Fast Li₂O₂ Electrochemistry Enabled by Co-Nx/Co (111) with Optimized Intermediate Adsorption

Lili Liu,Chen Wang,Luxin Zhao,Yayun Xiao,Weiwei Fang,Lanling Zhao,Faxing Wang,Yuping Wu

The practical development of Li-O 2 batteries (LOBs) urgently needs to explore robust cathode catalysts to boost the sluggish Li 2 O 2 reaction kinetics and parasitic reactions despite their theoretically high specific energy. Profound understanding of the cathode properties and the battery performance is rather critical in developing rational-designed electrocatalysts. In this study, a Co-N x /Co (111) decorated N-doped hierarchical carbon framework (Co-N x /Co@NHCF) is proposed as an efficient cathode in LOBs. Spectroscopic analysis coupled with experimental results suggests that the Co-N x /Co (111) catalytic center can significantly reduce the battery overpotential, and meanwhile, the hierarchical carbon framework ensures rapid mass transportation and provides sufficient space to accommodate Li 2 O 2 deposition. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the incorporated Co (111) facet can effectively regulate the electronic distribution of N-carbon, optimize the adsorption of desirable intermediates, and eventually facilitate oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. As expected, the Co-N x /Co@NHCF catalyzed LOBs deliver a high discharge/charge capacity of 6.15/ 6.22 mAh cm −2 with a columbic efficiency of 98.9%, along with a high rate cycling of 700 h at 0.3 mA cm −2 . This work provides valuable instruction for the rational design of efficient catalysts for high-performance LOBs via optimization of the crystal structure and the adsorption of intermediates.

Precise Site-Hydrophobicity Modulation for Boosting High-Performance CO2 Electroreduction

Lei Xiong,Xianbiao Fu,Yu Zhou,Pei Nian,Zheng Wang,Qin Yue

Electrochemical CO2-to-CO conversion is a significant alternative to lower CO2 emission and build carbon-neutral processes, as well as produce CO, which can directly serve as a syngas precursor for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. However, the easy water flooding of the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) employed in a flow cell during CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) electrolysis remains a tough problem. Consequently, it breaks the electrolyte/catalyst/CO2 triphase interface and lowers the FECO. Herein, the combined inarching of amino-substituted cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc-NH2) and octadecylamine (ODA) onto the surface of the CNT via an amide bond was designed and fabricated. The obtained composite catalyst, labeled as CoPc-CNT-ODA, shows atomically dispersed metal active sites endowed with superior and stable hydrophobicity. When applied to CO2RR in a flow cell, the CoPc-CNT-ODA electrode displays a high CO faradic efficiency (FECO) of 97.7% and a partial current density (jCO) of 154.8 mA·cm–2 at an applied potential of −1.0 V (vs RHE). Moreover, the FECO values are all above 90% from −0.8 to −1.2 V (vs RHE). Even after electrolyzing at −1.0 V for 12 h, the FECO still remains at 88.3%, implying the superior stability of the CoPc-CNT-ODA electrode. The proposed methodology for GDE/catalyst improvement can be extended to other triphase interfaces involved in catalytic systems.

Magnetic metal-organic nanotubes: An adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of polychlorinated biphenyls from environmental and biological samples

Qiu-Lin Li,Lei-Lei Wang,Xia Wang,Ming-Lin Wang,Ru-Song Zhao

A new type of three-dimensional, echinus-like magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @ cobalt(Ⅱ)-based metal-organic nanotube (Fe 3 O 4 @ Co-MONT) yolk-shell microspheres, have been designed and synthesized for the first time. Fe 3 O 4 @ Co-MONTs yolk-shell microspheres were characterized by scanning electron micrographs, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The feasibility of the new material for use as an absorbent was investigated for magnetic solid phase-extraction (MSPE) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from environmental water samples and biological samples. The Plackett-Burman design and Box-Behnken design were used to determine and optimize the extraction parameters influencing the extraction efficiency through response surface methodology. Under the optimized conditions, the developed method showed good linearity within the range of 5–1000   ng   L −1 , low limits of detection (0.31–0.49   ng   L −1 ), and good reproducibility (RSD   <   10%). The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of PCBs in real environmental water samples. These results demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 @ Co-MONTs is a promising adsorbent material for the MSPE of PCBs at trace levels from environmental water samples and biological samples.

