Ti3+ defect mediated g-C3N4/TiO2 Z-scheme system for enhanced photocatalytic redox performance

Lina Kong,Xintong Zhang,Changhua Wang,Jianping Xu,Xiwen Du,Lan Li

Artificial direct Z-scheme system is promising in solar-fuel production owing to their efficient charge separation and high redox capability. However, direct Z-scheme system suffers from how to construct reasonable interfacial charge transfer channel for selective charge recombination. Here we fabricate a direct Z-scheme system consisting of g-C 3 N 4 crumpled sheet with Ti 3+ -doped TiO 2 nanoparticles via polycondensation of urea with TiO 2 followed by hydrogenated treatment. UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) manifest that the hydrogenated treatment conferred Ti 3+ defect states below the conduction band minimum (CBM) of TiO 2 and improved visible light absorption of the g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3+ -doped TiO 2 composite. The g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3+ -doped TiO 2 exhibits remarkable photocatalytic performance for water splitting and degradation of pollutants than that of g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 , C 3 N 4 , and TiO 2 . The H 2 evolution rates of g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3+ -doped TiO 2 reach up to 1938 and 287 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 under solar-light and visible-light irradiation, which is 3.4 and 2.8 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 . The enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the Ti 3+ defects assistant formation of g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3+ -doped TiO 2 Z-scheme photocatalyst, which results in efficient interfacial charge emigration and separation. Our work points out the critical role of defects in construction of Z-scheme pathways for charge transfer and provides possibilities for developing the other efficient photocatalysts.

Facile preparation of Z-scheme CdSAgTiO2 composite for the improved photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity

Wei Zhao,Jincheng Liu,Zhenyu Deng,Jinhong Zhang,Zhongxiang Ding,Yanxiong Fang

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is a prospective approach to solve the problem about energy crisis by fossil fuel combustion . As the good candidate to generate hydrogen under visible light irradiation , the rapid charge recombination and easy photocorrosion of pure CdS nanomaterials limited its hydrogen generation activity and photocatalytic stability. Here we constructed a novel ternary Z-scheme CdS Ag TiO 2 composite based on CdS nanowires by a three-step process to solve this problem. Compared with CdS TiO 2 and CdS, the Z-scheme CdS Ag TiO 2 composites could obviously extend the light-absorption region, accelerate the transfer rate of charge-separation, and possess stronger redox capability. The prepared Z-scheme CdS Ag TiO 2 composites show high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 1.91 mmol h −1  g −1 , which is 1.50 and 2.45 times that of CdS TiO 2 heterojunction and pure CdS nanowires. The Z-scheme photocatalytic system exhibits the synergetic effects due to more efficient charge transfer and surface plasmon resonance absorption. Ag nanoparticles used as electron mediator could decrease the recombination of the photocarriers, alter the path of charge transfer and suppress the photocorrosion. This work opens up a new way for the novel Z-scheme photocatalytic systems that suppress the photocorrosion of CdS, and has a promising application in the photocatalytic water splitting.

Constructing a Titanium Silicon Molecular Sieve-Based Z-Scheme Heterojunction with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Mengxia Ma,Xu Yan,Yanli Mao,Haiyan Kang,Qun Yan,Jieqiang Zhou,Zhongxian Song,Han Zhu,Leqi Cui,Yanna Li

Titanium silicon molecular sieve (TS-1) is an oxidation catalyst that possesses a long lifetime of charge transfer excited state, high Ti utilization efficiency, large specific surface area, and good adsorption property; therefore, TS-1 acts as a Ti-based photocatalyst candidate. In this work, TS-1 coupled Bi2MoO6 (TS-1/BMO) photocatalysts were fabricated via a facile hydrothermal route. Interestingly, the optimized TS-1/BMO-1.0 catalyst exhibited a decent photodegradation property toward tetracycline hydrochloride (85.49% in 120 min) under the irradiation of full spectrum light, which were 4.38 and 1.76 times compared to TS-1 and BMO, respectively. The enhanced photodegradation property of the TS-1/BMO-1.0 catalyst could be attributed to the reinforced light-harvesting capacity of the photocatalyst, high charge mobility, and suitable band structure for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation. In addition, the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by the TS-1/BMO-1.0 catalyst was reasonably proposed based on the band structure, trapping, and ESR tests. This research provided feasible ideas for the design and construction of high-efficiency photocatalysts for contaminant degradation.

