Rare-earth (RE)-doped upconversion luminescence (UCL) materials are essential for advanced optoelectronic technologies, yet their performance is severely compromised by thermal quenching (TQ) at elevated temperatures, hindering practical deployment in high-temperature environments. In this study, we introduce a defect-mediated strategy to achieve thermally enhanced UCL in Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 double perovskites, focusing on the dynamic behavior of chloride vacancy-related centers (V Cl -related centers) and their possible role in modulating energy transfer between RE ions. By systematically tuning V Cl -related centers relative abundance through different processing routes and LiCl doping, we establish data-consistent mechanistic interpretation and a clear correlative relationship between defect-related states and the thermal enhancement of UCL emission. The ground sample, characterized by high defect density, exhibits a 2.1-fold increase in UCL intensity at 573 K compared to room temperature. With moderate LiCl doping (5%), the thermal enhancement factor increases to 5.9-fold—nearly three times greater than that of the undoped ground counterpart. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Hall effect measurements, and fluorescence lifetime analysis, we show that defect-related states associated with V Cl are consistent with non-radiative trapping centers affecting the Yb 3+ -sensitized upconversion pathway under ambient conditions. Upon heating, the combined results are consistent with a thermally activated reconfiguration of the defect landscape, plausibly involving partial compensation or transformation of V Cl -related centers by mobile chlorine-related species, thereby suppressing non-radiative pathways and enhancing Yb 3+ →Er 3+ energy transfer efficiency. Critically, singly Er 3+ -doped samples show negligible thermal enhancement, confirming that the observed effect specifically targets Yb 3+ sensitizers rather than Er 3+ activators. This work provides a data-supported working model for thermally enhanced UCL in halide double perovskites and establishes a general defect-engineering approach for designing RE-doped UCL materials with superior resistance to thermal quenching. These advances open new avenues for applying such materials in extreme-environment optoelectronic devices, including high-temperature optical sensors and NIR-driven light sources.

Inorganic luminescent materials play a critical role in the fields of multimodal anti-counterfeiting. Although integrating multiple luminescence modes into a single matrix is considered a feasible strategy, it still faces significant challenges such as the regulation and identification of trap levels. Herein, Ba 0.75 Al 11 O 17.25 :Eu 2+ ,Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ phosphors integrating multiple luminescence modes, including afterglow, up-conversion luminescence (UCL), photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL), and thermoluminescence (TL) were developed. Importantly, the introduction of the Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ion pair not only suppresses the concentration of shallow traps but also induces the formation of numerous deep traps (1.62 eV), which are essential for multimodal luminescence and enhance the thermal stability of the luminescence. Furthermore, through comprehensive analysis of density functional theory (DFT) calculation, TL curves, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), it is confirmed that the trap levels primarily originate from oxygen vacancies and interstitial aluminum. Finally, a highly stable flexible film was fabricated, whose emission intensity and color can be controlled by external light/thermal stimuli, and its applications in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption are demonstrated. This work facilitates the research on advanced luminescent materials and traps regulation mechanisms.

Rare earth ions doped luminescent materials have demonstrated their potentiality as sensitive thermometers with good accuracy and high spatial resolution. Nevertheless, low luminescence efficiency, especially at high temperature, still limits the development of this thermometry technique. Here, Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ codoped CaWO 4 phosphors were synthesized using high temperature solid-state method, and Li + ions were introduced aiming to improve the near-infrared (NIR) emissions from Nd 3+ in the spectral range of 725–950 nm. The influence of Li + codoping on the structure and NIR luminescence in CaWO 4 : Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ when excited by a 980 nm laser diode was investigated. NIR-NIR emissions from Li + codoped samples are successfully strengthened compared with that without Li + ions, which is mainly attributed to the distortion of the crystal structure and the increase of crystalline size by Li + . The optical temperature sensing behavior of NIR luminescence from Nd 3+ was studied based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR). Assisted by Li + ions, the NIR-NIR emissions are observed to be effectively enhanced with the increment of temperature. And a new pair of thermally coupled levels in Nd 3+ ions with excellent thermometry characteristics is explored, through which superior measurement sensitivity as well as accuracy could be achieved. In addition, light-induced temperature rise was realized in the phosphors, which makes CaWO 4 : Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ /Li + excellent candidate for luminescence thermometry and optical heaters.

