Synthesis of dual-functionalized APTES-Bentonite/PVDF mixed-matrix membranes for the efficient separation of CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2

Shaocan Dong,Weiqiu Huang,Xufei Li,Xinya Wang,Baoyou Yan,Zhen Zhang,Jing Zhong

In response to global climate change, most countries have set carbon reduction targets. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which combine the characteristics of inorganic nanofillers and organic matrices, have received wide attentions because of their good permeability and selective performance for the separation of CO 2 from industrial waste gases. However, the poor dispersion, compatibility and interfacial defects often lead to poor gas separation performance. In this paper, according to the dissolution-diffusion and Lewis acid-base theories, inorganic filler of amino-functionalized Bentonite (APTES-Bentonite) with -NH 2 was firstly synthesized to improve the affinity of CO 2 . Then, the dual-functionalized MMMs of APTES-Bentonite/PVDF (A-B/P MMMs) was prepared and adopted for the separation of CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 , showing the increase of 87.76% and 75.31% compared to the pristine PVDF membrane, respectively. These excellent performances were attributed to the synergistic effect of APTES-Bentonite with -NH 2 groups and PVDF with -F groups, which provide a dual-functional transport pathway for CO 2 molecules due to the interactions of host-guest. Overall, the customized A-B/P MMMs offer superior CO 2 separation performance, which provides some valuable references for large-scale CO 2 capture studies.

Atmospheric preservation of CH4 hydrate above ice point: A potential application for high-density natural gas storage under moderate conditions

Shenglong Wang,Jian Xu,Shuanshi Fan,Yanhong Wang,Xuemei Lang,Chi Yu

Clathrate hydrates is an ideal host for natural gas, by entrapping CH 4 molecules in cage-like structures composed of hydrogen-bonded water molecules, natural gas can be stored in solid form with high density. However, the suppression of hydrate dissociation under moderate thermodynamic conditions is still challenging. In this study, to increase the preservation stability of CH 4 hydrate at atmospheric pressure, a new surface-treatment method was proposed by coating CH 4 hydrate with CP-CH 4 hydrate. CH 4 hydrate pellets formed from ice powder or 0.03 wt% Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution were mechanically pressurized with CP to form hydrate pellets. The presence of CP-CH 4 hydrate layer on the sample surface was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, and the hydrate pellet was successfully preserved under superheated conditions, i.e., 0.1 MPa − 0.3 MPa, 279 K − 284 K with a storage volume density up to ~146 V CH4 (STP)/ V water , and the accumulated CH 4 loss was less than 0.3 mol% for hydrate pellet formed from ice powder, and 3 mol% for hydrate pellets formed from SDS solution for at least 8 h.

A microporous zinc–organic framework with Lewis basic pyridyl sites for highly selective C2H2/CH4 and C2H2/CO2 gas separation

Peng Yan,Jucai Yang,Xiangying Hao,Zhisheng Chen,Guanhua Shen,Yanhua Zhao,Deyun Ma,Jiaxin Zhu

A new Zn-based metal–organic framework with 8-connected hex topology constructed from bipyridine and carboxylate ligands, namely [Zn(cpna)3(tmbpy)]n·4DMF (1) (H2cpna = 6-(4-carboxyphenyl)nicotinic acid; tmbpy = 3,3′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridine), has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The Zn-MOF was structurally characterized and retained a good crystal structure after activation (1a), an indication of permanent porosity. 1a exhibits a BET surface of 770 m2 g−1 and the maximum aperture of 8.60 Å. Single component adsorption isotherm measurements of C2H2, CO2, CH4, CO and N2 on 1a were performed both at 273 K and 298 K, and the selectivities for C2H2/CH4, C2H2/CO2, CO2/CO, CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 were estimated on the basis of the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST). 1a shows the uptake of C2H2 (3.89 mmol g−1) and CO2 (3.52 mmol g−1) at 273 K and 100 kPa, respectively. Due to the Lewis basic pyridyl sites inside the channel of the framework, 1a showed good adsorption selectivities for C2H2/CH4(50 : 50) and C2H2/CO2(50 : 50) at 298 K (100 kPa).

