Protein self-assembly has attracted extensive interest in the field of biomaterials and biomedicine due to its inherent biocompatibility and flexible designability. In this paper, we propose a potential route to generate a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform through Sn-triggered protein self-assembly. Specifically, Sn2+ ion was used to trigger the self-assembly of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form in situ Sn/BSA film on the indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. Then, a CdS thin film as a PEC active material was electrodeposited on the Sn/BSA modified ITO electrode. The hybrid Sn/BSA film was demonstrated to stabilize the PEC response of the CdS. A dual-electrode PEC cell comprised a graphene oxide (GO)-modified photocathode and a Sn/BSA hybrid film/CdS-loaded photoanode. Pb2+-response deoxyribozymes (DNAzymes) were hybridized with the substrate strands tagged with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) and then immobilized on the photocathode. Upon Pb2+-induced cleavage, Au NP-linked oligonucleotide fragment dislocated from the photocathode surface, resulting in a decrease in the PEC response. The present PEC biosensor showed highly sensitive detection of Pb2+ with a wide detection range from 10.0 fM to 0.1 μM and a low detection limit of 4.0 fM. This work demonstrates that the Sn/BSA hybrid film has potential application prospects in PEC sensing, thereby providing a new way of thinking for the design and development of the bioinspired biosensor.

Driven by the urgent demand for ultrasensitive detection of trace lead (Ⅱ) ions (Pb 2+ ), we developed a novel electrochemical sensor based on oxygen vacancy-engineered NiCo 2 O 4 (NCO) nanorods anchored on coconut shell-derived porous biochar (BC). The BC/NCO composite was prepared via a synergistic NaHCO 3 -assisted one-step carbonization activation and hydrothermal metal oxide doping strategy, which simultaneously introduced abundant oxygen vacancies and optimized the heterostructure interface. The unique rod-like morphology of NCO, coupled with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on BC, creates synergistic adsorption-catalytic sites for Pb 2+ . The BC/NCO-modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) demonstrate exceptional sensitivity (24.90 µA·µM −1 ), outperforming bare GCE (0.60 µA·µM −1 ), BC-modified GCE (7.92 µA·µM −1 ), and NCO-modified GCE (4.90 µA·µM −1 ) by 42.03-fold, 3.14-fold, and 5.08-fold, respectively. This performance is attributed to oxygen vacancy-mediated electron transfer acceleration, redox pair interactions (Co 2+ /Co 3+ , Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ ), and enhanced Pb 2+ adsorption via complexation and pore confinement. The sensor achieves an ultralow detection limit of 0.004 µM (S/N = 3) and maintains robust anti-interference performance against common coexisting interferences (Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ , Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ , As 3+ , Cr 6+ , catechol, hydroquinone, resorcinol), with 98.3 −106.5 % recovery in real water samples. This work not only advances the design of eco-friendly sensing platforms through defect engineering and biomass valorization but also demonstrates high practicality for on-site heavy metal monitoring.

Lead ion (Pb 2+ ) is a highly toxic heavy metal with strong bioaccumulation potential, posing serious risks to environmental and food safety. In this work, we developed a dual-trigger enhanced catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) strategy for rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection of Pb 2+ using a GR–5 DNAzyme-mediated cascade reaction. A dumbbell-shaped hairpin probe was designed to form a dimeric complex through complementary palindrome sequences of H1, with its loop region containing a ribonucleotide adenosine (rA) site. In the presence of Pb 2+ , the GR–5 DNAzyme catalyzed cleavage at the rA site, generating a new dimeric complex that efficiently initiated the CHA reaction. This dual-trigger design significantly accelerated the CHA process through the localized high-concentration trigger sequence. Consequently, an intact G-quadruplex sequence was exposed, which produced a distinct colorimetric signal. The biosensor enables accurate quantification of Pb 2+ over the linear range of 0.5–100 nM, with a detection limit as low as 51.25 pM. Spiked recovery rates in drinking water and fish samples range from 96.61 % to 109.77 %, demonstrating the biosensor's accuracy and practical applicability. These results highlight the potential of this biosensor for real-time monitoring of Pb 2+ contamination in environmental and food samples, contributing to improved public health and safety.

