Using mechanical cues for cancer cells can realize precise control and efficient therapeutic effects. However, the cell cycle-specific response for dynamic mechanical manipulation is barely investigated. Here, RGD-modified iron oxide nanomanipulators were utilized as the intracellular magneto-mechanical transducers to investigate the mechanical impacts on the cell cycle under a dynamic magnetic field for cancer treatment. The G2/M phase was identified to be sensitive to the intracellular magneto-mechanical modulation with a synergistic treatment effect between the pretreatment of cell cycle-specific drugs and the magneto-mechanical destruction, and thus could be an important mechanical-targeted phase for regulation of cancer cell death. Finally, combining the cell cycle-specific drugs with magneto-mechanical manipulation could significantly inhibit glioma and breast cancer growth in vivo . This intracellular mechanical stimulus showed cell cycle-dependent cytotoxicity and could be developed as a spatiotemporal therapeutic modality in combination with chemotherapy drugs for treating deep-seated tumors.

Controlling the membrane surface properties such as hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity is critical to achieving desirable performance. For a long time, the difference between the surface wettabilities of superhydrophilic poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ESMs) and the superhydrophobic parent material is believed to arise from the poling effect induced by the electrospinning process and wicking caused by the porous membrane structure. In this study, the short-term poling effect was eliminated using a reference, centrifugally spun nanofibrous membrane that has a similar fiber morphology and specific surface area to those of the ESM; consequently, we investigated the changes in the surface properties of the ESM in detail. Chemical analysis by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the N and O concentrations are greater at the surface of the ESM. In addition, analysis of the membranes by attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectra revealed that large amounts of cis conformations of the amide bonds appeared on the surface of ESM after the electrospinning process. The results indicate that the remarkable surface properties of PMIA ESMs mainly arise from the change in the conformation of the amide groups from the stable trans form to the cis form. This change was confirmed by the subsequent in situ growth of Pt nanoparticles and the excellent dye adsorption capacity of the membrane.

Effective promotion of air filtration applications proposed for fibers requires their real nanoscale diameter, optimized pore structure, and high service strength; however, creating such filter medium has proved to be a tremendous challenge. This study first establishes a strategy to design and fabricate novel poly( m -phenylene isophthalamide) nanofiber/nets (PMIA NF/N) air filter via electrospinning/netting. Our strategy results in generation of a bimodal structure including a scaffold of nanofibers and abundant two-dimensional ultrathin (~20 nm) nanonets to synchronously construct PMIA filters by combining solution optimization, humidity regulation, and additive inspiration. Benefiting from the structural features including the true nanoscale diameter, small pore size, high porosity, and nets bonding contributed by the widely distributed nanonets, our PMIA NF/N filter exhibits the integrated properties of superlight weight (0.365 g m −2 ), ultrathin thickness (~0.5 μm), and high tensile strength (72.8 MPa) for effective air filtration, achieving the ultra-low penetration air filter level of 99.999% and low pressure drop of 92 Pa for 300–500 nm particles by sieving mechanism. The successful synthesis of PMIA NF/N would not only provide a promising medium for particle filtration, but also develop a versatile platform for exploring the application of nanonets in structural enhancement, separation and purification.

Recently, molybdenum disulfide-based nanocomposites have been widely used in electrochemical sensing area. In this paper, molybdenum disulfide-poly( m -aminobenzenesulfonic acid) (MoS 2 -PABSA) nanocomposite was prepared through a simple electropolymerization procedure for TNT detection. The pre-obtained thin-layered MoS 2 nanosheet was adopted as the scaffold in the electropolymerization process and the m -aminobenzenesulfonic acid monomer was effectively electrodeposited on it via cyclic voltammetry . The morphology and electrochemical behaviors of MoS 2 -PABSA nanocomposite were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and some electrochemical methods. The obtained nanocomposite possesses excellent electrochemical detecting performance towards aromatic ring compounds, such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, TNT, which have strong π-π interaction with the MoS 2 -PABSA sensing platform. The detailed electrochemical characterization of MoS 2 -PABSA showed the influence of electropolymerization cycles and pH values on detection of TNT. Under the optimum condition, highly sensitive detection for TNT was realized with the limit of detection of 0.043 ppb (0.187 nmol L − 1 ) and a linear range of 0.1–200 ppb. This research proves that the MoS 2 -PABSA was a worthy electrochemical sensing platform for further simple and sensitive detection of some other aromatic ring compounds.

Ag-MFe2O4 (M = Co, Mn) nanocomposites were synthesized and loaded onto carbon supports. As-prepared Ag-MFe2O4/C demonstrated higher catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) than Ag+MFe2O4/C. The direct coupling and electron transfer between Ag and MFe2O4 in nanocomposites were proposed to enhance their catalytic activities. The Koutecky-Levich plots confirmed a direct four-electron reaction pathway for the ORR on Ag-MFe2O4/C. Furthermore, Ag-MFe2O4/C showed superior catalytic activities and excellent stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thus, Ag-MFe2O4/C nanoparticle are potential non-Pt candidates with bi-functional catalytic activity for ORR and OER.

The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1400 nm) is ideal for fluorescence imaging owing to negligible tissue scattering and minimal autofluorescence. NIR-II luminescence nanophosphors are promising materials for fluorescence imaging. Mn5+ is emerging as a new luminescent indicator owing to its typical NIR-I (800 nm) to NIR-II (1190 nm) downconversion luminescence. Herein, we report a facile synthesis approach to prepare Mn5+ doped Ba3(MO4)2 (M = V, P) nanoparticles with a remarkably sharp emission peak around 1190 nm in the NIR-II region for the first time to our knowledge. The developed two-step approach based on efficient anion exchange reaction is able to not only stabilize the valence but also keep the controlled morphology and uniform size. It is highly possible that the general approach will provide a new perspective on synthesizing special valence ion doped nanosized materials.