Highly-interspersed biomass-derived carbon quantum dots onto floral CoAl-LDH for significantly enhanced CO2 photoreduction into CO and CH4

Jia Li,Ge Gao,Yang Liu,Yang Li,Zhi Liu

Stimulating photocatalytic activity of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been being as a research hotspot in photocatalysis . Quantum dots doping is a well acknowledged strategy to utilize their photoelectric superiorities to overcome the intrinsic defects of pristine LDHs. In this work, waste biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (B-CQDs)-interspersed CoAl-LDH photocatalysts (B/CALs) are successfully prepared by means of a simple hydrothermal method from green and renewable points of view. The introduction of B-CQDs significantly broadens the light absorption range and capacity of CoAl-LDH. As the terminal electron acceptor , the highly-dispersed B-CQDs can effectively prolong the lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers and promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. No assistance from any sacrificial agent , the optimal sample of B/CAL-2 exhibits significantly enhanced photoreduction activity of CO 2 -to-CO and CH 4 , 6.4- and 7.5-fold higher than those of the pristine CoAl-LDH, respectively, and also surpassing many reported high-level LDHs counterparts. Such an uncomplicated case guides a green and feasible route to modify semiconductor materials with renewable biomass, which is expected to be applied to others for enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Solar light promoted CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 over photo-thermal responsive dispersed Co on defective CeO2 composite derived from MOFs

Deng Pan,Yanan Wang,Han Li,Yuzhe Zhang,Qian Liang,Man Zhou,Zhongyu Li,Song Xu

The conversion of the greenhouse gas CO 2 represents a pragmatic and environmentally friendly approach. However, the substantial energy demands of the reaction hamper its widespread application. Here, we designed an efficient catalyst prepared by Ce-MOF and ZIF-67 precursor, namely Co/CeO 2 , for photothermal CO 2 methanation under light and auxiliary heating. CeO 2 synthesized by Ce-MOF has a good structure and abundant oxygen vacancies, meanwhile, Co has abundant active sites and strong adsorption capacity and is well-dispersed on CeO 2 . As a result, the catalyst exhibits high CH 4 yield of 885.27 mmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 and CO yield of 24.5 mmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 . Moreover, it has good selectivity and catalytic durability. Through the analysis of the reaction pathway under the conditions of photothermal catalysis, the hydrogenation reaction of formate can efficiently generate CH 4 and H 2 O due to the promotion of hot carriers. This work demonstrated the advantages of photothermal co-catalysis and provides a potential strategy for efficient CO 2 reduction.

Monolithic g-C3N4/reduced graphene oxide aerogel with in situ embedding of Pd nanoparticles for hydrogenation of CO2 to CH4

Ruiyang Zhang,Zeai Huang,Chengjin Li,Yisu Zuo,Ying Zhou

Photocatalysis has been known as a promising technique for environmental remediation and clean energy production. However, there are two weaknesses for photocatalyst in powder form applied in the gas-phase catalysis. One is the inadequate contact of gas pollutant as well as utilization of light energy and the other one is the intricate operations for recycle. Herein, we reported a new-type monolithic Pd-embedded g-C 3 N 4 /reduced graphene oxide aerogel (Pd-g-C 3 N 4 /RGOA) photocatalyst prepared through one-pot thermal reduction method. In this case, a synergistic effect was realized, in which g-C 3 N 4 powder was uniformly dispersed on the surface of RGOA and connected with RGOA through the formation of 2D-2D π-π conjugated structure to enhance the contact of gas pollution and utilization of light energy as well as separation of charge carriers, while Pd acted as an electron sink to promote electron-hole separation and its unique electronic structure improved the gas adsorption. As a result, the obtained Pd-g-C 3 N 4 /RGOA revealed enhanced hydrogenation of CO 2 to CH 4 with a max CH 4 evolution rate of 6.4 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is 12.8-fold enhancement than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 . This study provides a fresh insight for the design of efficient monolithic photocatalyst for gas-phase catalysis.

