High quality blue emitting quantum dots (QDs) are regarded as promising nanomaterials for lasers, photovoltaic cells and displays. However, few reports realize high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY), narrow emission band width and pure blue emitting (450∼460 nm) simultaneously. Herein we propose a facile one-step synthesis of thick shell blue emitting CdZnS/ZnS QDs. ZnS shell was overcoated on the prepared cores by directly introducing zinc oleate/S TBP solution (zinc oleate powder and S dissolved in TBP) into mixture without any purification steps and the thickness of ZnS shell was controlled by adjusting the adding amount of zinc oleate/S TBP solution. The optimal QDs with ten monolayers of ZnS shell exhibit pure blue light (∼455 nm) with narrow line width (full width half maximum, FWHM 17.2 nm) and high photoluminescent quantum yield (QY) (92%). Due to the thick ZnS shell, nonradiative recombination of the QD solids is suppressed efficiently.

Understanding the surface characteristic-optical property relationship of Cu-In-Zn-S (CIZS) quantum dots (QDs) is necessary for tuning the optoelectronic performances, and the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of CIZS QDs prepared in aqueous solution are still relative low compared with that of obtained in organic phase, which seriously restricts their applications. Herein, an efficient method was proposed to prepare CIZS/ZnS/PVP composites and their application in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) was investigated. CIZS QDs were synthesized through hydrothermal process with the assistance of ionic liquid (IL), which could enhance the PL performance and reduce the reaction time simultaneously. The effects of hydrothermal temperature and time on the phase composition, morphology, and optical properties of CIZS QDs were systematically investigated. The results showed that the BF 4 − anion played a crucial role in boosting the emission property of CIZS QDs owing to the effective reduction of dangling bonds on the surface of QDs, which induced by the corrosion of F − deriving from the decomposition of BF 4 − . The surface modulation led to the improvement of PLQY from 6.2% to 8.4%. In addition, the PLQY of QDs was further improved to 31.2% by coating with ZnS shell around CIZS cores. Furthermore, highly luminescent CIZS/ZnS/PVP composites were prepared to eliminate the aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching effect, which was beneficial to the application in WLEDs. Consequently, a WLED achieved the color rending index (CRI) of 87.2, correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4977 K, and luminous efficacy (LE) of 90.11 lm/W by using the orange-yellow CIZS/ZnS/PVP composites and green Lu 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ phosphors as the color conversion layer, suggesting the potential for solid state lighting application.

A novel hollow ZnS–CdS nanocage-based molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical (ZnS–CdS/rMIP PEC) sensor was designed for sensitive detection of oxytetracycline (OTC). O-phenylenediamine was electropolymerized onto hollow ZnS–CdS nanocages to form a polymer film, and then OTC molecules were imprinted on the polymer film through hydrogen bonding . When OTC was eluted, many specific recognition sites were formed on the polymer membrane for detecting OTC in samples. It is worth noting that the rhombohedral dodecahedral structure of hollow ZnS–CdS nanocage can provide large specific surface area, allowing more OTC molecules to be imprinted into the polymer film. Moreover, the unique hollow structure and the heterojunction formed by ZnS and CdS can significantly enhance the photocurrent response. Furthermore, molecular imprint polymer (MIP) technology greatly improves the selectivity and sensitivity of the constructed PEC sensor for detection of OTC. Under optimal conditions, the ZnS–CdS/rMIP PEC sensor has prominent linear relationship in the range of OTC concentration from 1 nmol L −1 to 3 μmol L −1 , and the detection limit is 0.10 nmol L −1 (S/N = 3). It is gratifying that the fabricated ZnS–CdS/rMIP PEC sensor displays excellent selectivity for OTC detection when interferences with similar structure exist. It also exhibits superior reproducibility and stability as well as high recovery in the investigation of actual water samples. The combination of PEC and MIP technology will provide significant reference value for effective and rapid detection of other pollutants in the environment.

