Ultrasound-switchable piezoelectric BiVO4/fullerene heterostructure for on-demand ROS modulation in MRSA-infected diabetic wound healing

Zini Huang,Yihan Ma,Xinyi Yang,Xiaoping Yang,Yinjia Cheng,Aiqing Zhang

Persistent microbial infections and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation severely impede diabetic wound healing. Herein, we developed an ultrasound-switchable BiVO 4 /fullerene piezoelectric heterostructure via a one-pot solvothermal method, enabling on-demand transition between bactericidal action and ROS scavenging for treating infected diabetic wounds. Under 8-min ultrasound (US) irradiation, the heterojunction sonosensitizer leveraged piezoelectric polarization to generate substantial ROS in real-time through a narrowed energy band gap and enhanced charge carrier separation and migration efficiency, resulting in the disruption of bacterial membrane integrity and 99.9 % eradication of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Upon US withdrawal, the sonosensitizer spontaneously transitioned to an antioxidative state through fullerene-mediated ROS scavenging, effectively neutralizing excess ROS and restoring cellular redox balance. In an MRSA-infected diabetic wound model, this ultrasound-responsive duality effectively suppressed bacterial proliferation, reduced inflammation, enhanced angiogenesis, and ultimately accelerated wound healing within 14 days. This ultrasound-switchable therapeutic strategy offers promising insights for managing drug-resistant infections and other ROS-mediated biomedical challenges.

Interfacial electronic mediation via POx bridges between BiVO4 and bimetallic metal-organic frameworks for boosting photoelectrochemical performance

Yaping Zhang,Shuliang Gao,Ning Wang,Yanyan Lin,Yuhang Cheng,Weibing Li,Lei Wang

Effectively addressing the interfacial charge transfer between metal-organic framework (MOF) co-catalysts and photoanodes is crucial for enhancing photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. In this work, an in-situ phosphorization strategy is innovatively proposed to construct oxidized phosphorus groups (PO x ) between a bimetallic MOF and BiVO 4 photoanode, without introducing an additional hole transport layer or impeding light absorption of the photoanode. This approach optimizes the electronic environment at the contact interface between the MOF and BiVO 4 . Mediated by the PO x groups, dual-path charge transfer channels (Bi-PO x -Co and Ni-PO x -V) are established. The electron-enriched Co sites serve as active centers for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), while the electron-enriched V sites suppress metal dissolution. Consequently, the fabricated BVO/PO x /CoNi-MOL photoanode achieves an ultra-high photocurrent density of 6.2 mA cm -2 along with excellent long-term stability. The in-situ phosphorization approach presented here offers a powerful and generalizable methodology for enhancing interfacial charge transfer in composite photoelectrode systems.

Adsorption and Visible Photocatalytic Synergistic Removal of a Cationic Dye with the Composite Material BiVO4/MgAl–LDHs

Yuquan Wang,Yidong Xu,Xinjie Cai,Jinting Wu

Adsorption and photocatalysis are effective in removing organic pollutants from wastewater. This study is based on the memory effects of MgAl–layered double hydroxides (MgAl–LDHs) after high-temperature calcination. By introducing bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) during the reformation of the layered structure via contact with water, a composite material BiVO4/MgAl–LDHs with enhanced adsorption and visible light catalytic performance was synthesized. The effects of the calcination temperature, ratio, initial methylene blue (MB) concentration, and catalyst dosage on the adsorption and photocatalytic performance were investigated. The BiVO4/MgAl–LDHs showed better photocatalytic performance than the pure BiVO4and MgAl–LDHs. Under the optimal conditions, the proportion of MB adsorbed in 20 min was 66.1%, and the percentage of MB degraded during 100 min of photolysis was 92.4%. The composite photocatalyst showed good chemical stability and cyclability, and the adsorption-degradation rate was 86% after four cycles. Analyses of the adsorption and photocatalytic mechanisms for the composite material showed that synergistic adsorption and visible light photocatalysis contributed to the excellent catalytic performance of the BiVO4/MgAl–LDHs. A highly adsorbent photocatalytic composite material exhibiting outstanding performance was prepared via a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method, providing reference information for the removal of organic pollutants from liquids.Keywords:BiVO4;MgAl–LDHs;memory effect;adsorption-visible photocatalytic performance;organic pollutants