Enhanced and Selective Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to CH4 Using a Pt-Loaded CuPc/g-C3N4 Z-Scheme Heterojunction Catalyst

Jinshan Chen,Jiangfeng Lu,Ran Lang,Chi Wang,Shuangyou Bao,Yuan Li,Kai Li,Maohong Fan

In this study, a novel Pt-loaded CuPc/g-C 3 N 4 (PtCuCN) composite was synthesized for the selective photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CH 4 under visible light. The PtCuCN catalyst achieved a CH 4 yield of 39.8 μmol g⁻ 1 h⁻ 1 , significantly outperforming bulk g-C₃N₄ and CuPc alone by factors of 2.5 and 3.1, respectively, with a high selectivity of 90%. In comparison with other commonly studied photocatalysts, such as g-C 3 N 4 -based catalysts, the PtCuCN composite exhibited superior CH 4 yield and product selectivity, demonstrating its potential as a more efficient photocatalyst for CO₂ reduction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and in-situ infrared (IR) analysis revealed that the Pt⁰ species effectively lower the activation energy for CH 4 formation, while CuPc extends the light absorption range and enhances charge separation. The combined effects of these components in a Z-scheme heterojunction provide new insights into designing highly selective CO 2 -to-CH 4 photocatalysts. This work demonstrates the potential of PtCuCN as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for CO 2 reduction to CH 4 under visible light.

Green synthesis of ultramicroporous carbons by in-situ ionic activation of coal-derived humic acids for efficient CH4/N2 separation

Chujie Zhang,Yugao Wang,Jiaxin Jing,Jinping Li,Jiangfeng Yang

Coal-based porous carbon usually has broad pore size distribution, and it remains a major challenge for achieving controllable and optimized pore size distributions in the ultramicroporous (<0.7 nm) range. In this work, coal-derived humic acid-based carbons (HACs) were successfully synthesized by in-situ ionic activation, which consumed much less KOH than the traditional KOH activation method, demonstrating environmentally friendly advantages. The prepared HACs were characterized of the concentrated ultramicroporous pore size distribution. Importantly, ultramicroporous pore size of HACs could be controlled at the sub-angstrom level by slightly adjusting the KOH amount. Dynamic breakthrough experiments and PSA process simulations strongly demonstrated the superior and applicable separation performance of HACs for CH 4 /N 2 mixtures. The investigation extends the application of in-situ ionic activation in coal-based materials and provides a cheap, green, and efficient coal-based adsorbent for low-concentration coalbed methane enrichment.

High-efficiency membrane derived from maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene nanocomposite medicated by a series of cyclodextrins for H2/CH4 separation

Xuyang Li,Yingke Zhang,Shuyi Li,Xiaojing Xing,Xinfeng Cheng,Lin Wang,Xianchao Du,Shuai Li,Dongfang Qiu,Meng Guo

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) show great potential for application in hydrogen separation study. However, the MMMs prepared by the traditional strategy have the imperfect compatibility of the matrix and fillers, and the non-ideal microstructure, undergoing a trade-off between permeability and selectivity. Herein, we report a new in-situ limited filling method to improve the H 2 /CH 4 separation performance of the maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) membranes medicated by a series of cyclodextrins (CDs). The introduction of CDs can better loosen the MAPP microstructure and ensure that the nanocomposite membranes have excellent H 2 permeabilities. The two-time limited filling can further compensate for the microvoids or defects in the membrane microstructure, thereby improving the H 2 /CH 4 separation stability of the nanocomposite membranes. The H 2 /CH 4 selectivities of the α-CD/MAPP, β-CD/MAPP, MEDβCD/MAPP, and γ-CD/MAPP are 7.1, 5.7, 6.3, and 5.1 times higher than that of pure MAPP membrane, respectively. This work provides a straightforward and effective strategy to fabricate homogeneous MMMs for gas separation.

