Isolation and characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from pueraria root residue

Zhanhong Wang,Zhengjun Yao,Jintang Zhou,Meng He,Qiong Jiang,Shuiping Li,Yuanye Ma,Manqing Liu,Sen Luo

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were successfully fabricated from waste pueraria root residue after starch extraction via the phosphoric acid hydrolysis method by a series of chemical treatment processes including ultrasonic washing, pectin elimination, bleaching, alkali boiling, and phosphoric acid hydrolysis. The high aspect ratio of CNCs with a crystallinity index of 60 ± 4.10% was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). The TEM results showed that CNCs were rod-like particles with 100–330 nm in length and 2 to 6 nm in width. The average aspect ratio of the CNCs was 40 ± 10. The XRD results also indicated that the crystalline structure of CNC was cellulose I , compared to that of MCC with the crystallinity index declining from 60 ± 4.10% to 48 ± 0.37%. The FTIR spectra showed the resulting samples were the cellulose species. Interestingly, stable colloidal suspensions were determined by the zeta potential measurement . The thermal properties of CNCs were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis , revealing that CNCs exhibited lower thermal stability compared to those of MCC and the raw pueraria root residue. This study provides a cost effective method and mild process conditions for preparing CNCs from waste pueraria root residue.

Preparation and photocatalytic performance of TiO2/cellulose aerogel composite materials

Chunxiao Zhang,Baotong Chen,Jianwen Bao,Yonghan Wang,Xiangpeng Wang

Nano-TiO 2 was synthesized by a sol-gel method using tetrabutyl titanate, anhydrous ethanol, and glacial acetic acid as precursors. Subsequently, a TiO 2 /cellulose hydrogel was prepared by in situ polymerization using cellulose and nano-TiO 2 as the matrix materials, ammonium persulfate (APS) as the initiator, and acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) as grafting monomers. The obtained hydrogel was converted into a porous aerogel composite by freeze-drying. The structure and surface properties of the composite were systematically characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Through orthogonal array design and single-factor experiments, three critical parameters affecting the photocatalytic performance were optimized: TiO 2 loading (0.5 g), monomer molar ratio (AM: AA = 1:3.5), and crosslinker dosage (N, N’-methylenebisacrylamide, MBA = 0.04 g). Photocatalytic degradation was evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy using methylene blue as a model pollutant. The results showed that the degradation efficiency decreased with increasing methylene blue concentration, whereas the time required to reach equilibrium increased. In comparative experiments, the CQDs/TiO 2 /GO/cellulose aerogel exhibited higher degradation efficiency than the binary TiO 2 /cellulose aerogel, achieving 95.8% methylene blue degradation within 60 min. The composites also showed selective photocatalytic activity, with markedly higher degradation rates for methylene blue than for eriochrome black T and norfloxacin.

Janus cellulose nanofiber foam-based flexible triboelectric nanogenerator for wearables

Jingqiu Wang,Xiaojun Li,Peiyao He,Dong Lv,Min Wang,Linjun Zou,Hong Wang,Jian Li,Likun Gao

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are widely applied in wearable electronics due to their self-powered sensing capability for real-time monitoring of human physiological and motion states. However, reconciling superior mechanical properties with high-efficiency triboelectric output remains a key challenge. Herein, a Janus-structured cellulose nanofiber (CNF) positive triboelectric foam is fabricated via a dual-layer integration strategy. Its Janus asymmetric structure simultaneously integrates exceptional electrical output performance and remarkable mechanical properties. Owing to huge surface potential difference caused by Janus asymmetric structure, yields a strong built-in electric field within the foam, boosting charge transfer, achieving enhanced TENG output performance with open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 108 V and short-circuit current ( I SC ) of 1.35 μA. Compared with original CNF foam-based TENG, the Janus CNF foam-based TENG exhibits 309% and 650% enhancement in V OC and I SC , respectively. Benefiting from the asymmetric pore distribution, the material effectively provides abundant stress transfer pathways, resulting in an improved tensile strength of 1.38 MPa, which shows a 1050% enhancement compared with that of the pure CNF foam. Furthermore, TENG integrated by such flexible Janus foam material provides a promising reference for the construction of high-performance, stable energy harvesting and conversion devices.

