Safe and effective coagulants are necessary for surface water treatment. The polyaluminum-titanium chloride (PATC) composite coagulant has promise but its application is limited due to the lack of fundamental theoretical research. We prepared a series of novel PATCs and investigated the effects of the interaction between Al (III) and Ti (IV) on the chemical species distribution, physicochemical properties and coagulation efficiencies. The Al-O-Ti bonds observed in the PATC infrared spectra were predicted by density functional theory computation to appear in 4-atom rings in the structure. The differences in Al species distribution of PATC and PAC illustrated that the introduction of Ti retarded the hydrolysis of monomeric Al species (Al a ) and medium polymerized Al species (Al b ) to colloidal Al species (Al c ) at low B levels, but the transformation was promoted at high basicities (B). PATCs exhibited higher charge densities and larger molecular weights than PAC at the same B levels, which contributed to their excellent coagulation efficiencies. PATC with low B values but high Al/Ti molar ratios mainly provided charge neutralization in removal of humic acid kaolin, while the dominant coagulation mechanism converted from charge neutralization to sweeping and bridging effects at high B values or low Al/Ti molar ratios.

Replacing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is of high energy consumption and slow kinetics, with the more thermodynamically favorable reaction at the anode can reduce the electricity consumption for hydrogen production. Here we developed a lignin-assisted water electrolysis (LAWE) process by using Ti/PbO2 with high OER overpotential as the anode aimed at decreasing the energy consumption for hydrogen production. The influence of key operating parameters such as temperature and lignin concentration on hydrogen production was analyzed. Compared with alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), the anode potential can be decreased from 0.773 to 0.303 (V vs. Hg/HgO) at 10 mA/cm2 in LAWE, and the corresponding cell voltage can be reduced by 546 mV. With increasing the temperature and lignin concentration, current density and H2 production rate were efficiently promoted. Furthermore, the anode deactivation was investigated by analyzing the linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests. Results showed that the anode deactivation was affected by the temperature.

Visible-light-active MR/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) homojunction was successfully synthesized via post-synthetic modification of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti). A chromophore group (–MR) similar to the structure of methyl red, was introduced to partially replace the –NH 2 group. Using pure NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) and MR-MIL-125(Ti) as control samples, the possible structural and optical changes were carefully studied. It was found that the lattice structure remained unchanged, while the specific surface area and band gap were in the order of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) > MR/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) > MR-MIL-125(Ti). Despite of these, MR/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) exhibited highest photocurrent response and lowest charge transfer resistance, which were associated with optimal photocatalytic performance. For the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI), the estimated rate constant on MR/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) was ca. 9 times and 3 times relative to that on NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) and MR-MIL-125(Ti), respectively. Besides, 4.6 times rate enhancement can also be observed on the homojunction relative to physical mixture (MR/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)-PM). The boosted photocatalytic performance may be ascribed to promoted separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The operating factors was optimized at acidic pH (2.0), lower catalyst dosage (0.1 g/L) and appropriate concentration of coexisting organics (2.0 mM) within the tested range. Furthermore, good stability both in photocatalytic performance and structure were also observed after 5 cyclic runs. Thus, this study report a facile way for the construction of visible-light-active MOFs, and provided a stable photocatalytic candidate for the disposal of Cr(VI)-containing wastewaters.

When biomaterials are implanted in the human body, the surfaces of the implants become favorable sites for microbial adhesion and biofilm formation, causing peri-implant infection which frequently results in the failure of prosthetics and revision surgery. Ti–Mo alloy is one of the commonly used implant materials for load-bearing bone replacement, and the prevention of infection of Ti–Mo implants is therefore crucial. In this study, bacterial inhibitory copper (Cu) was added to Ti–Mo matrix to develop a novel Ti–Mo–Cu alloy with bacterial inhibitory property. The effects of Cu content on microstructure, tensile properties, cytocompatibility, and bacterial inhibitory ability of Ti–Mo–Cu alloy were systematically investigated. Results revealed that Ti–10Mo–1Cu alloy consisted of α and β phases, while there were a few Ti 2 Cu intermetallic compounds existed for Ti–10Mo–3Cu and Ti–10Mo–5Cu alloys, in addition to α and β phases. The tensile strength of Ti–10Mo-xCu alloy increased with Cu content while elongation decreased. Ti–10Mo–3Cu alloy exhibited an optimal tensile strength of 1098.1 MPa and elongation of 5.2%. Cytocompatibility study indicated that none of the Ti–10Mo-xCu alloys had a negative effect on MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation. Bacterial inhibitory rates against S. aureus and E. coli increased with the increase in Cu content of Ti–10Mo-xCu alloy, within the ranges of 20–60% and 15–50%, respectively. Taken together, this study suggests that Ti–10Mo–3Cu alloy with high strength, acceptable elongation, excellent cytocompatibility, and the bacterial inhibitory property is a promising candidate for biomedical implant applications.

