Cholesterol is a vital biomolecule in the human body. Abnormal blood cholesterol levels may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a highly sensitive and rapid method of detecting cholesterol concentration in clinical settings. To meet this demand, we developed a reflective fiber-optic cholesterol sensor based on multimode and single-mode fibers (MMF-SMF). The probe uses AuNPs, synthesised using the sodium citrate reduction method, as a sensitising material, and cholesterol oxidase serves as the sensing membrane. This reflective optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor enables the detection of cholesterol concentration with high sensitivity. Experimental results demonstrated that Au film- AuNPs coupling enhances the refractive index sensitivity by 41.3 % to 2243.9 nm/RIU. Cholesterol detection sensitivity increases by 16.02 % to 0.210 nm/nM, and the linear detection range expands from 0–50 nM to 0–70 nM and the detection limit decreases to 4.586 nM. The sensor also exhibits excellent selectivity and stability, and can be used for the detection of cholesterol concentration in real serum samples, offering an efficient solution for developing portable biosensors.

Electrochemical N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions provides sustainable and green pathways; meanwhile, efficient electrocatalysts are strongly required. In this work, we report an interfacial active site strategy to improve the electrocatalytic NRR performance by modification of Au nanowire (Au NW) surface with oxygen-rich tannic acid (TA). Benefiting from their ultrafine one-dimensional nanowire architecture and the TA-modified metallic interface, the TA-Au NWs effectively facilitate the adsorption and activation of reactants. The TA-Au NWs exhibit a large NH 3 yield rate (15.71 μg h −1 mg −1 cat. ) and a high Faraday efficiency of 14.83% at −0.3 V (vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode) in a N 2 -saturated 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 with an excellent electrochemical durability. This work provides a general surface modification strategy to fabricate highly active NRR electrocatalysts.

The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions is currently attracting intense attention, but it still remains a great challenge to develop highly selective and active NRR electrocatalysts. Inspired by the intrinsic NRR activity of Au, we systematically studied the synergistic enhanced effect of incorporating other transition metals into Au on its NRR activity. A general strategy was used to synthesize a series of Au-based bimetallic nanocatalysts (AuCu, AuAg, AuPd and AuRu), and the NRR catalytic performance of the as-obtained electrocatalysts was investigated in detail. The experimental results indicate that the positive effect of Cu on NRR was the most remarkable in comparison with that of Ag, Ru and Pd, which can be ascribed to the synergy of the Au and Cu components via modulating the electronic structure and further changing the binding affinity of adsorbed N atoms on the catalyst. Finally, the optimized nanocatalyst with the atom ratio of Au1Cu1 achieved the highest faradaic efficiency (54.96%) and ammonia yield rate (154.91 μg h−1 mgcat−1) at −0.2 V vs. RHE, exceeding those of the previously reported Au nanocatalysts.

Fabrication of hybrid nanostructures with complex morphologies and high photocatalytic activity is a difficult challenge because these particles require extremely high preparation skills and are not always practical. Here, hierarchical flower-like Au@CdS-CdS nanoparticles (Au@CdS-CdS nanoflowers) have been synthesized using a stepwise method. The Au@CdS-CdS nanoflowers are consisted of Au core, CdS shell, and CdS nanorods. The UV-Vis absorption range of the Au@CdS-CdS nanoflowers reaches up to 850 nm which covers the whole visible range (400–760 nm). Photoinduced charge transfer property of Au@CdS-CdS nanoflowers was demonstrated using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Compared to CdS counterparts and Au@CdS counterparts, Au@CdS-CdS nanoflowers demonstrated the highest photocatalytic degradation rate under irradiation of λ = 400–780 nm and λ = 600–780 nm, respectively. Based on structure and morphology analyses, we have proposed a possible formation mechanism of the hybrid nanostructure which can be used to guide the design of other metal-semiconductor nanostructures with complex morphologies.

A novel light “on–off” photoelectrochemical sensing for the sensitive determination of hydroquinone was developed based on the porphyrin-functionalized Au nanoparticles on graphene (porphyrin/AuNPs/graphene). Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were firstly modified onto graphene sheets using NaBH 4 as reductant and the porphyrin/AuNPs/graphene nanocomposites were then synthesized by self-assembly decoration of sulfhydryl porphyrin on AuNPs modified graphene sheets by S–Au bond. The porphyrin/AuNPs/graphene nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron , and ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopies . The nanocomposites showed good dispersion in water and on indium tin oxide (ITO) surface. The resulting porphyrin/AuNPs/graphene modified ITO electrode showed good photoelectrochemical behavior toward the oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) at 0 V under white light illumination. The proposed photoelectrochemical method could detect hydroquinone with a wide linear response ranging from 20 to 240 nM ( R =0.9914). The detection limit was 4.6 nM for HQ ( S / N =3). Thus, the nanocomposites would be expected to be a novel photoactive material for photoelectrochemical biosensing.

