The assessment and treatment of heavy metal pollution are eternal subjects of environmental protection. Facile on-site assessment of heavy metal pollution and efficient, rapid removal of pollutes are still challenging. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great promise as absorbents for heavy metal pollution treatment. To overcome the application limits of COF powders, a COF-based monolithic composite is prepared by direct in-situ growth of an N/O-rich COF on the surface of a melamine foam (MF). The resultant MF@COF inherits the macro-porous channels of MF, the good crystallinity of COF, and integrates the attractive features of monolithic materials such as ease of operation, facile and highly efficient recovery, and good reusability . The abundant N/O groups endow MF@COF with powerful capture capability towards various heavy metal ions . Its maximum adsorption capacity for Cd 2+ is 278.45 mg/g, and the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 1–3 s. The adsorption kinetic of Cd 2+ by MF@COF follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model , and the adsorption isotherm conforms to Freundlich model. Rapid adsorption, together with the easy-to-operate feature of monolithic material, make the ultrafast water purification possible. Meanwhile, MF@COF works well for the highly efficient enrichment of Cd 2+ to realize the naked-eye detection of Cd 2+ pollution at low levels, thus may be developed as an important tool for both on-site assessment and rapid treatment of heavy metal pollution.

The occurrence of sulfonamides in the water environment has garnered significant attention due to their potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Despite this significance, effectively removing sulfonamides from polluted water sources remains a challenging task. In this study, a series of hierarchical magnetic porous carbon materials (M-NPC) doped with iron and nitrogen are prepared using a direct carbonization method, employing a covalent organic framework (COF) as a precursor. The resulting M-NPC exhibits a hierarchical structure, high porosity, and abundant N-containing binding sites, enabling efficient removal of sulfamerazine (SMR) within 2 min. Mechanism studies reveal that the adsorption of SMR by M-NPC followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 = 0.999) and the Freundlich model. Furthermore, electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bond interactions are identified as the dominant mechanisms contributing to excellent adsorption performance. Additionally, the M-NPC demonstrates easy operation and good regeneration ability, making it highly promising for the efficient removal of sulfonamides from wastewater. This development marks a significant advancement in addressing the challenge of removing sulfonamides from polluted water sources.

Facing the energy crisis, using the salinity gradient between seawater and freshwater for osmotic energy conversion is a direct way to obtain energy. So far, most nanofluidic membranes utilized for osmotic energy generation are cation-selective. Given that both anion- and cation-selective membranes have the identical importance for energy conversion devices, it is of great significance to develop anion-selective membranes. Herein, an anion-selective membrane is synthesized by in situ growth of imine-bridged covalent organic framework (COF) on ordered anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) at room temperature. The imine groups and residual amino groups of COF can combine with protons in neutral solution, enabling the COF positively charged and efficiently transport of anions. Particularly, due to the asymmetry in the charge and structure of COF/AAO, the as-prepared membrane exhibits excellent ionic current rectification property, which can inhibit ion concentration polarization effectively and possess high ion selectivity and permeability. Using the present COF/AAO membrane, salinity gradient energy can be successfully harvested from solutions with high salt content, and the output power density reached 17.95W m −2 under a 500-fold salinity gradient. The study provides a new avenue for construction and application of anion-selective membranes in the smart ion transport and efficient energy conversion.

Covalent organic framework (COF) is an emergent class of ordered porous materials with high stability. The fabrication of thin and continuous COF membrane for small molecule separation remains challenging due to the relatively large pore size of COF materials and weak COF-substrate interfacial interaction. Herein, a two-dimensional COF layer was spin-coated on a porous substrate followed by constructing a bio-inspired calcium alginate (Alg-Ca) layer to obtain a dual-layer membrane with a thickness less than 100 nm. The Alg-Ca layer afforded a superhydrophilic surface to capture water molecules, and the porous COF layer rendered selective water channels. The dual-layer membrane synergistically strenthened the solution-diffusion mechanism through the manipulation of the membrane structure and transport process. The synergy of two layers endowed the membrane with superior water-selective performance with permeation flux of 3614 g/(m 2 h) and water content in permeate of 99.7 wt% for n -butanol dehydration. The fabrication of dual-layer membrane in this study may offer a new strategy for highly efficient separation of liquid small molecule mixtures.

