In the field of electrolyte design for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), additives containing hydroxyl have been demonstrated to effectively modulate the solvation structure of Zn2+. However, reported studies typically focus solely on the effectiveness of hydroxyl while neglecting the issues that emerge during solvation structure regulation. The strong electron-attracting capability of Zn2+ attracts electrons from the oxygen in hydroxyl, thereby weakening the strength of hydroxyl, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is also pronounced. This work innovatively reveals the limitation of hydroxyl-containing additives and proposes a synergistic regulation strategy based on hybrid additives. Arginine with a high isoelectric point is introduced into the electrolyte system containing hydroxyl additives. The protonation effect and electrostatic attraction of arginine enable it to absorb protons at the anode released by the weakened hydroxyl, thereby compensating for the limitation of hydroxyl additives. Under the synergistic action of hybrid additives, the Zn|Zn battery achieved stable deposition/stripping for over 1200 hours under 10 mA cm-2 and 10 mAh cm-2. Moreover, the Zn|Cu battery cycled for over 570 hours with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.82%. This study presents a pioneering perspective for the further application of AZIBs.

Sustainable management of plant bacterial diseases calls for delivery systems that minimize reliance on conventional synthetic pesticides while improving deposition efficiency, on-demand release, and environmental compatibility. This study employs a coordination-driven hollowing strategy to construct interface-optimized hollow metal–phenolic nanocarrier (NaSA@PDA@ZIF-8), achieving synergistic loading of sodium salicylate and Zn 2+ . PDA-induced etching of ZIF-8 generates a well-defined hollow architecture while enhancing hydrophilicity and colloidal stability. The optimized nanocarrier, obtained via Box–Behnken response surface design, achieves a NaSA loading content of 23.90%. Regarding interfacial performance, the carrier exhibits significantly optimized wetting behavior with a contact angle reduced to 51.15°, enhanced dynamic spreading speed, and outstanding leaf adhesion and rain-wash resistance, ensuring effective retention and utilization in complex field environments. Under simulated bacterial wilt conditions in tobacco (acidic pH 5.0 and elevated temperature of 35 °C), the system exhibited enhanced release behavior. The cumulative release of NaSA reached 81.72% and 83.40%, while Zn 2+ release reached 23.19% and 18.72%, indicating good responsiveness to disease-relevant microenvironmental conditions. Its antibacterial activity (EC 50 = 17.80 mg·L -1 ) is likely associated with multiple contributing factors, including Zn 2+ release, potential ROS generation mediated by PDA, and NaSA-related activation of plant defense responses. This work demonstrates a hollow metal–phenolic nanoplatform that integrates interfacial adhesion, stimuli-responsive co-delivery, and biosafety, providing a multifunctional reference model for green plant protection. An in-situ polymerized PEGDA hydrogel electrolyte is developed for AZIBs. • Ether groups disrupt water's hydrogen-bond network to suppress side reactions. • Carbonyl groups regulate Zn 2+ flux and enable dendrite-free deposition. • An Ah-level pouch cell validates the practical applicability of this work. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising for low-cost, safe, and eco-friendly energy storage. Vanadium-based cathode materials have garnered intense research interest due to their inherently high specific capacity. However, their practical applications are severely hindered by stability issues, including cathode dissolution, hydrogen evolution reactions, and zinc dendrite formation. Here, we report a novel in-situ polymerized hydrogel electrolyte based on polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA-HGE) to tackle these challenges. The abundant ether oxygen groups preferentially coordinate with water, disrupting its intrinsic hydrogen-bond networks and thus suppress water-induced parasitic hydrogen evolution and Vanadium-based cathode dissolution. Simultaneously, the carbonyl groups served as zincophilic sites not only facilitate ordered Zn 2+ transport but also homogenize interfacial Zn 2+ flux, thereby effectively preventing dendritic zinc growth. Meanwhile, the PEGDA chain can partially anchor OTf − , thereby suppressing its migration. As a result, the PEGDA-HGE delivers a high ionic conductivity (9.95 mS cm −1 ) and a large Zn 2+ transference number of 0.69. The Zn||Zn cells demonstrate exceptional cycling stability for 4380 h at 1 mA cm −2 /1 mAh cm −2 . Zn||V 2 O 3 full cells exhibit a high specific capacity of 454 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and maintain a reversible capacity of 279 mAh g −1 across 500 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . Notably, an Ah-level pouch cell achieves a high reversible capacity of 2642 mAh with stable operation for 50 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . This work introduces a novel class of polymerizable monomer and achieves a significant advance in the fabrication of dual-functional hydrogel electrolytes for long-life aqueous AZIBs and Ah-level scalability. A novel dual functional in-situ polymerized PEGDA-based hydrogel electrolyte is designed for aqueous zinc-ion batteries with stable cyclability and Ah-level scalability. Abundant ether moieties immobilize free water, reduce water activity, and break H-bond networks to impede H + ion migration, thus suppressing cathode dissolution and HER/corrosion at Zn anode. Carbonyl groups served as zincophilic sites optimize Zn 2+ ion flux and effectively inhibit dendrite formation. Download: Download high-res image (206KB) Download: Download full-size image