Facilitating photogenerated carrier transfer and water oxidation kinetics of BiVO4 photoanode via novel Zn@Co3C functional layer

Weibing Li,Liming Wang,Jie Zhou,Ning Wang,Xinyang Fu,Yibo Wang,Yuyu Bu,Yaping Zhang,Lei Wang

Currently, the sluggish charge transfer kinetics and water oxidation kinetics are still the bottlenecks faced by BiVO 4 photoanodes at present. Herein, an excellent Zn@Co 3 C functional layer is reported for the first time to tackle these problems of BiVO 4 photoanode. Zn@Co 3 C was prepared using a facile electrochemical method with 1,2-dimethylimidazole as a carbon source. In the BiVO 4 /Zn@Co 3 C photoanode, Co 3 C acts as a novel oxygen evolution co-catalyst to significantly enhance water oxidation kinetics. An electron depletion layer formed around Zn species provides a strong driving force for the migration of photogenerated holes from BiVO 4 to Co 3 C catalytic sites. Furthermore, the alternating distribution of Co 3 C and Zn species on the surface of BiVO 4 photoanodes increases the utilization efficiency of Co 3 C co-catalyst. The BiVO 4 /Zn@Co 3 C system constructed in this work not only demonstrates good photoelectrochemical performance in electrolytes (4.6 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE without any hole scavengers), but also enables water splitting in natural seawater. This work demonstrates a novel functional layer that simultaneously facilitates photogenerated carrier transfer and water oxidation kinetics, which holds great promise for constructing high-performance water oxidation systems in various photoanodes.

Facet engineering of BiVO4 photocatalyst for the synergetic adsorption and activation of persulfate for organic pollutants degradation

Ling-Ling Zheng,Lei Tian,Dengke Wang,Ying Chen,Qian-Qian Tang,Qiu-Ju Xing,Xiao-Zhen Liu,Dai-She Wu,Jian-Ping Zou

Highly efficient and synergetic adsorption and activation of persulfate are the main challenges of the persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes. Herein, we synthesized a series of BiVO 4 -X with tunable ratios of (0   1   0)/(1   1   0) co-exposing facet to remove the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) via the regulation of adsorption and activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS). Under visible light, the BiVO 4 -2 with the (0   1   0)/(1   1   0) co-exposing facet ratios of 1.5 can efficiently remove 95.71% SMX in 120 min. Based on the PDS adsorption concentration-texture coefficient model (C-TC), Density functional theory (DFT) calculation and relevant experiments, we confirm the top (0   1   0) facet of BiVO 4 -X can act as the reactive plane to adsorb the PDS via a hanging method. And the photo/electrochemical tests show the facet-dependent internal charge transfer from the (1   1   0) to the activated (0   1   0) facet in the BiVO 4 -X. Finally, we propose the synergistic mechanism of adsorption and activation of PDS via the BiVO 4 -X for organic pollutants degradation. This work develops a new method to precisely regulate the co-exposed facets of crystal materials and illuminates the synergetic mechanism of the simultaneous adsorption and activation of PDS via the regulation of co-exposing facets of the BiVO 4 in the persulfate activation system.

Cobalt-Modified Amorphous Nickel–Iron–Molybdate Cocatalysts to Enhance the Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance of BiVO4 Photoanodes

