Defect controlling of BaTiO3@ NiO double hysteresis loop ceramics with enhanced energy storage capability and stability

Hongye Wang,Rui Huang,Cheng Tao,Hua Hao,Zhonghua Yao,Hanxing Liu,Minghe Cao

Dielectric capacitor with high energy storage density has become a pivotally enabling technology in electronic industry. The most critical factors affecting energy storage capacity are polarization and breakdown strength . Here the BaTiO 3 @ NiO double-hysteresis-loop ceramics with different polarization characteristics are prepared by changing the sintering atmosphere to control the defect structure . Results show that, the samples sintered in oxygen exhibit the obviously characteristics of double hysteresis loop, higher polarization and larger breakdown strength . In contrast, the samples sintered in nitrogen have lower polarization and breakdown strength and weaker double hysteresis loop. It is proved that the double hysteresis loop is caused by the defects of the inner layer and the outer layer by regulating the defect structure . Firstly, Low valence Ni ions replace Ti ions to form N i Ti '' − V o • • NiTi''−Vo•• defect dipoles. These charged defect dipoles could be pinned the domain wall, and the existence of oxygen vacancies restricts the movement of the domain wall, making the material appeared a pinched hysteresis loop similar to the double hysteresis loop as observed in antiferroelectrics. Secondly, the local electric field generated by the depletion layer at the interface may also trigger a new polarization features in the material. This double hysteresis loop helps to improve the polarization and energy storage capacity of the material. Finally, the excellent energy storage density of the oxygen samples reaches up to 2.48 J cm −3 at 340 kV cm -1 with prominent cycle stability and temperature stability. This work provides a prospective method to fabricate material with high energy storage performance by the adjustment defect structure to control the polarization mechanism in the BaTiO 3 @1NiO ceramics.

Bi-Induced Structural Distortion Triggers Polarization Reinforcement and Enhanced Catalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B over BaTiO3

Hanxun Qin,Wenxuan Cao,Faqi Zhan,Qiong Liu,Jiagang Wu

Bi-induced structural distortion was strategically engineered in BaTiO3 nanowires (BT NWs) to reinforce spontaneous polarization and achieve superior piezo-photocatalytic performance for efficient dye degradation. Bi-doped BT NWs (BT_xBi NWs) were synthesized via a facile two-step hydrothermal method. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that Bi3+ substitution at the A-site induces significant lattice contraction, surface cracks, polycrystalline characteristics, and an increased tetragonal phase fraction. These structural distortions, together with an enhanced carrier concentration and optimized electronic structure, markedly improve ferroelectric polarization, charge separation efficiency, and piezoelectric response under mechanical stress. Under ultrasonic-light synergistic conditions, the optimal BT_0.04Bi NWs exhibited an exceptional Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate constant of 487.3 × 10-3 min-1, which surpassed most reported piezo-photocatalysts. Reactive species trapping, electrochemical measurements, KPFM, DFT calculations, and COMSOL simulations collectively confirm that Bi doping breaks local symmetry, introduces additional polarization components, redistributes charge density, and amplifies local piezoelectric potential at crack sites. This work provides a novel and effective doping strategy for simultaneously modulating polarization and electronic properties in ferroelectric perovskites, offering new insights into the design of high-performance piezo-photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Enhanced piezoelectric catalysis of BaTiO3 by ZVAl for mechanochemical defluorination of PFOA: Promotion of electron transfer

Ruoning Guo,Li Li,Zhiwei Zhao,Sai Zhang

Mechanochemical (MC) destruction of pollutants is effective; however, the emerging electron transfer mechanism is ambiguous owing to a lack of systematic evaluation. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the contribution of electrons to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) defluorination during MC process. A synergistic effect was obtained by activating BaTiO 3 to generate piezoelectrons and applying zero-valence aluminum (ZVAl) to facilitate electron transfer, with 95.66% PFOA defluorination and reaction time decreasing from 6 h to 3 h. The mechanism of piezoelectric catalysis of the BaTiO 3 /ZVAl system was further investigated through kinetic analyses and intersystem comparisons. The major contribution of piezo-excited electrons was revealed through probe detection and quantitative determination. A positive correlation between electron generation and PFOA defluorination was ascertained, and the calculation of the electron utilization ratio revealed an electron transfer mechanism. The detached fluorides were confirmed to be bonded directly to the additives. Furthermore, PFOA decomposition was identified as a cyclical process with constant dissociation of the CF 2 groups.