A new covalent organic framework material (NWNU-COF-1) linked with –NH– bonds is synthesized by the condensation reaction of melamine and 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and its structure and properties are characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), N2 adsorption–desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The BET specific surface area of NWNU-COF-1 is 301.149 m2 g−1, and the pore size is about 1.41 nm. The preparation is also simple and cheap. This material exhibits a significant pseudocapacitance characteristic in a 6 M potassium hydroxide electrolyte, and the highest specific capacitance value of 155.38 F g−1 at 0.25 A g−1 current density in a three electrode configuration. This COF also demonstrates about 100% capacitance retention after 20 000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles, which is equal, even better compared with the COF materials reported previously, the nano/mesoporous carbon materials and even nitrogen doped carbons.

A hybrid material, M@C-Br@GMA@Glu, consisting of a porphyrin-based metal–organic framework-covalent organic framework (MOF@COF), has been meticulously synthesized using a post-synthetic modification approach. This advanced material has demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in glycopeptide enrichment, characterized by an impressively low detection limit (0.2 fmol μL−1), high selectivity (1 : 2000), and loading capacity for glycopeptides (100 mg g−1). In practical applications with complex biological samples, 210 glycopeptides associated with 87 glycoproteins from the serum of the healthy group, and 156 glycopeptides related to 85 glycoproteins from the serum of cervical cancer were identified after enrichment with M@C-Br@GMA@Glu. Subsequent genetic ontology analysis has elucidated the relationship between cervical cancer and glycosylation, focusing on biological processes such as complement activation, innate immune response mechanisms, and the structural dynamics of the extracellular matrix. The collective findings not only validate the material's proficiency in the sensitive and selective enrichment of glycopeptides, but also underscore its potential in biomarker discovery applications.

A ratiometric fluorescence probe was developed by integrating a covalent organic framework (TP-BDB-COF) with N-doped quantum dots (N-CDs) encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (N-CDs@ZIF-8), enabling highly sensitive and selective detection of hypochlorite (ClO⁻) in aqueous environments. The yellow-orange-emissive TP-BDB-COF, synthesized by the condensation of 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (TP) and 3,3’-dimethyl-[1,1’-biphenyl]-4,4’-diamine (BDB), exhibited specific fluorescence quenching at 570 nm upon interaction with ClO⁻. The blue-emissive N-CDs@ZIF-8 served as a stable reference signal at 430 nm, enabling self-calibration via the ratiometric signal (F 430 /F 570 ). This dual-signal strategy significantly improved detection accuracy and reliability. This sensor exhibited a broad linear fluorometric response range of 0.05 to 200 µM for ClO⁻, with an exceptionally low detection limit of 22 nM. Moreover, its practical applicability was validated through analysis of real water samples, yielding satisfactory spike recoveries between 98.53% and 101.30%. This approach not only offers a robust method for monitoring ClO⁻ in complex matrices but also provides a versatile framework for constructing high-performance ratiometric sensors. Graphical abstract

Effective glycemic control is paramount for optimal wound healing in diabetic patients. Traditional antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatments, while important, often fall short in addressing the hyperglycemic conditions of diabetic wounds. Therefore, the development of novel therapeutic strategies for accelerating diabetic wound healing has garnered escalating attention. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers constructed through strong covalent bonds. Their exceptional structural tunability renders them as an ideal platform for advanced therapeutic applications. Herein, two redox-responsive Zn(II)-coordinated porphyrin COF hydrogels are constructed, which demonstrate rapid blood glucose reduction in localized tissues, along with improved angiogenesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and photothermal antimicrobial capacities within the hyperglycemic blood environment of diabetic patients, thereby effectively controlling infections and concurrently promoting wound healing. Specifically, COFs with built-in dual active sites, i.e., disulfide or diselenide moieties, can be cleaved by ROS, releasing Zn(II) ions that possess antibacterial and tissue-repairing properties. Furthermore, the Zn(II)-porphyrin COF exhibits glucose oxidase (GOX)-like activity, catalyzing the conversion of glucose into non-glucose metabolites. This synergistic combination of glucose-responsive Zn(II) release and GOX-like activities effectively restores tissue redox balance and improves the wound microenvironment, offering a promising strategy for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic wounds.