Despite the high specific capacity of P′2-NaxMnO2 (NMO), its practical application is severely hindered by rapid capacity decay caused by drastic structural evolution. Herein, a P′2-[Na0.57KxZn0.10-x]Mn0.90Ti0.10O2 (NKxZMTO) cathode featuring K+ and Zn2+ as pillar cations is developed to mitigate O2–-O2– electrostatic repulsion and suppress detrimental phase transition. Physicochemical characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that K+ and Zn2+ co-occupy the Nae site, acting as inert pillars in the Na layers. While NMO undergoes an abrupt and irreversible OP4-P′2-P″2 triphase transition, NK0.02ZMTO maintains a high fraction of P layers within the OP4 phase and exhibits a mild and reversible P′2-OP4 biphase transition. This stabilized interlayer evolution arises from the combined effects of K+ and Zn2+: K+ enlarges the Na layer spacing owing to its large ionic radius, while Zn2+ reduces the electron density on O2– through its high positive charge, thereby simultaneously mitigating O2–-O2– electrostatic repulsion in accordance with Coulomb’s law. Benefiting from this structural stabilization, NK0.02ZMTO delivers superior cyclability (99.2% capacity retention after 150 cycles at 100 mA g–1) and a high specific capacity of 180 mAh g–1 at 10 mA g–1. This work provides an innovative strategy for designing highly stable cathode materials.

Zinc metal is an ideal anode for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and inherent safety. However, its practical application is hindered by dendrite growth and side reactions at the zinc anode/electrolyte interface, which severely degrade the cycling stability of AZIBs. Herein, an interfacial layer based on a quaternary ammonium functionalized polymer layer with iodide ions is proposed and applied to zinc anode surface to simultaneously mitigate dendrite growth and side reactions by optimizing Zn2+ transport and deposition behavior. The iodide ions serve as zincophilic sites that enhance the interfacial affinity toward Zn2+ and facilitate Zn2+ desolvation. The quaternary ammonium groups contribute to electrostatic regulation of interfacial ion distribution, thereby reducing anion participation near the Zn surface. This dual functional mechanism works synergistically homogenize Zn2+ flux and effectively mitigate dendrite growth. In addition, the uniform Zn2+ flux combined with improved surface hydrophilicity promotes the formation of a compatible and electrochemically stable interface on the zinc anode surface. Consequently, the QP@Zn||QP@Zn symmetric battery achieves a stable cycling lifespan over 2000 h at 5 mA cm–2/1 mAh cm–2, and maintains excellent rate performance at 15 mA cm–2. The QP@Zn||NVO full battery retains a specific capacity of 215 mAh g–1 after 1500 cycles at 5 A g–1. By integrating zincophilic iodide ions, quaternary ammonium groups, and a hydrophilic framework into the molecular design of the protective layer, this study not only provides feasible strategies for constructing high performance AZIBs, but also offers profound insights for regulating the zinc anode/electrolyte interface.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have demonstrated remarkable advantages in gas separation applications through the synergistic integration of polymeric matrices and nanostructured reinforcements. While these advanced composite thin-film materials exhibit substantial potential for CO 2 separation, their industrial-scale implementation confronts threefold challenges: elevated manufacturing costs, interfacial compatibility optimization between nanofillers and polymer matrices, and performance enhancement requirements for achieving superior separation efficiency. In this study, the green and economical nanofiller UIO-66-(COOH) 2 (denoted as UC) was strategically selected. A novel strategy involving synergistic modification using Zn 2+ and polyvinylamine (PVAm) was developed to address the critical challenge of severe particle agglomeration and sedimentation. This phenomenon, caused by intense electrostatic interactions between the strongly negatively charged UC and the cationic polymer PVAm during surface modification, was effectively mitigated through the proposed cooperative modification mechanism, resulting in the successful synthesis of P@UC-Zn exhibiting exceptional dispersibility and enhanced compatibility with the polymeric matrix. The fabricated P@UC-Zn-PVAm/mPSf MMMs containing 35 wt% filler exhibited remarkable CO 2 permeance (3250 GPU) and selectivity (166) under feed gas conditions (CO 2 /N 2 = 15/85 vol%, feed pressure: 2 bar). Furthermore, the optimized MMMs demonstrated robust operational stability in simulated flue gas tests and showed potential for applications in carbon dioxide-methane and carbon dioxide-hydrogen separations.

