Directional electron transfer in ZnIn₂S₄/Mo₂TiC₂-Ru for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Qing Xi,Huimin Yan,Fangxia Xie,Rui Li,Jianxin Liu,Caimei Fan,Zhixin Jin,Hongwei Wang

A directional photogenerated electron transfer channel from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru was formed in ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru. • The interface electronic delocalization effect between Ru nanoclusters and Mo 2 TiC 2 synergistically optimizes the water dissociation and hydrogen evolution sites. • ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity under both visible light and natural light conditions. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) rate on ZnIn 2 S 4 is severely limited by the low utilization of photogenerated electrons and the sluggish reaction kinetics. Driving the directional transfer of photogenerated electrons to the target site is crucial for enhancing the electron utilization efficiency and the PHE performance. Herein, this study rationally designed a ternary composite photocatalyst ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , in which Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C serves as an electron acceptor and efficient active site. The in-situ KPFM and Mott-Schottky results indicate that the establishment of interfacial electron transport channel accelerates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the strong metal-support interaction (EMSI) and interfacial electron delocalization of Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , which synergistically optimize the water dissociation at Ru nanocluster and the hydrogen evolution desorption at the Mo 2 TiC 2 terminal, promoting the efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons. Therefore, ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C achieved a PHE rate of 6.15 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light, and demonstrated excellent potential for PHE application under natural light. This study provides a new paradigm for integrating electron transfer dynamics with active site engineering to improve the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process. Metal-support interaction of Ru nanoparticle and NiCo2O4 support for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Xiaoyun Zhang,Benyong Gao,Tao Qin,Jinlong Ma,YiXue Xu,Lili Song,Muxin Liu

Spherical Ru-NiCo 2 O 4  synthesized by hydrothermal-calcination formed Ru-O-Co/Ni bonds to enhance metal-support interaction. • The nanowire-assembled ball-like structure exposed abundant active sites and accelerated mass transfer. • Metal-support interaction effect optimized electronic structure, downshifted d-band center, and regulated intermediate adsorption. • Ru-NiCo 2 O 4  exhibited outstanding OER activity with an overpotential of 217 mV at 10mA/cm² and durable stability over 70 h. Hydrogen production by water electrolysis is a promising approach for renewable energy conversion, yet its efficiency is severely restricted by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Ru-based catalysts exhibit outstanding OER activity but suffer from poor stability and high cost. Constructing metal-support interaction (MSI) is an effective strategy to optimize the electronic structure and stability of Ru catalysts. Herein, fluffy spherical Ru anchored on NiCo 2 O 4 was fabricated via hydrothermal and calcination processes, in which Ru O Co/Ni bridge bonds were formed to strengthen the MSI effect between Ru nanoparticle and NiCo 2 O 4 support. The unique nanowire-assembled ball-like structure exposed abundant active sites and accelerated mass transfer. The MSI effect regulated the electronic structure, derived directional interfacial electron transfer, downshifted the d-band center, and optimized intermediate adsorption for OER. The synthesized Ru-NiCo 2 O 4 catalyst exhibited an overpotential of 217 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 and a long-term stability of 70 h.

Accelerated Deprotonation Triggered by the Se–Ru–O Asymmetric Configuration Enables Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Feng Xinlian,Zhu Ting,Wu YuChi,Ji Shumin,Ji Yadong,Yu Zhongwei,Zhang Nan,Yin Shuhu,Xu Jun

Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts toward the acidic oxygen evolution reaction is crucial for the advancement of renewable hydrogen energy technologies. Ruthenium dioxide stands out as one of the most promising acidic OER catalysts. However, the unsatisfactory stability of RuO 2 and the sluggish proton-coupled electron transfer kinetics of OER hinder its practical application. Herein, we introduce Se doping to form a Se–Ru–O asymmetric configuration into RuO 2 to tailor electron redistribution and achieve both high activity and stability. The obtained Se-RuO 2 shows superior electrocatalytic activity with a small overpotential of 212 mV at 10 mA cm –2 and a long durability of 230 h. Electrochemical tests and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that Se-RuO 2 exhibits enhanced deprotonation kinetics and optimized adsorption energy of reaction intermediates, thereby boosting OER activity. Morever, the electronic interactions mediated by the asymmetric Se–Ru–O bond diminish the covalency of Ru–O bonds and thus boost the stability of RuO 2 . This work offers a facile strategy for the development of high-performance catalysts incorporated with nonmetallic elements.

