Periosteum provides nourishment to bones and facilitates osteogenesis. The structural and functional impairment of periosteum can cause bone regeneration difficulties. Artificial periosteum with suitable mechanical properties and chemical composition can effectively guide bone tissue regeneration. In this study, a polycaprolactone (PCL)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/sodium alginate (SA) micron-fibrous bionic periosteum was prepared. The water-in-oil PCL-CMCS/SA emulsion was prepared by using Span 80 as the emulsifier, and the PCL/CMCS/SA composite micron-fibers were fabricated by emulsion electrospinning. The physicochemical properties of the PCL/CMCS/SA micron-fibers were investigated via SEM, FTIR and tensile test analyses. CCK8 assay, live/dead assay, cell adhesion, and qPCR tests were carried out to evaluate the osteoinductive capacity of the micron-fibers and their biocompatibility to MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts. The results showed that CMCS and SA were successfully immobilized in the micron-fibers. The PCL/CMCS/SA micron-fibers showed an average diameter of 2.381 ± 1.068 μm with excellent tensile strength. The PCL/CMCS/SA composite scaffold demonstrated no significant cytotoxicity and could facilitate osteoblast adhesion. In addition, it could upregulate the early expression of osteogenic genes ALP and Runx2. The PCL/CMCS/SA micron-fibers prepared by emulsion electrospinning showed good mechanical properties, excellent biocompatibility and osteoinductive capacity to osteoblasts, and could be used as potential transplantable scaffolds for repairing large-segment bone defects.

In recent years, hydrogels with antifouling properties and good biocompatibility have attracted great attention in bio-devices, but most of them are lack of eminent mechanical properties that limit their practical application greatly. In this work, a newly hybrid ion-covalent cross-linked double network (DN) hydrogels with excellent antifouling as well as mechanical properties were prepared by a simple one-pot method based on sodium alginate and a kind of antifouling material, N -hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA). The DN hydrogel have excellent mechanical properties, including high tensile strength (1.32 MPa), high elastic modulus (0.31 MPa) and preeminent fatigue resistance. Besides, the DN hydrogel have good antifouling properties suggested by protein adsorption and cell adhesion experiments. In addition, they also exhibit highly in vitro compatibility. These properties make the DN hydrogels suitable for application in different fields, such as tissue scaffolds, implantable devices and so on.

Herein we report a new type of adsorbent for the efficient removal of Pb(II), which is prepared from cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and sodium alginate (SA) via a simple cross-linking method. During this process, the porous structure of the hydrogel beads was formed by the disintegration of calcium phosphate . The performance and structure of the prepared beads were systematically examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. Investigations revealed that the adsorption equilibrium was attained after approximately 120 min. In addition, 82% of Pb(II) ions were absorbed in the initial 40 min at 297 K. The adsorption process was consistent with a pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and the limit adsorption capacity reached 318.47 mg g −1 . Acid treatment and regeneration experiments verified that the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) on the beads was satisfactory, and the adsorption rate remained at >80% after 5 cycles. These results indicate that the prepared beads are potential adsorbents for water treatment.

ε-Polylysine-loaded chitosan-sodium alginate nanoparticles (ε-PL NPs) were synthesized and characterized in terms of particle size distribution, surface morphology, thermal properties and structure, respectively. Their antibacterial activity on Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis , Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus were studied. The ε-PL NPs were well dispersed as spherical particles within the range of 200–500 nm. In vitro release studies showed an initial burst release of ε-PL from the nanoparticles followed by a sustained release. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of ε-PL NPs against four test bacteria were 7.81 μg/mL ( E. coli ), 31.25 μg/mL ( B. subtilis ), 15.63 μg/mL ( S. aureus ) and 38.67 μg/mL ( M. luteus ), respectively. The bacteriostatic activity of ε-PL NPs was three times higher ( P < 0.05) than that of free ε-PL in terms of inhibition zone diameter, suggesting that ε-PL NPs has stronger antibacterial activity. These findings may provide some basis for the application of ε-PL NPs as a promising food preservative.

The interaction between sodium alginate (SA) and turbot myofibrillar proteins (TMP) and the effects of SA concentration (0.1%–0.5%) on the rheological and emulsifying properties of the mixture at neutral pH were investigated. TMP and SA formed complexes through electrostatic repulsion and hydrophobic interaction. The FT-IR analysis indicated that hydrogen bonding was also related to the interaction. With the addition of SA, the electrostatic repulsion between molecules enhanced, which prevented protein aggregation and improved the stability of dispersions. The TMP/SA mixture showed non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior. The viscosity gradually increased with the increasing SA concentration. TMP and SA formed an interconnected gel-like network structure with a predominant elastic behavior. The strength of network increased due to the strong repulsion between the two biopolymers . Both EAI and ESI of TMP significantly increased after SA addition. The addition of SA reduced droplet size of emulsions. The emulsions also showed pseudoplastic behavior. Addition of SA increased stability of emulsions by increasing viscosity of continuous phase. Complexation with SA effectively improved the rheological and emulsifying properties of fish myofibrillar proteins. These results contributed to the efficient utilization of marine fish proteins as functional ingredients in food products.