Pd-based nanostructures with stepped facets possess potential applications in many fields, particularly in catalysis. Generally, crystal growth often only allows the formation of nanostructures with energetically non-stepped facets, so it is desirable to develop methods that can be used to prepare Pd-based nanostructures bounded by stepped facets. Herein, penta-fold twinned (PFT) Au@Pd nanobipyramids (NBs) with stepped {100} facets were synthesized through growing Pd on Au decahedral nanoparticles (NPs) in polyol. During the growth of Au@Pd NBs, Br− was a critical factor, because it has appropriate affinity for the Pd atom and adjusted the growth rate ratio along 〈110〉 and 〈100〉, resulting in the formation of Au@Pd NBs with stepped {100} facets. The product shape and size could be tailored by controlling the reaction conditions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging and scanning transmission electron microscopy EDS (STEM-EDS) were used to investigate the structure and growth of the Au@Pd NBs. A growth mechanism involving two stages was elucidated. In the first stage, the growth of Pd clearly occurred along both 〈110〉 and 〈100〉. In the second stage, the growth along 〈110〉 was faster than that along 〈100〉. Furthermore, we also demonstrated that the as-prepared Au@Pd NBs had high catalytic activity, compared with Pd nanocubes and Pd–Au–Pd segmental nanorods.

Modification with Au nanoparticles on the surface of semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) is a simple and effective mean to improve the sensing performance of pristine SMO sensor. ZnO nanorods are prepared via a simple precipitation reaction and subsequently modified by catalytic Au nanoparticles with effect on the surface through an ammonia deposition method. The gas response of sensor based on ZnO nanorods modified by Au nanoparticles is improved by 6.6 times to 100 ppm acetone at the optimal operating temperature of 172 °C, which is reduced from 219 °C for pristine ZnO sensor. Meanwhile, the response/recovery time is shortened to 1 s/20 s from 13 s/29 s. In addition, the sensing enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the electronic and chemical sensitization effects of Au nanoparticles.

A flexible Ag NWs/WO 3- x /Au memristor is successfully fabricated. • The device achieves an ultra-low energy consumption of 3.89 fJ per pulse. • The device achieves a competitive ECG recognition accuracy of 94.3%. • The device exhibits robust mechanical flexibility. The simultaneous achievement of high mechanical flexibility, ultra-low energy consumption, and high recognition accuracy remains a major challenge for wearable intelligent devices. Here, we report a flexible memristive device capable of emulating biological synaptic functions, fabricated with a spin-coated flexible Ag nanowire (NW) bottom electrode, an electrodeposited conformal WO 3- x coating as the functional layer, and an evaporation-defined Au top electrode. With a stacked Ag NWs/WO 3- x /Au architecture and strong interfacial bonding from the conformal coating, the device exhibits robust mechanical flexibility and cycling stability. Notably, the device achieves an ultra-low average energy consumption of merely 3.89 fJ per spike, attributed to the electrodeposition process that generates abundant short-range continuous oxygen vacancies, which shorten the ion migration path and lower the diffusion barrier, thereby enabling conductive filament formation at low voltages. When applied to electrocardiogram (ECG) signal recognition, the device achieves an accuracy of 94.3%, with negligible performance degradation after 2000 bending cycles, underscoring its robust flexibility. These advantages position this memristor as a promising building block for wearable ECG monitoring systems. Download: Download high-res image (221KB) Download: Download full-size image