Daily sonic toothbrush triggered biocompatible BaTiO3/chitosan multiporous coating with enhanced piezocatalysis for intraoral antibacterial activity

Yonghan Wei,Xiao Hu,Jun Shao,Shuangying Wang,Yusen Zhang,Wen-Zhong Xie,Yu-Xiang Wu,Xian-Tao Zeng,Ling-Ling Zhang

Pure titanium and its alloys are widely used in dental implants because of their excellent physical chemistry and biocompatibility properties, but their negligible antibacterial activity may lead to bacterial infection and implants failure. Inspired by the piezoelectricity and porous structure of living bone, a multiporous piezo-coating with barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BTO) nanoparticles embedded in chitosan film is modified on acid-etched pure titanium. The surface of coating shows antibacterial effects and can be further improved under daily sonic toothbrush stimulation with an antibacterial rate of 90.41%. Interestingly, the planktonic bacteria around this coating also have low proliferation. The antibacterial mechanism may be BTO-mediated intracellular and extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). On the one hand, the contact potential difference (CPD) caused by the spontaneous polarization of BTO nanoparticles may destroy the intracellular electron transfer and lead to ROS burst. On the other hand, BTO could transfer mechanical energy to electrical energy under the stimulation of sonic toothbrushing (ST), then driving piezocatalytic effect to generate extracellular ROS. In addition, the piezo-coating also exhibits excellent biocompatibility to MC3T3-E1 cells, and promotes more hydroxyapatite deposition and plasma albumin adhesion. In summary, during the stimulation of daily sonic toothbrush, the bioinspired piezo-coating can effectively inhibit the formation of bacterial biofilm, which is a promising strategy to prevent dental implants infection in daily life.

Ultra-high d31 anti-chiral negative Poisson’s ratio BaTiO3 ceramics fabricated by vat photopolymerization 3D printing

Yinghong Sun,Xichen Du,Haihua Yao,Jimin Chen,Yong Zeng

In this study, the anti-chiral negative Poisson's ratio structure BaTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics were fabricated by vat photopolymerization 3D printing technology, which obtained an ultra-high transverse piezoelectric coefficient d 31 . Here, we performed uniaxial compressive load simulations and electric field-driven lattice in-plane strain response simulations, which showed an in-plane negative Poisson's ratio of −1 for the BaTiO 3 ceramics. Its strain amplification is about 10 times that of BaTiO 3 bulk material. Using the principle of positive and negative piezoelectric effects, we measured effective transverse piezoelectric coefficients d 31 for different dimensional parameters. The effective transverse piezoelectric coefficient d 31 with a maximum of 599 pm/V was detected at a ligament aspect ratio of 3.6 for the negative Poisson's ratio BaTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics , which is 7.7 times higher than that of the bulk material. For the prepared hydrophone, test results show that the effective hydrostatic strain constant d h and Hydrostatic Figure of Merit (HFOM) of BaTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics with a negative Poisson's ratio structure are 29.6 and 808 times higher than those of bulk BaTiO 3 .

Achieving improved electrocaloric effect and broad operation temperature by tailoring phase fraction in BaTiO3-based ceramics

Silin Tang,Yingzhi Meng,Yongqing Cai,Biaolin Peng,Laijun Liu,Qingqing Ke

Ferroelectric electrocaloric (EC) materials are a pivotal part of sustainable micro-cooling, which complements conventional cooling methods in miniaturized devices. However, the application of EC materials is largely limited by the unsatisfactory room-temperature EC response and narrow operation temperature window. In this work, with careful tuning the composition of BaTiO 3 (BT)-based ceramics through the conventional doping method, enhanced EC properties were achieved in Ba 0.8 Sr 0.2 Zr x (Ti 0.999 Mn 0.001 ) 1- x O 3 (BSZMT) ( x  = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20). We especially found that the electrocaloric temperature change ( ΔT ) of > 0.50 K was achieved in a broaden temperature ranging from 20 °C to 95 °C and a peak ΔT value of 1.08 K was achieved at temperature of 70 °C in our BSZMT with x  = 0.15. To ascertain the physical mechanism, we employed hybrid characterization methods including XRD , Raman, and dielectric analysis together with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation. Our results clearly show that the doped Zr and Mn at B site of BSZMT effectively modulate the microstructure leading to coexistence of different ferroelectric phases and broken long-range ferroelectric order, which subsequently results in the enhanced EC performance and broad operating temperature window.