Volcano Trend between the Size of Ru Nanocatalysts and Hydrogenation Activity for Levulinic Acid

Xu Cuiwei,Jia Jinjie,Ouyang Sufang,Wu Jianguo,Li Xin,Liu Xiaolei,Qian Jun,Cao Dong,Cheng Daojian

Regulating the size of the active metal is crucial to change the electronic structure and catalytic activity. Here, five Ru/CN-ZrO 2 catalysts with different sizes are precisely constructed via a two-step wet chemical synthesis method. Remarkably, a volcano trend between the size of Ru and hydrogenation activity for levulinic acid (LA) is disclosed. The Ru nanoclusters with an average size of ∼2.7 nm (Ru/CN-ZrO 2 -2) exhibit the highest catalytic activity for LA hydrogenation, achieving an LA conversion of 99.4% and a γ-valerolactone (GVL) selectivity of 99.3%. Besides, the corresponding turnover frequency (TOF) is 4860.1 h –1 , which far surpasses that most reported for Ru-based catalysts. Mechanism studies reveal Ru/CN-ZrO 2 -2 with moderate size is beneficial to enhance the interaction between Ru and support, directly promoting the adsorption of LA, and thereby exhibiting the lowest activation energy. This work emphasizes the size effect to improve the catalytic activity, which is an important guidance for the rational design of hydrogenation catalysts.

In-situ constructed Ru–RuOx heterointerface driving lysine decarboxylation via hydrogenation–decarbonylation tandem catalysis

Bowen Chen,Zhen Ma,Wenqian Xiao,Jiahao Wang,Chun Chang,Renfeng Nie,Jie Fu,Chunbao Charles Xu

Diamine synthesis from amino acids offers an economical and green route to high-value nylon monomers, yet developing highly efficient and stable catalysts remains challenging. This study developed a RuO x /TiO 2 catalyst that in-situ forms a Ru-RuO x heterointerface during the reaction, in which excellent 1,5-pentanediamine (PDA) yield (up to 69.8%) and productivity (63.5 h −1 ) for converting L-lysine achieved under 200 °C and 2 MPa H 2 , significantly outperforming other Ru-based catalysts supported on various carriers. Characterizations revealed that the strong RuO x -TiO 2 interaction suppresses partial reduction of RuO x , forming a Ru-RuO x interface—where Ru activates and dissociates H 2 while hydrogenating carboxyl groups to aldehydes, and RuO x catalyzes alcohol dehydrogenation, ultimately leading to PDA via aldehyde decarbonylation. Crucially, an optimal Ru-RuO x ratio is key to achieving both high yield and reaction rate. This work provides a novel strategy for developing catalysts for bio-based nylon monomers.

Enhancing Ammonia Synthesis over Ru-Based Catalysts via Engineering of Rare-Earth Oxide Supports

Xiaohu Hu,Linkun Chen,Kailin Su,Fei Wang,Weiying He,Yanliang Zhou,Xiuyun Wang,Lilong Jiang

Rare-earth oxide-supported Ru metal catalysts are promising for NH3 synthesis owing to a strong metal–support interaction. Modifying rare-earth oxides with a second metal offers an effective approach to tuning support properties, while systematic support engineering to enhance NH3 synthesis performance remains scarce. In this work, a series of Ru/Ce1–aLaaOx catalysts with varying Ce-to-La molar ratios were synthesized and evaluated for NH3 synthesis. The NH3 synthesis rate of Ru/Ce1–aLaaOx exhibits a volcano relationship with an increase in the La content. The optimal Ru/Ce0.7La0.3Ox catalyst exhibits a remarkable NH3 synthesis rate of 34.13 mmolNH3 gcat–1 h–1 with over 500 h long-term stability at 400 °C and 1 MPa, which is 1.65-fold that of Ru/CeO2. Various characterizations reveal that La doping is beneficial to increase the charge density of Ru sites via facilitation of oxygen vacancy formation, which consequently ensures fast N2 cleavage. In addition, the La doping can avoid hydrogen poisoning more effectively through enhanced hydrogen spillover, which together with promoted N2 activation are responsible for high-performance NH3 synthesis over Ru/Ce0.7La0.3Ox catalyst under mild conditions.

