Pomegranate-like MnO2@PANI sub-microspheres: Synthesis and application for Pb(II) ions removal from water

Can Cui,Xiaohuan Sun,Chuanqiang Zhou,Yingwei Liu,Huixin Xiong,Yanan Li,Jie Han

Pomegranate-like MnO 2 @polyaniline (PANI) sub-microspheres have been designed and successfully synthesized as a novel and highly effective sorbent material to remove heavy metal ions from water. Herein, pomegranate-like SiO 2 @PANI spheres were firstly fabricated by performing the oxidation polymerization of aniline in silica colloidal solution, followed by the removal of SiO 2 and in situ redox reaction between KMnO 4 and PANI . Compared with the mono-component PANI and MnO 2 materials, the obtained pomegranate-like MnO 2 @PANI sub-microspheres exhibited superior adsorption ability towards Pb(II) ions due to the synergistic effect. Influencing factors, including pH, Pb(II) ions concentration, adsorbents content and other ions on the Pb(II) ion sorption onto the MnO 2 @PANI hybrid were systematically studied. The sorption isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamic properties of the hybrids for Pb(II) ions adsorption were reflected by different models. Moreover, the adsorption ability of pomegranate-like MnO 2 @PANI sub-microspheres towards other heavy metal ions was also explored. This work would provide new insight on the design of hierarchical inorganic/organic nanosorbent.

EDTA-functionalized magnetic chitosan oligosaccharide and carboxymethyl cellulose nanocomposite: Synthesis, characterization, and Pb(II) adsorption performance

Zhenwei Lian,Yanfeng Li,Hongyi Xian,Xiao-kun Ouyang,Yuqing Lu,Xiaowu Peng,Dalin Hu

A novel ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-functionalized magnetic chitosan oligosaccharide and carboxymethyl cellulose (Fe 3 O 4 @CMCCOS-EDTA) nanocomposite adsorbent was successfully fabricated for Pb(II) adsorption. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to confirm successful EDTA modification and Pb(II) adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , vibrating sample magnetometer, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to study the morphology and properties of magnetic particles. EDTA modification considerably improved the capacity of the adsorbent. The batch adsorption experiment results indicated that the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model and the Langmuir isotherm model reliably described the adsorption behavior. The maximum adsorption capacity ( q m ) for monolayer chemical adsorption was calculated to be 432.34 mg/g at the pH of 5 and temperature of 308 K. Notably, Fe 3 O 4 @CMCCOS-EDTA exhibited a high Pb(II) removal rate of ~100% using an initial metal ion solution of 100 mg/L and 200 mg/L.

Capture effect of Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr by intercalation-exfoliation modified montmorillonite during coal combustion

Zeyu Xue,Lu Dong,Zhaoping Zhong,Xudong Lai,Yaji Huang

Raw montmorillonite (MMT) was modified by intercalation-exfoliation method to improve the capture capacity of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cr and Cd) during coal combustion . Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Brunner-Emmett-Teller (BET) indicated that intercalation agents cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) could be successfully inserted into the interlayer of MMT during the intercalation step, additionally exfoliation process could peel off the MMT into fine flakes. The co-combustion of coal and MMTs was conducted in a tube furnace from 900 to 1300 °C. Results indicated that with the increase of temperature, the retention ratio of Pb, Zn and Cd gradually decreased, especially higher than 1200 °C with a great capture capacity reduction, whereas for Cr, it rose first and then decreased. The capture performance of modified MMT on Pb, Zn and Cr was obviously improved. However, for Cd, adverse effect was observed, of which the capacity was even worse than that of raw MMT in some cases. According to the mechanism analysis, the intercalation-exfoliation modification of MMT primarily enhances the chemisorption of heavy metals by exposing more active sites, which facilitates the fixation of heavy metals in the form of aluminosilicates .

Wood vinegar enhances humic acid-based remediation material to solidify Pb(II) for metal-contaminated soil

Zhu Junfeng,Gao Weichun,Zhao Wentian,Ge Lei,Zhu Ting,Zhang Guanghua,Niu Yuhua

Heavy metal lead is a typical widespread potentially toxic element (PET) contamination due to their extensive and wide applications in industrial processes. The development of cost-effective methods for preventing potentially toxic element lead residues from soil into food is thus highly desirable. A new type of humic acid-based remediation material (HA/WV) incorporating humic acid salt (HA), biochar powder (BC), and wood vinegar (WV), which is a cheap and environmentally friendly industrial by-product from charcoal processing, was prepared and evaluated. The results showed that 0.10 g remediation material HA/WV with a mass ratio of 1:1 was added to 1 kg surface soil of 0–20 cm from agricultural land contaminated by 300 mg Pb 2+ , the reduction ratio of available Pb in soil can reach 61.4%. Especially, wood vinegar can enhance the reduction ratio of available Pb by at least 14.7% over without wood vinegar. Furthermore, according to the analysis of adsorption interaction and the electrostatic attraction between Pb(II) and oxygen-containing functional groups on HA/WV are the dominant mechanisms responsible for Pb(II) sorption. The wood vinegar liquid can improve the oxygen-containing group in HA/WV, which can enhance the complexation of remediation materials and Pb(II) ion.