Construction of Z-scheme ZnO/g-C3N4 photocatalytic systems for degradation of dyeing wastewater

Lijuan Wang,Yinghan Li,Jun Cai,Shuqing Liu,Zifan Yuan,Depeng Gao

A novel heterogeneous nanocomposite photocatalyst ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 was fabricated by secondary high-temperature calcination using g-C 3 N 4 and ZnO as raw materials and characterized by XRD , SEM , TEM, EDS , FT-IR, Zeta potential , UV-Vis and XPS . The results displayed that the ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 components were tightly bound, evenly distributed and significantly reduced in size, which could provide more active sites. The heterogeneous types, photocatalytic performance, degradation mechanism of ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 for dyeing wastewater were speculated by REDOX potential, heterojunction , and quenching experiments. The degradation efficiency of ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 on MB was much higher compared with that of single ZnO, g-C 3 N 4 and the mechanical mixture of ZnO and g-C 3 N 4 , which can reach more than 95% at 60 min. The degradation rate was also significantly improved, with the degradation rate exceeding 50% at 20 min. The composite ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 could degraded 90% MB after 5 cycles. The quenching experiment showed that hydroxyl (·OH) and photogenerated hole (h + ) played the main role in the reaction process. It was confirmed that the prepared ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 formed a Z-scheme photocatalytic system by examining the transfer paths of e - and h + in various types of heterojunction and contrasting the CB and VB energy levels with the REDOX potentials of ZnO and g-C 3 N 4 . The Z-Scheme ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst has the characteristics of stability, reusability, and no by-product, making it an ideal choice for environmental purification.

Nanorod Heterodimer-Shaped CuS/ZnxCd1−xS Heteronanocrystals with Z-Scheme Mechanism for Enhanced Photocatalysis

Lei Yang,Lihui Wang,Han Xiao,Di Luo,Jiangzhi Zi,Guisheng Li,Zichao Lian

The efficient separation of photo-generated electrons and holes is significantly importance for enhancing photocatalytic performance. However, there are few reports on precisely constructing interfaces within a single nanocrystal to investigate the mechanism of photoinduced carrier transfer. In this study, nanorod heterodimer-structured CuS/ZnxCd1−xS heteronanocrystals (CuS/ZnCdS HNCs) were successfully synthesized as a typical model to explore the photoinduced carrier dynamics in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The CuS/ZnCdS HNCs exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of 146 mmol h⁻1g⁻1under visible light irradiation, which is higher than most reported values. Moreover, after 15 h of hydrogen production cycling tests, we found that the material maintained high hydrogen production performance, indicating excellent stability. The CuS/ZnCdS HNCs achieved an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 69.2% at 380 nm, which is the highest value reported so far for ZnCdS- or CuS-based photocatalysts. The remarkable activity and stability of the CuS/ZnCdS HNCs were attributed to the strong internal electric field (IEF) and Z-scheme mechanism, which facilitate efficient charge separation, as demonstrated by in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses. This discovery provides a new approach for constructing Z-scheme heterogeneous copper-based nanocomposites within nanocrystals and offers guidance for improving photocatalytic activity.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of phenolic pollutants using MIL-100(Fe)@Zn3In2S6 Z-scheme heterojunction

Shuyu Chen,Zhengkai Wu,Xueying Cheng,Lu Chen,Yunning Chen,Yingna Guo,Changhua Wang,Qingkun Shang

In this work, we used a simple hydrothermal method to in-situ grow Zn 3 In 2 S 6 on MIL-100(Fe) octahedra, and obtained a MIL-100(Fe)@Zn 3 In 2 S 6 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. We systematically studied its performance in degrading phenol and p-nitrophenol (PNP) under visible light. MIL-ZIS 6 -2 can remove 89.1 % of phenol within 120 min and nearly 100 % of PNP within 60 min. Its photocatalytic activity to the degradation of phenol is 30.7 times and 1.7 times higher than that of MIL-100(Fe) and Zn 3 In 2 S 6 , respectively. And the photocatalytic activity to degrade PNP is 18.2 times and 1.4 times higher than MIL-100(Fe) and Zn 3 In 2 S 6 . Further research was conducted on its band structure and photocatalytic response mechanism through photoelectric performance, ultraviolet photo-electron spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance spectrometer testing. The results showed that the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction not only increased the specific surface area of the composite photocatalyst, enabling it to provide more reaction sites, but also effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons, improving the redox ability of the photocatalyst. This work provides a new perspective for constructing efficient Zn 3 In 2 S 6 -based composite photocatalysts and addressing environmental issues.