To increase the adsorption capacity of the Corylus heterophylla Fisch(HS) for Pb 2+ , HS was chemically modified using NaOH aqueous solution and 95% ethanol and was labeled as SHS; then SHS was chemically modified using mercaptoacetic acid. The SHS modified with mercaptoacetic acid(MHS) was characterized using FTIR, SEM, and XPS. The results indicated that the —SH group was present on MHS, and after Pb 2+ adsorption, the absorption value of the characteristic peak of the —SH group decreased. The adsorption and desorption properties of this functionalized material were investigated as well as the influences of parameters, such as pH value, type of desorption reagent, dosage, flow rate and maximum sample volume. The Pb 2+ adsorption of MHS reached a maximum with pH>5. The experimental data of Pb 2+ adsorption using MHS were fitted using the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, and a maximum adsorption capacity of 61.54 mg/g was obtained. This was much higher than the adsorption capacity of SHS before modification with the thiol group. After adsorption, MHS was desorbed using a 0.2 mol/L HCl solution, and the percent of desorption was higher than 99%. MHS was used as a solid-phase extractant in the analysis and determination of Pb 2+ content in food and water samples, and the enrichment times achieved 150-fold.

The K-CP/MnO 2 composite was prepared by loading manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanosheets onto potassium hydroxide (KOH) activated carbonized polyaniline (K-CP) via low-temperature hydrothermal reaction. The composite demonstrated high efficiency in removing Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ in the hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) technology. K-CP/MnO 2 presents a core-shell structure with conductive K-CP as the core and electrochemically active MnO 2 constructed by porous nanosheets as the shell. The disordered entanglement of K-CP and MnO 2 nanoflakes significantly increases the interlayer spacing, optimizes the pore distribution, creates favorable conditions for charge and ion transport, and realizes the synergistic effect of electric double layer (EDL) adsorption and Faradaic reactions. The specific capacitance (SC) of K-CP/MnO 2 at 5 mV s −1 is 112.03 F g −1 , which is nearly 3.76 times that of CP (29.82 F g −1 ). At a voltage of 1.2 V (100 mg L −1 ), the electrosorption capacity (SAC) of the K-CP/MnO 2 electrode for Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ is 124.66 and 96.86 mg g −1 , respectively. After 15 adsorption/desorption cycles in the HCDI device, the adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ is retained at 86.81% and 82.59%, respectively. The experiments indicate that the removal of Pb 2+ primarily occurs through electrosorption, redox reactions, and surface complexation, while Zn 2+ is inserted into the channel provided by MnO 2 and participates in the solid phase reaction. The K-CP/MnO 2 composite prepared in this study offers a novel approach for designing high-performance HCDI electrodes and achieving the selective removal of heavy metals.

Lead ion (Pb 2+ ) contamination poses severe threats to food safety and human health, demanding rapid, sensitive, and reliable on-site analytical detection techniques. Herein, a colorimetric-electrochemical dual-mode aptasensor was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of Pb 2+ in rice, utilizing a dual-signal amplification strategy integrating bismuth terephthalate material (BiBDC)-AuNPs nanozyme and RecJf exonuclease (RecJf Exo)-assisted target recycling. BiBDC uniformly disperses and immobilizes AuNPs, significantly enhancing their peroxidase-like catalytic activity for robust signal output. Meanwhile, RecJf Exo specifically hydrolyzes Pb 2+ -bound aptamer strands to achieve cyclic release and reuse of target Pb 2+ , effectively amplifying the response signal. Under optimal conditions, the dual-mode aptasensor exhibited low detection limits of 4.52 pg/mL (colorimetric) and 0.035 pg/mL (electrochemical). The developed sensor demonstrated excellent specificity, reproducibility, stability, and satisfactory recoveries (93.54–102%) in real rice samples. This dual-signal amplification strategy provides a reliable platform for highly sensitive and accurate detection of Pb 2+ in food matrices, showing great potential for food safety monitoring.