Ti-coated diamond with different particle sizes and proper amounts of cubic boron nitride (cBN) was used to fabricate polycrystalline diamond composite (PDC) with improved wear resistance and thermal stability under high temperature and high pressure (5.5–6.5GPa, 1500–1650 °C). The ratio of Ti-coated diamond powder, cBN powder and normal diamond powder was W 30 – 50 : W 4 – 8 : W 0 – 1 = 70: 15: 15. Cobalt (Co) was used as a binder, and cemented tungsten carbide was used as a substrate to sinter a new high-performance PDC. Ti and TiC on the surface of Ti-coated diamond reacted with cBN under high temperature and high pressure to generate new ceramic phases such as TiB 2 , TiN and TiN 0.3 , which have high hardness and good wear resistance. Compared with the conventional PDC, the impact toughness and wear resistance of PDC with Ti-coated diamond and cBN addition were enhanced by 19% and 28%, respectively. The ceramic phase acts as a protective barrier, which enhances the initial graphitization and oxidizing temperature to 942–950 °C, which were 162–170 °C higher than the conventional PDC. The new ceramic barrier wrapped around the surface of the diamond and Co after the formation of the D-D (diamond-diamond) bonding will give priority to the oxidation reaction of Co and diamond with oxygen, which prohibits cobalt-catalytic graphitization of diamond, meeting the needs of PDC thermal stability and wear resistance in the field of drilling.

The poor conductivity and sluggish kinetics of hematite (α-Fe2O3) limit its photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Herein, a cobalt metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) ultrathin overlayer is in situ-grown onto a Ti-doped hematite nanorod array via the chemical bath deposition. The optimal Co-MOF/Ti:Fe2O3 achieves a photocurrent density of 2.24 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V [vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)], which is 2.4-folds that of pristine Fe2O3. When compared with the onset potential of Ti:Fe2O3, Co-MOF/Ti:Fe2O3 exhibits a cathodic shift of 310 mV. Co-MOF/Ti:Fe2O3 also shows a photocurrent density retention of 98.1% after the 6 h stability test. The improved PEC activity is mostly ascribed to the increased charge separation and surface charge injection. Ti doping increases the electron density in Fe2O3 and lowers the Fermi level (vs RHE), facilitating the charge transport in the bulk. The enhanced photovoltage and favorable distribution of surface states after Co-MOF modification and the catalytic/conductive properties of Co-MOF induce the enhanced charge separation/injection and the low onset potential.

In this study, porous Ti/Magnéli Ti 4 O 7 nanotube arrays (NTA) was fabricated to pretreat antibiotic wastewater. Characterization of the Ti 4 O 7 -NTA illustrated that highly ordered NTA was successfully generated on the porous Ti substrate, which enlarged the specific surface area by 1.67 times. The Ti 4 O 7 -NTA has a high oxygen evolution potential (2.60 V) as well as low interfacial charge transfer resistance (4.479 Ω cm −2 ). Ceftriaxone sodium (CRO) was completely removed from raw antibiotic wastewater after 3 h of treatment by the Ti 4 O 7 -NTA, under optimal operation conditions. The biodegradability and toxicity of the wastewater were also significantly enhanced and reduced, as the BOD/COD and EC 50,48h values were increased to 0.48 and 57.62 % ± 2.16 %, respectively. The possible degradation pathway of CRO was proposed by LC‒MS. Cathodic polarization was proven to be an effective way to ensure the long-term durability of the Ti 4 O 7 -NTA.

TiB 2 reinforced Ti(C,N)-based cermet was produced by the reaction spark plasma sintering of Co, Ni, Ti, C, BN, Mo 2 C, WC, and TaC mixtures. To understand the mechanism of reaction sintering, systematic investigation on the microstructure evolution and displacement variation rule was carried out. In addition, the influence of C/BN molar ratio on the microstructures and performances of cermet was investigated. Except an initially increased pressure, three densification patterns were found. The first method was the Co Ti, Ti Ni, and Ti-BN diffusion reactions, resulting in a shrinkage of 22.06%. The second pattern was the viscous flow and dissolution-reprecipitation, which corresponded to the synthesis of Ti(C,N) and TiB 2 . In this process, the shrinkage ratio was increased by 35.62%. The final densification mainly originated from the viscous flow of metallic binder. It contributed to the transformation of macrovoids into microvoids, and an increased displacement of 30.10%. With the increasing of C/BN ratio, more C atoms diffused into Ti(C,N). Furthermore, core/rim structure-Ti(C,N) and coreless (W,Mo,Ta,Ti)(C,N) were fabricated. However, the microvoids in cermets enhanced. As a result, the hardness and fracture toughness first increased and then decreased. Results from this work are helpful to understand the reaction spark plasma sintering technique, and can enrich the preparation method of cermet.

