Chemical looping dry reforming of methane (CL-DRM) is an efficient pathway for the conversion of methane and CO2 into synthesis gas ready for the Fischer–Tropsch process, which largely depends on the redox behavior of oxygen carriers. Perovskite-structured metal oxides are promising candidates for CL-DRM due to the structural diversity brought about by elemental doping. Herein, we proposed to fabricate a highly active oxygen carrier via functionally designed Mn-based perovskite oxides via polymetallic doping. Cu-doping in the B-site of SrMnO3−δ reveals a significant anti-coking effect in the high-temperature continuous CH4/CO2 redox process. Ni-doping in the B-site boosts the performance of methane activation resulting in high methane conversion. Moreover, Ce-doping in the A-site elevates oxygen migration and enhances partial oxidation of methane to H2 and CO as well as the re-oxidation of reduced perovskite oxides. Considering the roles of Cu, Ni and Ce doping of SrMnO3−δ, a polymetallic-doped perovskite of Sr0.8Ce0.2Mn0.7Cu0.1Ni0.2O3−δ was synthesized and evaluated in CL-DRM. The optimized perovskite oxide demonstrated exceptional performance with a methane conversion of 85% and a CO selectivity of 93% throughout 30 redox cycles at 850 °C. In the redox reactions, the transition metals of Mn, Cu, and Ni agglomerated during the reduction but could return to a well-dispersed state after re-oxidization with CO2. The perovskite oxide exhibits self-structural-regenerability and the nano-scale agglomeration–dispersion cycle ensures the high structural stability of the material in the successive CL-DRM cycles. This study provides an important insight into the regulation of catalytic activity, oxygen mobility and carbon-resistance via doping of perovskite oxides with various kinds of compatible elements in both A and B sites.

The development of inexpensive, highly effective and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen production via water electrolysis is of paramount importance. Transition metal oxides, owing to their simplicity in preparation and cost-effectiveness, have been widely investigated, particularly cobalt, nickel, and manganese oxides. Inspired by the synergies of the ternary cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LiNi x Mn y Co 1- x - y O 2 , NMC), a simple and feasible method was used to prepare a graphite plate as the support, and Ni and Mn were co-doped with Co 3 O 4 as an efficient water decomposition catalyst. Experimental studies indicated that the 10% Ni and 10% Mn co-doped Co 3 O 4 (Co 2.4 Ni 0.3 Mn 0.3 O 4 , CNM-811) exhibited the lowest overpotential in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with CNM-811 achieving an overpotential of 338 mV at 30 mA cm −2 in NaOH aqueous solution, the Tafel slope is 79.71 mV dec −1 . In the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), an overpotential of 190 mV was attained at 10 mA cm −2 . In overall water splitting, a cell voltage of 2.048 V was achieved at 100 mA cm −2 , which was superior to many analogous catalysts reported today.

A sample of Y 2.85 Ca 0.15 Sn 0.08 Ti 0.05 Mn 0.07 Fe 4.8 O 12 doped with four different ions was prepared using the solid method and a subsequent procedure. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to analyze the sample’s structural features, elemental distribution, and surface morphology. The study used the B-H magnetic characteristic analyzer and superconducting quantum interferometer magnetic performance measurement system to analyze the magnetic properties of Y 2.85 Ca 0.15 Sn 0.08 Ti 0.05 Mn 0.07 Fe 4.8 O 12 . The correlation becomes more surprising as the frequency increases, indicating a decrease in permeability when the magnetic field H reaches 200 A/m. Ion substitution leads to changes in magnetic crystal anisotropy, affecting permeability as the external magnetic field strength increases. We analyze the correlation between saturation magnetization and temperature in the 520–540 K range and explain the variation of saturation magnetization with temperature. The study shows that saturation magnetization decreases as temperature increases. This result suggests that saturation magnetization decreases as temperature increases. The increased super-exchange effect due to Ti and Mn occupying the (d) sites is much stronger than the reduced effect caused by Sn occupying the (a) sites. Therefore, the saturation magnetization of the Y 2.85 Ca 0.15 Sn 0.08 Ti 0.05 Mn 0.07 Fe 4.8 O 12 sample is higher than that of the undoped sample. The Curie temperature (Tc) of the Y 2.85 Ca 0.15 Sn 0.08 Ti 0.05 Mn 0.07 Fe 4.8 O 12 sample is lower than that of the undoped sample.