Band offset is a dominant factor affecting the photocatalytic performance of heterostructure photocatalysts . Therefore, controlling the band gap structure of semiconductors is a key challenge in the development of efficient photocatalysts. We used a typical in situ-method to prepare diverse graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) samples from melamine , thiourea , and a mixture thereof, and found that they exhibited band gaps between 2.3–2.8 eV. From UV–Vis spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, we determined that the g-C 3 N 4 samples exhibited different band gap values and valence band positions. On this basis, we constructed g-C 3 N 4 /m-LaVO 4 heterojunctions with different band offsets. UV–Vis spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements revealed that the valence band offsets (VBOs) of the different heterojunctions were similar, but their conduction band offsets (CBOs) were significantly different. Photocatalytic experiments revealed that the reaction rate was enhanced with an increase in the CBO value. Furthermore, the three-phase g-C 3 N 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /m-LaVO4 heterojunction composed of m-LaVO4 and mixed g-C 3 N 4 showed the highest photocatalytic activity , which was mainly due to the construction of a multilevel structure. This work investigates the influence of the band offset on heterojunction photoelectrochemical properties and provides a new strategy to improve the photocatalytic activity by constructing multilevel structures.

Using microwave-assisted synthesis method, a series of paramagnetic ionic liquids comprising 1-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium VRIM + cation and tetrahalogenidoferrate (III) FeCl m Br 4 − m − anion were designed and synthesized. The structure was analyzed using 1 H NMR and Raman spectroscopy. Ultraviolet–visible absorption spectra, thermal stability, magnetic susceptibility, viscosity, ionic conductivity, and solubility were characterized. Results show that elongation of the alkyl chain leads to replacement of bromides with a small amount of chlorides in the anion, shifting of UV maximum absorption peaks to shorter wavelengths, reduction of ionic conductivity, and solubility in polar solvents, as well as increase in fluidity, magnetic susceptibility, and solubility in nonpolar solvents. The g-C3N4/m-Ag2Mo2O7 composite photocatalysts with well-aligned band structures are successfully fabricated by a simple two-step method with different mass contents of m-Ag2Mo2O7. The as-prepared samples are evaluated as photocatalysts toward rhodamine B (RhB) degradation in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The results demonstrate that the photocatalytic activities of the composites are strongly influenced by the weight ratio of g-C3N4 to m-Ag2Mo2O7. When it is 6 : 1, the composite exhibits the highest photocatalytic efficiency. More specifically, this value is as high as 3.4 and 6.1 times that of pure g-C3N4 and P25 respectively. In order to investigate the mechanism causing the enhanced photocatalytic degradation, the band structures are determined by UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy and the Mott–Schottky technique. Moreover, the reactive radicals involved in the photocatalytic process are examined in detail via active species trapping (AST) experiments. The improved photocatalytic activities can be attributed to the efficient separation of the photo-induced charge carriers and the strong redox capacities benefit from the synergetic effect between g-C3N4 and m-Ag2Mo2O7.

Sillenite Bi12MO20 (M = Ti, Ge, Si) nanofibers have been fabricated through a facile electrospinning route for photocatalytic applications. Uniform Bi12MO20 (M = Ti, Ge, Si) nanofibers with diameters of 100–200 nm and lengths of up to several millimeters can be readily obtained by thermally treating the electrospun precursors. The photocatalytic activities of these nanofibers for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) were explored under UV-visible light. The band structure and the degradation mechanisms were also discussed. The fibrous photocatalysts of Bi12TiO20, Bi12SiO20 and Bi12GeO20 exhibit different photocatalytic behaviours, which are attributed to the microstructure, band gap, and electronic structures.

We present a general route for synthesizing M@ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) by using ascorbic acid (AA) to induce deposition of ZnO on various shaped and structured cationic-surfactant-capped NP surfaces (noble, magnetic, semiconductor, rod-like, spherical, cubic, dendrite, alloy, core@shell). The results show that the complexing (AA and Zn2+) and cooperative effects (AA and CTAB) play important roles in the formation of polycrystalline ZnO shells. Besides, the growth kinetics of M@ZnO was systematically studied. It was found that the slow growth rate favors the successful formation of uniform core@ZnO NPs with relatively loose shells. An appropriate growth rate allows achieving high quality M@ZnO NPs with dense shells. However, very fast growth causes significant additional nucleation and the formation of pure ZnO NPs. This general method is suitable for preparing M@ZnO using seed NPs prepared in both water and organic phases. It might be an alternative route for functionalizing NPs for bioapplications (ZnO is biocompatible), modulating material properties as designed, or synthesizing template materials for building other nanostructures.

In this paper, high crystallinity and pure phase VO 2 (M) powder is synthesized by a novel and facile method. Aiding by additional manual grinding and etching process, 22 nm high-quality VO 2 (M) nanoparticles can be obtained. The structure and properties of the VO 2 (M) particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and UV–vis–NIR spectrophotometer. After mixing VO 2 (M) nanoparticles with transparent polymer, thin films prepared by grinded VO 2 nanoparticles show excellent thermochromic properties. The solar modulation ability is up to 12.4% with luminous transmittance of 62.7%. Moreover, The haze of films prepared by grinded VO 2 (M) nanoparticles is down to 1.9%, which is far less than that of films prepared by original VO 2 (Haze = 8.5%) and etched VO 2 particles (Haze = 4.6%). Dramatical improvement of thermochromic property and definition indicate that it is a promising method to prepare large-scale VO 2 nanoparticles and cost-effective smart window.
