A highly sensitive and selective triethylamine gas sensor based on SnO2–Pt/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite

Lu Mengqi,Wang Ruoyu,Miao Xiaoxuan,Tang Tingting,Hu Wenfeng,Jin Xiaoxuan,Wang Haoxiang,He Yuyang,Wang Yang,Xu Dongpo

The increasing consumption of high-protein seafood has heightened the demand for efficient detection of triethylamine (TEA), a key spoilage biomarker. In this study, a novel ternary SnO 2 -Pt/Ti 3 C 2 T x composite was for the first time fabricated via a combined strategy of electrospinning and electrostatic self-assembly for TEA sensing. Characterization confirmed the formation of a well-defined ternary heterostructure with abundant mesopores and a synergistic microstructure. Benefiting from this rational design, gas sensing tests revealed that the composite exhibits a high response, fast response/recovery, excellent cycling/long-term stability, and high selectivity with a low detection limit of 0.05 ppm at an optimal temperature of 122.28°C, alongside stable performance under 30–70% relative humidity. The enhanced performance is attributed to the catalytic effect of Pt, high conductivity of MXene, and synergistic interactions among the components. This work provides new insights for developing high-performance TEA gas sensors with promising practical potential. Graphical abstract

Tension Effect Induced Ti-O Terminals Passivation of Ti3C2Tx MXene Towards Self-Discharge Suppression

Xuefeng Sha,Shiru Wu,Peng Gao,Zixing Wang,Fan Zeng,Wang Zhou,Xueli Wu,Minghao Yu,Jiaxu Yan,Xianyin Song,Jilei Liu,Changzhong Jiang

The self-discharge phenomenon remains a fundamental challenge that limits the practical deployment of advanced supercapacitors, particularly in MXene-based systems where the interfacial ion-electron coupling dominates charge redistribution dynamics. Here, a surface terminal engineering strategy was proposed by utilizing 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTSE) to construct a surface passivation layer through hydrogen-bond-mediated assembly. Benefiting from the generated tension effect between BTSE and MXene, it directly results the weakened hybridization effect between Ti atoms and surface terminal atoms, together with an upward shift of the d -band center and reduce of reaction energy barriers. Collectively, the passivation of surface Ti–O terminals promotes the electron transfer kinetics (Ti–O + e − + H + → Ti-OH) and inhibits the dissociation of Ti-OH terminal from the perspective of electron transfer coupling. As a result, the optimized MXene@BTSE electrode has effectively reduced the Ti–OH dissociation rates by 2.23-fold and demonstrates a remarkable self-discharge suppression, achieving 55.16% decrease of self-discharge rate in 1 m H 2 SO 4 electrolyte, compared to the pristine MXene. Moreover, the modified MXene electrode shows around 92.43 % capacitance retention over 80 000 cycles, demonstrating excellent stability. This work establishes an electron-structure-property paradigm for interfacial design in electrochemical energy storage systems.

Jing-Qi Wang,Peng-Fei Qian,Tian-Jiao Lou,Wenyi Wang,Wen-Hao Geng,Li-Chao Jing,Ze-Long Bao,Tao Wang,Hong-Zhang Geng

The rapid development of the Internet of Things has promoted the application of wearable devices in human's daily life and industrialization. Strain sensors play an indispensable role as a member of wearable devices. Here, a strain film sensor with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene, which is obtained by vacuum-assisted filtration and integrated onto a thermoplastic polyurethane substrate, is developed. Since the MWCNTs and Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene composite sensor has a characteristic ‘mud-brick’ microstructure. The sensor has the ability to detect various human movements, such as, bending of finger joints, wrists, elbow joints, and shoulder. The sensors show excellent mechanical property and can be folded more than 2000 times without failure. It also exhibits short response time, low detection limit, and wide range of use. In addition, the sensor shows excellent electrical heating performance. The temperature of the composite film can rise to 96.6 °C in a short period of time even under low voltage power supply (25 V). It likewise proves its excellent performance in terms of cyclability and long-time heating capability. The film has low production cost, easy preparation method, and simple operation. The MWCNT/Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene film can be integrated into wearable devices and shows great potential for future applications.

