To remove endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), visible-light response photocatalyst BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /perylene diimide (PDI) with bi-heterojunction was constructed. Under visible-light irradiation, BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /PDI could degrade 90% Bisphenol A (BPA) within 75 min, while degrade 100% 17α-ethynyl estradiol (EE2) and 17β-estradiol (E2) within 15 min. Radicals quenching experiment and EPR indicated both •O 2 – and holes were the main substances for EDCs degradation, and the possible degradation pathway of EDCs are proposed based on the LC-MS analysis results. In the composite of BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /PDI, the matching energy band structure between Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 and BiOBr facilitated the formation of heterojunction for strengthening the space charge separation. Meanwhile, PDI with strong photosensitivity combined with BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 not only enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity but also broadened the light-harvesting range. Owning to the unique one-dimensional conjugated structure and internal electric field effect, PDI could also promote the photo-carriers transfer and separation. With the bi-heterojunction effect, photo-generated electrons were transferred to BiOBr conduction band while holes were accumulated on PDI valence band. Simultaneously, holes could oxidize water with the production of oxygen following being reduced to •O 2 – by photo-generated electrons. Even under oxygen-poor conditions, the production of •O 2 – can reach 32.7 × 10 -5 mol•g −1 •h −1 , resulting in more than 85% BPA degradation within 75 min.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a major transmitter of redox signals during chemical processes. Cost-effective and easy-to-operate sensors for H 2 O 2 are in high demand in a variety of fields. A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for H 2 O 2 detection was investigated, using BiOBr/TiO 2 NAs/FTO (BiOBr/TNAs) as a PEC electrode which is obtained by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. This non-enzymatic PEC BiOBr/TNAs electrode shows excellent selectivity, stability, and reproducibility for H 2 O 2 detection in optimizing modes. The linear relationship is in a broad range from 4 to 1800 μM (R 2 = 0.994) and a detection limit of 0.65 μM (S/N = 3). In the detection of H 2 O 2 in apple juice and milk real samples, the BiOBr/TNAs show outstanding recovery ranging from 98.0 % to 102.0 %, indicating great potential in practical applications. Meanwhile, the p-n heterojunction formed between BiOBr and TiO 2 improves the utilization of visible light and effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. This work provides a new strategy for the non-enzymatic detection of hydrogen peroxide in PEC mode.

An interesting photocatalytic memory effect was found in 2D ultrathin BiOBr nanosheets, which endowed them the capability to trap photogenerated electrons on Bi 3+ and Br - in this material system for an extended period of time and resulted in the creation of stable oxygen vacancies (Ov) by just visible light irradiation due to the charge balance requirement. Thus, a broader visible light absorption, more negative conduction band minimum, stronger piezoelectric response, better charge carrier separation and transfer, and enhanced CO 2 adsorption and activation were occurred in these BiOBr nanosheets with prior visible light irradiation, all of which were beneficial for their enhanced CO 2 reduction performances in photocatalysis, piezocatalysis, and photopiezocatalysis, respectively, than their counterparts without it. This work demonstrated a novel approach to create oxygen vacancies by light irradiation through the photocatalytic memory effect, which could be readily applied to similar photocatalyst systems to boost their performances and generate novel functionalities.

Semiconductor photocatalyst as a new type of green and sustainable energy material has extensively used in wastewater and gas treatment. In this work, we prepared Pt/h-BN/BiOBr composite by an alcohol-soluble hydrolysis-assisted photoreduction method. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of bisphenol A under simulated sunlight, and the degradation efficiency of BiOBr, h-BN/BiOBr, Pt/BiOBr, and Pt/h-BN/BiOBr were 55.13%, 74.91%, 89.00%, and 98.54%, respectively. The results showed single composited with h-BN or Pt could improve the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr, while double composited with h-BN and Pt could play a synergistic effect on further improving the activity. The interaction between h-BN and BiOBr was electrostatic interactions, and that Pt as a plasma metal was coupling with BiOBr due to its localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. The composition, morphology, optical property, and separation efficiency of photo-induced carriers and dominant active radicals were investigated. Based on the results, a possible mechanism was proposed. The excellent photocatalytic activity of Pt/h-BN/BiOBr composite photocatalyst could be attributed to the broadened light-response range after Pt loading, and enhanced electron–hole separation efficiency due to the electron capturer role of Pt and the hole transfer function of h-BN.