Esterification and application of maleic anhydride of regenerated microcrystalline cellulose

Yuan Tao,Wu Jing-Yi,Li Ya,Meng Jia-Ning,Qiu Dan

The processing and modification of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) are highly challenging due to its highly crystalline nature restricting its broader application. This study used NaOH/urea aqueous solution for the graded regeneration of MCC, which effectively disrupted its dense crystalline structure and exposed the additional free hydroxyl groups. A modified secondary regenerated cellulose derivative (MA-SRC) with a 0.182 degree of substitution (DS) was produced using esterification with maleic anhydride. The sequential regeneration and modification with maleic anhydride increased the specific surface area of MCC from 6.87 to 8.66 m 2 /g. Comprehensive characterisation revealed that MA-SRC had unchanged crystalline phases, with reduced crystallinity and significantly improved hydrophobic properties. However, the difficulty in testing the mechanical properties of MCC alone (requires matrix support for moulding) required the incorporation of polylactic acid (PLA) to investigate the characteristics of the composite material further. Compared to PLA/MCC and PLA/SRC, the tensile strength of PLA/MA-SRC increased by 10.89% and 9.12%, and its elongation at break improved by 35.24% and 33.33%, respectively. Additionally, esterification significantly improved the contact angle. Consequently, these results confirmed that the synergistic graded regeneration–esterification strategy effectively enhanced the interfacial compatibility between MCC and PLA, which provided a novel approach for developing high-performance MCC-based composites. Versatile Fluorescent Cellulose-Based Materials via Hydroxyl–Yne Click Chemistry

Qi Tian,Han Zhang,Bingnan Wang,Anjun Qin,Ben Zhong Tang

Cellulose-based fluorescent materials are attractive for sustainable applications owing to their biocompatibility and biodegradability; however, their practical utility is often limited by aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and insufficient functional diversity. Here, we report a versatile strategy to construct aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active cellulose materials via an organobase-catalyzed hydroxyl–yne click reaction, enabling the efficient incorporation of tetraphenylethene (TPE) units into the cellulose backbone. The resulting EC-TPEs exhibit high optical transparency (>95%), full UV-shielding capability, and intense fluorescence, allowing simultaneous UV protection and real-time optical indication. Notably, the fluorescence properties can be precisely tuned by controlling the grafting ratio, enabling multicolor emission and the fabrication of high-resolution fluorescent quick response (QR) codes. Furthermore, secondary grafting of AIE-active MTPAP unit affords an acid-responsive system of EC–TPE–MTPAP with dynamic fluorescence color switching, facilitating advanced multicolor encryption and high-density information storage. Importantly, the dynamic enol ether linkages formed via the hydroxyl-yne click reaction enable an efficient amine-exchange defunctionalization process, restoring cellulose hydroxyl groups without loss of reactivity. This work establishes a reversible and modular platform for engineering multifunctional fluorescent cellulose materials, offering new opportunities for sustainable optical materials and information technologies.

Cellulose-Based Oleogels via One-Step Cross-Linking for Lubrication

Yuhao Fang,Gaobo Lou,Hongjiang Yu,Lina Liu,Yifan Chen

In this study, novel and stable cellulose-based oleogels with tunable rheological properties were successfully developed for lubrication applications via cross-linking reactions of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and isocyanate. This cross-linking strategy not only overcomes the incompatibility issue arising from the polarity difference between MCC and ESO but also enables precise control over the oleogels’ rheological behavior by tailoring the cross-linking density. The resulting oleogels exhibit excellent thermal stability, with an initial decomposition temperature (T5%) of approximately 300 °C. Furthermore, oxidation resistance is significantly enhanced with increasing cross-linking density, resulting in a substantial increase in the oxidation induction time (OIT) from 5 to 79 min at 210 °C. Rheological characterization reveals that the oleogels exhibit typical shear-thinning and thixotropic behavior. The plateau modulus (