In contrast to common multiple upconversion (UC) emission characteristic from Ho 3+ , intense single-band red UC emission is realized in perovskite KZnF 3 : Mn 2+ ,Yb 3+ ,Ho 3+ nanocrystals via controlling the doping concentration ratio of Mn 2+ to Ho 3+ . Based on stokes emission, UC luminescence and energy levels of Mn 2+ and Ho 3+ , a bidirectional energy transfer from the 5 S 2 / 5 F 4 state of Ho 3+ to the 4 T 1 ( 4 G) state of Mn 2+ or | F 2 7 / 2 , T 4 1 ( G 4 ) 〉 state of Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimer, then to 5 F 5 state of Ho 3+ (ET2) is provided to explain the unique UC emission behaviors of KZnF 3 : Mn 2+ ,Yb 3+ ,Ho 3+ . The effects of dopant concentration on the UC luminescence properties of KZnF 3 : Mn 2+ , Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ is investigated in detail. Analysis of the dominant red UC emission of KZnF 3 : Mn 2+ , Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ under different laser pulse width excitation indicates the energy transfer process . The special temperature dependent UC luminescence for Mn 2+ doped and Mn 2+ freely doped KZnF 3 :Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ further confirm the bidirectional energy transfer mechanism in the UC process. The study of these single-band red UC nanocrystals provides deep insights into the understanding of bidirectional energy transfer in UC mechanism, offering the possibility for applications in biolabels and bioimaging.

In this work, the application of near infrared (NIR)-emitting NaYbF 4 :1%Tm 3+ @NaLuF 4 :30%Nd 3+ core–shell nanoparticles is reported for noninvasive probing and monitoring the temperature during photopolymerization of dental materials. When excited at 808 nm, the synthesized nanoparticles emit NIR photoluminescence (PL) with two distinctive peaks at 865 and 980 nm which correspond to radiative transitions from the doped Nd 3+ and Yb 3+ ions, respectively. Luminescence intensity ratio between these two bands is found to vary with temperature due to temperature-dependent electronic excitation energy transfer between Nd 3+ and Yb 3+ ions at the core/shell interface. This finding allows luminescence ratiometric evaluation of the in situ temperature during photopolymerization of resin cement (doped with nanoparticles) in a veneer placement procedure. In addition, the NIR emission also enables PL imaging of the distribution of the adhesive under the veneer. The results highlight that rare-earth ions–doped nanoparticles with both excitation and emission in the NIR spectral range are advantageous for both PL-based nanothermometry and imaging due to the reduced attenuation of NIR light by dental ceramics.

The development of novel phosphors with stable and efficient green and red up-conversion (UC) emission is important for many applications such as fluorescent labeling , color display and anticounterfeiting. In this work, we report a stable and efficient green and red up-converter of LiYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Ho 3+ octahedrons obtained by modified hydrothermal method . The UC emission and luminescence decays of LiYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Ho 3+ with various Yb 3+ and Ho 3+ ion concentrations were studied systematically under 976 nm LD excitation. The Yb 3+ and Ho 3+ ion concentrations were optimized to be 20 mol% and 1 mol% respectively, for efficient green and red UC emissions. LiYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Ho 3+ presents not only controlled morphology of monodisperse octahedrons with length of ∼20 μm and width of ∼10 μm, but also performs efficient green and red UC emissions, which is about four times stronger than that of β-NaGdF 4 : 20 Yb 3+ ,0.5Ho 3+ (NaGdF 4 : 20 Yb 3+ ,0.5Ho 3+ ). More importantly, the stable UC emission with variation of green intensity ratio ΔG% (G% = I 520-570nm /I 500-700nm , ΔG%= (G%) max -(G%) min ) and red intensity ratio ΔR% (R% = I 625-685nm /I 500-700nm , ΔR%= (R%) max -(R%) min ) < 1% was found over 976 nm LD excitation power density (PD) ranging from 1.0 to 5.6 W/cm 2 . Whereas, their variations of ∼6% and 25% are observed at the same excitation PD for NaGdF 4 :20 Yb 3+ ,0.5Ho 3+ and commercial β-NaYF 4 :20 Yb 3+ ,2Er 3+ (NaYF 4 : 20 Yb 3+ ,2Er 3+ ), respectively. The mechanism of green and red UC emissions in LiYF 4 : Yb 3+ ,Ho 3+ as a consequence of energy transfer processes has been briefly discussed taking into account the UC emission kinetics. The highly stable intensity ratio of G% and R% combined with the efficient green UC color hints the potential application of LiYF 4 : Yb 3+ ,Ho 3+ in fluorescent labeling and color display.

