A Low-Cost Al(OH)3-Modified Fire-Retardant and Shuttle-Limiting Separator for Safe and Stable Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Junhua Zhou,Chi Zhang,Chuan Xie,Huimin Wang,Haining Fan,Yanpeng Guo,Chao Wang,Fan Chen,Yichun Ding,Qiyao Huang,Zijian Zheng

Lithium–sulfur battery (LSB) possesses high theoretical energy density, but its poor cycling stability and safety issues significantly restrict progress in practical applications. Herein, a low-cost and simple Al(OH) 3 -based modification of commercial separator, which renders the battery outstanding fire-retardant and stable cycling, is reported. The modification is carried out by a simple blade coating of an ultrathin composite layer, mainly consisting of Al(OH) 3 nanoparticles and conductive carbon, on the cathode side of the separator. The Al(OH) 3 shows strong chemical absorption ability toward Lewis-based polysulfides and outstanding fire retardance through a self-decomposition mechanism under high heat, while the conductive carbon material acts as a top current collector to prevent dead polysulfide. LSB using the Al(OH) 3 -modified separator shows an extremely low average capacity decade per cycle during 1000 cycles at 2 C (0.029%, 1 C = 1600 mA g −1 ). The pouch cell exhibiting high energy density (426 Wh kg −1 ) can also steadily cycle for more than 100 cycles with high capacity retention (70.2% at 0.1 C). The effectiveness and accessibility of this Al(OH) 3 modification strategy will hasten the practical application progress of LSBs.

Enabling an Intrinsically Safe and High-Energy-Density 4.5 V-Class Lithium-Ion Battery with Synergistically Incorporated Fast Ion Conductors

Lifan Wang,Guicheng Liu,Rui Xu,Xindong Wang,Liguang Wang,Zhenpeng Yao,Chun Zhan,Jun Lu

The Ni-rich layered oxide cathode is pushing the frontier of battery powered electric vehicles toward longer driving range and lower cost, whilst facing a major challenge with the compromised cycle life and thermal robustness. It is well recognized that irreversible oxygen evolution at the cathode-electrolyte interphase is critical to the electrochemical and thermal stability of the Ni-rich cathode. Herein, combining experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the authors focus on manipulating the irreversible oxygen evolution to solve the performance degradation and safety hazard. An oxygen ion conductor introduced to the surface of the cathode restrains the activated surficial lattice oxygen ions by its stable oxygen vacancies. Meanwhile, a Li-rich fast ion conductor incorporated in the coating layer synergistically reinforces the Li diffusion path through the cathode-electrolyte interphase. This sophisticated multifunctional surficial modification implemented by a neat one-step treatment represents a successful design and development of a thermally stable Ni-rich cathode and approximately 400-cycle state-of-health up to 80% with the operating voltage range extended up to 4.5 V. Therefore, this study provides an encouraging strategy to overcome the capacity versus robustness dilemma of high-energy cathodes.

Fluoride species conversion-enhanced selective extraction: A green and safe strategy for fluorine recovery in wet-process phosphoric acid production

Long Yao,Guixuan Shan,Abrar Laiba,Yu Zhao,Yujiao Zhang,Ru’an Chi,Bingwen Long,Wei Li,Jinli Zhang

Fluorine (F) is a valuable by-product in wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) production, yet its recovery ratio remains below 60 % due to challenges in purification and utilization. Traditional stripping methods release toxic and corrosive fluorine vapors, endangering production safety. Herein, a novel strategy of Fluoride Species Conversion-Enhanced Selective Extraction (FSC-SE) was put forward for the efficient and environmentally friendly recovery of fluorine from wet process phosphoric acid (WPA). By converting HF and H 2 SiF 6 into HBF 4 through the addition of boric acid, the extraction efficiency of fluorine is significantly enhanced, reaching up to 99.8 % using trioctylamine (TOA) as the extractant. Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide a predictive framework for the extraction selectivity of TOA for different acidic species. Key operation parameters, including B:F molar ratio, TOA concentration, extraction time, and temperature, etc, are, optimized to further enhance the process performance. Subsequent water washing and back-extraction steps enabled effective P-F separation and extractant regeneration. Applied to industrial WPA, the single-stage fluorine extraction efficiency can reach 82.4 %, and the total fluorine recovery ratio can reach 80.4 %. FSC-SE provides a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly method with strong industrial application potential, highlighting the value of the green separation process combining chemical conversion and solvent extraction in the phosphoric acid industry.