C6-Aldehyde Functionalized Cellulose Preparation by 2-Iodoxybenzoic Acid Oxidation

Fei Jiang,Qing Huang,Xianqing Lv,Zhiming Dong,Zhuotong Wu,Lu Chen,Jianguo Li,Lihui Chen,Li Shuai,Chengke Zhao

Selective oxidation of polyol-containing cellulose is significant for the development of cellulose-derived functional materials. While conventional oxidation methods readily introduce aldehyde groups at the C2/C3 positions (accompanied by ring-opening of anhydroglucose units) or carboxyl groups at the C6 positions in cellulose, selective oxidation to generate aldehyde functionalities specifically at the C6 position remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate that 2-Iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) acts as an efficient and selective oxidant for converting the primary alcohol at the C6 position of anhydroglucose units to aldehyde groups under mild conditions. Monosaccharide model studies confirmed C6-specific oxidation. This method was successfully applied for the surface modification of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC, predominantly Iβ allomorph) and bacterial cellulose (BC, mainly Iα allomorph), achieving aldehyde contents of 0.96 and 0.93 mmol g-1, respectively, with 0.6 and 0.5 equiv of IBX per anhydroglucose unit. Crystallinity analysis showed that oxidation with IBX leads to a significant decrease of crystallinity but has a negligible effect on the cellulose allomorph. This study presents a novel approach for the preparation of C6-aldehyde cellulose, enabling precise, selective modification and advancing functional material development.

Quaternized xylan/cellulose nanocrystal reinforced magnetic hydrogels with high strength

Ren Junli,Dai Qingqing,Zhong Haoquan,Liu Xinxin,Meng Ling,Wang Xiaohui,Xin Fengxue

Recently, ever-increasing focus has been on the exploration of high-strength and intelligent hydrogels. In this paper, we demonstrate a feasible approach to prepare magnetic hydrogels with high compression strength, elasticity and elongation by a two-step process. Quaternized xylan (QXH) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) could form the ionic crosslinking within the network to enhance the mechanical strength of hydrogels. Subsequently, Fe 3 O 4 nanoctahedra was fabricated in situ within the reinforced hydrogel matrix. Properties of prepared hydrogels including the compressive strength, swelling ratio, magnetic performance, thermal stability, surface morphology and adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions from the aqueous solution were investigated. Results showed that QXH and CNC had the significant impact on improving the strength property of hydrogels. The compressive stress of prepared hydrogel was sharply increased to the limit of the measurement (2.5 MPa), when the compressive strain reached 85%. This hydrogel also maintained 90% original strength after compression for 30 times. The maximum tensile elongation of this hydrogel was 2875%, corresponding to the breaking tensile strength of 73.86 kPa. Prepared hydrogels also showed the good absorption capacity for heavy metal ions.

Preparation and Property of Waterborne Polyurethane/Cellulose Nanofiber Nanocomposite Films

Yu Zhe Lin,Jia Min Zeng,Jing Hong Ma,Jing Hua Gong

Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is a new type of polyurethane system, which using water instead of organic solvent as dispersing medium. Because of its non-toxicity and environmental safety, WPU is considered as the development direction of coatings and adhesives. However, the mechanical properties of WPU are worse than that of solvent-based polyurethane, therefore, the modification of WPU has received increasingly attention. Meanwhile numerous evidences demonstrate the excellent properties of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) such as high aspect ratio, low weight and outstanding mechanical strength. Therefore, there is a high expectation for CNFs to be introduced into WPU as reinforcing filler. In this work, a series of CNFs/WPU nanocomposite films were prepared by solution blending. The structure, morphology, thermal behavior and mechanical properties were investigated. SEM results showed that CNFs were evenly dispersed in the WPU matrix. Tensile tests indicated that the modulus and tensile strength of CNFs/WPU nanocomposite films were improved compared with the neat film. While the break elongation of the nanocomposite films decreased with the increase of CNFs content. The synergistic interaction between CNFs and WPU matrix plays an important role in the enhancement of mechanical properties.