Construction of novel Mn0.2Cd0.8S/Bi4O5Br2 Z-scheme heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic dye degradation

Zheng Nan,Gou Jialin,Lan Meng,Dong Xiaoli,Liu Yujun,Du Jinpeng

Photocatalytic technology has received widespread attention as an effective means of treating organic pollutants in wastewater, but the development of effective and sustainable photocatalysts remains a serious challenge. In this study, a novel Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S (MCS)/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 (BOB) heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a two-step solvothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the MCS/BOB heterojunction photocatalyst for degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) is significantly enhanced relative to Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S and Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 . When the molar content of Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S was 15% of Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 , the prepared 15% MCS/BOB had the best photocatalytic performance toward RhB with the degradation rate of 91.7% under 60 min of visible light irradiation. The apparent rate constant of 15% MCS/BOB is 10 and 7 times higher than that of Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S and Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 , respectively. The excellent photocatalytic performance is associated with the increased specific surface area, extended light absorption range, and proper construction of Z-scheme heterojunction that facilitate effective charge separation and excellent redox capacity. In addition, the heterojunction photocatalyst shows remarkable photocatalytic stability. This study constructs a novel and effective Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst and promotes the exploration of photocatalyst in the purification of organic wastewater.

Beyond Tradition: A MOF-On-MOF Cascade Z-Scheme Heterostructure for Augmented CO2 Photoreduction

Ruipeng Jin,Rui Li,Ming-Li Ma,Da-Yu Chen,Jian-Yu Zhang,Zheng-He Xie,Li-Feng Ding,Yabo Xie,Jian-Rong Li

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are rigorously investigated as promising candidates for CO 2 capture and conversion. MOF-on-MOF heterostructures integrate bolstered charger carrier separation with the intrinsic advantages of MOF components, exhibiting immense potential to substantially escalate the efficiency of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR). However, the structural and compositional complexity poses significant challenges to the controllable development of these heterostructures. Herein, a conventional MOF-on-MOF nanocomposite is readily optimized from a type II heterojunction to a state-of-the-art cascade Z-scheme configuration via the encapsulation of Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs), establishing synergistic MOF-MOF and metal-MOF heterojunctions with reinforced built-in electric field. A cascade electron flow is thus propelled, vigorously separating the photogenerated charge carriers and profoundly extending their lifetimes. Collectively, the photocatalytic activity of the cascade Z-scheme is drastically promoted, exhibiting a nearly quintuple enhancement in the CO production rate over the original type II heterostructure. Moreover, the anti-sintering capacity of the developed nanocomposite is unveiled, elucidating its simultaneously improved activity and stability. These findings present unprecedented regulation over the configuration of a MOF-on-MOF heterojunction, substantially enriching the fundamental understanding and rational design strategies of composite materials.

A hollow core-shell TiO2/NiCo2S4 Z-Scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution

Mao-Jin Ran,Meng Wang,Zhi-Yi Hu,Yi-Fu Huang,Lin-Dong Wang,Lu Wu,Man-Man Yuan,Jian Zhang,Bei Li,Gustaaf Van Tendeloo,Yu Li,Bao-Lian Su

Constructing heterojunctions have received significant attention in photocatalysis because of their efficient separation of photogenerated carriers and improving light utilization efficiency. Bimetallic sulfides (e.g. NiCo 2 S 4 ) are applied in electrocatalysis and supercapacitors that can be coupled with TiO 2 to form a heterojunction . Owing to the staggered energy band arrangement between TiO 2 and NiCo 2 S 4 , the establishing of a Z-scheme heterojunction between them is expected to enhance the carrier separation efficiency and reduce the sulfide photo-corrosion. However, the application of NiCo 2 S 4 in photocatalysis and studies on the mechanism of the TiO 2 /NiCo 2 S 4 Z-scheme heterojunction have seldom been reported. In this work, we obtained a hollow core-shell TiO 2 /NiCo 2 S 4 Z-scheme photocatalyst through a solvothermal method for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). The PHE rate of the optimized TiO 2 /NiCo 2 S 4 -0.3 is 8.55 mmol g − 1 h − 1 , approximately 34 times higher than pure TiO 2 , 94 times higher than pure NiCo 2 S 4 . The remarkable photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the hollow structure and the in-situ constructed Z-scheme heterojunction. The photogenerated charge transfer mechanism is revealed by hydroxyl radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization. The in-situ construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction not only enhances the efficiency of separating the photogenerated carriers but also reduces the photo-corrosion of NiCo 2 S 4 . This study proposes an effective strategy for the design of TiO 2 -based Z-scheme heterojunctions and the application of NiCo 2 S 4 in photocatalysis .