Dynamic Regulation of Lithium Dendrite Growth with Electromechanical Coupling Effect of Soft BaTiO3 Ceramic Nanofiber Films

Shuhui Xia,Yun Zhao,Jianhua Yan,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) offer great opportunity for developing high-energy density energy-storage-systems, but the anodes suffer a severe problem of dendrite growth that hinders the practical applications of LMBs. Here, we report a soft BaTiO3 ceramic nanofiber film with excellent ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity that enables one to transverse the dense deposition of Li metal. During Li plating, the strong ferroelectricity reduces the Li-ion concentration gradient near the anode and thus facilitating their uniform deposition. Once squeezed by these Li deposits, the BaTiO3 film generates instantaneous piezo-effect to dynamically change the subsequent Li deposition from vertical to lateral. As a result, Li–Cu cells exhibit reversible plating–stripping processes for over 200 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency of >98.3%. When pairing with high-voltage LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathodes, the LMBs can retain >80% capacity in 300 cycles without forming dendrites even under challenging conditions including a high cathode loading of 7.2 mg/cm2, a lean electrolyte amount of 7 μL/mg, and high current rates. The findings point to a promising electromechanical coupling strategy to dynamically adjust dendrite growth for designing Li metal anodes.

Excellent energy storage density and efficiency in lead-free Sm-doped BaTiO3–Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 ceramics

Zhi-Gang Liu,Zhen-Hua Tang,Song-Cheng Hu,Di-Jie Yao,Fei Sun,De-Yang Chen,Xiao-Bin Guo,Qiu-Xiang Liu,Yan-Ping Jiang,Xin-Gui Tang

Progress in energy storage ceramics for applications has been of interest owing to their clean green nature and excellent ferroelectric/dielectric performances. In this study, lead-free Sm-doped 0.95BaTiO3–0.05Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 (BT–BMT–xSm) relaxor ferroelectric ceramics were synthesized and confirmed to be an appropriate material for storage devices. After the introduction of Sm2O3 into BT–BMT ceramics, their hysteresis loops gradually shrank and became slender, which is beneficial to achieving high efficiency energy storage in ceramic capacitors. The maximum recoverable energy density for the BT–BMT–xSm (x = 0.03) sample reached 3.86 J cm−3 at normal temperature, and its corresponding energy efficiency reached 81.6%. Moreover, it was found from impedance spectroscopy that the breakdown field strength is related to the oxygen defect content in the samples. Ceramic samples with fewer defects have better insulation performance, which means that a high breakdown field strength will be obtained. With proper doping, enhanced relaxor behaviour and breakdown field strength were obtained to achieve excellent energy storage properties.

Gradient dielectric constant sandwich-structured BaTiO3/PMMA nanocomposites with strengthened energy density and ultralow-energy loss

Yujiu Zhou,Qingxia Liu,Fujia Chen,Xiali Li,Song Sun,Jimin Guo,Yuetao Zhao,Yajie Yang,Jianhua Xu

High energy storage density with low-energy loss polymer films are essential for high-performance electric devices. To avoid the high-energy loss of utilizing nonlinear polymer materials, a sandwich nanostructure comprising a linear polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix embedded with a high dielectric constant BaTiO 3 (BT) interlayer and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder was constructed using a solution casting strategy. This structural design takes advantage of each component in the composite. The good dispersion of BT particles in the binder, which was incorporated between PMMA, enabled a high dielectric constant and fewer defects. Additionally, the excellent film formation ability of the PVDF binder guarantees the uniform thickness and stable structure of the BT mid-layer, and good miscibility between PVDF and PMMA enhanced the interaction between each layer. Interestingly, since the dielectric constant of PVDF was between BT fillers and PMMA, a dielectric gradient distribution mitigated the local electric field concentration, as proven by the simulation results. Consequently, a low-loss linear PMMA composite film exhibited satisfying breakdown strength and excellent discharged energy density , which were 25% and 460% higher than those of pristine PMMA, respectively.

