Efficient photocatalytic H2-evolution coupled with valuable furfural-production on exquisite 2D/2D LaVO4/g-C3N4 heterostructure

Xue Li,Jundie Hu,Tingyu Yang,Xiaogang Yang,Jiafu Qu,Chang Ming Li

Effectively utilize photogenerated holes (h + ) of catalysts while blocking rapid recombination of photoinduced carriers are the two critical challenges for solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion. Here, an exquisite 2D/2D LaVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 (LaVO 4 /CN) heterostructure is delicately designed and fabricated for efficient photocatalytic H 2 -evolution while producing high value-added furfural simultaneously. The abundant biomass furfuryl alcohol (FFA) is employed to substitute the traditional h + sacrificial agents such as triethanolamine (TEOA) for the oxidation half reaction, which is very meaningful to balance the H 2 -evolution half reaction. The LaVO 4 /CN heterojunction enables 3-time increased H 2 -evolution and a high furfural-production rate (0.95 mmol g −1 h −1 ) than that of pristine graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 , labeled as CN), and with a 22.16% H 2 -evolution apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) irradiated at 400 nm. This work provides an exquisite catalyst and a new strategy for efficient photocatalytic H 2 -evolution coupled with production of high valuable chemicals.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol using easy-to-separate core–shell magnetic zirconium hydroxide

Pan Hou,Mingwei Ma,Peng Zhang,Jingjie Cao,Hui Liu,Xingliang Xu,Huijuan Yue,Ge Tian,Shouhua Feng

A hollow core–shell magnetic zirconium hydroxide catalyst was synthesized and employed for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) ofnumerous biomass-derived platform molecules (furfural and other carbonyl compounds). 93.9% conversion of furfural and 97.3% selectivity of furfuryl alcohol was achieved under mild reaction conditions (160 °C, 4 h, 0.1 g catalyst) with 2-propanol as the H-donor. After 7 times of reaction cycles, the catalyst retained excellent conversion (91.1%) and selectivity (97.8%) and no structural damage was found. Furthermore, a scale-up experiment was carried out, and the results proved that the catalyst has a prospect for industrial applications in the CTH reaction.

Tuning the synthesis of polymetallic-doped ZIF derived materials for efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol

Yafei Fan,Shangjing Li,Ying Wang,Changfu Zhuang,Xiaoteng Liu,Guangshan Zhu,Xiaoqin Zou

Cu, Co and Zn modified N-doped porous carbons (CuCo/Zn@NPC) are prepared using a polymetallic homogeneous doping and self-templating method as high performance non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FAL). The CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst after treatment at 600 °C shows a superior catalytic activity with nearly 100% conversion of FF and an almost 100% selectivity of FAL using H2 at 140 °C. Meanwhile in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) using 2-propanol as a H-donor, the conversion of FF reaches 95.8% and the selectivity of FAL is 99.1%. The results show that the Zn dopant leads to 37.3 times higher yield on the CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst than that on CuCo@NPC-600, and 2.3 times higher than that on Co/Zn@NPC-600 with Cu dopants. The efficient activity of the CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst is mainly due to the highly dispersed metal nanoparticles, the advanced porous structure resulting from Zn escape from the precursor template, and the synergistic effect between Cu and Co. Furthermore, the CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst exhibits good recyclability in FF hydrogenation in four cycle tests. The advanced synthesis method using a homogeneous doping and self-templating strategy sheds light on preparing effective catalysts for hydrogenation of biomass-based compounds.

Bimetallic PtFe-Catalyzed Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol: Solvent Effect of Isopropanol and Hydrogen Activation

Xing Gao,Suyang Tian,Yunyun Jin,Xiaoyue Wan,Chunmei Zhou,Rizhi Chen,Yihu Dai,Yanhui Yang

Highly selective liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural was efficiently catalyzed by PtFe alloy nanoparticles supported on CeO2. An initial reaction rate at ∼1500 h–1, a near 100% selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol (FA), and a satisfactory recycling stability were achieved on Pt3Fe/CeO2 catalyst. Based on the well-established knowledge of the modification effects of Fe additives on the geometric and electronic properties of Pt sites, this work further demonstrated that the bimetallic PtFe sites could promote H2-activated dissociation for accelerating the hydrogenation reaction in comparison with the monometallic Pt/CeO2 catalyst. The results of isotopic and kinetic experiments to study the solvent effects elucidated that the reaction pathway of catalytic transfer hydrogenation with isopropanol as the hydrogen donor could be ruled out. The results also suggested that isopropanol-involved hydrogen exchange processes with hydrogen and FA could easily occur during the reactions. Furthermore, the furfural hydrogenation could be significantly affected by the solvent intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions.