Enhanced Photo-Fenton Removal of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride via BP/Bi2MoO6 Z-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalyst

Jian Feng,Xiaohui Li,Xia Ran,Li Wang,Bo Xiao,Rong Li,Guangwei Feng

Fenton oxidation technology utilizing hydrogen peroxide is recognized as an effective method for producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) to facilitate the degradation of antibiotics. However, the requirement for strongly acidic conditions during this process significantly restricts its broader applicability. In this study, we synthesized black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets by exposing the {010} crystal planes and then constructed a 0D/2D BP/Bi2MoO6(PBMO) heterojunction to function as a Fenton catalyst. The PBMO-75 heterojunction exhibited a remarkable increase in photo-Fenton catalytic activity towards oxytetracycline (OTC) under neutral conditions, achieving catalytic efficiencies that were 20 and 8 times greater than those of BP and Bi2MoO6(BMO), respectively. This can be attributed to its strong absorption of visible light, the establishment of an internal electric field (IEF) at the interface, and the implementation of a Z-scheme catalytic mechanism. Additionally, the photo-Fenton system was further improved in OTC degradation through the continuous conversion of Mo6+/Mo5+under visible light irradiation in conjunction with H2O2. Based on ERS, XPS, and active species trapping experiments, we propose a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism for PBMO. This research offers compelling evidence that 0D/2D Z-scheme heterojunctions are promising candidates for the photo-Fenton treatment of antibiotic contaminants.

Degradation of metronidazole by Bi3O4Br/MIL–88B(Fe) Z–scheme heterojunction: Performance and mechanisms

Shaoyan Zhang,Wen Zhang,Xinyao Zhao,Xin Li,Jian Wang,Ji Li,Yanqing Liu,Xueying Cheng,Renquan Guan,Junkai Zhang

This study reports the synthesis of MIL–88B(Fe)/Bi 3 O 4 Br, an efficient Z -scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for metronidazole (MNZ) degradation. The composite achieved a degradation efficiency of 95.2 % under visible light irradiation, outperforming the single-component catalysts (MIL–88B(Fe): 39.0 %, Bi 3 O 4 Br: 71.5 %). Photocatalytic treatment reduced biotoxicity, indicating its potential for use and environmental safety. The degradation process of MNZ was revealed by integrating LC–MS data with Fukui function analysis. Photoelectrochemical findings indicate that MIL–88B(Fe) enhanced efficiency, facilitated charge separation, and augmented the spectral response of Bi 3 O 4 Br. The Z–Scheme charge transfer and the function of the built–in electric field were validated by in situ XPS. DFT calculations revealed synergistic effects in the composite system, enhancing the adsorption and photocatalytic properties for MNZ. This study proposed a thorough degradation process that underpinned the development of effective photocatalysts.

Z-Scheme LaFeO3/Cd0.7Zn0.3S Heterojunction Based on 3DOM LaFeO3 Perovskite for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Activity

Wuxi zhang,Yingzhu Zi,Xinmin Bai,Imarn Khan,Asad ullah,Yue Liu,Anjun Huang,Jianbei Qiu,Yangke Cun,Zhengwen Yang

ABSTRACT The narrow band gap semiconductor LaFeO 3 with ABO 3 perovskite structure has been deeply studied in the field of photocatalysis due to its good thermal stability, chemical stability, photoelectric properties and suitable band position. The inverse opal structure gives the material a large specific surface area and increases the adsorption area and active site of the catalyst. In this work, it is reported for the first time that perovskite LaFeO 3 inverse opal was applied to photocatalytic hydrogen production. The Cd 0.7 Zn 0.3 S QDs were deposited on the skeleton wall of LaFeO 3 inverse opal to construct LaFeO 3 /Cd 0.7 Zn 0.3 S binary heterojunction catalyst. The LaFeO 3 3DOM can effectively increase the contact area with Cd 0.7 Zn 0.3 S QDs with an increase in specific surface area, and the multiple scattering effect improves the efficiency of light utilization. The introduction of Zn 2+ ions regulate the band gap position of Cd 0.7 Zn 0.3 S QDs and increases the thermodynamic reduction ability of photo generated electrons. The Z-type heterojunction effect formed by LaFeO 3 inverse opal and Cd 0.7 Zn 0.3 S QDs facilitates the separation and transmission of photo generated charges. The LaFeO 3 /Cd 0.7 Zn 0.3 S heterojunction catalysts achieved a hydrogen production performance of 277.48 μmol/g/h due to the large specific surface area of 3DOM, good light capture ability, band gap regulation of element doping, and efficient charge separation synergistic effect of heterojunction. This work provides new insights into the design and manufacture of perovskite-type 3DOM heterojunction photocatalysts.