First application of Cu 3 (BTC) 2 -based composite as a photoelectrochemical platform for trace-level lead ion detection. • Synergistic integration of DNAzyme amplification and exciton-plasmon interaction for enhanced sensitivity. • A Weighted Least Squares (WLS)-based calibration framework to minimize matrix effects, ensuring reproducible and reliable outcomes. The accurate monitoring of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) in complex environmental matrices demands ultrasensitive and robust sensing technologies. Herein, we engineer a DNAzyme-driven “signal-on” photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on a precisely controlled layer-by-layer self-assembled TiO 2 /Cu 3 (BTC) 2 hierarchical architecture. By exploiting the spatial precision of this architecture, we position Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) in optimal proximity to the Cu 3 (BTC) 2 framework to facilitate efficient exciton-plasmon interaction (EPI)-mediated photocurrent quenching. Target Pb 2+ triggers the specific cleavage of substrate DNA (sDNA), detaching the Au/PAMAM-hairpin DNA conjugates, thereby restoring the photocurrent proportionally to Pb 2+ concentration. This self-assembled platform achieves exceptional sensitivity with a broad linear range (10 −12 to 10 −6 mol/L) and an ultralow detection limit of 0.97 pM. Crucially, to mitigate heteroscedasticity and matrix interference, a weighted least squares (WLS) calibration model is integrated, which assigns higher statistical weights to low-concentration measurements, significantly enhancing quantitative reliability. The sensor demonstrates satisfactory recoveries in real water samples, establishing a standardized and robust paradigm for trace heavy metal monitoring. This study develops a DNAzyme-driven signal-on PEC aptasensor for trace Pb 2+ detection. A novel Cu 3 (BTC) 2 composite serves as the first PEC substrate for this application. It enhances charge separation efficiency. The sensor synergistically integrates exciton-plasmon interaction with DNAzyme amplification for dual signal enhancement. A WLS-based calibration framework is also incorporated. It standardizes signal processing, mitigates matrix effects, and ensures reproducible quantification in real water samples. Water quality is increasingly threatened by metal contamination, posing serious risks to ecosystems and human health. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) offers rapid, multi-element detection for monitoring contaminated water, but its sensitivity and stability are limited by matrix effects and inefficient energy coupling, making ppb-level detection challenging. In this study, a microstructured electrode coupled with electrochemical deposition enrichment for LIBS detection (ME-ED-LIBS) was developed, prepared by nanosecond laser etching on copper. Under applied electric fields, Pb 2+ and Cr 3+ ions were directionally deposited on the microstructured electrodes. Quantitative analysis showed that, compared with planar electrodes, microstructured electrodes increased the Cr I 425.43 nm and Pb I 405.78 nm line intensities by 1.5–5 times while reducing the relative standard deviation from 12% to below 5%. Limits of detection decreased from 10.59 to 1.34 ng/mL for Cr and from 215.75 to 26.11 ng/mL for Pb, improving sensitivity approximately 8 times, with average relative errors dropping to 1.23% and 1.18%, far below the 7.04% and 18.10% for planar electrodes. Electrochemical deposition simulations using a tertiary current distribution phase-field model revealed a closed-loop coupling mechanism: field enhancement drives directed deposition, induces morphology reconstruction, and further amplifies the field, optimizing enrichment pathways and interfacial selectivity. This approach enables precise ng/mL (ppb-level) quantification of metal contaminants, providing a sensitive, reliable technique for water quality monitoring.