Boosting Hydrogenation via NIR-Light-Controlled Metal-Support Interactions over Structurally Modulated Ru/TiO2

Jingyao Fan,Xiaoyan Yin,Yujie Hao,Bo Cai,Yang Lv,Zechang Wei,Dalei Wang,Hong Lei,Jianchun Jiang,Kui Wang

Abstract The modulation of metal–support interaction (MSI) could provide exciting catalytic performance for the heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, we report a novel and fast strategy to controllably modulate the physicochemical structure of supports through NIR laser irradiation and then reconstruct the interface between the metal site and support. The abundant oxygen vacancies, tunable anatase-rutile phases, and unique surface properties of TiO2 supports can be formed by laser irradiation in 3 s. It is worth mentioning that the structure and properties of TiO2 supports can be controllably modulated by controlling the intensity of laser irradiation, thereby tuning the MSI between active Ru sites and TiO2 supports to promote the catalytic performance of Ru/TiO2 catalysts. Specifically, the optimized interfacial activity of the Ru/TiO2 catalyst would exhibit excellent electron/mass transfer, which facilitates the adsorption and activation of H-donor (alcohols) and ethyl levulinate (EL), thereby improving the EL catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) to γ-valerolactone (GVL), achieving 95% GVL yield, 96% EL conversion, and 99.0% GVL selectivity under mild conditions (150 °C, 12 h, 2-PrOH as H-donor). This research provides an innovative approach for fast modulation of support to tune the MSI, thus enhancing the catalytic activity of catalysts.

A layered lead halide framework intercalated with Ru(bpy)3 for efficient CO2 photoreduction

Jiang Yilin,Xi Ruonan,Yin Jinlin,Sun Chen,Li Yukong,Wu Chao,Zhang Chi,Fei Honghan

Three-dimensional lead halide hybrids exhibit excellent photophysical properties but suffer from inherent instability. In contrast, two-dimensional layered lead halides offer enhanced environmental stability, yet their strongly bound excitons restrict efficient charge transport. Here we present a covalent intercalation strategy involving the benchmark photosensitizer [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ into a layered lead halide framework, featuring cationic [Pb 23 X 42 ] 4+ (X −  = Cl − or Br − ) layers pillared by [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ ligands via Pb 2+ -carboxylate coordination. This hybrid material achieves nearly full visible-light absorption and efficient photoinduced charge transfer from [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ to the lead halide layers. This affords efficient CO 2 -to-CO photoreduction with an apparent quantum efficiency of ~3.0% at 500 nm, exceeding the performance of all previously reported organolead halide photocatalysts. Mechanistic studies indicate that the [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ ligands enhance charge transport to Pb 2+ sites, facilitating CO 2 activation and reducing the reaction barrier for the *COOH intermediate. This work establishes a paradigm for intercalation chemistry in robust layered lead halide hybrids.

Shi Wei Ru Xiang pill alleviates acute gouty arthritis through suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activation

Na Wang,Puchen Zhao,Qin Yin,Lizi Li,Haiqi Xu,Can Yang,Yanbei Tu,Yanfang Li

Introduction: Shi Wei Ru Xiang pill (SWR) is commonly utilized in Tibetan medicine as a therapeutic intervention for “Huang-shui disease” and has been clinically validated as an effective treatment for acute gouty arthritis (AGA). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of action and the active components of SWR in combating AGA remain unclear. Methods: In this study, the effects of SWR and its active components on AGA and NLRP3 inflammasome activation were investigated in monosodium urate (MSU)-induced AGA rats and lipopolysaccharide/nigericin-induced THP-1 cells. The chemical profile of SWR was characterized using UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS.Results: The results indicated that SWR effectively suppressed pyroptosis, caspase-1 activity, and IL-1β production in THP-1 cells. Furthermore, SWR significantly suppressed NLRP3 inflammasome activation and attenuated ankle swelling in a rat AGA model. Specifically, SWR affected the priming and assembly phases to inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Surprisingly, SWR showed good liver and renal protective effects in AGA rats. A total of 58 compounds were identified in SWR by UPLC-MS analysis. Further pharmacological studies demonstrated that the phenolic compounds serve as active compounds responsible for the inhibition of inflammasome activation, including dehydrocostus lactone, gallic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid.Discussion: This is the first study to comprehensively elucidate the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of SWR against AGA by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation. This study strongly indicated that SWR could serve as a promising anti-inflammatory medicine with an acceptable safety profile for the treatment of AGA and other inflammatory disorders linked to NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Interface engineering of RuO2/Ru–Co3O4 heterostructures for high-efficiency oxygen evolution in acid