Insights into Selective Sensitivity of In2O3-CuO Heterojunction Nanocrystals to CH4 over CO and H2: Experiments and First-Principles Calculations

Shuai Nie,Jing Li,Yunxia He,Xitao Yin

Metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors have demonstrated exceptional potential in gas detection due to their high sensitivity, rapid response time, and impressive selectivity for identifying various sorts of gases. However, selectively distinguishing CH4 from those of CO and H2 remains a significant challenge. This difficulty primarily stems from the weakly reducing nature of CH4, which results in a low adsorption response and makes it prone to interference from stronger reducing gases in the surroundings. Herein, we synthesized In2O3-xCuO nanocomposites using a hydrothermal method to explore their gas sensing properties toward CH4, CO, and H2. Characterization tests confirmed the successful preparation of In2O3-xCuO nanocomposites with different In:Cu molar ratios and the formation of a p-n heterojunction. The gas sensing test results indicated that the In2O3-2.1CuO nanocomposites calcined at 500 °C and measured at 350 °C displayed a p-type response for CH4 and an n-type response for CO and H2, allowing for accurate differentiation of CH4 from CO and H2. Moreover, the In2O3-2.1CuO sensor also showed excellent stability and reproducibility across all three gases. First-principles calculations revealed distinct changes in the electronic structure of the In2O3-CuO heterojunction upon adsorption of CH4, CO, and H2, a finding that aligns with empirical evidence. The gas selectivity mechanism was effectively explained by variations in the energy band gap, driven by electrical behavior during the adsorption process. This work suggests a promising approach for developing selective gas sensors capable of detecting weakly reducing gases.

Dual p-n Z-scheme heterostructure boosted superior photoreduction CO2 to CO, CH4 and C2H4 in In2S3/MnO2/BiOCl photocatalyst

Qiuling Chen,Shun Wang,Baoji Miao,Qiuping Chen

The creation of a Z-scheme heterojunction is a sophisticated strategy to enhance photocatalytic efficiency. In our study, we synthesized an In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl dual Z-scheme heterostructure by growing BiOCl nanoplates on the sheets of In 2 S 3 nanoflowers, situated on the surface of MnO 2 nanowires. This synthesis involved a combination of hydrothermal and solution combustion methods. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl composite exhibited notable photo reduction performance and photocatalytic stability. This was attributed to the pivotal roles of BiOCl and MnO 2 in the composite, acting as auxiliaries to enhance the electronic structure and facilitate the adsorption/activation capacity of CO 2 and H 2 O. The yield rates of CO, CH 4 , and C 2 H 4 over In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl as the catalyst were 3.94, 5.5, and 3.64 times higher than those of pure In 2 S 3 , respectively. Photoelectrochemical analysis revealed that the dual Z-scheme heterostructure, with its oxygen vacancies and large surface area, enhanced CO 2 absorption and active sites on the nanoflower/nanowire intersurfaces. Consequently, the dual Z-scheme charge transfer pathway provided efficient channels for boosting electron transfer and charge separation, resulting in high C 2 H 4 , CH 4 , and CO yields of formed and exihibits an promising photoreduction rate of CO 2 to CO (51.2 µmol/g.h), CH 4 (42.4 µmol/g.h) and C 2 H 4 (63.2 µmol/g.h), respectively. DFT, in situ Diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption tests were employed to verify the intermediates pathway. The study proposed a potential photocatalytic mechanism based on these findings.

2D/2D Bi2WO6/C3N5 S-scheme heterojunction for highly selective production of CH4 by photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light

Huiming Zhang,He Bian,Fang Wang,Yaping Li,Lijun Zhu,Daohong Xia

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is a practical solution to the energy dilemma and environmental damage caused by greenhouse gases, and it is very important to explore high-efficiency photocatalysts. In this study, a novel Bi 2 WO 6 /C 3 N 5 step(S)-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed and applied for CO 2 photoreduction. The 2D/2D structure showed excellent photocatalytic properties, with methane production reaching 1.976 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 and selectivity reaching 100 % under 5 hours of visible light irradiation. The result indicates that combining Bi 2 WO 6 and C 3 N 5 can promote interfacial charge separation and maintain the optimal reducing ability of photogenerated electrons. Based on experimental and theoretical calculations, we characterized the reaction mechanism and heterojunction formation mechanism. This study offers a novel approach to improve the selectivity and photocatalytic efficiency of CO 2 reduction products.
