Preparation and properties of sulfomethylated lignin-based highly flexible polyurethane foam

Han Han,Guangying Huang,Xilai Yan,Shibo Han,Jie Xie,Hongshen He,Ajoy Kanti Mondal,Weijie Lin,Fang Huang

Polyurethane (PU) can be synthesized by replacing petrochemical polyols partially with lignin, thus improving the environmental benefit and the comprehensive performance of the foam. Herein, sulfomethylated Kraft lignin (SKL) is obtained by sulfonation of Kraft lignin (KL), and then it is used as filler to synthesize the sulfomethylated lignin-based flexible polyurethane foam (SLFPUF). The effects of SKL with different sulfonations on SLFPUF are explored. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis shows that when the sulfonation is 0.286 mmol/g, the residual mass is 12.63 % that is higher (3.35 %) compared to the control group lignin-based flexible polyurethane foam (LFPUF), indicating better thermal stability. The support factor (SF) of SLFPUF-0.286 is 4.99, higher than that of LFPUF (1.89), showing good softness. The air flow of SLFPUF-0.286 is 756.9 Pa, lower than that of LFPUF (996.8 Pa), demonstrating good comfort. Moreover, the resiliency of SLFPUF-0.286 is 9.67 %, exhibiting a shape memory property, which has potential applications in the production of functional products with low resilience.

Sulfur Vacancy-Driven Water Activation for Proton-Enhanced Photocatalytic Lignin Hydrogenolysis

Dingliang Dai,Jianhao Qiu,Jie Xu,Guanglu Xia,Yixin Li,Biyao Fang,Jianfeng Yao

Photocatalytic lignin valorization has garnered significant interest because of its mild reaction conditions and high selectivity. However, the unclear relationships among photocatalysts, reaction solvents, and catalytic activities have hindered further exploration. Herein, we report the innovative synthesis of sulfur vacancy-rich MoS2@ZnIn2S4 heterostructures through one-pot sulfidation of Mo-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient photocatalytic lignin depolymerization. The Mo-MOF-derived MoS2 provides a large surface area and high porosity, enhancing mass transfer, whereas the sulfur vacancies on ZnIn2S4 promote effective charge carrier separation. Notably, the presence of water in the reaction solvent enables the sulfur vacancies to efficiently adsorb and activate water molecules, facilitating proton generation from water dissociation for selective lignin Cβ–O bond hydrogenolysis. The bond cleavage efficiency exhibits a volcano-type trend with increasing water content, achieving optimal performance with 100% conversion of the lignin model compound 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, yielding 78% phenol and 89% acetophenone. This performance significantly surpasses those of MoS2, ZnIn2S4, and the sulfur vacancy-poor MoS2@ZnIn2S4. This work provides critical insights into the solvent-dependent reactivity of catalysts in lignin depolymerization and underscores the potential of defect engineering in photocatalytic biomass valorization.

Sustainable design and synthesis of high-performance lignin-based sunscreen ingredients

Ying Wu,Meng Guo,Jie Gao,Jian-Hui Li,Bo-Kun Chen

The active ingredients most commonly employed in sunscreens are compounds containing one or two aromatic rings. Lignin is the most abundant renewable aromatic polymer that has the potential to yield low molecular weight aromatic chemicals when strategically depolymerized. Here, the UV absorbance of a series of monomeric and dimeric lignin model compounds (LMCs) were studied. Specifically, vanillin and ferulic acid demonstrated good absorption in the UVB (280–320 nm) range, while the 5–5 dimer showed efficient absorption in the UVA (320–400 nm) range. Based on this, vanillin, ferulic acid and 5–5 dimer were mixed in pairs and dispersed in the oily isoeugenol to prepare LMC hybrid dispersions. Subsequently, demethylated lignin (DL) was synthesized and used to encapsulate the LMC hybrid dispersions via ultrasonic cavitation to prepare DL-based nano-capsules (DLNCs). The DLNCs were used as the only active ingredient in sunscreens, whose sun protection factor (SPF) value could be up to 55 with a dosage of 10 wt%. Due to anti-photolysis property of DL, the SPF value of DLNCs-based sunscreens increased initially and maintained >8 h under UV irradiation. Additionally, the prepared DLNCs exhibited excellent anti-permeability, antioxidant capacity and biocompatibility, making them a potential substitute for conventional petroleum-based sunscreen agents.