Enhanced CO2 hydrate formation via biopromoter coupled with initial stirring activation

Yongtao Zhang,Fulin Chen,Yan He,Fei Wang

CO 2 sequestration based on hydrate technology is considered to be the most promising long-term CO 2 sequestration technology. In this study, a method of using initial stirring to activate CO 2 hydrate formation process was proposed in the aim of saving energy and avoiding the problem of stirring shaft stuck, where the stirring only played a role in activating hydrate formation process. Two amino acids, l -Methionine and d -leucine, were chosen as promoters for improving the formation kinetics of CO 2 hydrates, and l -Methionine presents better than d -leucine. When the concentration of l -methionine solution is equal to or greater than 4 mmol/L, even with the initial stirring of 10 rpm within 8 min, T 90 can be shortened to close to or less than 40 min with a high gas consumption of more than 7.3 mmol gas/mL water, where the promoting effect is similar to the condition of continuous stirring of about 100 min, indicating that about 90 % of the energy consumed for mechanical stirring can be saved. Moreover, an interesting phenomenon was observed that CO 2 hydrates firstly nucleated inside the l -methionine solution, and a large number of small hydrate floccules rapidly formed and filled the entire solution under the action of magnetic stirring, which proved the instantaneous excitation effect of stirring on hydrate formation. This work contributes to rethinking the promoting roles of stirring and promoters in CO 2 hydrate formation.

Highly flexible, core-shell heterostructured, and visible-light-driven titania-based nanofibrous membranes for antibiotic removal and E. coil inactivation

Jun Song,Xiaohui Wu,Meng Zhang,Cheng Liu,Jianyong Yu,Gang Sun,Yang Si,Bin Ding

Functional semiconductor nanomaterials modified TiO 2 fibrous membranes with desirable heterostructures, good mechanical properties, and superior visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity would have broad applications in environmental remediation; however, constructing such fantastic fibrous membranes still remains an enormous challenge. Herein, we fabricated a soft and heterostructured g-C 3 N 4 @Co-TiO 2 (CNCT) nanofibrous membranes by a facile electrospinning approach and subsequent thermal polymerization process. The ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 nanoshell was in situ synthesized and uniformly wrapped onto Co-TiO 2 nanofiber to form core-shell quantum heterojunction , and the thickness and loading amount of g-C 3 N 4 nanoshell can be precisely controlled through simply regulating the content of precursor (melamine). Benefiting from the three-dimensional porous networks, enhanced visible-light response, and the effective charge transfer induced by uniform and compact heterojunction, the as-synthesized CNCT membranes exhibited a prominent photodegradation efficiency of 90.8% within 60 min towards tetracycline hydrochloride, and also displayed excellent antibacterial performance with a 6 log inactivation of E. coil after 90 min visible light exposure. Moreover, the stable core-shell structures and robust mechanical strength also endow the membranes with favorable reversibility and easy-recycling ability. This study may open up new avenues for designing and constructing flexible high-performance photocatalytic membranes for water purification.

Preparation and Characterization of Poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide-co-ε-caprolactone)/1,4-Butanediamine Modified Maleated Poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) Blend Porous Films

Dan Wang,Jianjun Fang,Wenjuan Liu,Tianlong Huang,Yanmin Zhao,Jianglong Duan,Hailin Xie,Ping Chen,Ziwei Zhou,Zhihua Zhou

Poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLLGC) and 1,4-butanediamine modified maleated poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (BMPLGA) were both synthesized by ring-opening polymerization with stannous octoate as catalyst. Then PLLGC/BMPLGA blend porous films were prepared by using NaCl particles as a porogen through a solvent casting/particle leaching method. The PLLGC/BMPLGA blend porous films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and scanning electron microscopy. The tensile properties of the PLLGC/BMPLGA porous films were also studied. The results showed that the content and size of the NaCl porogens had significant effects on the porosity of the PLLGC/BMPLGA porous films. The tensile strength and elongation percentage of the porous films decreased with increasing porogen content. Thus, both the pore structure and mechanical properties of the porous PLLGC/BMPLGA blend films can be controlled by changing the amount and size of the porogen.