Photoelectric effect driving PANI/PB multicolor visualized detection of CEA based on Ag2S NPs@ZnO NTs

Yu Wang,Qin Lei,Wanxin Dong,Xinxin Mo,He Li

In this work, a multicolor visual immunoassay platform was developed. The photoelectric effects of Ag 2 S NPs@ZnO NTs made the color changes of PANI/PB, which enabled visual inspection of CEA. Under the visible light excitation, Ag 2 S NPs@ZnO NTs generates electron-holes. Where, photoelectrons will pass electrical circuit to PB and photoinduced holes will oxidize PANI, which making the PANI/PB composite changes from emerald green-blue-purple-black colors. When CEA was incubated, the migration rate of photogenerated carriers is slowed down owing to the steric hindrance , resulting in different color changes of PANI/PB. In addition, the average green channel of PANI/PB read by photoshop has a certain correlated linear relationship with the concentration of CEA. Meanwhile, we can observe the color transformation of PANI/PB with our own eyes. By integrating advantages of photoelectrochemistry and colorimetry , the linear range of CEA detection was 0.1–20 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 0.05 ng/mL (S/N = 3). More importantly, this multicolor sensing method is very convenient, simple and low-cost. The photocarriers-modulated colorimetric strategy also provides a novel idea for visual portable platform design in clinical diagnosis.

Hypercrosslinked functionalized lignosulfonates prepared via Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction for enhancing Pb(Ⅱ) removal from aqueous

Dailian Zhu,Cunqi Qin,Shanshi Ao,Mei Wang,Minghua Wu,Yaohong lü,Kemei Pei,Huagang Ni,Peng Ye

Hypercrosslinked functionalized lignosulfonates (CLS) were prepared by Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction. The structure of CLS without introducing any functional groups and the according adsorption behaviors of Pb(II) were characterized and studied, respectively. Due to increase of specific surface area and abundance exposure of binding sites, the maximum adsorption capacity of CLS was found to be as high as 74.45 mg/g, which was about seven times that of raw lignin. The results provide a new feasible synthesis method for preparing lignin-based materials with porous structures and promising application for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

In situ generated Pb nanoclusters on basic lead carbonate ultrathin nanoplates as an effective heterogeneous catalyst

Xiaoli Yu,Qi Diao,Xiaokai Zhang,Yong-Ill Lee,Hong-Guo Liu

Hexagonal ultrathin nanoplates of basic lead carbonates were synthesized in aqueous lead acetate solution under ambient conditions. The sizes of the nanoplates were found to reach several hundreds of nanometers to micrometers, whereas the plate thickness was only several nanometers, corresponding to 3, 4, or 5 stacking layers along the c-axis. These nanoplates exhibited effective catalytic properties for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes, such as nitrobenzene, 4-nitroaniline, and 4-nitrophenol, and other organic dyes, such as methylene blue and methyl orange in aqueous solutions in the presence of KBH4. Pb nanoclusters were generated in situ during the catalytic process and were well dispersed on the surface of the nanoplates, leading to the formation of a zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterostructure. It was also found that the heterostructure exhibited different catalytic behaviors for the hydrogenation of the compounds mentioned above due to the different molecular structures and different adsorption and desorption abilities of the reactants and products. Such a heterostructure can be also anticipated to be an effective photocatalyst due to its strong UV-light absorption, the ultrathin characteristics of the highly crystalline nanoplates and the transfer abilities of the Pb nanoparticles.

Adsorptive removal of Pb(II) by magnetic activated carbon incorporated with amino groups from aqueous solutions

Ruiqi Fu,Yu Liu,Zimo Lou,Zhuoxing Wang,Shams Ali Baig,Xinhua Xu

A novel adsorbent (AC/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 ) was synthesized via a co-condensation process for the enhanced removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. Characterization analyses including SEM, TEM, BET and XRD confirmed the successful integration of magnetic nanoparticles and amino groups with carbon matrix. Results demonstrated that AC/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 (mass ratio of AC to Fe 3 O 4 was 1:0.25) with specific surface area (48.9   m 2 /g) showed higher adsorption capacity for Pb(II) as compared to other mass ratios. Kinetics study revealed that the adsorption reach equilibrium within 20   h and the maximum adsorption capacity of 104.2   mg/g was achieved with increasing the initial concentration from 20 to 250   mg/L using AC/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 . Maximum removal efficiency was recorded at pH 5.2 and the removal capacities toward four divalent metal ions calculated by the Langmuir model were found to be in the order of Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Cd(II). Furthermore, Δ G 0 decreased from –1.6 to −3.1   kJ/mol with increase in temperature from 293 to 333   K illustrating that the adsorption was spontaneous and an endothermic process. Complexation adsorption mechanism was found prominent in FTIR and XPS analyses between Pb(II) and AC/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 due to the presence of amino groups.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from fish sauce using carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal: Isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