To explore highly sensitive luminescent materials , a series of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -codoped Al 2 Mo 3 O 12 microparticles were prepared through a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase structure, light harvest ability, morphology, and upconversion (UC) emission characteristics of these synthesized microparticles were investigated systematically. Excited at 980 nm, glaring visible UC emissions are gained in the developed specimens, in which the optimal doping content for Yb 3+ is 7 mol% and the two-photon absorption process contributes to the UC emission mechanism. Based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technology, the thermometric properties of resultant microparticles are studied by analyzing the temperature-dependent green UC emissions of Er 3+ arising from the thermal coupling energy levels. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of final products are 0.011 K -1 and 1.09% K −1 , respectively, and they are barely influenced by Yb 3+ contents. Besides, via exploring the lifetimes of 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 levels of Er 3+ at various temperatures, the relative sensitivities of resultant microparticles are determined to be 0.27% and 0.26% K −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the newly developed microparticles can be adopted to fabricate fluorescent ink to realize optical anti-counterfeiting and visual temperature monitoring. Our studies demonstrate that Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -codoped Al 2 Mo 3 O 12 microparticles with strong UC emissions possess great potential for multimode visual optical thermometry applications.

Intelligent regulation of energy transfer process among different rare earth ions doped in the matrix is an effective strategy to realize high-performance upconversion (UC) luminescence. Based on this, wheat ears like Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /(Tm 3+ , Ho 3+ ) triple doped YF 3 microrods were fabricated via hydrothermal method , and the morphology, crystal structure, UC luminescence performance dependent on Tm 3+ /Ho 3+ doping concentrations were studied. By comparing with the Yb 3+ , Er 3+ co-doped YF 3 microrods, the UC luminescence intensity is enhanced in Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /(Tm 3+ , Ho 3+ ) triple doped YF 3 samples due to the cross relaxation processes between Er 3+ and Tm 3+ /Ho 3+ . Moreover, red emission is enhanced more significantly than green emission in YF 3 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ , Tm 3+ , which is contrary to that in YF 3 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ , Ho 3+ . The possible energy transfer upconversion mechanism involved is discussed in detail. Meanwhile, an adjustable emission color is easy to achieve via altering the doped Er 3+ /Tm 3+ /Ho 3+ ion concentration . These studies on the UC luminescence enhancement mechanism of Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /(Tm 3+ , Ho 3+ ) triple doped YF 3 microrods are expected to provide a reference for the development of high-efficiency luminescent materials .

To date there is no report on the photoluminescence property in Pr 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped or Pr 3+ single doped ferroelectrics Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 , abbreviated as PMN-PT. This letter presents the efficient upconversion (UC) luminescence in 0.75PMN-0.25PT:1.5%Pr/ y Yb transparent ceramics together with luminescence mechanism. When the transparent ceramics were excited by 980 nm laser, strong visible UC emissions at 491, 529, 539, 623, 649, 685, 710 and 737 nm were detected, besides strong near-infrared down-conversion emissions of Pr 3+ at 1061 nm and of Yb 3+ around 1006 nm. The visible UC emission was found to be a two-photon process and sensitized by Yb 3+ . The intensities of the visible UC emissions saturate at higher pump power above 1.65 W when the Yb 3+ concentration y ≥ 3%. The intensity saturation results from the depletion of ground state population and reverse energy transfer in cross-relaxation way. Relative to the intensities of the red emissions, those of the blue-green emissions decrease remarkably as the Yb 3+ content increases. This interesting phenomenon can be attributed to the higher local symmetry of Pr 3+ sites in the ceramics of higher Yb 3+ content. The various photoluminescence properties and excellent ferroelectric properties make our Pr 3+ /Yb 3+ -doped transparent ceramics promising multifunctional optical luminescence materials.