Herein, a porous conductive network is constructed utilizing carbon nanocoils (CNCs) featuring a spatial helical structure. By integrating the continuous wet chemical method with an annealing process, cobalt-based composites derived from ZIF-67 are uniformly dispersed within this three-dimensional network. Three-dimensional carbonaceous nanomaterials represent a promising platform for the detection of heavy metal ions (HMIs). For simultaneous detection, the sensitivities for Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ were 9.816 and 13.950 µA µM −1 , respectively. The limit of detections for Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ were determined to be 1.11 and 0.93 nM, respectively. Using one-dimensional carbon nanotubes and two-dimensional reduced graphene oxide as the control group, it is evident that CNCs possess not only abundant micropores, which provide a wealth of active sites for charge accumulation in electrode materials, but also exhibit spatially ordered porosity. This structure includes macropores that serve as “warehouses” for electrolyte ions and mesopores that facilitate rapid electrolyte ion transfer. Furthermore, by integrating the proposed electrode with machine learning techniques, the classification accuracy can be significantly improved, achieving precision rates of 100 % and 92.86 %. This study proposes an effective strategy and introduces an innovative platform for developing electrochemical sensors designed to detect HMIs at trace levels.

Heavy metals pose a significant threat to ecosystems and human health due to their toxicity and persistence. In this work, we developed a high-performance electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ using a cost-effective pencil graphite electrode (PGE) modified with alkalized Ti 3 C 2 MXene (alk-MXene/PGE). Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were utilized to examine the electrochemical characteristics of different PGEs. Studies revealed that the optimal PGE for subsequent application was the one with HB hardness and a diameter of 2 mm. Compared with bare PGE and Ti 3 C 2 MXene modified PGE, alk-MXene/PGE exhibited enhanced electrical conductivity and optimized electrochemical performance, enabling sensitive and simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in a single run. Linear relationships were achieved for Cd 2+ in the range of 5.0 × 10 −4 ∼ 7.0 × 10 −2 mg/L and for Pb 2+ in the range of 2.0 × 10 −4 ∼ 8.0 × 10 −2 mg/L, with detection limits of 8.10 × 10 −6 mg/L and 9.12 × 10 −6 mg/L, respectively. The developed electrochemical sensor was successfully applied to scallop samples, demonstrating its good practicability. This study underscores the potential of alkalized Ti 3 C 2 MXene-modified PGEs in electrochemical sensing of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ simultaneously, paving new avenues for food quality monitoring and environmental analysis.

A cost-effective and environmentally friendly composite hydrogel for the adsorption of Cd 2+ was fabricated by combining sodium alginate with lotus carbon dots (SA@lotus CDs). The impact of many factors, including doping amount, dose, pH, initial solution concentration, adsorption period, and temperature, on the process of Cd 2+ adsorption was studied. The adsorption isotherm was fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model with high accuracy (R 2 = 0.9604). The adsorption kinetics conformed to the Pseudo-Second-Order kinetic model, demonstrating a high coefficient of determination (R 2 = 0.9238). The Langmuir model predicted that the adsorbent had adsorption capacity of 179.35 mg/g for Cd 2+ . After undergoing five cycles, the SA@lotus CDs continued to exhibit a removal effectiveness of 85.1 %. The SA@lotus CDs hydrogel composite was also used for the removal of Pb 2+ by 291.23 mg/g. The adsorption capability of the hydrogel was improved due to the addition of CDs. Pb 2+ was adsorbed by SA beads at 275.5 mg/g, while SA@lotus CDs had a slight increase to 291.23 mg/g (5.7 %). However, there was a 40.2 % increase in Cd 2+ adsorption from 127.89 mg/g by SA beads to 179.35 mg/g by SA@lotus CDs beads. The results of the adsorption tests showed the different removal efficiency of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ by SA@lotus CDs. These findings suggested that SA@lotus CDs were more effective for removing Cd 2+ than Pb 2+ . The interaction mechanism between materials and metal ions was studied by using density functional theory. The interactions between CDs sites or SA sites and metal ions were calculated respectively. The results showed that the adsorption energy of CDs sites for metal ions was Cd 2+ < Cu 2+ < Pb 2+ < Fe 2+ < Co 2+ < Mg 2+ , while the adsorption energy of SA for Pb 2+ was much lower than that for Cd 2+ . Therefore, the affinity order of SA@lotus CDs for metal ions was Pb 2+ > Cd 2+ > Cu 2+ > Fe 2+ > Co 2+ > Mg 2+ , which was consistent with the experimental results.
