BiOCl hierarchical microspheres assembled from nanosheets with exposed {001} facets were successfully synthesized using PEG-2000 as template by a one-pot room-temperature hydrolysis method. The PEG-modified BiOCl photocatalyst exhibits a significantly enhanced RhB photosensitized degradation activity under visible light. After 10 min white LED irradiation, the degradation efficiency of RhB by the PEG-modified BiOCl sample S0.07 reaches 99.5%. The degradation rate constant of the PEG-modified sample S0.07 over RhB is 0.4568 min−1, which is 6.76 times that of the unmodified sample S0 (0.0676 min−1). After 4 min of xenon lamp (λ ≥ 420 nm) irradiation, the degradation rate of RhB by S0.07 is almost 100%. The exposed {001} facets with surface defects contribute to the superior adsorption capacity of BiOCl towards RhB, which immensely accelerates the electron transfer efficiency from the excited RhB into the conduction band of BiOCl, forming superoxide radical (˙O2−) active species to degrade the pollutants. Moreover, the superior RhB-sensitized BiOCl system provides high photocatalytic degradation activity over MO. This work provides a facile and efficient BiOCl synthesis method that is conducive to large-scale production and simultaneously opens up new ideas for the synthesis of other photocatalysts.

Magnetically separatable CoFe 2 O 4 /BiOCl (CFO/BOC) fibers were facilely prepared by solvothermal growth of BiOCl on hollow electrospun CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers in a weak reduction ethylene glycol (EG) solvent for visible light photocatalytic degradation of various contaminants. Due to the defect level resulted from the oxygen vacancies (OVs), evident visible light response and enhanced charge transfer are achieved both for the solo BiOCl spheres and nanosheets on the CoFe 2 O 4 fibrous support. The optimum CFO/BOC synthesized at 160 °C with a precursor concentration of 50 mM shows outstanding photocatalytic activity to degrade different pollutants of Rhodamine B (RhB, 92.9%), Norfloxacin (NOR, 75.5%), and Cr(VI) (78.0%) within 2 h under visible light. The CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers are not pivotal for the photocatalytic process, but mainly contribute to the photocatalysis as magnetic support, ensuring the CFO/BOC no aggregation and easy collection under an external magnet. In contrast, the OVs play an important role in the visible light absorption , reactive oxygen species generation and redox process during the photocatalytic process. In detail, both photosensitization of RhB and species of h + and·O 2 - contribute to the degradation of RhB, while NOR decomposition is accomplished by three species (h + ,·O 2 - ,·OH). In addition, electrons are the main reactive species for the photoreduction of Cr(VI). Compared to current reported CoFe 2 O 4 /BiOI photocatalysts , significant advances for the CFO/BOC are obtained not only for the cheap BiOCl with OVs for the photocatalytic application, but also much clearer investigation of more details of CFO/BOC photocatalysts such as light absorption, charge transfer and active species for the degradation of various pollutants.

S-scheme heterojunction structure can endow the photocatalysts with high-performance photo-degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) since it can remain the photogenerated electrons/holes with stronger redox ability. Herein, an integrative S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst building from Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S nanoparticles and BiOCl microflowers with oxygen vacancies (OVs) was developed. Moreover, the in-situ grown process ensures the firm contact and intense electron coupling between BiOCl and Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S. As a result, Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl exhibited a significant reinforcement of photo-activity and stability for the abatement of antibiotic norfloxacin, manifesting a 2.8-fold or 9.6-fold enhancement compared to pristine Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S or BiOCl. Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl also shows good resistance to alkaline, sodium salts and humic acid. The performance of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl to photocatalytically degrade other PPCPs with different molecular structures was further confirmed. At last, the ability of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl for PPCPs de-toxicity was verified by evaluating the toxicity of norfloxacin and its degradation intermediate. This study demonstrates a new S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyt for efficient removal of PPCPs as well as provides some insights into developing high-performance metal sulfide solid-solution-based S-scheme heterojunctions for water decontamination.

The development of non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is vital for promising clean energy technologies such as fuel cells, and zinc-air batteries. Herein, we present a stepwise synthesis of N -doped and carbon encapsulated BiOCl-CNTs heterostructures. Electrocatalytic ORR studies show that the optimized catalyst has a high half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.85 V (vs. RHE), large limiting current density (-5.34 mA cm −2 @0.6 V) in alkaline medium, and nearly perfect 4 e − reduction characteristics, even surpassing commercial Pt/C. Meanwhile, the catalyst has exceptional durability (above 97.5 % after 40000 s) and strong resistance towards methanol poisoning. The good ORR activity also results in high-performance zinc-air batteries with a specific capacity (724 mAh g −1 @10 mA cm −2 ), a high open-circuit potential of 1.51 V and a peak power density of 170.7 mW cm −2 , as well as an ultra-long charge–discharge cycle stability (155 h), comparable with the Pt/C catalyst. The catalytic mechanism reveals that the excellent electrocatalytic performance originates from the synergistic effect of N doping, oxygen vacancies, and BiOCl sites.