Fires caused by spontaneous coal combustion pose a serious threat to mine safety. Although sodium alginate-based gel foams have made significant progress in preventing and controlling coal spontaneous combustion, they still suffer from the limitation of being prone to rupture and collapse under high temperatures. Biomass intumescent flame retardants not only have excellent thermal protection performance at high temperatures but also have good compatibility with sodium alginate. Therefore, this study constructed a biomass intumescent flame retardant (PLSL) and incorporated it into a sodium alginate-based gel foam system (TRGF) to prepare an intumescent thermally stable gel foam (PLSL-TRGF). The results indicated that there are hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between PLSL and TRGF. PLSL-TRGF could form an insulating intumescent char layer and deliver excellent fire suppression performance while inhibiting coal spontaneous combustion. In addition, PLSL-TRGF effectively reduced the influence of heat and delayed the temperature rise, with the temperature reduction rate up to 89.30%. At 200℃, the CO inhibition rate of coal treated with PLSL-TRGF increased to 77.41%, and the Cross Point Temperature increased by 8℃ compared with that of treated with TRGF, showing excellent coal spontaneous combustion inhibition performance. Meanwhile, the fire extinguishing efficiency of PLSL-TRGF increased by 83.51% compared with that of TRGF. PLSL‑TRGF mainly works through cooling, oxygen isolation and coverage, free radical capturing, and forming an intumescent char layer at high temperatures to further block the transfer of heat and oxygen. This study provides a novel strategy for the development of high performance gel foams and promotes the advancement of coal spontaneous combustion prevention and control technology.

A composite network hydrogel was prepared using soybean protein amyloid fibrils (SPAF) and sodium alginate (SA) through Ca 2+ induction. The influence of Ca 2+ on the microstructure and rheological properties of the SPAF-SA hydrogel was investigated. The results confirmed the successful preparation of SPAF, as verified by Thioflavin T fluorescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). Microstructural analysis revealed that the SPAF and SA interacted via hydrogen bonds, with SA crosslinked by Ca 2+ to strengthen the structure, resulting in a compact 3D network within the SPAF-SA hydrogel. Rheological testing demonstrated the elasticity and viscosity changes of the hydrogel under shear stress, and revealed the role and structural transitions of the composite network structure. Additionally, Ca 2+ significantly influenced the strength of the hydrogel, with the SPAF-SA hydrogel exhibiting maximum strength at a Ca 2+ addition of 1.2% (w/v). The findings highlight the potential of the SPAF-SA hydrogel as a food texture enhancer, offering insights into its practical applications in hydrogel systems.

Electromagnetic waves endanger precision instruments and human health, driving the demand for multifunctional flexible transparent conductive films (FTCFs) with integrated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and electric heating to ensure reliable microelectronic performance in extreme environments beyond conventional materials’ limits. However, current FTCFs based on carbon nanomaterials, metal nanowires, or 2D materials still suffer from insufficient oxidation resistance, weak adhesion to substrates, and performance degradation under complex conditions, limiting their practical deployment. To address these, we designed the films, which involved constructing silver nanowire/carbon nanotubes/silver nanoparticle (AgNW/CNT@Ag) conductive networks on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via spray and spin coating, followed by transferring them into glycerol-modified, sodium alginate (SA)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite layers. This structure leverages AgNPs grafted on CNTs, forming resistor-capacitor-like configurations to enhance EMI shielding via improved electromagnetic wave absorption. The embedded design, combined with CNT coverage over AgNW, strengthens the adhesion and oxidation resistance by blocking oxygen. Additionally, SA-induced surface wrinkles boost conductivity and wave reflection, while the conductive network enables efficient Joule heating. The resulting film exhibits performance: 9.46 Ω/sq sheet resistance @ 57.7% transmittance, a figure-of-merit (FoM) of 6.31, an EMI shielding effectiveness of 31.42 dB, a saturation temperature of 93.1 °C at 6 V, a relative resistance change (RRC) of 0.92 after 60 oxidation cycles, and an RRC of 0.36 after 1000 bending cycles. This work provides a promising structural design and material strategy for FTCFs, advancing their commercialization in multifunctional electronic applications.