Environment-friendly Fe 3+ ions as near-infrared (NIR) activators have garnered significant attention in intelligent NIR light sources; however, designing wavelength-tunable and outstanding thermal stability Fe 3+ -doped NIR luminescent materials remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we synthesized a novel garnet-structured NIR phosphor Y 2 CaAl 4 SiO 12 : Fe 3+ , Yb 3+ and investigated its luminescent properties and energy transfer mechanisms. Under 270 nm ultraviolet light excitation, Y 2 CaAl 4 SiO 12 : Fe 3+ demonstrates broadband NIR emission peaking at 803 nm, characterized by a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 107 nm and exhibiting a remarkably high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 91.70 %, which is markedly superior to most reported Fe 3+ doping NIR-emitting materials. Notably, the incorporation of Yb 3+ ions facilitates an efficient energy transfer process from Fe 3+ to Yb 3+ , which not only significantly broadens the emission spectrum but also enhances the thermal stability of Fe 3+ (I 373 K /I 298 K = 59.24 %) compared to the singly Fe 3+ doped sample (I 373 K /I 298 K = 45.30 %). Finally, the optimized Y 2 CaAl 4 SiO 12 : Fe 3+ , Yb 3+ NIR phosphor exhibits promising potential for anti-counterfeiting applications.

The 1.0 μm ultra-short pulse laser is distinguished by its high energy, short pulse width, and intense peak power density, serving various applications in materials processing and biomedicine. Yb ions play a crucial role in this wavelength range, yet achieving high doping levels in commercial Yb-doped silica fibers is challenging due to their dense network structure. Here, we present the design and fabrication of a fluorophosphate (FP) glass with high thermal shock stability (figure of merit is 0.95), achieved through thermodynamic prediction methods, ion field strength analysis, and glass structure theory. By modifying the composition of high-field-strength cations, we not only alter the fundamental properties of the glass but also enhance its thermomechanical performance. Specifically, Yb 3+ -doped Zn(PO 3 ) 2 -Ba(PO 3 ) 2 -AlF 3 -KF FP glass (Yb 10 -ZBAFP10) exhibits a high emission cross-section (0.74×10 −20 cm 2 at ∼1008 nm), a low level of minimum population inversion ( β min =0.09), and minimum pump intensity ( I min =1.75 kW/cm 2 ). Furthermore, it demonstrates a stable fluorescence lifetime within the temperature range of 298 ∼ 473 K. These findings highlight the potential of Yb 3+ -doped FP glass for applications demanding high thermal shock stability, particularly in high repetition rate ultra-short pulse laser systems.

The upconversion luminescence (UCL) materials have the substantial advantages for deeper penetration and detection in tissue imaging and therapy owing to the dominant UCL wave located within the tissue optical transmission window. However, this application is limited by low red UCL efficiency. In this work, we synthesized Bi 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ that exhibits intense red UCL under 980 nm excitation, which is about 5 times as that in conventional Y 2 O 3 sample. The red and green UCL intensity ratio is up to 229.6. Moreover, the red UCL can penetrate 8 mm fresh chicken breast tissue. Not only Bi 2 O 3 host exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity, Bi 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ material also shows enhanced catalytic performance, achieving 91% degradation of methyl orange in 2 h under visible light (VIS). When combined with TiO 2 owned ultraviolet (UV) dominant activity, TiO 2 -modified Bi 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ retains 96% activity under VIS. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of Bi 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ in the near-infrared (NIR) region can also reach 36% within 3 h, implying it is a promising candidate for UV–VIS–NIR broad-spectrum photocatalytic activity. Our study indicates that Bi 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ is an outstanding multifunctional material that integrate strong red emission with capabilities for deep-tissue imaging and broad-spectrum-responsive photocatalysis.
