorption behaviors were investigated. The adsorbent shows excellent adsorption performance between pH 3–5. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZnO@ZIF-8 for Pb (II) was 689.36 mg/g at 303 K. The adsorptive process of Pb (II) onto ZnO@ZIF-8 conforms to the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Thermodynamics illustrate that the adsorption process is chemical adsorption on a uniform surface. Selectivity experiments showed that ZnO@ZIF-8 had the strongest affinity with Pb (II). The adsorption-desorption cycle confirmed that ZnO@ZIF-8 was a reliable and recyclable adsorbent. XPS, Zeta potential and FT-IR analysis illustrate that the adsorption of Pb (II) by ZnO@ZIF-8 was concentrated in electrostatic adsorption and chelation. DFT calculation indicated that there are different types of Pb (II) combination mode (Pb-N and Pb-O) and the adsorption mainly depended on the chelation. This study presented herein played important roles in the governance of heavy metal waste-water pollution as a result of ZnO@ZIF-8 can effective selectivity cleanup of Pb (II).

Remarkable ability of Pb(II) capture from water by self-assembled metal-phenolic networks prepared with tannic acid and ferric ions

Hui Qiu,Wenxiang Ni,Luyang Yang,Qingrui Zhang

Plant-derived chelators used for heavy metal removal have attracted increasing attention because of their low cost, strong coordination effect, and environmentally benign features. Herein, natural polyphenol-based adsorbents (i.e., TA-Fe 7 and TA-Fe 12 ) were prepared using tannic acid (TA) and ferric ions through simple cross-linking self-assembly reactions with pH 7 and 12, respectively. Adsorption isotherms demonstrated that TA-Fe 12 showed better adsorption ability towards Pb(II) than TA-Fe 7 with a maximum adsorption capacity of 356.1 mg·g −1 at 298 K. Our evaluation of the adsorption affinity indicated that the distribution coefficient K d of TA-Fe 12 for Pb(II) was apparently higher than that of the other cations, revealing the excellent adsorptive selectivity of TA-Fe 12 towards Pb(II). The remarkable adsorption capacity of TA-Fe 12 can be attributed to the strong coordination between Pb(II) and phenolic hydroxyl groups, ester groups of TA as well as the specific adsorption of Pb(II) on the newly formed hydrous ferric oxides (HFO), demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Batch cyclic experiments indicated that TA-Fe 12 could be employed for repeated use after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. Fixed-bed tests indicated that the TA-Fe 12 column could produce clean water with bed volumes of 9500 and 7860 ([Pb] < 1 mg·L −1 ) from synthetic Pb(II)-polluted wastewater and simulated electroplating wastewater, which were significantly higher than those of other commercial adsorbents.

Adenosine-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 to efficiently remove Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution: Thermodynamics, kinetics and isothermal adsorption

Hao Wang,Shuai Wang,Shixing Wang,Jiali Tang,Yingbi Chen,Libo Zhang

A new zirconium-based adsorption material (UiO-66-AMP) was prepared by modifying UiO-66-NH 2 with 5-adenosine to effectively remove Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater. The SEM, EDS, XRS and FT-IR characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of UiO-66-AMP. We conducted a sets of experiments to test the adsorption effectiveness of UiO-66-AMP for Pb(II) and Cr(VI). The maximum adsorption capacity of UiO-66-AMP for Cr(VI) (pH=2) and Pb(II) (pH=4) are 196.60 and 189.69 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, which indicates that the adsorption is a single-layer chemical process. Gibbs free energy ( ∆G) indicates that the adsorption of Pb(II) is an exothermic reaction , while the adsorption of Cr(VI) is an endothermic reaction . At the same time, the adsorbent maintains excellent adsorption capacity at least after 4 cycles. The good adsorption performance of UiO-66-AMP towards the metal ions was attributed to the surface complexation and electrostatic interactions. Therefore, the new adsorbent has obvious application prospect to remove Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Phosphate modified hydrochars produced via phytic acid-assisted hydrothermal carbonization for efficient removal of U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Xin Zhao,Meng Li,Fuqiang Zhai,Yanling Hou,Rui Hu

Phosphate species can complex with nuclides and heavy metals from aqueous solutions strongly. The introduction of phosphate groups onto the surface of biochar sorbents (mostly <1.0 at.% of P) is highly desired. In this study, phosphate modified hydrochars (HTBs) were prepared through the hydrothermal carbonization of bamboo sawdust with various duration (2, 12, 24 h) in the presence of phytic acid (0–70 wt%). The results showed that the addition of PA with a low concentration of 10 wt% carbonized at 2 h generated hydrogen protons to etch the pristine sawdust, inducing the granulation of surfaces and a 5.5-fold enhancement of surface area. While HTBs carbonized with increasing PA concentrations (30–70 wt%) and longer duration (12 and 24 h) presented more carbonaceous particles with rising sizes from <100 nm to 2.5 μm, which should be due to the cross-linkage of dehydrated phosphate-containing organic carbon components to the matrix, enabling the resultful surface modification (maximum of 2.1 wt% of P). The uptake of U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II) on HTBs was investigated given various geochemical conditions including contact time, pH, ionic strength , humic acid and temperature. HTBs could capture U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II) efficiently from the ideal and simulated wastewaters, and be reused well after six recycles. This work opened a new strategy for the potential of phosphate-hydrochars in the aqueous remediation.