Layered Mn-based cathode (K x MnO 2 ) has attracted wide attention for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) because of its high specific capacity and energy density. However, the structure and capacity of K x MnO 2 cathode are constantly degraded during the cycling due to the strong Jahn-Teller effect of Mn 3+ and huge ionic radius of K + . In this work, lithium ion and interlayer water were introduced into Mn layer and K layer in order to suppress the Jahn-Teller effect and expand interlayer spacing, respectively, thus obtaining new types of K 0.4 Mn 1-x Li x O 2 ·0.33H 2 O cathode materials. The interlayer spacing of the K 0.4 MnO 2 increased from 6.34 to 6.93 Å after the interlayer water insertion. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies demonstrated that proper lithium doping can effectively control the ratio of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ and inhibit the Jahn-Teller effect. In-situ X-ray diffraction exhibited that lithium doping can inhibit the irreversible phase transition and improve the structural stability of materials during cycling. As a result, the optimal K 0.4 Mn 0.9 Li 0.1 O 2 ·0.33H 2 O not only delivered a higher capacity retention of 84.04 % compared to the value of 28.09 % for K 0.4 MnO 2 ·0.33H 2 O, but also maintained a greatly enhanced rate capability. This study provides a new opportunity for designing layered manganese-based cathode materials with high performance for PIBs.

Microspinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a widely used cathode material in power lithium-ion batteries. However, inevitable Mn dissolution and dynamic phase instability will cause the degradation of microspinel LMO during cycling. Here, a low-tortuosity LMO (LMO-LT) electrode is fabricated by an ice-templating method, which exhibits enhanced dynamic phase stability, alleviated Mn dissolution, and rare particle microcracks during cycling. It is shown that the low-tortuosity electrode enables fast lithium-ion diffusion and thus small concentration polarization, leading to uniform electrochemical reaction within microregions of the LMO-LT electrode. Furthermore, the fast lithium-ion transport kinetics and even mesoscopic scale reactions of the LMO-LT electrode effectively alleviate irreversible phase transition and Mn dissolution as well as suppress crack generation in LMO particles. As a result, the full cell [negative-to-positive capacity ratio (N/P) = 1.1] with thick LMO-LT cathode (13 mg cm−2) and Li4Ti5O12 anode sustains 80.0% capacity over 200 cycles. The LMO-LT electrode further delivers 78.9% capacity of that at 0.1 C at the high rate of 5 C. This work provides an important strategy to enhance dynamic phase stability and suppress Mn dissolution at the mesoscopic scale, promoting the development of high-performance LMO electrodes.

High-power PZT-based piezoelectric ceramics with high electromechanical properties are in urgent demand in the market. In this study, Mn ions were introduced into 0.36 Pb(Ni 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –0.28PbZrO 3 –0.36PbTiO 3 (PNN–PZT) ceramics in the form of Pb(Mn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 (PMnN) to synthesize a quaternary piezoelectric ceramic ( x PMnN–PNN–PZT) with coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases. The addition of PMnN caused the grain sizes to continuously decrease from 3.29 μm to 1.58 μm. However, the density first increased and then decreased, reaching a maximum value of 8.02 g/cm 3 at x = 0.07. The increased internal bias field ( E i ) and domain size suppressed the domain wall motion and domain switching, reducing internal friction and improving the mechanical quality factor ( Q m ). Compared with Q m ∼146 of undoped PNN–PZT ceramics, the maximum Q m of 0.07PMnN-PNN-PZT reached approximately 2244. And the Vickers hardness of x PMnN–PNN–PZT ceramics was promoted from ∼356 HV ( x = 0) to ∼480 HV ( x = 0.07). In addition, the other optimal electromechanical performances: piezoelectric coefficient d 33 = 202 pC/N, planar electromechanical coupling coefficient k p = 0.45, Curie temperature T c = 198 and dielectric loss tan δ = 0.0059 were also achieved at x = 0.07. This work provides a feasible way for the development and application of high-power piezoelectric ceramics.

Near-infrared (NIR)-responsive photothermal materials are critical for solar energy conversion, yet conventional materials face limitations in efficiency, stability, and spectral tunability. Herein, we report a Mn-doped Prussian blue intercalated MgAl-layered double hydroxide (Mn-PB@LDHs) synthesized via a separate nucleation and aging steps (SNAS) method, achieving synergistic enhancement in photothermal performance and stability. The optimized Mn-PB@LDH-3 exhibits a high photothermal conversion efficiency (75.10% under 808 nm laser, 0.5 W·cm⁻²) and solar-driven water evaporation performance (1.60 kg·m⁻²·h⁻¹, 97.93% under 1 kW·m⁻² simulated sunlight). Moderate Mn²⁺ doping optimizes the Prussian blue electronic structure by enhancing metal-to-metal charge transfer and reducing resistance, while excessive doping amount induces Jahn–Teller distortion and electron localization, impairing efficiency. The MgAl-LDH host confers stability via nanoconfinement (suppressing structural degradation) and electrostatic interactions (inhibiting metal leaching under alkaline conditions). This work presents a high-performance, stable photothermal material and establishes a generalizable host–guest strategy for advanced solar energy conversion applications.