Yixuan Yuan,Chang Liu,Shanshan Liu,Ruimin Ding,Xi Yin

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) powered by renewable electricity is a promising technology for green hydrogen production. Ru-based catalysts are a cost-effective alternative to Ir-based counterparts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet achieving balanced activity and stability remains challenging. In this study, we optimize the performance of RuO2 by constructing RuO2/Ru–Co3O4 heterogeneous interfaces. Our results indicate that RuO2/Ru–Co3O4 catalyst pyrolyzed at lower temperatures exhibits uniformly small particle sizes with abundant heterointerfaces and strong interfacial electronic interactions. Elevated pyrolysis temperatures enlarge catalyst particle sizes, simultaneously decreasing heterointerfaces and weakening the interfacial interactions. In rotating disk electrode experiments, the mass activity of the RuO2/Ru–Co3O4 catalysts is significantly improved compared to the commercial RuO2. This improvement is attributed to the heterogeneous interfaces, which offer greater utilization of active sites and enhanced charge transfer capabilities. Furthermore, the mass activity of the RuO2/Ru–Co3O4 catalysts decreases with increasing pyrolysis temperatures due to the reduction in heterogeneous interfaces. Additionally, the stability of the RuO2/Ru–Co3O4 catalysts is notably superior to that of commercial RuO2, owing to the interfacial electronic interactions. However, this stability is negatively impacted by higher pyrolysis temperatures as the interfacial electronic interactions weaken. In preliminary membrane electrode assembly tests, the RuO2/Ru–Co3O4 catalyst with low Ru loading shows higher activity than commercial RuO2. Further triple-phase boundary optimization of the catalyst layer is needed. These findings contribute to advanced RuO2-based catalyst design for PEMWE.

Cu dopants as electron buffers for stabilizing Ru-based active layers for hydrogen evolution

Xinyu Wang,Tongtong Liu,Jingjing Wang,Bowen Xia,Yanfei Wang,Zhilin Li,Zhengping Zhang,Feng Wang

There is an urgent need for development of efficient and long-term stable catalytic electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) to enable economically competitive hydrogen energy production. In this work, a facile air pyrolysis treatment is used to fabricate RuO2 coatings on a Ti substrate (RuO2/TF), and the surface state of the active coatings during HER was investigated. It was observed that the original RuO2 surface transforms into a partially reduced form composed of mixed valence states (0/+4). Although the newly-formed surface has higher activity than RuO2, the Ru state and current efficiency fluctuate with the electrolysis conditions, and the HER activity will be limited by the final reduced state (i.e., Ru0). To stabilize and improve the active Ru surface, Cu, which experiences a polyvalence change around the HER potential, is doped into the RuO2 coating as an electron buffer. This modification with Cu electron buffers results in an active Ru surface that exhibits stable chemical states with excellent activity, rapid responsivity, and excellent stability under the fluctuating operation conditions of alkali electrolyzers. The AWE system with optimized RCO/TF as cathodes exhibits a lower voltage (2.07 V) and higher current efficiency (95.25%) at a current density of 1 A cm−2 than RuO2/TF (2.40 V, 80.97%). This study unveils the origin of the activity of Ru coatings for HER and proposes an approach to composition design for other multicomponent electrodes and electrochemical applications.

Efficient Generation of Lactic Acid from Glycerol over a Ru-Zn-CuI/Hydroxyapatite Catalyst

Zhiwei Jiang,Zhanrong Zhang,Tianbin Wu,Pei Zhang,Jinliang Song,Chao Xie,Buxing Han

Graphical Adding value : A Ru-Zn-Cu I catalyst supported on hydroxyapatite (HAP) was applied for the conversion of glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct, to lactic acid (see scheme). Cu I inhibits C−C bond cleavage and thus improved the yield of lactic acid in this system. The biodiesel production process generates a significant amount of glycerol as a byproduct. A drive to add value has attracted worldwide attention, with the aim of improving the overall effectiveness and profitability of biodiesel production. Herein, we report hydroxyapatite (HAP)-supported Ru-Zn-Cu I (Ru-Zn-Cu I /HAP) as effective catalysts for the transformation of glycerol to lactic acid (LA).The catalysts were characterized by using different techniques. The effects of catalyst composition, reaction time, and temperature on the conversion and product distribution were investigated. It was revealed that Ru nanoparticles of less than 2 nm were dispersed uniformly on HAP. Cu I could effectively inhibit the cleavage of C−C bonds, which led to improved yields of LA. Under optimized conditions, the yield of LA could reach 70.9 % over Ru-Zn-Cu I /HAP. Furthermore, the catalyst could be reused at least four times without an obvious loss of activity or selectivity.