Three-Dimensional Porous Alginate Fiber Membrane Reinforced PEO-Based Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Safe and High-Performance Lithium Ion Batteries

Fanyou Zeng,Yuanyuan Sun,Bin Hui,Yanzhi Xia,Yihui Zou,Xiaoli Zhang,Dongjiang Yang

The rational design and optimization of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are critical for the application of safety and high efficiency lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we synthesized a novel poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based SPE (PEO@AF SPE) with a cross-linking network by the introduction of alginate fiber (AF) membranes. Depending on the high-strength supporting AF skeleton and the cross-linking network formed by hydrogen bonds between the PEO matrix and AF skeleton, the obtained PEO@AF SPE exhibits an excellent tensile strength of 3.71 MPa, favorable heat resistance (close to 120 °C), and wide electrochemical stability window (5.2 V vs Li/Li+). Meanwhile, the abundant oxygen-containing groups in alginate macromolecular and the three-dimensional (3D) porous structure of the AF membrane can greatly increase Li+ anchor points and provide more Li+ migration pathways, leading to the enhancement of Li+ conduction and interfacial stability between the SPE and Li anode. Furthermore, the assembled LiFePO4/PEO@AF SPE/Li cells also exhibit satisfactory electrochemical performance. These results reveal that PEO incorporating with AFs can boost the mechanical strength, thermostability, and electrochemical properties of the SPE simultaneously. Furthermore, one will expect that the newly designed PEO@AF SPE with cross-linked networks thus provides the possibility for future applications of safety and high-performance LIBs.

High-Performance Flame-Retardant Polyphosphate ester-based Solid Electrolyte via In-situ Ring-Opening Polymerization for Safe Li Metal Batteries

Linyuan Cui,Xinkai Zou,Chengliang Wang,Huiyu Zhao,Hairui Chen,Qiming Xu,Xuehong Sun,Jingjiang Sun,Qingfu Wang

Conventional flammable liquid electrolytes compromise the safety of lithium metal batteries. We address this via the molecular design and in-situ catalyst-free ring-opening polymerization of a trifluoromethyl-functionalized polyphosphoester, yielding a cross-linked solid polymer electrolyte (TFMPE). The deliberate incorporation of phosphate, ether, and carbonate units with -CF3 side groups imparts intrinsic flame retardancy (from P/F) and governs ion transport. The resulting TFMPE membrane exhibits a balanced suite of properties: high ionic conductivity (3.7×10-4 S cm-1), a wide electrochemical window (4.9 V), and a high Li+ transference number (0.51), which promotes uniform Li+ flux and improves interfacial stability. Moreover, in-situ polymerization forms a seamless electrode/electrolyte interface, suppresses Li dendrite growth, and enables stable Li||Li cycling for 2000 h. Full cells using LiFePO4, LiMnFePO4, and LiCoO2 cathodes also show excellent cycling stability.

High-strength, thermal-insulating, fire-safe bio-based organic lightweight aerogel based on 3D network construction of natural tubular fibers

Yue Xu,Chentao Yan,Chunlin Du,Kai Xu,Yixuan Li,Miaojun Xu,Serge Bourbigot,Gaelle Fontaine,Bin Li,Lubin Liu

Petrochemical-based foam materials are extensively used in insulation and energy storage fields. However, their non-degradability and high flammability have caused great pressure on energy, environment and human life and property safety. It is urgent to carry out research on biodegradable and fire safety alternative biomaterials. Herein, inspired by the natural hollow insulation animal hair, the 3D network structure of tubular aerogel was constructed by using the hollow kapok fibers (KF), the binder polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and the flame retardant crosslinker biguanide phosphonate (BGP). The multifunctional tubular aerogel integrating thermal insulation , high strength and fire safety was successfully prepared by freeze-forming and freeze-drying. Due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and the high viscosity of binder, KF maintained a high filling, full component and high value utilization. Compared to pure KF, the thermal conductivity of KF-PVA-BGP aerogel was reduced to 0.0531 W m −1 K −1 and its compressive strength was improved to 1.64 MPa. Meanwhile, the incorporation of flame retardant cross-linker BGP promoted the degradation and charring of KF-PVA aerogel and released lots of inert gases during decomposition process , which effectively exerted the flame retardant effect in condensed and gas phases. Besides, compared with commercial PS insulation boards , KF-PVA-BGP composites are recyclable, sustainable and biodegradable in addition to their excellent thermal insulation and fire safety performance. This KF-PVA-BGP aerogel showed good application prospects for replacing traditional petrochemical-based materials in thermal insulation, energy storage and new energy fields.