In-Vitro Degradation Behaviors of Composite Scaffolds Based on Poly(Lactide-co-Glycolide-co-ε-Caprolactone), 1,4-Butanediamine Modified Poly(Lactide-co-Glycolide) and Bioceramics

Yun Ou,Wei Wu,Zhihua Zhou

In this work a novel type of composite scaffolds based on poly(lactide-co-glycolide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLLGC), 1,4-butanediamine modified poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (BMPLGA), nanobioactive glass (NBAG) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) were fabricated by using a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. The in-vitro degradation behaviors were investigated by immersing the scaffolds in phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH = 7.27) solution at 37 °C for 40 days. The properties, including the PBS pH value change and the water uptake, mass loss and morphology changes of the composite scaffolds, were investigated by comparing with pure PLLGC/BMPLGA scaffolds. The introduction of NBAG and β-TCP nanoparticles decreased the degradation rate of the PLLGC/BMPLGA matrix and improved the wetting behavior. The decrease in the degradation rate of the composite scaffolds correlated well with the results obtained from mass loss, water uptake and pH measurements. The degradation rate of the PLLGC/BMPLGA polymer in the composite scaffolds decreased as a result of the alkaline effect of the NBAG and β-TCP particles, with the OH- ions formed neutralizing acidic polymeric degradation products and binding the H+ ions from the tissue fluids.

Nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen co-doped carbon-armored Co/Co9S8 rods (Co/Co9S8@N-S-O-C) as efficient activator of peroxymonosulfate for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Shizong Wang,Haiyang Liu,Jianlong Wang

In this study, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen co-doped carbon armored cobalt sulfide (Co/Co 9 S 8 @N-S-O-C) composite was synthesized, characterized and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). SMX (0.04 mM) can be completely degraded within 20 min in the presence of 0.8 mM PMS and 0.1 g/L Co/Co 9 S 8 @N-S-O-C composite. The first-order kinetics constant of SMX degradation was 0.307 min -1 , and the mineralization of SMX was 30.1 %. The Quenching experiments of the free radicals and the identification of degradation products demonstrated that sulfate radicals played a dominant role in SMX degradation. The degradation rate of SMX increased with temperature, and activation energy was calculated to be 48.6 kJ/mol. The degradation rate of SMX increased firstly then decreased with increase of pH. Chloridion and humic acid decreased the degradation rate of SMX no matter what their initial concentration was. The effect of carbonate on SMX degradation depended on its initial concentration. Co/Co 9 S 8 @N-S-O-C composite showed good stability, the removal efficiency of SMX was 98.4 % in the fifth experiment. Based on the characterization results of the catalyst before and after use, it was concluded that cobalt, sulfur, pyridnic N and graphitic N were responsible for PMS activation.

Multi-stimuli-responsive poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-N-vinyl pyrrolidone-co-methacrylic acid-co-N-isopropylacryl amide) hydrogel: synthesis, characterization and application in drug release

Yang Xiaoli,Wang Kunyan,Yan Lei,Yu QiNing,Xia Hongxia,Liu Yanbo,Yan Chengjun

Multi-stimuli-responsive hydrogels are being increasingly studied due to their sensitive response to small stimuli and wide applications in biosensors and drug delivery. In this study, a multi-stimuli-responsive hydrogel, poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate- co - N -vinyl pyrrolidone- co -methacrylic acid- co - N -isopropylacryl amide) [poly(HEMA- co -NVP- co -MAA- co -NIPA)], was synthesized by radical polymerization and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 13 C NMR spectroscopy techniques. With the aids of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization, it was confirmed that the sensitive stimuli-responsive behavior of the hydrogel stemmed from its microstructure variation with those external stimulus. Rheological study showed that the hydrogel had rheological feature of typical elastomer. Compression tests revealed that the poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate- co - N -vinyl pyrrolidone) [poly(HEMA- co -NVP)] played an important role in enhancing the compressive modulus of such hydrogel. More interestingly, the equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) studies further confirmed that the composite hydrogel displayed response sensitively to the stimulus of temperature, pH, and ionic strength. Herein, theophylline as a drug model was adopted due to the multi-stimulus properties of hydrogels, which were a potential candidate for drug loading and delivering. Releasing drug continuously in a given period was dependent on the characteristics of solution and loading time. The mechanisms for drug release from the hydrogels were studied by Ritger–Peppas model.