Infrared solar cells that utilize low-bandgap colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising devices to enhance the utilization of solar energy by expanding the harvested photons of common photovoltaics into the infrared region. However, the present synthesis of PbS QDs cannot produce highly efficient infrared solar cells. Here, a general synthesis is developed for low-bandgap PbS QDs (0.65–1 eV) via cation exchange from ZnS nanorods (NRs). First, ZnS NRs are converted to superlattices with segregated PbS domains within each rod. Then, sulfur precursors are released via the dissolution of the ZnS NRs during the cation exchange, which promotes size focusing of PbS QDs. PbS QDs synthesized through this new method have the advantages of high monodispersity, ease-of-size control, in situ passivation of chloride, high stability, and a “clean” surface. Infrared solar cells based on these PbS QDs with different bandgaps are fabricated, using conventional ligand exchange and device structure. All of the devices produced in this manner show excellent performance, showcasing the high quality of the PbS QDs. The highest performance of infrared solar cells is achieved using ≈0.95 eV PbS QDs, exhibiting an efficiency of 10.0% under AM 1.5 solar illumination, a perovskite-filtered efficiency of 4.2%, and a silicon-filtered efficiency of 1.1%.

Sialic acid (SA), known as N -acetyl neuraminic acid, is a natural 9-carbomonosaccharide derivative. SA has been widely applied in the early diagnosis of diseases as therapeutic target. However, the abundance of SA is very low in biological samples, which is usually interfered by the similar molecules coexisting at high abundance. Combining the advantages of high selectivity and specificity of molecularly imprinted technology, high specific surface area of mesoporous materials and excellent optical properties of quantum dots, we chose Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots as signal elements, and sialic acid as the template molecule. KH-4-MAPB with recognition ability to SA was synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using thiolene click reaction as functional monomer. Based on the principle of boron affinity, molecularly imprinted polymers with highly ordered mesoporous structure were prepared, and the structure and fluorescence properties of fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers were studied. FT-IR, XRD, TEM and nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the molecularly imprinted polymers. The results showed that the prepared molecularly imprinted polymers had highly ordered mesoporous structure and a large number of imprinted holes, which ensured the specific selectivity of the molecularly imprinted polymers. The fluorescence properties of MIMPs were characterized and analyzed by fluorescence spectra, equilibrium adsorption kinetics experiments were conducted and imprinting properties were recorded under different pH. The above experimental results showed that the fluorescence quenching was successfully achieved when the template molecule SA was captured by the molecularly imprinted polymer. When the concentration of SA was 1.25–100 × 10 –2 g/L, the fluorescence quenching degree of MIMPs showed a fine linear relationship with SA. The correlation coefficient was 0.9946, and the detection equation was F 0 / F − 1 = 0.0215 [CSA] + 0.0241. MIMPs had a high recognition ability for SA, and the imprinting factor was 2.44. As a fluorescent sensor for SA, the response time of MIMPs was 20 min. When the buffer solution pH was 7, the imprinting factor was the largest. Under the best conditions, MIMPs revealed good selectivity and specificity for the fluorescence recognition of SA. MIMPS were also applied to the analysis of SA in real human serum samples with satisfactory results. Graphical abstract

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) have drawn promising attention due to their low cost and high theoretical capacity for sodium storage. However, the critical issues of TMSs with huge volume changes and lower ionic/electronic conductivity are the major challenges for their practical application in sodium-ion batteries. Herein, we constructed cobalt-doped ZnS encapsulated in an N-doped carbon shell (denoted as Co-ZnS@NC), which effectively alleviates the volume expansion and improves sodium storage performance. The mechanism analysis and ion diffusion kinetics analysis (GITT, EIS, and CV) prove the acceleration of Na+ diffusion by the built-in electric field and buffer carbon layer in the Co-ZnS@NC, optimizing the cycle life and rate capability. The as-prepared Co-ZnS@NC has a high reversible capacity of 456.8 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1 and superior rate capability (368.8 mA h g−1 at 20.0 A g−1), with Na metal as the counter electrode. Moreover, the assembled full cell shows a high energy density of 214.4 W h kg−1. This work provides insight on heteroatom doping for optimizing the rate capability of TMS anodes.