A simple electrochemical sensor based on rGO/MoS2/CS modified GCE for highly sensitive detection of Pb(II) in tobacco leaves

Chuanen Guo,Chengxiang Wang,Hongyan Sun,Dongmei Dai,Hongtao Gao

High-performance electrode modification materials play a crucial role in improving the sensitivity of sensor detection in electrochemical determination of heavy metals. In this study, a rGO/MoS2/CS nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was used to construct a sensitive sensor for detecting lead ions in tobacco leaves. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used to increase the conductivity of the sensor, and the nano-flowered MoS2 could provide a large reaction specific surface area and a certain active site for heavy metal reaction. Chitosan (CS) was used to improve the enrichment ability of heavy metals and increase the electrocatalytic activity of electrode. Thus, an electrochemical sensor with excellent performance in reproducibility, stability and anti-interference ability was established. The stripping behavior of Pb(II) and the application conditions of the sensor were studied by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The investigation indicated that the sensor exhibited high detection sensitivity in the range of 0.005–0.05–2.0 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.0016 μM. This work can provide a fast and effective method for determination of Pb(II) in samples with low content, such as tobacco leaves.

Green-synthesized nanosize Mont-supported Fe0 via tea extract for enhanced transport and in situ remediation of Pb(II) in soil

Yang Han,Ye Zhi,Feng Fang,Xu Nan,Yang Jing,Yao Zihan,Li Zuling,Chen Jianping

Purpose Lead (Pb(II)) can be accumulated in soil and transferred to humans via the food chain. Therefore, it is essential to improve Pb(II) immobilization during soil remediation. Materials and methods Nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI) from green tea extract (tea polyphenols, TPs) was successfully synthesized as an additive reductant. Further, the nZVI was supported on montmorillonite (Mont), resulting in a GT-nZVI@Mont composite characterized by multiple techniques, including Zeta potential, SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS. Moreover, the transport experiments and the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) were conducted to identify the optimum conditions (i.e., GT-nZVI@Mont dosage, Pb(II) concentration, and pH) for the remediation. Results and discussion The experimental results showed that the enhanced transportability of GT-nZVI@Mont was about 40% more than that of GT-nZVI. Meanwhile, Pb(II) immobilization was increased at various pH values (especially under anoxic conditions). The Pb(II) immobilization capacity of GT-nZVI@Mont was 900.8 mg∙g -1 (per unit of Fe content), which was significantly higher than 530.1 mg∙g -1 per unit of Fe content in GT-nZVI. Such enhancement could be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the wrapped TP around the Fe 0 core and the Mont interlayer support, capable of protecting the Fe 0 surface from further oxidation. When GT-nZVI@Mont reacted with the Pb(II) in soil, TPs’ unwrapped coverage increased the reaction sites of Fe 0 cores for Pb(II) reduction and adsorption. Conclusions GT-nZVI@Mont with sufficient transportability provided efficient in situ remediation of Pb(II) in contaminated soil at a wide pH range.

Carboxymethylcellulose-chitosan film modified magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution

Wang Yingya,Zhang Hanbing,Yaseen Muhammad,Tong Zhangfa,Chen Ninghua,Shi Huazhen

In order to endow alkaline Ca-bentonite (ACB) with magnetic separation ability, simultaneously obtain better magnetic stability and stronger removal capacity of heavy metal cations; magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite/carboxymethylcellulose-chitosan film (MACB/C-C) was prepared by organic modification of magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite (MACB) using non-toxic carboxymethylcellulose and chitosan. Textural characterization results revealed that magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on ACB and modified with C-C. The functionalized layer of C-C concurrently enhanced the stability of Fe 3 O 4 and removal performances of heavy metal cations. Adsorption results indicated that MACB/C-C exhibited thorough separation from aqueous solution and greater uptake ability for Pb(II) and Cd(II) (483 mg·g −1 and 123 mg·g −1 ) than the nascent MACB (335 mg·g −1 and 76 mg·g −1 ), respectively, at pH 5 and 25 °C temperature. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on MACB/C-C mainly occurred via surface precipitation and complexation when pH > 2. MACB/C-C could be efficiently recycled with marginal decrease in adsorption capacity. The current approach credited to the convenient operation, simplified synthesis, and high efficiency of MACB/C-C could be deemed as a promising alternative for the removal of heavy metal cations from wastewater.