Flame retardant polyurethane acrylate solid polymer electrolyte based on the synergistic effect of modified halloysite nanotubes for safe lithium batteries

Jia Chen,Li Rong,Xueqing Liu,Jiyan Liu,Sha Peng,Xueliang Jiang

The practical application of polyurethane acrylate solid electrolytes is restricted by their flammability and inadequate of ion transportation performance. Herein, a novel flame retardant solid polymer electrolyte membrane was successfully designed through UV light curing phosphorus-containing polyurethane acrylate prepolymer, modified halloysite nanotubes and lithium salt. The FR-SPE1 electrolyte mainly composed of flame retardant polyurethane acrylate (FR-PUA) prepolymer, 20 wt% lithium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) (LiTFSI) along with 5 wt% acid modified halloysite nanotubes(A-HNTs), which possesses excellent P-Al-Si synergistic flame retardancy with the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 39.2%, and the vertical burning test can reach the V-0 level of UL 94 standard. Meanwhile, FR-SPE1 electrolyte exhibits strong mechanical strength and electrochemical stability, which extends the electrochemical window to 4.88 V (vs. Li + /Li). Interestingly, A-HNTs can also effectively enhance the dissociation degree of lithium salts in polymers, which is conducive to improve the lithium ion transport performance. Moreover, the cell fabricated by lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ), FR-SPE1 and Li anodes evinces benign cycling performance (156.6 mAhg −1 , 0.2C) and coulombic efficiency (99.06%) after 160 cycles at 70 °C. Thus, FR-SPE1 is argued to provide an effective approach for more broadly enhancing lithium battery safety and performance.

Synergized Multimodal Therapy for Safe and Effective Reversal of Cancer Multidrug Resistance Based on Low-Level Photothermal and Photodynamic Effects

Luming Xu,Jia Liu,Jiangbo Xi,Qilin Li,Bingcheng Chang,Xianming Duan,Guobin Wang,Shuai Wang,Zheng Wang,Lin Wang

Despite the therapeutic usefulness of near-infrared irradiation (NIR)-induced potent photothermal effects (PTE) and photodynamic effects (PDE), they inevitably damage normal tissues, often posing threat to life when treating tumors adjacent to key organs or major blood vessels. In this study, the frequently overlooked, “weak” PTE and PDE (no killing capability) are employed to synergize chemotherapy against multidrug resistance (MDR) without impairing normal tissues. An NIR-responsive nanosystem, gold (Au)-nanodot-decorated hollow carbon nanospheres coated with hyaluronic acid, is synthesized as a doxorubicin (DOX) carrier with excellent photothermal and photodynamic properties. Upon low-level infrared irradiation, the mild heat of weak PTE moderately boosts DOX unloading, meanwhile the weak PDE moderately disturbs the P-glycoprotein function for retaining intracellular DOX by impairing mitochondrial ATP production. These two “moderate” alterations are quantitatively and functionally sufficient to augment the efficacy of chemotherapy in reversing MDR without damaging neighboring tissue. Thus, this work creates a gold-dot-decorated nanocarbon spheres based nanosystem for trimodal therapy, reveals the therapeutic value of the frequently ignored weak PTE/PDE, and demonstrates that synergizing with chemotherapy to overcome drug resistance does not necessarily require potent PTE/PDE.

High-Performance and Highly Safe Solvate Ionic Liquid-Based Gel Polymer Electrolyte by Rapid UV-Curing for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Xinzhu Gao,Wei Yuan,Yang Yang,Yaopeng Wu,Chun Wang,Xuyang Wu,Xiaoqing Zhang,Yuhang Yuan,Yong Tang,Yu Chen,Chenghao Yang,Bote Zhao

Utilizing ionic liquids (ILs) with low flammability as the precursor component for a gel polymer electrolyte is a smart strategy out of safety concerns. Solvate ionic liquids (SILs) consist of equimolar lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and tetraglyme, alleviating the main problems of high viscosity and low Li+ conductivity of conventional ILs. In this study, within a very short time of 30 s, a SIL turns immobile using efficient and controllable UV-curing with an ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) network, forming a homogeneous SIL-based gel polymer electrolyte (SGPE) with enhanced thermal stability (216 °C), robust mechanical strength (compression modulus: 1.701 MPa), and high ionic conductivity (0.63 mS cm–1 at room temperature). A Li|SGPE|LiFePO4 cell demonstrates high charge/discharge reversibility and cycling stability with a capacity retention rate of 99.7% after 750 cycles and an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.7%, owing to its excellent electrochemical compatibility with Li-metal. A close-contact electrode/electrolyte interface is formed by in situ curing of the electrolyte on the electrode surface, which enables the pouch full cell to work stably under the conditions of cutting/bending. In view of the excellent mechanical, thermal, and electrochemical performances of SGPE, it is believed to be a promising gel polymer electrolyte for constructing high-safety lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Dilute Aqueous Hybrid Electrolyte with Regulated Core-Shell-Solvation Structure Endows Safe and Low-Cost Potassium-Ion Energy Storage Devices