Heterointerface engineering, especially the construction of heterointerfaces based on two highly active components, is an effective strategy to enhance the sodium storage capacity and accelerate the reaction kinetics of transition metal chalcogenide anodes. Herein, a series of SA-CoFe-S composites composed of two highly active metal sulfides, Co3S4and Fe7S8, were fabricated through in situ chelation effects coupled with a one-step sulfurization strategy. The optimized SA-CoFe(1:4)-S is composed of fine nanoparticles encapsulated by uniformly distributed S-doped carbon. This unique carbon confinement effect and nano-sized active particles can alleviate volume expansion, shorten the ion diffusion distance, and accelerate electron transfer. In addition, the strong electric-field effect and rich heterointerfaces generated by the heterostructure provide more active sites for sodium storage and accelerate the sodium storage kinetics. The relevant theoretical calculation outcomes further confirm that the heterointerfaces formed between Co3S4and Fe7S8can enhance the adsorption energy toward sodium ions and boost the electrical conductivity of the composite material. As an anode material for sodium-ion batteries, the initial discharge/charge capacities were 723/1010 mAh·g−1, exhibited at 1 A·g−1, and the coulombic efficiency (CE) corresponding to this current density was measured to be 71.6%. Even after 800 cycles, the reversible discharge specific capacity of the electrode can still reach 806 mAh·g−1at 1 A·g−1. Additionally, at an elevated current density of 3 A·g−1, the electrode sustains stable cycling over 500 cycles, with its discharge capacity kept at 258 mAh·g−1after the long-term cycling test.

Conductive hydrogels that simultaneously exhibit high mechanical robustness, reliable electrical conductivity, and interfacial adhesion are highly desirable for flexible sensing applications; however, achieving these properties in a single system remains challenging due to intrinsic structure–property trade-offs. Herein, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel (ASP hydrogel) is developed based on a polyacrylamide (PAM)/sodium alginate (SA) double-network architecture using a gallic acid (GA)–Fe3+–pyrrole (Py) coupling strategy. In this design, GA provides metal-coordination sites for Fe3+, while Fe3+simultaneously serves as an oxidant to trigger the in situ polymerization of pyrrole, enabling the homogeneous integration of polypyrrole (PPy) conductive networks within the hydrogel matrix. The resulting ASP hydrogel exhibits a markedly enhanced fracture strength of 2.95 MPa compared with PAM (0.26 MPa) and PAM–SA (0.22 MPa) hydrogels, together with stable electrical conductivity and reproducible strain-dependent electrical responses. Moreover, the introduction of dynamic metal–phenolic coordination and hydrogen-bonding interactions endows the hydrogel with intrinsic self-healing capability and strong adhesion to diverse substrates. Rather than relying on simple filler incorporation, this work demonstrates an integrated network design that balances mechanical strength, conductivity, and adhesion, providing a versatile material platform for flexible strain sensors and wearable electronics.

The development of multifunctional bioinks that simultaneously possess robust mechanical properties, bioactivity, and high printability remains a central challenge in tissue engineering. In this study, a biofunctional 3D-printable hydrogel based on a collagen-mimetic peptide (CMP) and sodium alginate (SA) was constructed for the treatment of full-thickness skin defects. Europium ions (Eu 3+ ) coordinated with both the carboxyl groups of SA and the aspartic acid residues of the CMP-DD peptide, forming a reinforced dual-network structure with enhanced stability and mechanical strength, which enables precise extrusion-based 3D printing with excellent shape fidelity. Subsequent incorporation of calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) for secondary crosslinking further endows the hydrogel with tunable elasticity and superior structural durability. The composite hydrogel significantly promoted cell adhesion and proliferation, while exhibiting pronounced antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In a Sprague–Dawley rat full-thickness skin defect model, it significantly accelerates wound healing, enhances granulation tissue formation, promotes collagen deposition, and improves re-epithelialization. This dual-coordination CMP-based composite hydrogel integrates outstanding mechanical performance, bioactivity, and printability, offering an innovative and promising strategy for the design of high-performance bioinks and the advancement of skin tissue regeneration.

Abstract Hesperidin (HES) exhibits limited oral delivery potential because of poor aqueous solubility and low bioaccessibility. Here, HES-loaded liposomes were incorporated into a sodium alginate/gelatin (SA/G) composite hydrogel to construct a liposome-in-hydrogel delivery system. The SA/G ratio was systematically optimized to establish a balanced polymer network through the complementary functions of SA and gelatin. The optimized formulation (H5) exhibited a compact three-dimensional network with cooperative intermolecular interactions, favorable thermal behavior and improved colloidal stability. During simulated gastrointestinal digestion, H5 suppressed premature HES release under oral and gastric conditions while promoting sustained intestinal release. H5 achieved a bioaccessibility of 26.80%, compared with 21.26% for liposomes and 14.26% for free HES, and showed approximately 23-fold and 5-fold higher intestinal tissue-associated accumulation, respectively. These findings indicate that rational optimization of the SA/G network balances matrix integrity, hydration, and liposome stabilization, providing a promising food-grade strategy for controlled gastrointestinal delivery of poorly soluble bioactive compounds.