Nan Wang,Ru-Na Jin,A.M. Omer,Xiao-kun Ouyang

In the present study, a new adsorbent based on carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal (CCN) was developed for the adsorption of Pb(II) from fish sauce. The prepared adsorbent material was characterized by zeta potential, FT-IR, XRD, and XPS tools. The changes in the morphological structure of the developed CCN surface were evidenced by SEM and TEM. The favorable adsorption conditions were selected by studying the contact time, initial concentration, temperature, and concentration of the used glutamic acid and NaCl. The results indicated that the Langmuir isotherm model agrees very well with experimental adsorption data ( R 2   =   0.9962) with a maximum adsorption capacity 232.56   mg/g of Pb(II) at 293.2   K. Additionally, data of the adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order kinetics ( R 2   >   0.9990). On the other hand, the thermodynamics studies show that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the developed CCN could be regenerated using acid treatment with a good reusability for Pb(II) adsorption. The results clearly indicated that the synthesized CCN could be effectively applied as a new material for Pb(II) adsorption from fish sauce solutions.

Magnetic ion-imprinted and –SH functionalized polymer for selective removal of Pb(II) from aqueous samples

Bin Guo,Fang Deng,Yu Zhao,Xubiao Luo,Shenglian Luo,Chaktong Au

A magnetic ion-imprinted polymer (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP) functionalized with –SH groups for the selective removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous samples was synthesized by surface imprinting technique combined with a sol–gel process using 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane as monomer, tetraethyl orthosilicate as cross-linking agent, and Pb(II) ion as template. The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometry. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP showed higher capacity and selectivity than that of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NIP. The effects of initial concentration of Pb(II) and pH of medium on adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP were studied. The experimental data fits well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum Pb(II)-sorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm is 32.58   mg/g and 16.50   mg/g for Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NIP, respectively. Kinetics studies show that the adsorption process obeys a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with high correlation coefficient ( R 2   =   0.9982). The separation factor of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP for Pb(II)/Cu(II), Pb(II)/Zn(II), and Pb(II)/Co(II) are 50.54, 52.14, and 37.39, respectively. The adsorption thermodynamic parameters Δ G , Δ H and Δ S were −4.98   kJ/mol, 3.27   kJ/mol and 28.84   J/mol/K, respectively. In addition, the spent Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP can be refreshed by simple washing with aqueous HCl solution, and there is no significant decrease in adsorption capacity after a test of up to five cycles, demonstrating that the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP is stable and reusable.

Flexible X-ray radiation protection membrane PVA/pb(NO3)2 microcapsule composites supported by bacterial cellulose

Lian Tang,Yi Zheng,Shiyan Chen,Lei Wang,Huaping Wang

Flexible and nonpoisonous X-ray-shielding membranes supported by bacterial cellulose (BC) were prepared, in which X-ray-shielding materials were of microcapsule structure by using polyvinyl alcohol as shell and lead salt as core. The effect of the wall/core interaction and the amount of cross-linking agent were taken into consideration to find the optimal reaction conditions. The morphology, microcapsule size, and lead salt release properties were investigated. After supported by BC, the flexible and potable membranes for X-ray radiation protection were prepared and the shielding properties were evaluated, which indicated a good X-ray-shielding material. We set up a new method to prepare flexible and portable X-ray radiation protection membranes. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 43120.

Flexible Narrow Bandgap Sn–Pb Perovskite Solar Cells with 21% Efficiency Using N,N′-Carbonyldiimidazole Treatments

Jixi Zeng,Jing Wang,Jinzhao Wang,Jia Li,Jiwen Chen,Feng Wei,Jing Zhang,Weijie Song,Xi Fan

Flexible tin–lead (Sn–Pb) mixed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are among the promising flexible photovoltaics, owing to the narrow bandgap (NBG) of Sn–Pb perovskites, flexible and wearable features, and their role as a critical component in all-perovskite tandem photovoltaics. However, the flexible Sn–Pb PSCs suffer from a low power conversion efficiency, no higher than 18.5%, along with limited stability. Herein, we reported an efficient and stable flexible NBG Sn–Pb PSC via an N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) passivation strategy. CDI, with strong adsorption energy, preferentially binds to Sn2+ compared with oxygen (O2), thus effectively inhibiting the adsorption of O2 on perovskite surfaces. The transfer of electron density around Sn2+ dramatically decreased, thus suppressing Sn2+ oxidation. The CDI treatments endowed the Sn–Pb mixed films with fewer defects, improved crystallinity, better morphology, and matched energy-level alignment. The flexible Sn–Pb devices exhibited a high PCE of 21.02%. Besides, the devices showed enhanced stability and promoted flexibility. This work provides a pathway to visibly increase the efficiency and stability of the flexible Sn–Pb mixed photovoltaic cells.