Tunable-pore cellulose microsphere adsorbents for column adsorption of dyes

Guancheng Liu,Zhe Zhang,Xin Long,Kai Zhang,Yunfeng Li,Bai Yang

The pore structure of cellulose microspheres is vital for their adsorption performance, however it is still challenge to control pore size and their distribution by a simple and cost-effective method. Here, through adjusting volume ratios of ethylene glycol diacetate to n-octanol in the cellulose solution, we prepare cellulose microspheres with adjustable pore size ranging from the micron- to nanometer scale in a straightforward and scalable method. We show that the average diameter of pores in cellulose microspheres is controlled from 4.58 μm to 108.43 nm with the median of pore diameter being from 1.63 μm to 7.69 nm. Cellulose microspheres exhibited good performance in both static and dynamic adsorption of methylene blue dye with a maximum capacity of 20.6 mg/g. A monolayer adsorption mechanism is revealed through fitting the Langmuir isotherm model. Interestingly, cellulose microspheres exhibit compressive strength comparable to that of adsorption resins, with maximum compressive stress ranging from 5.25 to 52.1 MPa, enabling them to pack in adsorption columns. Notably, a removal efficiency of 94.1 % was achieved by using column adsorption. Cellulose microspheres show adjustable pore size, good mechanical properties, and good adsorption performance, which will accelerate their practical applications in the environmental remediation.

Preparation of bulk sodium carboxymethyl cellulose aerogels with tunable morphology

Runjun Lin,Ang Li,Lingbin Lu,Yang Cao

Homogeneous and bulk carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel and aerogel were prepared by a novel process, using Fe 3+ and d -(+)-gluconic acid-lactone as cross-linker and releasing agent, respectively. The results showed that the mass fraction of Fe 3+ has a great effect on CMC aerogels’ structure, crystallization and morphology. By adjusting the mass fraction of Fe 3+ , granular, three-dimensional network and rod-like morphology were obtained, responding to varying density and porosity. The aerogel had low density (low to 0.0568   g/cm 3 ) and high porosity (up to 90.45%). Meantime. Combination patterns between carboxylate ion and iron ion were checked by FTIR. Furthermore, with the addition of Fe 3+ , lattice mismatch of CMC emerged and led to decreasing crystalline degree and thermal stability. This work would play an important role in the handy and extensive application of CMC aerogels

Preparation and Properties of Microcrystalline Cellulose/Fish Gelatin Composite Film

Ling Pan,Peng Li,Yubo Tao

As a natural macromolecule-based biomaterial, fish gelatin is used in medical materials for its low pathogen infection risk. However, because of poor mechanical properties, its application has been limited. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose-reinforced fish gelatin (FG/MCC) composite films were prepared with a biological cross-linking agent (genipin) under ultrasonic treatment. SEM micrographs showed that the smooth microstructure of FG film became increasingly disordered with the addition of MCC. The infrared spectrum analysis (FTIR) demonstrated the existence of hydrogen bond interaction between MCC and FG. Compared with the pure FG film, the tensile strength (TS) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of composite films with MCC were improved, and the elongation at break (EAB) and swelling ratios (SR) were decreased. Ultrasonic treatment could further improve TS, MOE, and SR. When the composite film was prepared with 15% MCC and treated with ultrasound, the TS and MOE increased by 115% and 227%, respectively, while the EAB decreased by 35% and the SR decreased by 4% in comparison with pure FG films. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the FG/MCC composite films were stable below 100 °C. The above results indicate that the FG/MCC films have optimistic application prospects in the biomedical field.