Jianchao Chen,Shulai Lei,Shuxian Zhang,Chunyan Zhu,Qingyuan Liu,Chengxiang Wang,Zhiwei Zhang,Shijie Wang,Yuanchang Shi,Longwei Yin,Rutao Wang

High-concentration “water-in-salt” (WIS) electrolytes with the wider electrochemical stability window (ESW) can give rise to safe, non-flammable, and high-energy aqueous potassium-ion energy storage devices, thus highlighting the prospect for applications in grid-scale energy storage. However, WIS electrolytes usually depend on highly concentrated salts, leading to serious concerns about cost and sustainability. Here, an aqueous low-concentration-based potassium-ion hybrid electrolyte is demonstrated with the regulated core-shell-solvation structure by using an aprotic solvent, i.e., trimethyl phosphate, to limit the water activity. This aqueous hybrid electrolyte has a low salt concentration (1.6 mol L −1 ) of potassium trifluoromethanesulfonate but with an expanded ESW up to 3.4 V and the nonflammable property. Based on this dilute aqueous hybrid electrolyte, electrochemical double-layer capacitors are capable of working within a large voltage range (0–2.4 V) at a wide range of temperatures from −20 to 60 °C. An aqueous potassium-ion battery consisting of an organic 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide anode, Prussian blue K 1.5 Mn 0.61 Fe 0.39 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.77 ·H 2 O cathode and this dilute aqueous hybrid electrolyte can operate well at rates between 0.2 and 4.0 C and deliver a high energy density of 66.5 Wh kg −1 as well as a durable cycling stability with a capacity retention of 84.5% after 600 cycles at 0.8 C.

Characteristic flavor fingerprint disclosure of dzo beef in Tibet by applying SAFE-GC-O-MS and HS-GC-IMS technology

Junwen Wan,Qian Liu,Changzhong Ma,Bertrand Muhoza,Yaling Huang,Min Sun,Shiqing Song,Chi-Tang Ho

To understand the overall flavor of the dzo beef, fatty acids, volatile compounds and aroma profiles of dzo beef samples (raw beef (RB), broth (BT) and cooked beef (CB)) were investigated by head-space-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The fatty acid analysis showed a decrease in the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, which decreased from 2.60 % in RB to 0.51 % in CB. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed that HS-GC-IMS was able to distinguish different samples. A total of 19 characteristic compounds with odor activity value (OAV) > 1 were identified by gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC-O). Fruity, caramellic, fatty and fermented attributes were enhanced after stewing. Butyric acid and 4-methylphenol were responsible for the stronger off-odor in RB. 3-Hydroxy-2-butanone and 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2 H )-furanone with buttery and caramellic attributes were dominated in BT, while ( E )-2-nonenal, ( E , E )-2,4-decadienal and ( E , E )-2,4-nonadienal prominently conferred fatty attribute on CB. Furthermore, anethole with anisic aroma was first identified in beef, which may be one of the typical chemical markers that distinguish dzo beef from other varieties.

Fire-retardant sp3 boron-based single ion conducting polymer electrolyte for safe, high efficiency and dendrite-free Li-metal batteries

Yunfeng Zhang,Jiaying Wang,Chang Tan,Yang He,Yazhou Chen,Shikang Huo,Danli Zeng,Chen Li,Hansong Cheng

Single lithium ion conducting polymer electrolytes (SIPEs) are an emerging class of alternative polymer electrolytes for protecting lithium metal anode . This work explores a fully aromatic sp 3 boron based SIPE, lithium poly (4,4′-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone borate), Li-PSB, via a one-step synthetic procedure. A series of highly porous SIPE membranes, defined as po -PBSBs, comprising of Li-PSB and a fully aromatic polybenzimidazole (PBI) binder are firstly prepared. As a polymer electrolyte, po -PBSB exhibits high lithium ion transference number of close to unity, high ionic conductivity , excellent thermal dimensional stability and promising flame-retardant. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations depict multi-coordinated lithium ion transport channels in the po -PBSB membranes. By serving as polymer electrolyte in lithium metal batteries (LMBs), Li/LiFePO 4 (LFP) cell, the po -PBSB shows an effective suppression of lithium dendrite growth. As a consequence, po -PBSB based Li/LFP cell demonstrates superior cycling performance remaining 76.1% of its initial capacity with nearly 100% coulombic efficiency at 1.0C after 200 cycles. The excellent performance may be ascribed to the remarkable lithium ion transference number, high organic solvent absorption in pores and thermal and electrochemical stabilities of the po- PBSB. We believe that the novel SIPE materials have great potential for application in high-safety LMBs.