Intercalation and delamination of two-dimensional MXene (Ti3C2Tx) and application in sodium-ion batteries

Guoxia Lv,Jing Wang,Zhiqiang Shi,Liping Fan

The initial multilayer-structure two-dimensional transition metal carbide MXene (as-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) are synthesized by selectively etching M n+1 AX n in HF, and the surface of MXene adhere to some functional groups. Intercalation and delamination by ultrasonication in alcohol or DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) produce less lamellar structure of resultant (d-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and change the surface circumstance. This fabricated fewer-sheets samples not only improve the electrical conductibility, specific area, but also reduce the ion diffusion resistance. Meanwhile, the d-aTi 3 C 2 T x and d-D-Ti 3 C 2 T x show outstanding capacity of 110 or 120 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 with coulombic efficiency of about 95%, which lead to 26% increase compared with as-Ti 3 C 2 T x (95 mAh g −1 ) for sodium-ion batteries, and remarkable capacitance retention of 84.5% or 85.8% after cycles for in alcohol and DMSO, respectively.

Self-assembly construction of hollow Ti3C2Tx Submicro-Tubes towards efficient alkali metal ion storage

Xuan Sun,Jinyang Zhang,Yuyan Wang,Yamin Zhang,Linrui Hou,Yang Liu,Changzhou Yuan

MXenes have shown enormous potential in various electrochemical energy-related fields due to their excellent electronic and mechanical properties. However, the serious stacking of two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets (NSs) always results in modest reversible capacities and reaction kinetics when serving as an anode material for rechargeable batteries. To well address the issues, an electrospinning involved self-assembly methodology is first designed here to construct hollow Ti 3 C 2 T x submicro-tubes (Ti 3 C 2 T x -SMT) assembled with monolayered NSs. Moreover, the underlying formation mechanism of the Ti 3 C 2 T x -SMT is rationally put forward with comprehensive physicochemical analysis. The optimized Ti 3 C 2 T x -SMT with an ultra-thin wall of just several Ti 3 C 2 T x layers in thickness is endowed with abundant active sites and convenient ion diffusion/transport pathways, enhancing the electrochemical utilization, which guarantees its excellent alkali metal ion (Li + , Na + and K + ) storage behaviors in terms of both high-rate reversible capacities and long-duration cycle stability. More significantly, our contribution here provides a guiding design of 2D ultrathin materials as universal electrodes for advanced alkali metal ion batteries and beyond.

Highly Stable 3D Ti3C2Tx MXene-Based Foam Architectures toward High-Performance Terahertz Radiation Shielding

Zehui Lin,Ji Liu,Wei Peng,Yunyi Zhu,Yang Zhao,Kang Jiang,Ming Peng,Yongwen Tan

Terahertz technology promises broad applications, which calls for terahertz electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to alleviate radiation pollution. 2D transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes) with metallic conductivity are promising for EMI shielding, but simultaneously realizing light weight, high stability, and foldability in a MXene shielding material to meet the requirements of increasingly popular portable and wearable equipment has remained a great challenge. Herein, an ion-diffusion-induced gelation method is demonstrated to synthesize free-standing, light-weight, foldable, and highly stable MXene foams, in which MXene sheets are cross-linked by multivalent metal ions and graphene oxide to form an oriented porous structure. The method is highly efficient, controllable, and versatile for scalable generation of functional 3D MXene structures with arbitrary shapes and synergistic properties. The distinctive cross-linked porous structure endows the light-weight MXene foam with good foldability, outstanding durability and stability in wet environments, and an excellent terahertz shielding effectiveness of 51 dB at a small thickness of 85 μm. This work not only provides an insight for the on-target design of high-performance terahertz shielding materials but also expands the applications of MXenes in 3D macroscopic form.

High-sensitivity PZT-OV/Ti3C2Tx/PVDF piezoelectric fiber for self-powered vital signs monitoring

Yucheng Lv,Tao Yang,Enhui Wang,Bo Shen,Kang Wang,Hongyang Wang,Kuo-Chih Chou,Xinmei Hou

Self-powered wearable electronics for real-time physiological monitoring require mechanical energy harvesters that simultaneously offer high sensitivity, flexibility, and power density, yet most existing piezoelectric nanogenerators struggle to efficiently convert low-frequency biomechanical energy under these constraints. In particular, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based composite fibers often suffer from limited interfacial charge transport and insufficient piezoelectric response, which restricts their use in practical, textile-integrated devices. Here, we develop a high-performance piezoelectric composite fiber, PZT-O V /Ti 3 C 2 T x /PVDF, by electrostatic spinning self-assembly of oxygen vacancy–engineered lead zirconate titanate (PZT-O V ), MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ), and PVDF. The resulting prickly-fibril interfacial structure between PZT-O V and Ti 3 C 2 T x enables ultrafast carrier transport and enhanced mechanosensitive, yielding flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) with a 15-fold increase in current density under compression. Optimized devices deliver a peak power density of 4.78 μW cm −2 , a sensitivity of 1.46 V kPa −1 , and an energy conversion efficiency of 14.8%. Integrated into wearable textiles, these PENGs harvest subtle biomechanical energy and wirelessly transmit data via Bluetooth, enabling self-powered monitoring of body temperature and heart rate. These results demonstrate that combining oxygen vacancy engineering with MXene-assisted interfacial design in electrospun fibers is an effective strategy for advancing high-performance, self-powered wearable biosensing systems.