Novel visible-light-driven CoFe 2 O 4 –rGO–BiOBr magnetic composites were successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared nanomaterial was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–visible diffuse reflectance (UV–vis DRS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The photocatalytic degradation experiments indicate that 0.3 CoFe 2 O 4 –rGO–BiOBr had the best photocatalytic activity. The results of PL, EIS and free radical trap experiments demonstrate the improvement of photocatalytic performance of composite materials due to the formation of heterojunction between CoFe 2 O 4 and BiOBr, the introduced GO accelerates electron conduction and effectively separates photogenerated electrons and holes. Additionally, the cyclic test and magnetic separation properties show that the CoFe 2 O 4 –rGO–BiOBr hybrid materials have the stable degradation ability during the photodegradation process. The unique heterojunction photocatalytic material is promising for the practical applications in remove organic pollutants to manage the environment.

In the present study, a novel visible-light Z-scheme photocatalyst based on BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 /graphene ternary structure was prepared through a hydrothermal approach. The morphology and structure of the prepared photocatalyst were characterized, and the optical properties of the photocatalyst were investigated as well. Afterwards, the photocatalytic performance of the Z-scheme photocatalyst were evaluated through degrading rhodamine B dye and reducing Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation. Compared with pure BiOBr and BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 binary composites, the prepared BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 /graphene ternary exhibited higher photo-degradation and photo-reduction efficiency. It was also found that the holes were the main active species which were generated during the photocatalysis process. Due to the existence of conductive graphene, the photo-generated active species could be effectively stabilized and quickly transferred. Moreover, the prepared photocatalyst showed very promising recyclable stability, in which the photocatalytic performance of the composites barely decreased after five consecutive circles. The present study provides a new insight in designing and constructing high-efficient and recyclable photocatalyst for aqueous pollutant removal.

The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -BiOBr (FSB) magnetic composite was prepared and introduced into the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system as a heterogeneous Fenton-like photocatalyst for synergistic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The FSB was characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Characterization results demonstrated that BiOBr was successfully coated on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 , forming FSB, and it exhibited good UV & visible response. The presence of FSB accelerated PFOA degradation: PFOA removal efficiency and total organic carbon removal from DBD-FSB system increased from 73.5% to 92.9% and 28.9% to 62.5%, respectively, within 60 min under reaction conditions of 20 mg L −1 PFOA, initial pH 4.28, 100 mg L −1 FSB and 22 kV peak voltage, as compared with DBD system. Accordingly, defluorination efficiency of PFOA and energy efficiency increased from 21% to 32.8% and 46.39 mg kW −1 h −1 to 72.47 mg kW −1 h −1 , respectively. The synergetic mechanism was attributed to the combination of active species such as OH, H 2 O 2 , O 3 , directly generated from the DBD plasma and a great amount of OH generated from Fenton-like reaction initiated by FSB photocatalyst under light irradiation emitted during discharge. The OH and photogenerated holes played essential roles in the mineralization process. Based on the identified intermediates, possible degradation pathways of PFOA in DBD-FSB system were proposed, and PFOA degradation mainly occurred via the pathway of perfluoroalkyl radical pathway.

CO 2 reduction by a sustainable pathway such as photothermal catalysis is highly demanded currently, high carrier recombination rate still severely limits the performance of photothermal catalysis. Constructing heterojunction interfaces with high exposed area is an effective strategy to solve the problem of carrier recombination. However, fine control of the interface structure is still highly challenging. Herein, Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were constructed to reveal that metallic Bi leads to more densities of states (DOS) generation at the conduction band edge in Bi-BiOBr, which argues that photogenerated electrons are more likely to be delivered to metallic Bi. A TiO 2 @Bi-BiOBr hollow hierarchical core–shell heterojunction was designed, providing a highly exposed interface and Bi between interfaces. Such structure endows the catalyst with excellent photothermal catalytic performance, achieving a CO yield of 30.4 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 . The highly improved performance is attributed to interfacial thermoelectrons transfer boosted by the construction of TiO 2 @BiOBr heterojunction as well as metal Bi. And a possible CO 2 reduction pathway is proposed, which is consistent with the Carbine pathway. This study provides an exciting idea for the modulation of photoelectron transfer at catalyst interfaces.