4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP, a toxic pesticide intermediate) residues in waste water endanger water ecology and human health. Therefore, the development of reliable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is a promising strategy for monitoring and preventing 4-ATP pollution. In this work, a core-shell structured Ag@ZnS hybrid, consisting of Ag nano-core and ZnS nano-shell, was fabricated and employed as a SERS substrate to detect 4-ATP. Owing to the specific core-shell structure, epy as-prepared Ag@ZnS substrate is stable against oxidation and spontaneous agglomeration of Ag NPs, enjoying good stability and uniform hot spots. Moreover, the formation of heterostructure between Ag-core and ZnS-shell offered a remarkable chemical enhancement for the Raman signals. The optimized Ag@ZnS substrate showed high sensitivity for rhodamine 6 G (R6G, 10 −9 M) and methylene blue (10 −8 M) probes, as well as 4-ATP (10 −8 M) target analyte. Likewise, the superior reproducibility (RSD<5.50 %, n = 16) and good stability (79.5 % of initial strength after 28 days) for 4-ATP makes this substrate a good candidate for actual determination of trace 4-ATP. This work proposes a strategy to fabricate a reliable SERS substrate with high sensitivity and superior reproducibility, and the designed Ag@ZnS substrate may be applicable to monitor 4-ATP residues in wastewater.

Ternary I–III–VI nanocrystals (NCs) without toxic elements, such as Cu–In–S, are promising candidates for biolabeling and bioimaging due to their favorable biocompatibility. At present, it remains a tremendous challenge to directly synthesize high-quality Cu–In–S/ZnS core/shell NCs in aqueous solution at atmospheric pressure. Herein, a simple and reliable strategy that combines the hot-injection method and successive ion layer adsorption and reaction has been proposed to realize aqueous synthesis of fluorescent Cu–In–S/ZnS core/shell NCs. The growth of ZnS shell around Cu–In–S NCs not only improved the fluorescence quantum yield by several hundred times and to the value of 18%, but also effectively enhanced their fluorescence stability by protecting Cu+ in Cu–In–S core from being oxidized to Cu2+. The prepared Cu–In–S/ZnS core/shell NCs with bright and stable fluorescence were conjugated with wheat germ agglutinin and further applied to cancer cell imaging. This strategy here should open new avenues for aqueous synthesis of high-quality nanomaterials with the core/shell structure for broad biomedical applications.

Due to the high importance of transferrin in targeting tumor, the investigation on the functionalization process of quantum dots (QDs) using transferrin is very essential. In this paper, the interaction between CdSe and CdSe@ZnS QDs with transferrin was studied by various spectroscopies. It was found that the two types of QDs triggered the fluorescence quenching of transferrin by the static quenching mechanism. At 298 K, the binding constant for CdSe@ZnS QDs (8.03 × 10 6 L·mol −1 ) is higher than CdSe QDs (2.84 × 10 6 L·mol −1 ), implying that CdSe@ZnS QDs could bind stronger to transferrin. In addition, the values of enthalpy change (∆ H ), entropy change (∆ S ) and Gibbs free energy change (∆ G ) were negative, indicating that the binding procedures between both QDs and transferrin were spontaneous and the main binding forces were hydrogen bonding and van der Waals force. The results of CD spectra indicated that both QDs induced the conformational change of transferrin, which further caused the release of iron ions from transferrin. Compared with CdSe QDs, less contents of iron ions in transferrin were detected after interaction with CdSe@ZnS QDs. Additional cytotoxicity tests showed that both QDs were toxic to Hela and 293T cells, but the cytotoxicity of CdSe QDs was stronger than that of CdSe@ZnS QDs. Moreover, the combination of transferrin failed to promote the cytotoxicity of CdSe QDs and CdSe@ZnS QDs, which is ascribed to the release of iron ions during the interaction process between QDs and transferrin.