Reactive amino acid-derived deep eutectic solvents for tailored lignin modification

Xiaoyu Li,Simiao Huang,Xinyu Wu,Junqian Deng,Hailan Lian,Henrikki Liimatainen

The heterogeneous structure and characteristic variability of industrial lignin present key challenges that hinder its use in numerous advanced scenarios. Herein, we explore amino acid-derived deep eutectic solvents (AADESs) featuring diverse side chain structures (glycine, alanine, valine, lysine (Lys), and proline) and serving as reactive media for modifying alkali lignin. For the first time, quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to demonstrate the formation mechanism of AADESs. Among all the considered systems, the Lys-based system proved to be the most stable system owing to its strong nucleophilicity. Unlike choline chloride-based DES, the strong nucleophilicity of Lys could induce nanocrystallization and targeted modification of α -OH to attach phenolic hydroxyl in lignin. Breaking the β –O–4 and β – β linkages within lignin increased the phenolic hydroxyl content of the lignin by up to ~50 %. Additionally, the -NH 2 of amino acids can further increase the reactive sites of lignin, improve thermal stability, and facilitate further chemical modification. The reactivity of AADESs was notably influenced by the nucleophilicity of the side chains of amino acids, as also supported by the simulations. Overall, this research provides in-depth insights into lignin modification within sustainable and reactive solvents, advancing lignin valorization for high-end applications.

Lignin micro-nanospheres loaded with silver nanoparticles for excellent antibacterial activity

Yan Feng,Fan Yang,Wenjin Yuan,Cheng Hu,Fuxiang Chu,Yiqiang Wu,Fuquan Xiong

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely studied for their tunable structural properties and broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. However, AgNPs are easy to accumulate and unstable. Herein, lignin micro-nanospheres (LMNs) loaded with silver nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction method. The AgNPs/LMNs composite manifested good stability and dispersibility to AgNPs. The total release content of Ag/Ag + was only 0.13 % within 12 h and only 2.25 % within 24 h due to the self-antibacterial properties and high surface activity of LMNs. The AgNPs/LMNs showed excellent inhibition and killing effects on both Gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) within 24 h, with the minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of 5 and 2.5 μg/mL, respectively. After collaborative photothermal-assisted treatment, the MBC was reduced to 2.5 and 1.25 μg/mL, respectively. Compared to the same type of AgNPs composite, the concentration of antibacterial components required using the method was reduced by >90 %. The AgNPs in the AgNPs/LMNs caused direct damage to the bacterial cell membrane by generating reactive oxygen species and releasing silver ions, thus achieving an antibacterial effect. This provides an effective strategy for the development of new antibacterial materials.

Copper-hybridized lignin-derived carbon nanotube as a supercapacitor electrode material

Wenjie Zong,Wangjie Xu,Qi Chen,Qiqi Zhou,Zhengyu Zhou,Yulin Zhan,Qingguo Feng,Chunfeng Hu,Jin Huang,Ruihuan Gu,Man Jiang

Advances in supercapacitor energy storage rely on innovations in electrode materials. Although hybrid carbon materials provide large surface areas and abundant active sites, they often suffer from limited conductivity and cycling stability. Metal oxide composites introduce Faradaic pseudocapacitance but face challenges in achieving uniform dispersion and scalable green synthesis. Here, we report a copper-hybridized lignin-derived carbon nanotube (Cu@LCNT) nanocomposite synthesized from renewable sodium lignosulfonate and copper chloride. The Cu@LCNT exhibits uniformly distributed cuprous oxide and copper nanoparticles that enhance conductivity and contribute pseudocapacitance. It delivers a high specific capacitance of 847.9 F/g at 0.5 A/g. The capacitance retention reaches 107.3% after 10,000 cycles. The slight increase above 100% retention arises from an activation process that improves electrode-electrolyte contact and exposes additional active sites during cycling. This study demonstrates a sustainable and efficient approach to designing metal-carbon nanocomposites from biomass resources for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Castor oil graphted lignin-based polyurethane film with excellent barrier properties