Moderate Mn doping at x = 0.01 pins ferroelectric domains, yielding slim hysteresis loops and optimal energy-storage efficiency. • Higher Mn doping of x ≥ 0.02 induces a phase transition of coexisting AFE P and FE Q phases, in which the FE Q phase can broaden hysteresis loops and increase energy-storage density. • With increasing doping content of Mn, the site of Mn substitution transitions from A site to B site. (1- x )NaNbO 3 - x MnO 2 ceramics were synthesized via solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement shows that increasing Mn content induces a phase transition from a single antiferroelectric P phase ( Pbcm ) to the coexistence of P and ferroelectric Q phases ( P2 1 ma ). Scanning electron microscopy indicates that Mn doping promotes grain growth. Dielectric patterns demonstrate that moderate Mn doping with x = 0.01 effectively suppresses leakage current and reduces dielectric loss (tanδ = 0.526 at 25 °C and 56.4 MHz). Electrical measurements show that the composition of x = 0.01 achieves the optimal energy-storage efficiency, and the composition of x = 0.025 attains the recoverable energy-storage density of 0.531 J/cm 3 . The study illustrates that Mn doping tunes phase composition and defects, thereby optimizing the energy-storage properties of lead-free NaNbO 3 -based ceramics.

Spin engineering via Mn doping precisely steers Co spin state in NiCo 2 O 4 , beyond the conventional d-band center regulation. • Mn-NCO exhibits a low overpotential of 265 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and outstanding durability over 500 h in alkaline electrolyte. • Mn acts as a spin switch to optimize *O adsorption, lowering rate‑limiting barrier from 2.84 to 1.64 eV. • Practical potential is demonstrated via a stable AEM water electrolyzer, bridging fundamental research and application. While regulating the d -band center is a widely adopted strategy for optimizing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, it often lacks the precision required for selectively lowering the high energy barrier of the rate-determining step (e.g., *O → *OOH). This work introduces a spin engineering approach via manganese (Mn) doping to effectively tailor the electronic structure of NiCo 2 O 4 (NCO). The Mn-doped NCO porous microspheres, synthesized through a facile solvothermal-oxidation route, deliver outstanding OER performance in 1.0 M KOH, requiring an overpotential of only 265 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 current density and maintaining exceptional stability for 500 h. Moreover, the catalyst shows great promise in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer. Density functional theory calculations disclose that Mn serves as a “spin switch”, promoting a transition of Co active sites from high-spin (magnetic moment ∼2.4 μB) to low-spin (∼1.9 μB) states. This spin-state modulation selectively weakens the adsorption of the critical *O intermediate, thereby markedly reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step from 2.84 eV to 1.64 eV, without significantly perturbing other intermediates. This work not only reports a highly active OER electrocatalyst but also illuminates the pivotal role of spin-state manipulation, offering a new paradigm for designing high-performance electrocatalytic materials. Mn doping serves as a spin switch in NiCo 2 O 4 electrocatalyst, modulating the active Co site from high spin to low spin state to optimize *O adsorption and significantly lower the rate-determining step energy barrier from 2.84 to 1.64 eV. The high energy consumption of lead anodes in zinc production is caused by the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We made a La-Mn co-doped β-PbO2anode using electrodeposition to solve this issue. The XRD and XPS results show that adding La shrinks the lattice and changes the electron structure. This helps Mn4+change into active Mn3+and creates more active oxygen on the surface, making the reaction easier. EIS tests show that the charge transfer resistance (Rct) decreased by 4.2 times, decreasing from 147.6 Ω to 34.72 Ω at 1.0 V. The Bode phase peak also moved to a lower frequency (from 122 Hz to 0.215 Hz), proving that the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) increased significantly. At the industrial current of 50 mA cm−2, the anode shows a low overpotential of 840 mV and a Tafel slope of 265 mV dec−1. This improved performance saves 187.10 kWh of energy per ton of zinc. Therefore, the LaMn-β-PbO2anode is a promising and energy-saving option for industrial zinc production.

Iron ion (Fe(III)) plays a crucial role in many physiological processes, and both excess and deficiency of Fe(III) can lead to diseases. Therefore, developing simple and reliable methods for detecting Fe(III) is of great importance. Based on a novel Mn-based material (coordination of manganese with 2,6-dicarboxypyridine, Mn-DPA) prepared in this study with Fe(III)-enhanced peroxidase-like activity, an efficient fluorescence method was developed for Fe(III) detection. The method demonstrated excellent analytical performance in detecting Fe(III), such as superior selectivity and an extremely low detection limit (0.66 nM). Furthermore, the mechanism of Fe(III) enhancing the enzyme-like activity of Mn-DPA was investigated, and the results suggest that the addition of Fe(III) can promote the generation of active intermediates (hydroxyl radicals) during the reaction. Additionally, Mn-DPA based fluorescence method has been successfully applied to detect Fe(III) in spinach, with recovery rates in the range of 90.9 %–115.6 %. The fluorescence method established in this study holds significant application potential for Fe(III) detection.