A nitrogen-deficient g-C 3 N 4 -BiOBr-Bi 2 WO 6 /PVDF composite ultrafiltration membrane with high-efficiency retention and degradation capabilities for various dyes and antibiotics was prepared using a simple in situ deposition combined with phase inversion method. Under normal pressure, the membrane achieved a retention rate of over 95 % for multiple dyes, featured numerous hydrophilic sites, and demonstrated an average pollutant flux of 147.6L·m −2 ·h −1 . In a simulated visible solar light flow-circulation device, the composite membrane exhibited excellent efficiency and final degradation performance, achieving a degradation rate of 97.7 % for RhB within 1 h and a final degradation rate of 99.6 %. DFT calculations provided evidence for the potential distribution and interaction forces between nanoparticles and PVDF molecules, supporting the observed results. The in situ synthesized BiOBr nanomaterials grow and embed within the membrane, forming heterojunctions with an internal electric field alongside other materials. The incorporation of heterojunction materials improves the surface and internal physical structure of the PVDF membrane, endowing it with excellent photocatalytic degradation performance, enhanced hydrophilicity, and improved retention capabilities. Additionally, the composite membrane exhibits outstanding self-cleaning properties. This work provides a broad-spectrum and efficient solution for water pollution treatment.

Conventional photocatalytic CO2 reduction is usually combined with the oxidation of H2O or sacrificial agents, which faces problems such as low catalytic activity and inefficient atom economy. In this work, a photocatalytic CO2 reduction and selective styrene oxidation synergetic system is developed with an NH4Cl-modified g-C3N4/BiOBr composite photocatalyst. The interfacial heterostructure promotes the formation of surface amino groups and oxygen vacancies, which facilitates the adsorption and chemical reduction of CO2. The heterostructure also improves the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and enhances the photocatalytic activity. The simultaneous consumption of electrons and holes is beneficial for both CO2 reduction and styrene oxidation processes. Meanwhile, the oxygen atoms removed during CO2 reduction are utilized efficiently for styrene oxidation in this synergistic system, and thus the atom economy is improved significantly. The generation rates of CO, CH4, benzaldehyde and styrene oxide are 802, 8, 684 and 139 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively. This study provides a novel strategy for designing a green photocatalytic CO2 reduction system.

Cow’s milk allergy is a prevalent food allergy, with β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) identified as one of the major allergenic proteins in cow’s milk. The accurate detection of β-Lg is crucial for reducing the risk of allergic reactions. In this study, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was developed for the detection of β-Lg in milk, utilizing an In 2 O 3 /BiOBr heterojunction composite material. Sensitization of the heterojunction with Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) enhanced the photosensitivity, leading to a significant increase in photocurrent response. The In 2 O 3 /BiOBr heterojunction improved solar energy utilization and enhanced light absorption across the visible spectrum. The photocurrent signal intensity decreased proportionally with increasing β-Lg concentration due to the specific binding with the aptamer. Under optimized experimental conditions, the PEC aptasensor exhibited a wide linear detection range from 0.001 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL and achieved a detection limit of 2.31 pg/mL. The sensor proved excellent selectivity, stability, reproducibility, and a broad linear range, offering a promising method for β-Lg detection in real milk samples.

A multifunctional, multiphase-supported photocatalyst was fabricated via the combination of LCD three-dimensional (3D) printing, cold plasma discharge (CPD) technology, and surface chemistry to be used for the degradation of organic pollutants in water and for the generation of hydrogen gas. BiOBr was chosen as the main catalytic phase and was used in association with a phosphor, SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ (SAED), and a metal–organic framework, Ni-BDC. Their immobilization was realized thanks to polydopamine (PDA), which is used as a coupling agent. While BiOBr was the most active photocatalytic phase, the phosphor acted as a light-storing component for photodegradation in the dark and overall, as a boost for photoactivity. PDA also boosted the photoactivity, in parallel with its crucial role in the immobilization of the SAED/Ni-MOF/BiOBr catalyst on fractal polymer support. An in situ complexation-assisted precipitation (ISCAP) process was used, allowing the formation of the catalytic phases with nano features. The resulting hybrid photocatalysts were tested through rhodamine B (RhB) dye photodegradation upon visible light irradiation or light/dark alternating conditions to simulate more realistic variable light illumination. We found that, although used in a very small amount, the Ni-MOF had a significant impact on the photoactivity, forming a Z-scheme heterojunction with BiOBr. Finally, H2 evolution testing further established the photocatalytic activity and versatility of the supported catalysts.