Three-dimensional (3D) self-assembled quantum dot (QD) aerogels have attracted attention due to the combined properties of both QDs and porous materials. However, the difficulty and complexity of structural composition control limit the practical application of 3D self-assembled QDs. Hence, convenient, available and multifunction QD aerogels need to be explored to promote broader practical applications. Herein, we propose a universal and facile self-assembly method of copper indium selenium (CISe) QD aerogels based on coordination interaction between Zn2+ and carboxyl. Both experiments and Monte Carlo simulations indicate that QDs are aggregated into oligomers by Zn2+, and then the oligomers are gradually interconnected to each other to form a 3D network as the concentration of Zn2+ increases. Moreover, Zn2+-induced 3D self-assembled aerogel could be depolymerized by EDTA reversibly. In combination with CISe QDs, Zn-CISe aerogel has been successfully applied in green pollution-free environment-friendly anti-counterfeiting and encryption systems.

Synchronous photocatalytic water splitting and the reforming of a biomass-derived feedstock to generate hydrogen and high-value-added chemicals make full utilization of the biomass-water-splitting redox reaction; however, limited successes in this regard have been reported. Herein, incompletely polymerized graphitic carbon nitride co-doped with zinc/oxygen atoms (Zn 2 /O@IP- g -CN) was prepared via a step-by-step low-temperature calcination process with the assistance of melamine and zinc phthalocyanine, which successfully resulted in simultaneous photocatalytic water splitting and the reforming of biomass-derived monosaccharides to produce hydrogen (11436.7 μmol g −1 h −1 ) and lactic acid (92.6 %), respectively. Zn 2 /O@IP- g -CN exhibits a fast separation/migration rate and low resistance compared to those of pure CN, resulting in Zn 2 /O@IP- g -CN showing enhanced photocatalytic activity. The hydrogen release rate of 86.8 % and lactic acid yield of 89.0 % were retained compared to initial values when Zn 2 /O@IP- g -CN was reused in 5 th cycles. Poisoning experiments indicated that 1 O 2 , ·O 2 - , ·OH, and h + were all beneficial for lactic acid production.