Wenyang Fan,Houchun Yan,Xin Huang,Zhaohui Liao,Qingsong Li,Zhanhua Ma

The extraction process as a kind of energy-saving and environmental protection technology can be used to separate phenols from low-temperature coal tar. The liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) data regarding ternary systems n-heptane + phenols + furfural were determined experimentally at 303.2, 323.2, and 343.2 K under the atmospheric pressure condition, where phenols refer to phenol, p-cresol, and 2,6-xylenol. The solvent extraction capacity was assessed by the solute distribution coefficient and selectivity. Othmer–Tobias and Bachman equations were utilized to validate the consistency of the measured data, which the linear correlation (R2) ≥ 0.99. Experimental LLE data were correlated utilizing the NRTL and UNIQUAC thermodynamic models with all of the RMSD and AARD values below 0.01, meaning that each ternary system is satisfactorily in agreement at temperatures studied and the NRTL model gives better agreement than the UNIQUAC model for ternary systems.

Valorization of corn cob toward multipurpose fractionation with a recyclable acid hydrotrope: furfural, phenolic compounds, and pulp

Liu Shiqi,Ji Hairui

In this study, a strategy of corncob valorization was proposed. Corncob was first pretreated with a recyclable acid hydrotrope ( p -TsOH, aqueous solution) to selectively remove lignin and hemicelluloses. After pretreatment, the collected liquid phase was diluted with deionized water to precipitate lignin. The hemicelluloses degradation products, mainly pentose, in the resulting acid liquor were converted into furfural with a yield of 53.65% without adding any catalyst. The collected lignin was depolymerized to phenolic monomers with a yield of 68.00% via a hydrodeoxygenation process. The pretreated cellulose-rich solid was subjected to 10 s ultrasonic treatment to form pulp and subsequently used for papermaking by blending it with commercial softwood pulp. With a corncob pulp addition of 20%, the tensile index and ring crush index of hand sheets increased by 10.62% and 5.05%, respectively, compared with those containing 100% softwood pulp. Therefore, this study provided a strategy for corncob valorization toward multipurpose fractionation: furfural, phenolic monomers, and pulp, reaching a comprehensive utilization of corncob. Centrifugal Extraction-Assisted Fiber-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Online Detection of Trace Furfural in Oil Power Equipment

Ruimin Song,Weigen Chen,Ziyi Wang,Zhixian Zhang,Yingzhou Huang,Jianxin Wang

Oil-paper insulated equipment is integral in power conversion and supports low-loss electricity transport. As a characteristic byproduct of the oil-paper insulation system, the realization of efficient detection of furfural in oil is crucial to the safe operation of the power grid. We proposed a novel approach using dual-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for sensing trace liquid components. This method employs a centrifugal extractor to separate and enrich the targeted components, achieving selective enhancement. The optimal phase ratio was determined to be 30:1. A liquid-core fiber was used to optimize the laser transmission efficiency and Raman signal collection efficiency, resulting in a nonselective signal enhancement of 44.86. It also investigated the impact of intermolecular interactions on the shift of Raman spectra, identifying the reasons for the differences in Raman signals between pure furfural, furfural in oil, and furfural in water. A batch of samples with furfural dissolved in insulation oil was measured using this system and achieved a limit of detection of 0.091 mg/L. The stability of the dual-enhanced Raman platform was experimentally verified with a spectral intensity fluctuation of 0.68%. This method is fast, stable, adaptable, and suitable for the detection of a wide range of liquid ingredients.

Selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol through hydrogenation spillover over amorphized HA zeolite encapsulated platinum clusters

Pai Peng,Yaning Yue,Mengxi Han,Jun Shi,Jing Yang,Junwen Chen,Qiang Chen

Design of heterogeneous catalyst to achieve efficient conversion of biomass to high added-value chemicals is still very attractive. Herein, taking industrially important selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol as an example, the designed amorphized HA zeolite encapsulation of platinum clusters (denoted as Pt@HA) exhibited excellent catalytic selectivity at totally conversion of the reactant furfural, along with good reusability and poison resistance ability. The selected amorphized HA zeolite with very small pore size constrained the reactant furfural to be reacted through hydrogen spillover process at zeolite surface, instead of to be adsorbed and activated onto Pt surface. Resulting from the stronger interaction between nucleophilic oxygen atom of aldehyde group and acid site at HA zeolite surface than that of furan ring group, furfural preferred to adsorb onto Pt@HA surface with the end of aldehyde group rather than the end of furan ring group, thus facilitating the spilled H atom to react with aldehyde group to give desired furfuryl alcohol product exclusively.