Development of functional Ti3C2TX MXene/cement composites with electromagnetic wave absorption and shielding capabilities

Wang Riran,Wan Jingku,Zhou Lu,Ye Li,Wang Meng,Sun Zhuohan

The present study has attempted to develop cementitious composites with electromagnetic (EM) absorbing and shielding properties utilising a low dosage of Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene flakes. A polytetrafluoroethylene mould was employed to prepare MXene/cement paste and cement mortar specimens. The microscopic morphology, elemental identity, crystal structure, and chemical functional groups of MXene flakes and MXene/cementitious composites were characterised by a series of microscopic tests. The response behaviour and interaction mechanism of MXene/cement composites with EM fields have been thoroughly investigated from various perspectives, including the evolution of dielectric and permeability parameters, EM wave loss characteristics, EM wave absorption characteristics, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE). The findings indicated that mono-layered MXene flakes possessed the capacity to establish a potentially uninterrupted conductive network within cement composites, and to exert an influence on the crystalline phase characteristics of the cement paste during hydration. The MXene has been demonstrated to enhance the dielectric constant and the EM wave loss of cement pastes and mortars. Furthermore, the reflection loss and the impedance matching outcomes demonstrated that both 1.8 wt.% MXene/cement paste and 1.2 wt.% MXene/cement mortar possessed the optimal EM absorbing capability. The total EMI SE has been found to rise with increasing MXene mass ratio for both cement paste and mortar. Generally, MXene/cement composites exhibited EM shielding mechanisms dominated by absorption. This study may provide novel insights and industry theoretical support for the universal application of MXene materials in EM wave absorbing and shielding in the field of lightweight, and high-strength building materials.

Ti3C2TX/Graphene Aerogels for High-Efficiency Hydrovoltaic Power Generation: Performance Optimization and Mechanism Elucidation

Tianran Zhao,Sai Li,Yi'na Yang,Liyang Zhao,Jia Chen,Chunna Yu,Chang Zhao,Guangjian Xing

The global energy shortage crisis underscores the urgent need for sustainable power generation technologies. This study focuses on the hydrovoltaic performance and underlying mechanism of Ti3C2TX/graphene aerogels (TGAs). The TGAs were fabricated via hydrothermal treatment followed by freeze-drying, which results in a three-dimensional porous microstructure with a large specific surface area, low density, and abundant surface functional groups. TGAs demonstrated exceptional hydrovoltaic power generation performance, with a maximum output power density of 14.59 mW cm⁻3 , outperforming many reported hydrovoltaic materials. The performance of TGAs was systematically evaluated under varying sunlight intensities, in different electrolyte solutions, and with TGAs containing different Ti3C2TX-to-graphene mass ratios. The underlying mechanism was elucidated based on the Stern model of electric double layers, which linked the enhanced performance to increased surface charge density from cation adsorption and the conductive framework of Ti3C2TX. Notably, this study introduced a novel interfacial modification mechanism using dye molecules. Performance tests in dye-containing solutions revealed that the output voltage in the Congo red (CR) + CaCl2 mixture was higher than that in pure CaCl2 solution, attributed to synergistic effects between the dye molecules and the electrolyte. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance hydrovoltaic materials.

Simultaneous voltage-gated control of ion and water transport in Zr4-Ti3C2Tx nanochannel membranes

Zhang Yanlin,Lei Lei,Wang Jin,Li Shangzhen,Liu Yanzheng,Sun Yuqing,Liao Tongxin,Chen Rong,Wang Cong,Wang Kexin,Luo Fulai,Zhou Ke,Lv Bohao,Wang Lei

Controlling water and ion transport across nanoconfined channels is essential for natural biological processes and crucial for breakthroughs in diverse scientific and technological fields. Here, we present an efficient voltage-controlled strategy that simultaneously regulates water and ion diffusion by fine-tuning the external voltage applied to a high-conductivity Zr 4 -Ti 3 C 2 T x nanochannel membrane, which demonstrates high structural stability in aqueous environments. Under positive voltage, ion permeation increased by a factor of 10.18, whereas negative voltage reduced it to 0.17 of its original value. Interestingly, water diffusion exhibited the opposite response, with negative voltage enhancing water transport due to the facilitated rotation motion of nanoconfined water with the increased interfacial hydrogen bonding. This distinct voltage-gated transport behavior provides a potential solution to the longstanding trade-off between permeation and selectivity in membrane separation. In desalination trials, applying negative voltage improved ion rejection from 72.09 % to 98.57 % and doubled water permeation. Additionally, in lithium concentration applications, our approach enabled simultaneous improvements in water permeation and Li + rejection. Our findings open promising pathways for advancements in energy, resource, and environmental applications.