Qingyi Xie,Junyi Zhou,Haiquan Sun,Jiamei Fu,Minghui Cui,Xiaolin Wang,Fenglong Li,Jin Zhu,Jing Chen

Bio-based polyurethane materials with good barrier properties are gaining increasing attention for their potential in alleviating energy shortages. In this work, natural lignin first underwent a two-step esterification modification using succinic acid (SA) and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (6-MCH) modified castor oil. The resulting modified lignin exhibited both flexibility and high reactivity. It was further reacted with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) to synthesize a high-bio-based-content polyurethane material (>70 %) with excellent UV resistance and barrier properties. The incorporation of modified castor oil significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the lignin-based polyurethane and improved its water vapor barrier performance due to its intrinsic hydrophobicity. When the molar ratio of hydroxyl groups in the modified castor oil to carboxyl groups in the modified lignin was 5:1, the resulting polyurethane (5:1-PU) DEMONSTRATED a tensile strength of 10.0 ± 0.1 MPa, toughness of 468.3 ± 3.3 MJ·m −3 , a water contact angle of 98.3°, and a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 2.10 ± 0.39 g/m 2 ·24h. This approach, which grafts lignin with castor oil, enables the high-value utilization of lignin and offers a sustainable pathway for developing bio-based barrier materials as alternatives to petroleum-based films.

Lignin binding to pancreatic lipase and its influence on enzymatic activity

Juan Zhang,Lin Xiao,Yucai Yang,Zhaoxia Wang,Genxi Li

In this paper, we find that the effect of lignin on pancreatic lipase (PL) is dependent on reaction medium and substrate used. Experimental results reveal that lignin can gradually bind to PL to form a PL–lignin complex, resulting in an increased activity of the enzyme. The binding process is spontaneous and the PL–lignin complex formation is an endothermic reaction induced by hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction. There is a non-radiation energy transfer from PL to lignin during the binding process, and the binding of lignin to PL conforms to a secondary exponential decay function. Moreover, the α-helix content of the enzyme will be changed and the rigidity of its side chain will be enhanced due to the formation of lignin–PL complex. This study has not only provided the activation effect of lignin on PL, but also given an insight into the interaction between lignin and the enzyme, which would benefit the application of lignin in the pharmacy and food industry, as well as other fields.

New sustainable Mannich-functionalized lignin flocculants for ultra-efficiently tailoring wastewater purification

Bin Wang,Xue-Fei Cao,Shi-Xin Yu,Zhuo-Hua Sun,Xiao-Jun Shen,Jia-Long Wen,Tong-Qi Yuan

The complex pollutants in wastewater, especially the highly toxic and carcinogenic azo-dyes, seriously endanger the water ecosystem and human health. Using renewable lignin to develop efficient flocculants is of great significance to environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, the preparation process of lignin-based flocculant is not only inefficient and cumbersome, but also brings serious pollution, making their development unsustainable. In this study, a new type of ultra-efficient Mannich-functionalized lignin-based flocculants was prepared by a simple, green strategy. Lignin-based flocculants were synthesized by copolymerizing lignin with acrylamide in a UV-induced aqueous copolymerization system and then modified by Mannich with formaldehyde and diethylenetriamine. Comprehensive considering the influence of molecular weight , charge density and amphiphilicity, herein, two different types of lignin-based flocculant (LBF1 and LBF2) could be precisely tuned by adjusting the dose of formaldehyde and diethylenetriamine. The results showed that the turbidity removal rate of LBF1 for kaolin suspension could be up to 99.31%, and the decolorization rate of Acid Black 1, Direct Red 80 and Reactive Red 2 solutions using LBF2 was more than 99.60%, which outperformed almost all other lignin-based flocculants reported in the previous reports. Moreover, LBF1 and LBF2 showed excellent resistance to the complex external environment, reflecting their outstanding universality.