Defect–rich zinc sulfide (ZnS, ZS) was successfully synthesized by the slow release of S source from glutathione (GSH) to coordinate with Zn 2+ at high temperature. Based on this, a novel ZnS/g–C 3 N 4 (ZSCN) heterojunction with high catalytic activity was fabricated through facile in–situ hydrothermal method . The removal rates of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and Cr 6+ for ZSCN–0.05 with the highest catalytic activity under full–spectrum illumination were 13.0, 53.2, 2.0 and 11.6 times of g–C 3 N 4 (CN), and 3.6, 14.8, 1.2 and 3.9 times of ZS, respectively. While, under visible–light illumination, ZSCN–0.075 exhibited the best photodegradation performance for RhB, and the degradation rate was 5.2 and 19.3 times to CN and ZS, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZSCN heterojunction could be attributed to the synergistic effect between CN and ZS: ZS with defect-rich enhanced the absorption intensity of ZSCN in the ultraviolet, and CN broaden the spectral response range of ZSCN. Moreover photoluminescence spectrum confirmed that the formation of ZSCN heterojunction could effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and accelerate the electron transfer at its interface.

Graphical Photofit : Fabricating a high-performance photocatalyst to efficiently solve serious environmental problems is an urgent affair. A series of MoS 2 /ZnO composites were successfully fabricated through a facile hydrothermal route, leading to a highly efficient MoS 2 /ZnS/ZnO ternary photocatalyst for environmental treatment. Fabricating a high-performance photocatalyst to efficiently solve serious environmental problems is an urgent affair. Herein, a series of MoS 2 /ZnO composites were successfully fabricated through a facile hydrothermal route using Na 2 MoO 4 , (NH 2 ) 2 CS and urchin-like ZnO as precursors. According to the results of XRD and XPS, it was found that ZnS appeared in MoS 2 /ZnO composite; meanwhile, the content was positively correlated with the weight of the precursor (NH 2 ) 2 CS. It should be noted that the morphology and the metallic phase content of MoS 2 grown in situ on the surface of ZnO were affected by the molar ratio of Na 2 MoO 4 and ZnO. Benefiting from the special dual II heterojunctions of MoS 2 /ZnS/ZnO ternary composite, the material exhibited excellent charge separation and transfer performances. In the photocatalytic measurements, the MoS 2 /ZnS/ZnO (Na 2 MoO 4 :ZnO 1:2 MZ2) composite not only exhibits excellent photocatalytic Cr VI reduction activity of 42.3×10 −3 min −1 , but also displays remarkable adsorption performance (nearly 32.1 %) for Cr 2 . In addition, the ternary composite shows dominant photocatalytic Cr VI reduction activities compared to other photocatalysts. This work provides a high-efficient MoS 2 /ZnS/ZnO ternary photocatalyst for environmental treatment.

Rapid, highly sensitive detection of tau protein and other neurodegenerative biomarkers remains a significant hurdle for diagnostic tests for Alzheimer's disease. In this work, we developed a novel tyrosinase (TYR)-induced tau aptamer–tau–tau antibody (anti-tau) sandwich fluorescence immunoassay to detect tau protein that used dopamine (DA)-functionalized CuInS 2 /ZnS quantum dots as the fluorophore. CuInS 2 /ZnS core/shell quantum dots with high luminescence, low toxicity, and excellent biocompatibility were successfully fabricated and decorated with DA through amide conjugation. Meanwhile, TYR was conjugated with anti-tau by a click reaction. When DA-functionalized CuInS 2 /ZnS quantum dots were added to the sandwich system, TYR catalyzed the transformation of DA to dopamine quinone, which acted as an effective electron acceptor and triggered fluorescence quenching. The fluorescence intensity of the immunoassay based on DA-functionalized CuInS 2 /ZnS quantum dots shows good performance in terms of linearity with the logarithm of tau protein concentration, with a linear concentration range from 10 pM to 200 nM. This work is the first to use a TYR-induced fluorescence immunoassay for the rapid detection of tau protein, paving a new way for the detection of disease biomarkers.