Abstract The C-terminal epitope imprinted polymers on the silica were prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) strategy with C-terminal nonapeptide of cytochrome c (Cyt c) as the template. 4-cyano-4-(phenylcarbonothioylthio) phetanoic acid was immobilized on the silica as a chain transfer agent to regulate the polymerization of the imprinted layer to enhance the recognition performance of the imprinted materials for the peptide and target protein. Additionally, zinc methacrylate was used as a functional monomer to form the imprinted sites through the synergistic effect of Zn 2+ chelating, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction, which further improved the recognition between polymers and protein. The molecularly imprinted polymers prepared with RAFT strategy show good recognition for the epitope peptide and Cyt c with imprinting factors of 7.96 and 6.17, respectively, which is higher than those prepared without RAFT strategy. Furthermore, the imprinted polymers have a good binding capacity and imprinting factor for Cyt c in multi-proteins selective recognition and have good reusability. The performance of Cyt c recognition in bovine serum by the epitope imprinted polymers was calculated by HPLC and the results demonstrated the well selectivity and potential application for Cyt c recognition in biological sample. Diosgenin (DIO) is the active ingredient of Dioscorea species. The interaction of DIO with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated through spectroscopic methods under simulated physiological conditions. The fluorescence quenching data revealed that the binding of DIO to BSA without or with Co2+ or Zn2+ was a static quenching process. The presence of Co2+ or Zn2+ both increased the static quenching constants KSV and the binding affinity for the BSA-DIO system. In the sight of the competitive experiment and the negative values of ΔH0 and ΔS0, DIO bound to site I of BSA mainly through the hydrogen bond and Van der Waals’ force. In addition, the conformational changes of BSA were studied by Raman spectra, which revealed that the secondary structure of BSA and microenvironment of the aromatic residues were changed by DIO. The Raman spectra analysis indicated that the changes of conformations, disulfide bridges, and the microenvironment of Tyr, Trp residues of BSA induced by DIO with Co2+ or Zn2+ were different from that without Co2+ or Zn2+.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most devastating acute diseases. Zn 2+ has been verified plays a crucial role in SCI repair, however, how to continuously release zinc ions at the lesion site is still a cutting-edge challenge. Therefore, it is urgent to design a novel nanoplatform for promoting SCI repair with multifunction of controlled release of Zn 2+ and regulating ROS microenvironment of mitochondrion. Herein, we propose a protocol of preparing NIR sensitive ZnO quantum dots (QDs) decorated MXene hydrogel for SCI repair. TEM and EDS mapping showed that the ZnO QDs were uniformly distributed on the Mxene nanosheets. Catalase (CAT) analysis showed that the ZnO-Ti 3 C 2 nano enzymes could effectively scavenge ROS. Molecular biology studies showed that ZnO-Ti 3 C 2 @H repaired mitochondrial function by scavenging ROS with a clearance rate of up to 80 %. Neuronal apoptosis was subsequently reduced, and nerves and blood vessels were regenerated. NIR irradiation warmed the injury site to 42.9 °C, which enabled rapid enrichment of Zn 2+ at the lesion site. Footprinting and pathology experiments have shown that it improves functional recovery after injury and results in near-normal BMS scores. These results suggest that this multifunctional type of material incorporating NIR controlled release of Zn 2+ provides a promising strategy for promoting SCI repair.

Conventional electrolyte additives often suffer from insufficient zincophilic/hydrophilic sites and limited molecular dimensions, constraining their regulation capability. Herein, we investigate D-lactitol (LAC), a super polyol additive featuring nine uniformly distributed hydroxyl groups and extended molecular length of 7.605 Å. Abundant zincophilic/hydrophilic sites enable LAC to concurrently coordinate three Zn 2+ solvation sheaths while maintaining interactions with surrounding free water molecules through remaining hydroxyls. Moreover, vertically oriented adsorption of LAC molecules on Zn anode surface expands inner Helmholtz plane from 1.5 Å to 8 Å. The unique adsorption geometry and sterically distributed hydroxyl groups bring about physical blocking, chemical screening, Zn 2+ flux homogenization, and structural resilience. These effects collectively inhibit water and SO 4 2− access, guide dominant Zn (002) plane deposition, promote uniform transport of high-flux Zn 2+ . Consequently, LAC extends cycling lifetime of Zn||Zn symmetric cells from 27 h to 1582 h at 10 mA cm −2 /1 mAh cm −2 and from 24 h to 310 h at 20 mA cm −2 /20 mAh cm −2 , and achieves stable cycling for 326 h at a high depth of discharge (58.07 %). In Zn||Cu asymmetric cell, over 5420 cycles, LAC maintains an exceptional average Coulombic efficiency of 99.74 %. Furthermore, LAC enhances cycling stability and rate performance of Zn||MnVO full cells. This study advances molecular engineering of electrolyte additives for advanced Zn anodes.