Significantly enhanced dielectric permittivity and low loss in epoxy composites incorporating 3d W-WO3/BaTiO3 foams

Zhang Wenqiang,Zhu Xiaotong,Liang Liang,Yin Peng,Xie Peitao,Dastan Davoud,Sun Kai,Fan Runhua,Shi Zhicheng

With the rapid development of miniaturization and high integration of electronic devices, increasing attention has been paid to the exploration of dielectric composites with further improved dielectric permittivities. Herein, a unique design of high dielectric permittivity composites consisting of three-dimensional porous W-WO 3 /BaTiO 3 foams hosted in epoxy matrix is proposed. It is demonstrated that the introduction of W-WO 3 /BaTiO 3 foams into the epoxy matrix results in substantially improved dielectric permittivities in comparison with the epoxy matrix. Meanwhile, low loss which is comparable to that of the epoxy matrix is well maintained. Interestingly, obviously enhanced dielectric permittivities and greatly depressed loss are concurrently achieved via increasing the oxidation temperature. In particular, the composite with 53.1 wt% W-WO 3 /BaTiO 3 foam oxidized at 1300 °C exhibits a high dielectric permittivity of ~ 536 and a low loss tangent of ~ 0.05@10 kHz which are about 149 and 1.5 times those of the epoxy matrix, respectively. It is believed that the strong interfacial polarization and the numerous equivalent micro-capacitors result in the significantly improved dielectric permittivities. The finite element simulation results reveal that the formation of the WO 3 shell on the surface of W can effectively weaken the leakage current density, yielding the sharply depressed loss. This work provides a new strategy to design polymer composites with simultaneous high dielectric permittivity and low loss, and the strategy could also be applicable to the exploration of other high-performance dielectric composites.

One-step synthesis of unique thorn-like BaTiO3–TiO2 composite nanofibers to enhance piezo-photocatalysis performance

Zhaowei Liu,Kang Zhao,Guoxin Xing,Wanxing Zheng,Yufei Tang

Piezo-photocatalysis materials that can effectively utilize mechanical energy of water flow have become one of the research focuses in the field of water pollutant treatment. Herein, the unique thorn-like BaTiO 3 –TiO 2 composite nanofibers were prepared in one step by coaxial electrospinning. The surface TiO 2 nanorods and the core BaTiO 3 nanofiber presented a certain angle when the advancing speed ratio of the shell and core solution was 2:1. The TiO 2 nanorods were tightly bonded to the nanofiber and the thorn-like protrusions on the fiber surface were sensitive to water flow. The BaTiO 3 –TiO 2 composite nanofibers exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance and recyclability with the bandgap value of 3.12 eV. The photocatalytic degradation rate of BaTiO 3 –TiO 2 composite nanofibers was 99.8% under the vibration of tiny water current, while the degradation rate was just 56.1% without vibration. Scavenger study result indicated that superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals were the main factors to improve the photodegradation activity of the samples. After five cycles, the degradation rate still reached 98.6%. The obtained thorn-like BaTiO 3 –TiO 2 composite nanofibers can effectively utilize the tiny water vibration energy and have broad application prospects in the field of water treatment. Most importantly, the method of synthesizing a unique thorn-like structure is universal.

Enhanced compressive strengths and induced cell growth of 1-3-type BaTiO3/PMMA bio-piezoelectric composites

Yufei Tang,Lei Chen,Zihao Duan,Kang Zhao,Zixiang Wu

Barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) has been used as a bone implant material because of its piezoelectric properties and the ability to promote cell growth when combined with hydroxyapatite. However, the brittleness of BaTiO 3 inhibits its use as a bone replacement material at load-bearing sites, and the reduction of BaTiO 3 content in the composite reduces its piezoelectric effect on bone growth. In this study, we explored a preparation method, which included directional freeze casting and self-solidification of bone cement, to obtain 1-3-type BaTiO 3 /PMMA bio-piezoelectric composites with a lamellar structure. The lamellar BaTiO 3 layer through the composite from the bottom to the top significantly improved the piezoelectric properties of the composite. In addition, the dendritic ceramic bridges on the BaTiO 3 pore walls can improve the compressive strength and elastic modulus of BaTiO 3 /PMMA bio-piezoelectric composites with a lamellar structure. More importantly, it was found that polarized lamellar BaTiO 3 could induce osteoblasts to grow in the direction of the BaTiO 3 layers. When the width of the BaTiO 3 layer was in the range of 8–21 μm, osteoblasts along the BaTiO 3 layer showed well growth, which can be of great value for the production of biomimetic bone units.