Photoresponse of Ti3C2Tx MXene promotes its adsorptive-reductive removal of Cr(VI) from water

Yuxuan Zhang,Jun Luo,Xiuyan Wang,Dunhan Zhang,Hongxia Xu,Yuanyuan Sun,Xueyuan Gu,Xin Hu,Bin Gao,Hongqiang Ren

MXenes, such as Ti 3 C 2 T x , demonstrate tremendous potential as heavy metal adsorbents due to their abundant reaction sites, high hydrophilicity , controllable interlayer spacing, and inherent reduction ability. However, their structural dependent pollutant removal performances and the related mechanisms are far less studied. Therefore, the removing abilities of Cr(VI) from water on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with different structures (multilayer (ML-) and delaminated (DL-) Ti 3 C 2 T x ) synthesized via several etching techniques were evaluated. Focusing on the most effective ML- and DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x obtained by acid/fluoride salt etching, the impacts of structural variations on the Cr(VI) removal performances were explored. Both ML- and DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x demonstrate outstanding Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction capabilities, achieving equilibrium within 500 min with capacities of 92.7 and 205 mg/g, respectively. The differences in removal mechanisms stemed from the varying adsorption and reduction capacities of two MXenes. ML-Ti 3 C 2 T x , with lower surface area and porosity, had low adsorption capacity but superior reduction ability, efficiently converting most Cr(VI) to Cr(III) (66.8%). Conversely, DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited better removal efficiency but a lower capacity for reduction (45.7%). Notably, although the partial reduction of DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x to TiO 2 results in its limited chemical reduction capacity, Ti 3 C 2 T x might serve as a co-catalyst for TiO 2 , boosting the photoresponsiveness of DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x or TiO 2 through Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 heterojunctions , thereby facilitating photocatalysis to realize the reduction of Cr(VI). Both Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited both excellent Cr(VI) removal capacity and detoxification capacity, demonstrating their high potential in treating heavy metal pollutants in wastewater.

Double-confined nanoheterostructure Sb/Sb2S3@Ti3C2Tx@C toward ultra-stable Li-/Na-ion batteries

Wang Dan,Ma Qun,He Huan,Wang Zhi-Yuan,Zheng Run-Guo,Sun Hong-Yu,Liu Yan-Guo,Liu Chun-Li

Antimony-based materials with high capacities and moderate potentials are promising anodes for lithium-/sodium-ion batteries. However, their tremendous volume expansion and inferior conductivity lead to poor structural stability and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, a double-confined nanoheterostructure Sb/Sb 2 S 3 @Ti 3 C 2 T x @C has been fabricated through a solvothermal method followed by low-temperature heat treatment. The dual protection of “MXene” and “carbon” can better accommodate the volume expansion of Sb/Sb 2 S 3 . The strong covalent bond (Ti–S, Ti–O–Sb, C–O–Sb) can firmly integrate Sb-based material with Ti 3 C 2 T x and carbon, which significantly improves the structure stability. In addition, the carbon layer can restrain the oxidation of MXenes, and the nano-Sb/Sb 2 S 3 can facilitate electron/ion transport and suppress the restacking of MXenes. The heterogeneous interface between Sb and Sb 2 S 3 can further promote interfacial charge transfer. The MXene-Sb/Sb 2 S 3 @C-1 with the optimal Sb content shows high specific capacities, comparable rate properties and ultra-stable cycling performances (250 mAh·g −1 after 2500 cycles at 1 A·g −1 for sodium-ion batteries). Ex situ X-ray diffractometer (XRD) test reveals the storage mechanism including the conversion and alloying process of MXene-Sb/Sb 2 S 3 @C-1. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) test results demonstrate that the pseudocapacitance behavior is dominant in MXene-Sb/Sb 2 S 3 @C-1, especially at large current. This design paves the way for exploring high-performance alloy-based/conversion-type anode for energy storage devices. Graphical abstract