Yangqin Gao,Wenyue Zhao,Zhijie Tian,Liyang Zhang,Ziyu Teng,Ning Li,Lei Ge

Incorporation of a low content of Co into the structure of the amorphous nickel–iron–molybdate cocatalyst is found to dramatically enhance the photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of BiVO4 at low bias potentials. After being activated via a cyclic voltammetry-related in situ activation process, the photocurrent of the amorphous cocatalyst-modified BiVO4 at 1.23 VRHE was further improved to 5.47 mA/cm2 under AM 1.5G (100 mW/cm2) illumination. Compared to pure BiVO4, the activated composite BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a greatly enhanced interfacial charge injection efficiency in the whole potential range and displays a low onset potential of 0.28 VRHE, which delivers the photoanode an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 1.78% at 0.65 VRHE. During the in situ activation process, a significant loss of Mo cations accompanied by an incorporation of phosphate ions was revealed, which suggests that a rapid surface reconstruction process was triggered in the surface-loaded amorphous cocatalyst. In addition to the surface reconstruction, the oxidation state of Ni ions and the density of oxygen vacancies in the amorphous cocatalyst were also found to be increased. The combined effect of incorporation of Co and surface reconstruction is believed to induce a rational adjustment of the electronic structure of the amorphous cocatalyst, which forms dense active sites and ultimately enhances the photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of BiVO4 in the whole potential range.

Visible-light-driven Ag3VO4-BiVO4/C3N4 with continuous type II heterojunctions for effective removal of Cr(VI)

Qi Wang,Biao Xue,Meng Tan,Ningyi Li,Hao Zhou,Hao Du,Guoxiang Yang,Huaze Zhu,Qiang Li

Heterogeneous photocatalysis have attracted extensive attention in the field of environmental remediation. The low charge separation efficiency and poor light response of single semiconductor can be remarkably improved through forming heterojunction . The construction of ternary heterojunctions can further inhibit the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers by the separated redox active sites. A novel and highly efficient Ag 3 VO 4 -BiVO 4 /C 3 N 4 ternary heterojunction were successfully synthesized and characterized in terms of structure, chemical composition and photocatalytic properties. The photocatalytic activities of as-synthesized photocatalysts were evaluated by the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in the aqueous solution. The photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction rate of ternary heterojunction is 19 times higher than that by single BiVO 4 . The lower pH, higher concentration of coexisted organics and stronger light intensity endowed photocatalysts with better photocatalytic performance. More Cr(VI) ions were remained in the solution with higher initial concentration of Cr(VI) under the same light irradiation. The Cr(VI) ions could also be totally removed by the ternary heterojunction even after five cycling tests showing good cycling stability. The internal electric field between Ag 3 VO 4 , BiVO 4 and graphitic carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron/hole pairs. The suitable band alignments endow ternary heterojunction with isolated oxidation and reduction reactions due to the separated holes and electrons, meanwhile, suppressing charge carrier recombination. This research provides guidance for the rational design of multi-components heterojunction for photocatalytic environmental remediation.

Directed synthesis of SnO2@BiVO4/Co-Pi photoanode for highly efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting and urea oxidation

Jingchao Liu,Jianming Li,Mingfei Shao,Min Wei

To achieve highly efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, great efforts have been dedicated to develop various photoelectrode materials in pure water electrolytes. Recently, some studies are turning to hydrogen production from seawater or wastewater, to save valuable freshwater resources and make waste profitable. Here, we fabricate one-dimensional SnO2@BiVO4 core–shell nanorod arrays decorated with cobalt-phosphate cocatalyst (1D SnO2@BiVO4/Co-Pi NRAs), which show efficient charge separation and transport properties due to the rational design of conducting core-layer and introduction of the cocatalyst. The as-obtained SnO2@BiVO4/Co-Pi photoanodes exhibit largely enhanced PEC water oxidation performance: the maximum photocurrent density of 2.63 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE is 6.58 times higher than that of pristine BiVO4 films (∼0.40 mA cm−2). Moreover, the ternary photoanode exhibits promising PEC performance for urea oxidation, giving rise to a current density of 3.44 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE in a neutral urea electrolyte. This work presents a sunlight-driven, eco-friendly and sustainable method to produce hydrogen and simultaneously treat urea-rich wastewater.