Effect of structural characteristics on the depolymerization of lignin into phenolic monomers

Cheng Chen,Dongxue Jin,Xinping Ouyang,Lisha Zhao,Xueqing Qiu,Furong Wang

The structure of lignin is one of the key factors affecting its depolymerization into phenolic monomers . Four lignin fractions with different molecular weight were obtained by using ultrafiltration membrane technology , and the characteristics of lignin factions with different molecular weight were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), potentiometric titration , FT-IR and NMR. It is found that wheat alkali lignin with low molecular weight contained more content of phenolic hydroxyl , methoxyl function groups, and β-O-4 linkages, which was relatively prone to depolymerize into phenolic monomers with a higher yield, although the more content of carbonyl was reported to facilitate the depolymerization of lignin. With the increase of molecular weight of lignin, the depolymerization was more difficult, and the YMC decreased. Lignin fraction with low molecular weight was favorable for depolymerization into syringyl and alkyl syringyl, while the high molecular weight lignin was prone to depolymerize into guaiacyl and alkyl guaiacyl products. Boric acid was proved effective to avoid repolymerization and improve the YMC, and the dosage of boric acid was determined by the content of hydroxyl groups in lignin.

Interactions between Holocellulose and Lignin during Hydrolysis of Sawdust in Subcritical Water

Wei Yang,Munan Fang,Hao Xu,Hui Wang,Shengji Wu,Jie Zhou,Shouxin Zhu

To clarify the interactions between holocellulose and lignin, the hydrolysis behaviors of sawdust, holocellulose, lignin, and holocellulose–lignin mixture (HLM) in subcritical water were investigated in the present study, where HLM acted as a model of sawdust without covalent linkages between holocellulose and lignin. Holocellulose in sawdust showed negligible effects on lignin at low reaction temperatures, whereas it might promote the hydrolysis of lignin at higher reaction temperatures. In contrast, the hydrolysis of holocellulose in sawdust was inhibited by lignin due to the high bond dissociation energies of covalent linkages between them. The destruction of covalent linkages mainly occurred at the reaction temperatures of 273–315 °C, due to the high activation energy at this temperature range. However, they could barely be destroyed at the reaction temperatures of 192–273 °C. The lignin inhibited the ring scission and glycosidic bond cleavage of holocellulose, resulting in lower yields of total carbohydrates and furan derivates than those of HLM. In addition, it also suppressed the decomposition of holocellulose hydrolysate to levoglucosenone and aromatic-linked chars. The above results could provide the basis for developing models for predicting product distribution during the hydrolysis of biomass.

Photocatalytic Cleavage of Aryl Ether in Modified Lignin to Non-phenolic Aromatics

Hongji Li,Anon Bunrit,Jianmin Lu,Zhuyan Gao,Nengchao Luo,Huifang Liu,Feng Wang

Depolymerization of lignin meets the difficulty in cleaving the robust aryl ether bond. Herein, through installing an internal nucleophile in the β-O-4′ linkage, the selective cleavage of aryl ether was realized by the intramolecular substitution on aryl rings affording non-phenolic arylamine products. In particular, nitrogen-modified lignin models and lignin samples were employed to generate the iminyl radical under photocatalytic reduction, which acted as the internal nucleophile inducing aryl migration from O to the N atom. The following hydrolysis released primary arylamines and α-hydroxy ketones. Mechanism studies including electron spin resonance (ESR), fluorescence quenching experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved the aryl migration pathway. This method enables access to non-phenolic arylamine products from lignin conversion.