Real-time, synchronous profiling of key inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α is critical for understanding and managing dysregulated immune responses, including cytokine storms associated with severe infections. However, conventional immunoassays are not readily compatible with the requirements of rapid, multiplexed analysis in point-of-care settings. Herein, we report a multiplexed electrochemical biosensing platform based on biomimetic interfacial encoding using Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoplatforms (BIENs). The core sensing element consists of extracellular vesicle-mimetic nanocomposites functionalized with cell membranes overexpressing specific cytokine receptors, enabling native-like molecular recognition. This encoded biomimetic interface affords high-affinity and selective detection of IFN-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α with wide linear ranges (0.1 ~ 1000 pg/mL) and low detection limits (0.043 ~ 0.159 pg/mL). The sensor exhibits excellent selectivity, operational stability, and reproducibility, and maintains high accuracy in serum samples with minimal matrix interference. Beyond analytical performance, this work establishes a receptor-mimetic interfacial encoding strategy for multiplexed biosensing, offering a versatile and scalable paradigm for the development of next-generation intelligent biointerfaces and dynamic immune monitoring systems. Modified PDMS with APTES and n-hexane enables in-situ self-assembly of AuNPs. • 2D MXene overlayer on AuNPs boosts SERS sensitivity and ensures sensor stability. • The flexible MXene/Au/PDMS sensor yields a high enhancement factor of 6.5 × 10 4 . • The SERS platform achieves LODs of 10 −10 g mL −1 (TBZ) and 2.25 × 10 −10 M (TC). • Swab-sampling enables rapid detection of pesticide residues on fruit surfaces. The overuse of pesticides and antibiotics in agriculture poses significant risks to food safety and human health, necessitating rapid and sensitive detection methods. This study develops a novel, flexible Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERSa) platform by integrating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and 2D MXene nanosheets on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix for the ultra-sensitive trace detection of pesticide residues. To simplify conventional fabrication methods, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and n-hexane were directly incorporated into the PDMS prepolymer, enabling the uniform in-situ self-assembly of AuNPs via straightforward immersion in a chloroauric acid precursor. The subsequent addition of layered MXene nanosheets not only boosted SERS sensitivity through synergistic enhancement but also functioned as a protective barrier to ensure superior substrate stability. The optimized MXene/Au/PDMS sensor demonstrated exceptional SERS performance, achieving a high Enhancement Factor (EF) of 6.5 × 10 4 . Utilizing a simple swab-sampling technique, the flexible substrate effectively collected and identified trace residues directly from apple and cherry tomato surfaces. The platform achieved highly sensitive quantitative analysis, with limits of detection (LOD) reaching 10 −10 M for TBZ and tetracycline. Additionally, the sensor exhibited consistent large-scale spatial reproducibility and maintained robust environmental stability over a one-month storage period. These results confirm that the proposed flexible SERS substrate is a reliable and practical tool for the rapid, on-site monitoring of food safety hazards. Abstract The direct deployment of metal−organic framework (MOF) as an electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction is often hampered by their intrinsically poor conductivity, the adsorption−desorption trade-off in intermediate binding energetics, and limited formation of multi-carbon products. To address these challenges, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were encapsulated within reconstructed nanowire-like structures derived from a copper-based 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate framework (CuBDC) via an in situ reduction strategy, forming an Au/CuBDC-4 composite. Despite the resulting structural disordering and partial copper loss, the optimized catalyst achieved a notable Faradaic efficiency of 60% for ethylene (C2H4) and 73% for C2+ at −0.8 V vs RHE, along with a significantly suppressed hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Electrochemical analyses reveal increased Cdl and reduced charge-transfer resistance and a lower Tafel slope, indicating improved interfacial accessibility and charge-transfer kinetics. In situ Raman spectroscopy identifies potential-dependent vibrational bands associated with metal−CO-related and CO-derived surface species, suggesting the formation of reaction-induced intermediates under CO2RR conditions. When combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the cooperative roles of Au and Cu sites at the Au/CuBDC-n interface are further supported. Au sites may facilitate *CO formation and increase local *CO availability adjacent to Cu sites, while the same Cu sites provide favorable sites for C−C coupling with a lower calculated free-energy requirement. The resulting interfacial cooperation, together with increased catalytic-interface accessibility, facilitated interfacial charge transport and more efficient utilization of Cu sites, thereby promoting C2H4 formation. This work offers insights into the rational design of MOF-based synergistic catalysts with high selectivity and low overpotential for efficient CO2 valorization.

Silver nanowires (AgNWs)-based transparent conductive films (TCFs) have emerged as highly promising alternatives to indium tin oxide (ITO) for flexible optoelectronic devices, but still face the challenge of electrical stability of AgNWs. Herein, highly electrically stable Ag-Au core-shell nanowires-based TCFs (Au@AgNWs TCFs) were fabricated by slot-die coating. Gold is uniformly grown on the surface of AgNWs by in situ reduction to construct Ag-Au core-shell structure with a gold shell thickness of 10 nm. The resultant Au@AgNWs TCF has superior optoelectronic properties with a transmittance of 92 % at 550 nm and a sheet resistance of 45 Ω/sq. Compared to the uncoated AgNWs TCF, the Au@AgNWs TCF shows slightly reduced optoelectronic performance, but exhibits significantly enhanced electrical stability. Under continuous operation at 12 V, the resistance of Au@AgNWs TCF only increases by 1.4 times after 18 h, whereas the uncoated AgNWs TCF fails after just 30 min. DFT calculations on the Ag (100)/Au (111) interface confirm the structural stability with a strong adhesion of 1.49 J m −2 and a low interfacial energy of 0.047 J m −2 . Differential charge density and DOS reveal significant charge transfer and the formation of an interfacial dipole field to strengthen interfacial bonding and suppress electromigration. CI-NEB calculations show that the Au layer significantly increases the migration barriers for Ag atoms, suppressing migration and enhancing the stability of the interface.