Ionic buffering biphase systems as catalysts and solvents for efficient dehydration of xylose and hemicellulose to furfural

Guangzhi Xu,Zhuoheng Tu,Xingbang Hu,Mian Li,Xiaomin Zhang,Youting Wu

The utilization of biomass instead of fossil resources for the synthesis of various chemicals is regarded as one of the most important strategies to realize sustainable and environmentally-friendly chemical industry. The design and development of suitable catalysts for biomass conversion are of particular significance. Herein, ionic buffering biphase systems (IBBSs) consisting of ionic buffering catalysts (IBCs) and an organic phase as extractant are proposed and developed for the dehydration of xylose and hemicellulose to furfural (FF). The systems can efficiently catalyze the conversion of xylose and hemicellulose to FF and significantly reduce the use of NaCl. High FF yields of 76.4% or 85.1% were realized with almost complete conversion of hemicellulose or xylose. The IBBSs have advantages of simple preparation, thermal stability, and low cost, not to mention the facts that they enable both the excellent extraction of FF product from aqueous phase to oil phase and the easy recycling of ionic buffering catalyst. This work offers a new strategy of designing and developing catalytic reaction-separation coupling systems for the efficient conversion of xylose and hemicellulose to FF.

Protic Brønsted acidic ionic liquids with variable acidity for efficient conversion of xylose and hemicellulose to furfural

Guangzhi Xu,Zhuoheng Tu,Xingbang Hu,Mian Li,Xiaomin Zhang,Youting Wu

Furfural (FF) is an important platform molecule originated from biomass, but it’s synthesis through the traditional acid-catalyzed dehydration reaction of xylose and hemicellulose remains problematic due to the poor activity and equipment corrosion. Therefore, a series of [HSO 4 ]-based protic Brønsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs) are employed as green catalysts to achieve efficient and sustainable preparation of FF from xylose or hemicellulose in this work. Furfural yields of 75.4% or 80.4% were achieved under optimal operating conditions with [Hpy][HSO 4 ] as catalyst, hemicellulose or xylose as substrates, higher than those catalysed with most ionic liquids reported so far. The chemical structures of BAILs were confirmed by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, and the Hammett acidity ( H 0 ) were determined using UV–vis spectroscopy with 4-nitroaniline as probe. The acidity of BAILs were tuned through methyl substitution on the pyridinium ring, and its effect on the catalysis performance was investigated. In addition, the reaction constants and the corresponding activation energies of BAILs for dehydration of xylose to FF were calculated by kinetic equations. Overall, the highly efficient catalysis performance, good recyclability and low cost enables [Hpy][HSO 4 ] to be potentially applied for large-scale preparation of FF.

Efficient Conversion of Xylose into Furfural Using Sulfonic Acid-Functionalized Metal–Organic Frameworks in a Biphasic System

Yong Liu,Caijun Ma,Chunxi Huang,Yan Fu,Jie Chang

A novel approach was developed to efficiently produce furfural from xylose via sulfonic acid-functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101(Cr)-SO3H in a biphasic cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME)/H2O-NaCl solvent system. This paper compared the differences in structure and properties of these catalysts synthesized at different molar ratios of metal salt and organic ligand. In addition, xylose conversion and furfural yield under different reaction conditions were discussed in detail. 70.8% furfural yield with 97.8% xylose conversion was achieved at the following conditions: 0.4 g of xylose, 0.27 g of catalyst, 26 wt % NaCl referred to H2O, 12 g of mixed solution of CPME/H2O (mass ratio 2:1), 443 K for 180 min. This new approach gained higher furfural yield in a shorter time and the catalyst was recycled five times after a simple filtration, washing, and drying with receptive loss of the product.

Mechanistic insights on catalytic conversion fructose to furfural on beta zeolite via selective carbon-carbon bond cleavage

Yueqing Wang,Xiaohai Yang,Hongyan Zheng,Xianqing Li,Yulei Zhu,Yongwang Li

The mechanism for the formation of furfural by dehydration of d -fructose via selective carbon-carbon (C C) bond cleavage was investigated over beta zeolite (Hβ). Several different pore size zeolites were employed to determine the shape selectivity of fructose isomers. Zeolitic pore sizes that smaller than the kinetic diameter of cyclic fructose also produced yield furfural (∼22.5%), while the high yield (66.0%) of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be achieved over large pore zeolite (USY zeolite), which could accommodate the cyclic fructose. These results indicated that the furfural formation likely began with acyclic fructose. In situ 13 C NMR and GC MS studies, using labeled 13 C-1-fructose as substrate, suggested that the conversion of fructose to furfural involved with splitting of the C5-C6 bond. Furthermore, the C1 compound from the cleavage of C C bond was identified as formaldehyde, inferring that the selective scission of C C bond was ascribe to the retro-aldol reaction. Interestingly, in situ NMR studies implied that the acyclic fructose mainly derived from pyranose forms. In addition, compared with glucose, fructose directly converted to furfural at the higher yield and reaction rate.