Electronic Metal–Support Interactions between Pt Nanoparticles and Co(OH)2 Flakes for CO Oxidation

Xueyang Song,Li Huang,Wenxue He,Chengyong Liu,Fengchun Hu,Yong Jiang,Zhihu Sun,Shiqiang Wei

Electronic metal–support interactions (EMSIs) have opened a new way to tailor the electronic and catalytic properties of supported catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the EMSIs between Pt nanoparticles and Co(OH)2 flakes grown on SiO2 and show its beneficial effect on enhancing the CO oxidation activity. The EMSI characteristics of the Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 catalyst are identified by in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and transmission electron microscopy. Quantitative XAFS analysis reveals the presence of metallic-like Pt–Co bonds. The formation of Pt–Co intermetallic bonds allows for electron donation form Co to Pt, leading to the negative charging of the Pt atoms as evidenced by reduced Pt 2p-to-5d electron-transition intensity detected by XAFS spectroscopy and the emergence of a CO adsorption band at 2063 cm–1 in DRIFTS. The significance of EMSIs is manifested by comparing the CO oxidation activity over the Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 and Pt/SiO2 catalysts with similar Pt loadings. Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 is superior to Pt/SiO2 in both the apparent activation energy (19 vs 64 kJ/mol) and the turnover frequency (0.03 vs 0.003 s–1 at 37 °C). The enhanced activity is attributed to the negative charging of Pt, which downshifts the d-band center and reduces the CO adsorption strength.

Preparation of C and Co co-doped TiO2 Nanomaterials for Visible-Light Photocatalytic Antibacterial Activity

Meng Chunhui,Li Yuena,He Qitong,Hao Yue,Yin Wenjun,Zhou Huang,Li Ping

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 )-mediated photodynamic therapy has emerged as a promising antibacterial strategy. To further enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 , we have rationally designed cobalt-doped TiO 2 nanocomposites (C/Co/TiO 2-x ) via a sol–gel synthesis approach. The synthesized materials were systematically characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS). Structural analyses confirmed the presence of Ti, O, C, and Co elements, exhibiting a block-like morphology with a dominant anatase crystalline phase. Notably, the optimized material exhibits an extended visible-light absorption edge (762 nm) accompanied by a reduced band gap (1.63 eV), demonstrating significantly enhanced visible-light harvesting efficiency. Antibacterial evaluations revealed that the C/Co/TiO 2-x nanocomposite (5 mg/mL) achieved complete inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) within 60 and 100 min, respectively, under visible-light irradiation (7 W LED). Radical trapping experiments identified photogenerated holes (h + ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) as the predominant reactive species responsible for bacterial inactivation. In vitro cytotoxicity assessment demonstrated excellent biocompatibility of the material. This study successfully illustrates the synthesis of C/Co/TiO 2-x nanocomposites, which exhibit promising potential for antibacterial applications.

Decarbonylation of Fatty Acids to Alkenes over Co-N-C Catalysts Derived from Co Complexes

Canyang Zhang,Yin Liang,Chao Chen,Wei Zhao,Bolong Li,Jianghao Wang,Zhenyu Zhang,Huiping Ji,Feng Zhou,Kaige Wang,Reinout Meijboom,Jie Fu

The decarbonylation of biomass-derived fatty acids (CnH2n+1COOH) presents a sustainable method for producing high-value alkenes (CnH2n). However, the development of efficient and highly selective catalysts for fatty acid decarbonylation remains challenging. In this work, we prepared a series of CoPhPhen/MWCNT-X catalysts by pyrolyzing a 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (PhPhen) Co complex immobilized on multi-walled carbon nanotubes. In the model decarbonylation reaction of stearic acid, the optimized CoPhPhen/MWCNT-900 catalyst demonstrated remarkable catalytic efficacy, with 81.6% conversion of stearic acid and 58.3% yield of heptadecene. Characterization and comparative experiments demonstrated that the substantial phenyl groups in the PhPhen ligand engage in strong π-π interactions with the MWCNT, effectively inhibiting the migration and aggregation of cobalt single atoms during pyrolysis and thus maintaining a high density of active Co single-atom sites. Further electronic structure investigation revealed that the local electron density around the cobalt species markedly rises with higher pyrolysis temperatures, and this electronic impact exhibits a distinct positive association with the decarbonylation performance of catalysts. In situ DRIFTS was employed to reveal the adsorption and reaction process of fatty acids on the Co single-atom active sites: The fatty acid molecule first coordinates to the cobalt center via the carbonyl oxygen, followed by successive dehydration and decarbonylation processes, finally yielding H2O, CO, and olefins.