Degradation of refractory organics has been limited by their low mass-transport rates in conventional flow-by operated electrochemical reactors. This study explores for the first time the development of porous titanium (Ti)-based metal oxide anodic membrane for efficient flow-through degradation of recalcitrant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). For this purpose, a duplexed Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce anodic membrane was successfully prepared by sol-gel and electrodeposition methods. Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce exhibited improved mechanical and electrochemical stability, larger electrochemical surface area, higher oxygen evolution potential and lower charge transfer resistance, as compared to its mono-layered rival (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb). The switching from flow-by to flow-through operation resulted in an increased mass transfer rate constant and narrowed diffusion layer thickness of Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce. In the flow-through mode, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Ce enabled the complete TBBPA removal at a relatively low electric energy (0.11 kWh m −3 ). The TBBPA removal was ascribed to the direct anodic oxidation and indirect anodic oxidation incurred by absorbed HO , free HO and 1 O 2 . The intermediate products, which were arisen from the attack of TBBPA by these reactive species, were identified. We further estimated their acute toxicities and bioaccumulation factors. This research proposed a robust electrochemical filtration approach for detoxification of TBBPA-contaminated water.

Effectively regulating and promoting the charge separation and transfer of photoanodes is a key and challenging aspect of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. Herein, a Ti-doped hematite photoanode with a CoFe-LDH cocatalyst loaded on the surface was prepared through a series of processes, including hydrothermal treatment, annealing and electrodeposition. The prepared CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3photoanode exhibited an outstanding photocurrent density of 3.06 mA/cm2at 1.23 VRHE, which is five times higher than that of α-Fe2O3alone. CoFe-LDH modification and Ti doping on hematite can boost the surface charge transfer efficiency, which is mainly attributed to the interface interaction between CoFe-LDH and Ti:α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, we investigated the role of Ti doping in enhancing the PEC performance of CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3. A series of characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that, in addition to improving the electronic conductivity of the bulk material, Ti doping also further enhances the interface coupling of CoFe-LDH/α-Fe2O3and finely regulates the interfacial electronic structure. These changes promote the rapid extraction of holes from hematite and facilitate charge separation and transfer. The informative findings presented in this work provide valuable insights for the design and construction of hematite photoanodes, offering guidance for achieving excellent performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation.

Owing to the low-cost and fast process, molten salt electrolysis is considered as a novel method to replace the Kroll process for preparing titanium. However, this process has not been fully realized because of the multi-step reduction and complicated disproportionation behaviors of multivalent titanium ions in melt. To address such critical problems, here we use liquid metals (Sn and Pb) as the cathode instead of solid metal cathode (Mo) during the electrolysis, in which the reduction process of Ti3+ (TiF63−) becomes a simple one-step process (Ti3+ + 3e = Ti (alloys)). Also, the deposition potential is more positive (>0.5 V) than that using solid Mo, owing to the depolarizing effect of the liquid metals. One-step process and depolarization behavior are favorable to increase the current efficiency, effectively decreasing the power consumption in comparison with the conventional electrolysis at solid metal cathodes. Similar to the electrolytic production of aluminum in Hall-Heroult system, there would be a continuous electrolysis process because the product is liquid alloy in this system.

A simple synthesis has been developed for watermelon-like nanocomposites with Ti-based oxides as the matrix. Using the case of Sb nanocrystals in amorphous TiPO x as an example, in-situ/ex-situ techniques, first-principle calculations and control experiments confirm that the formation of Ti-based oxides promotes the reduction of Sb 3+ to Sb by NH 3 at an elevated temperature. A similar synthesis process also succeeds for Sb nanocrystals in amorphous TiO 2 and for Bi nanocrystals in amorphous TiPO x , confirming the promising potential of this synthesis. More importantly, the nanocomposite composed by crystalline Sb in an amorphous TiPO x matrix, as the anode material for sodium storage, concurrently exhibits a long cycle life (~1000 cycles) and a high capacity retention (~82%), suggesting the advantages of watermelon-like structures.