Heterojunction engineering is an effective strategy to enhance the photodegradation activity via improving the spatial charge separation. However, the poor interface interactions and stability limit the photocatalytic activity and stability of traditional heterojunctions. Herein, robust BiOCl/ZnO p–n heterojunctions with semi-coherent interfaces were prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method to improve the activity and stability toward photocatalytic degradation than that of the counterpart, in which the semi-coherent interfaces exhibited lower phase boundary energy, resulting in highly-stable interfaces between BiOCl and ZnO as well as the formation of the built-in electric field in this robust p–n heterojunction for enhanced charge separation. The cycle test results verified that the BiOCl/ZnO heterojunctions with semi-coherent interfaces can maintain the photocatalytic degradation activity at the initial level even after 10 cycles, while deactivation of the sample without semi-coherent interfaces occurred after 3 cycles only. Optical and electrical properties revealed that BiOCl/ZnO heterojunctions with semi-coherent interfaces possessed the highest electron migration and charge separation efficiency, resulting in the highest photodegradation activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electron spin-resonance (ESR) results verified that the enhanced charge separation was assigned to the type-II photocatalytic mechanism, leading to the enhancement of ˙OH and ˙O2− reactive oxygen species. This work would provoke the development of one-step construction of new highly active BiOX (X = Cl, Br, and I)-based heterogeneous photocatalysts with stable semi-coherent interfaces.

UVC (wavelength < 280 nm) has a wide range of applications in the field of water disinfection due to its excellent bactericidal performance. In this work, we synthesized an upconversion luminescent material, β-NaYF 4 : Pr 3+ , Li + (NYF), which can generate UVC, and compounded it with a BiOCl photocatalyst to synthesize β-NaYF 4 : Pr 3+ , Li + @BiOCl (NYF-Bi) with a core-shell structure. The NYF-Bi composite material can be driven under visible light and has high photocatalytic activity . The bactericidal performance of NYF and NYF-Bi were evaluated using Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , Shigella and Salmonella . The NYF-Bi composite material killed 99.99% of E. coli under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm) within 180 min and maintained high germicidal efficacy after 4 cycles. Finally, we deduced the sterilization mechanism of the NYF-Bi composite material through carrier dynamics studies and catching agent experiments. The death of bacteria was mainly caused by UVC light and active species , including h + , OH, and O- 2. This research provides a new material for water disinfection.

A facile and fast method was developed for the preparation of novel BiOCl/Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 heterojunctions via a self-combustion of ionic liquids (ILs) route. The ILs were prepared from Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O and diethylamine hydrochloride ((C 2 H 5 ) 2 NH·HCl). The photocatalysts were obtained by heating the ILs to combustion. In the ILs system, (C 2 H 5 ) 2 NH·HCl serves not only as the source of cation in IL, but also as the main fuel. The prepared composites exhibit noticeable visible light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of organic pollutants, including anionic dye methyl orange and cationic dye rhodamine B, which is attributed to the narrow band gap (2.3 eV) and the effective electrons transfer from the conductive band of Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 to that of BiOCl, improving the separation efficiency of the photo-generated electron/hole pairs. The heterojunction containing 60.4% BiOCl and 39.6% Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity. The heterojunction shows dramatic adsorption performance for cationic dye rhodamine B because of its surface negative charges. The radical scavengers result shows that hole is the main reactive species responsible for the degradation of pollutants and superoxide radials are also involved in the photocatalytic process. The results obtained may provide a new sight for broadening the application of ILs in the preparation of nanomaterials and for the in-situ one-step synthesis of heterostructural materials.

BiOCl and its derivatives show considerable promise for supercapacitor applications because of their high theoretical specific capacity and rich redox activity. However, their practical performance is often limited by poor electrical conductivity and structural instability. To address these issues, we constructed a BiOCl/Bi₂₄O₃₁Cl₁₀ heterojunction to improve both charge transport and structural stability. A flake-like BiOCl precursor was first synthesized and then electrochemically treated at a constant current of 0.02 A over a wide pH range (1−13) to generate a BiOCl/Bi₂₄O₃₁Cl₁₀ heterojunction, denoted as BiOCl-1/24-X. By tuning the pH of the reaction system, pH-dependent formation of a reconstructed Bi₂₄O₃₁Cl₁₀ phase on the BiOCl surface was achieved, thereby strengthening the interfacial interaction between the two phases. This interfacial reconstruction process modulated the extent of heterointerface formation and the concentration of oxygen-vacancy-related defects, thereby promoting ion transport and charge-transfer kinetics. The results indicate that the sample treated at pH = 9 exhibits battery-type energy-storage behavior dominated by diffusion-controlled processes. Accordingly, it delivered a specific capacity of 411C·g −1 at 1·A g −1 , far exceeding that of pristine BiOCl (80C·g −1 ). Moreover, it retained 79.3% of its initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. It also achieved an energy density of 35.67 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 923.83 W·kg −1 . In a practical demonstration, the BiOCl-1/24//AC device powered a 3.2 V LED for 900 s, highlighting its application potential. This work proposes a facile electrochemical interfacial reconstruction strategy for developing high-performance electrode materials, offering a simpler and more effective alternative to conventional chemical methods.