Flexible ammonia (NH3) gas sensors have gained increasing attention for their potential in medical diagnostics and health monitoring, as they serve as a biomarker for kidney disease. Utilizing the pre-designable and porous properties of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is an innovative way to address the demand for high-performance NH3sensing. However, COF particles frequently encounter aggregation, low conductivity, and mechanical rigidity, reducing the effectiveness of portable NH3detection. To overcome these challenges, we propose a practical approach using polyvinyl alcohol-carrageenan (κPVA) as a template for in the situ growth of two-dimensional COF film and particles to produce a flexible hydrogel gas sensor (COF/κPVA). The synergistic effect of COF and κPVA enhances the gas sensing, water retention, and mechanical properties. The COF/κPVA hydrogel shows a 54.4% response to 1 ppm NH3with a root mean square error of less than 5% and full recovery compared to the low response and no recovery of bare κPVA. Owing to the dual effects of the COF film and the particles anchoring the water molecules, the COF/κPVA hydrogel remained stable after 70 h in atmospheric conditions, in contrast, the bare κPVA hydrogel was completely dehydrated. Our work might pave the way for highly sensitive hydrogel gas sensors, which have intriguing applications in flexible electronic devices for gas sensing.

Developing advanced electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) materials is crucial for curbing electromagnetic pollution. This study presents the synthesis of core–shell Fe/Fe 3 O 4 /C composites, FFC-700 and FFC-800, derived from Prussian blue@covalent organic framework (PB@COF) via pyrolysis at 700 and 800 °C, and the hollow FFC-900 at 900 °C. Their chemical compositions, microstructures, and EMWA performances were thoroughly examined. FFC-700 and FFC-800, featuring core–shell structures and abundant interfaces, facilitate electron transfer and enhance polarization effects. Notably, FFC-700 achieved a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of − 75.82 dB at an ultrathin thickness of 1.45 mm, with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.22 GHz at 1.66 mm, spanning the entire Ku-band. FFC-800 also provides substantial EMWA performance, with an RL min of − 30.14 dB at 1.61 mm and an EAB of 6.08 GHz at 1.67 mm, also covering the Ku-band. Radar cross-section (RCS) simulations reveal the absorbers’ exceptional radar stealth, with their coatings significantly reducing RCS values. The composites’ adjustable structure, balanced composition, and dielectric-magnetic synergy optimize impedance matching for full-Ku-band coverage. This work offers a promising approach to fabricating efficient EMWA materials from PBA@COF and MOF@COF precursors.

Construction of covalent organic frameworks (COF) membranes on the polymeric substrate was challenging by interfacial polymerization (IP) process. In this study, COF-LZU1 membranes were fabricated by IP on the preheated PSf substrates to investigate the influence of substrate properties (i.e., pore size and porosity) on the COF-LZU1 layer formation. The substrates with tunable pore size (18.61 to 14.53 nm) and porosity (2.05 % to 0.42 %) could be obtained with the pretreating temperature of 20 °C to 50 °C. Preheated substrate altered monomer storage and diffusion, leading to the variations in crosslinking degree (14.89 % to 87.63 %) and observed thickness (142.9–575.9 nm). The preheated substrates endowed better growth conditions by inhibiting the COF-LZU1 intrusion into the substrates, and optimal COF 40°C membrane had water flux of 6.57 L m −2 h −1 , and Na 2 SO 4 rejection ratio of 90.9 %. The rejection ratio of pharmaceuticals by COF-LZU1 membranes was low due to adsorption. Correlation analysis showed that the C N bond content was unfavorable for absorption ( P < 0.05), and the increase of crosslinking and crystallinity of the COF-LZU1 layer will be beneficial to boost the pharmaceutical rejection. This work provided a facile method and valuable insight for the COF-LZU1 membrane fabrication to enhance desalination and pharmaceutical removal.

The trace detection of both aqueous and gaseous nicotine is significant for health monitoring and environmental analysis. In this study, a novel covalent organic framework (COF)-based composite was designed to enrich and detect nicotine using surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The negatively charged TpPa-SO 3 H exhibited exceptional enrichment capabilities for nicotine, demonstrating an adsorption capacity of 148.0 mg·g −1 . Chemical interactions, including π-π stacking and acid-base interactions, were observed between the COFs and nicotine molecules. Furthermore, chemical enhancement induced by electron transfer between TpPa-SO 3 H and nicotine was corroborated through energy level analysis. By leveraging the bimetallic synergism between core-shell Au and Ag to achieve electromagnetic enhancement, the TpPa-SO 3 H-Au@Ag composite achieved a detection limit of 6.0 × 10 −10 mol·L −1 for aqueous nicotine. The detection of nicotine in e-cigarette oil and Cambridge filter demonstrates its application capability for different kinds of real samples. By the crosslinking with chitosan, the synthesized aerogel was successfully applied for the on-site gaseous nicotine detection in cigarette smoke. Additionally, the plasmonic aerogel enabled the identification of different kinds of cigarettes using artificial intelligence-assisted gaseous fingerprint spectra recognition and classification.