Facile fabrication of g-C3N4 QDs/BiVO4 Z-scheme heterojunction towards enhancing photodegradation activity under visible light

Chunxue Li,Huinan Che,Chunbo Liu,Guangbo Che,Paul. A. Charpentier,William Z. Xu,Xiuyan Wang,Lihui Liu

In this study, we report a facile and green strategy to produce graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-C 3 N 4 QDs)/BiVO 4 Z-scheme nanoheterostructure, which is composed by g-C 3 N 4 QDs assembled on the surface of mesh-like BiVO 4 crystals. As compared with pure BiVO 4 , the g-C 3 N 4 QDs/BiVO 4 composite showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance towards degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and Tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation, which is attributed to the increased surface area, (increased number of photocatalytically active sites) and the improved efficiency of separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs through an efficient charge transfer Z-scheme system. The stability and durability of photocatalyst are also discussed in detail. Moreover, the possible enhanced photocatalytic mechanism was put forwarded and explained by the electron spin resonance (ESR) spin-trap technique and active species trapping experiments. The successful implementation of this work will have guiding significance for the preparation of photocatalysts, and provide theoretical basis and experimental guidance for future development of Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism of the hybrid photocatalysts with better performance.

Enhanced degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride using photocatalysis and sulfate radical-based oxidation processes by Co/BiVO4 composites

Xin Chen,Jiabin Zhou,Tianlei Zhang,Lidan Ding

The Co/BiVO 4 composites were prepared by wet impregnation method and used to combine photocatalysis and sulfate radical-based oxidation processes for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. The effect factors including the mass percentage of cobalt and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) concentration were investigated in detail. The tetracycline hydrochloride solution with an initial concentration of 40 mg/L could be completely degraded within only 25 min in Co/BiVO 4 +Vis + PMS system. By cyclic degradation experiment, as-prepared Co/BiVO 4 composites had good reusability and stability. Free radicals quenching experiment indicated that SO 4 − and OH played an important role for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. We confirmed the redox cycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ during the PMS activation process by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the above results, a possible enhanced reaction mechanism was proposed.

Zinc-doped g-C3N4/BiVO4 as a Z-scheme photocatalyst system for water splitting under visible light

Zhen Qin,Wenjian Fang,Junying Liu,Zhidong Wei,Zhi Jiang,Wenfeng Shangguan

A two-step photocatalytic water splitting system, termed a “Z-scheme system”, was achieved using Zn-doped g-C 3 N 4 for H 2 evolution and BiVO 4 for O 2 evolution with Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ as a shuttle redox mediator. H 2 and O 2 were evaluated simultaneously when the doping amount of zinc was 10%. Moreover, Zn-doped (10%) g-C 3 N 4 synthesized by an impregnation method showed superior active ability to form the Z-scheme with BiVO 4 than by in-situ synthesis. X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the samples. It was determined that more Zn–N bonds could be formed on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 by impregnation, which could facilitate charge transfer.

Switched electrochemical sensor for hydroquinone based on rGO@Au, monoclinic BiVO4 and temperature-sensitive polymer composite material

Chenxi Wang,Pengcheng Zhao,Li Zhang,Yilin Wang,Qian Fu,Rongjie Li,Jiaodi Li,Chunyan Li,Yixi Xie,Junjie Fei

In this paper, a temperature-controlled “On-Off” electrochemical sensor for the detection of hydroquinone (HQ) is constructed by using a composite film of temperature-sensitive polymer poly (N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL), the nanomaterial rGO@Au and the monoclinic bismuth metavanadate (m-BiVO 4 ). The sensor exhibits good temperature sensitivity and reversibility. When the temperature drops below the Lowest Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) of the PNVCL, the PNVCL will be in a “stretched” state, which hinders the electron exchange between hydroquinone and the surface of the electrode, presenting an “Off” state for the sensor. On the contrary, when the temperature exceeds the LCST, the PNVCL will be in a “contracted” state, which hydroquinone can perform an effective redox process and generate a response current, showing an “On” status. Due to the good electroconductivity and electrocatalytic ability of rGO@Au and m-BiVO 4 , the proposed sensor showed excellent detection performances. Hence, the sensor shows wide linear ranges (2.0 to 30.0 μM and 30.0 to 152.0 μM) and low limit of detection (0.6 μM). In addition, the “On-Off” electrochemical sensor may provide new ideas for the application of intelligent polymers.