A series of Mg-Al LDH-based photocatalysts were synthesized via a one-pot steam-assisted method, including pure Mg-Al LDH (MA), Zn-In ion-exchange-modified Mg-Al LDH (MAZ), BiOCl-loaded pristine Mg-Al LDH (MAB), and Zn-In-modified Mg-Al LDH co-loaded with TiO2and BiOCl (MA/Zn-In/TiO2/BiOCl, MAZB). The one-pot synthesis facilitated the in situ intercalation and uniform loading of BiOCl/TiO2/Zn-In, while Zn2+/In3+modified the MA layers via ion exchange, leading to an expansion of the interlayer spacing. The innovation of this work is reflected in two aspects: first, all raw materials are added via a one-pot strategy to achieve in situ preparation of modified hydrotalcite; second, this synthetic route features simple post-treatment without complicated washing, pressure filtration, and other tedious operations. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2adsorption–desorption isotherms. The bismuth chloride oxide/TiO2/LDHs exhibited a layered structure, with the active components uniformly distributed between the layers and on the MA surface. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, MAZB achieved 97.5% degradation of 20 mg/L MB within 120 min, with an apparent rate constant of 0.0297 min−1, which is 7.2 times, 2.4 times, and 2.9 times that of MA, MAZ, and MAB, respectively. The degradation rate of MAZB still remained at 89.5% after five cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. Compared with traditional hydrothermal methods, this steam-assisted system features mild reaction conditions (180 °C, atmospheric pressure), sodium-free raw materials, no washing requirement, and zero waste discharge, showing prominent green advantages.

Photocatalytic CO₂ reduction is a promising route for solar fuel production, yet it is often hampered by inefficient charge separation and compromised redox power in conventional heterojunctions. Here, we report a thermal-mediated strategy that intelligently reconfigures the charge transfer pathway in In 2 O 3 /BiOCl heterojunctions from a conventional Type-II to a S-scheme. This transition is driven by the in situ formation of synergistic dual defects—oxygen vacancies and metallic bismuth—enabled by precise solvothermal control. The oxygen vacancies serve as efficient CO 2 adsorption and activation sites, while metallic Bi functions as effective electron bridges. This defect synergy collectively reconstructs the interfacial electronic structure, as directly evidenced by in situ XPS and EPR and confirmed by DFT calculations, which reveal a reversed band alignment conducive to S-scheme charge flow. The resulting S-scheme In 2 O 3 /BBC-Ov heterojunction (InBBC-4) achieves a superior CO production rate of 96.11 μmol g −1 h −1 with 96.7 % selectivity, substantially outperforming its Type-II counterpart. This work offers profound atomic-level insights and establishes a simple thermal-tuning paradigm for designing high-performance photocatalysts through defect-mediated control of charge pathways.

Herein, we have successfully prepared multifunctional nitrogen–boron co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,B-CQDs) with excellent performance by a one-step hydrothermal method and further applied them to the design of highly efficient fluorescent probes and visible light responsive photocatalysts. N,B-CQDs have excellent selectivity and high sensitivity to Fe 3+ and Hg 2+ , with LODs of 1.8 μM and 0.34 μM, respectively. The experimental results show that the fluorescence quenching mechanism of Fe 3+ and Hg 2+ detected by N,S-CQDs is the result of dynamic quenching and static quenching. Besides, BiOCl modified by N,S-CQDs(BiOCl/N,B-CQDs) was prepared by one-step hydrothermal method, and the morphology of catalysts and the adhesion of N,B-CQDs were observed by several scientific methods. The photocatalytic results showed that the degradation rate of RhB by BiOCl/N,B-CQDs was up to 99.4% under optimal conditions, which was higher than that of BiOCl (80%). Free radical quenching experiments proved that ·OH and ·O 2 − were the main active substances in the reaction process. Finally, the aim of this study is to offer a novel approach to developing multi-function CQDs as a sensor for metal ions and their modified composites as visible light-induced photocatalysts for the effective detection and degradation of contaminants.

Solar interface heating evaporators are widely used and have been able to obtain clean water vapor from sewage. However, the soluble contaminants remaining in the original solution were not removed, and the floating organic pollutants affect the steam production rate. In this paper, the superhydrophobic Bi/BiOCl with low surface tension is synthesized and loaded to the felt to construct the floating layer of the photothermal device. The floating layer collaborated with the filter paper hydrophilic layer and the Pyromellitic dianhydride-Tris (4-aminophenyl) amine covalent organic framework (PMDA-TAPA COF) photothermal layer to treat the sewage containing dissolved pollutants, achieving an interfacial evaporation rate of 1.47 kg⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 . Importantly, the floating layer not only has a contact angle of 161°, which can selectively adsorb the organic solvents floating on the water surface, but also can degrade the pollutants dissolved in the water under the light and solving the problems that hinder device applications. The valence band and conduction band potentials of superhydrophobic Bi/BiOCl are at 3.065 eV and −0.435 eV, respectively, which produce h + and O 2 – under light to degrade dissolved pollutants in water. The introduction of novel superhydrophobic Bi/BiOCl photocatalyst in the floating layer provides a reference for solving the problem of pollutant residues.
