Determination of cesium ion in soybean oil is of high importance since the increasing risk from releasing of main component of nuclear waste cesium 137. The complex composition and high viscosity of soybean oil make it necessary to convert it into water phase by nitration before detection, so developing a simple, accurate and sensitive method for on-site sensing of Cs + in soybean oil is still a big challenge. In this work, we report a traffic light-type ratiometric fluorescence strategy for the visual sensing of Cs + in soybean oil based on dimensional regulation of two dimensional (PEA) 2 PbI 4 perovskite nanosheets (NSs). The PEA + in (PEA) 2 PbI 4 NSs exchanged with Cs + and lead to dimension of partial (PEA) 2 PbI 4 NSs progressively increase from 2D to 3D CsPbI 3 NCs. Resultantly, the fluorescence of (PEA) 2 PbI 4 NSs decreases with a concomitant fluorescence enhancement of CsPbI 3 NCs upon increasing the concentrations of Cs + , and the emission accordingly change from green, yellow to red with a high fluorescence colorimetric resolution up to 5.0 μM, make it successful to achieve on-site sensing of Cs + in soybean oil just with naked eye in 5 min without any nitration, demonstrating a bright application future for determination of Cs + in the soybean oil.

Wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and density functional theory (DFT) were employed to study the structures of aqueous 18-crown-6/CsCl solutions with CsCl concentrations of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mol·L -1 . The empirical potential structure refinement (EPSR) modelling was adopted to get the pair distribution functions (PDFs), coordination numbers ( CN ), coordination number distributions (CND), angle distribution functions (ADFs), independent gradient model (IGM) and spatial density functions (SDFs) for the 18-crown-6 hydration, the complexation of 18-crown-6 and Cs + , the hydration of 18-crown-6/Cs + complex, and the association of Cl - and 18-crown-6/Cs + complex. Judging from the distance and orientation of water molecules, and the IGM between 18-crown-6 and water molecules, the oxygen atoms of 18-crown-6 (Oc) and the hydrogen atoms of water molecules (Hw) form strong hydrogen bonds, and these water molecules were distributed on both sides of the 18-crown-6 ring plane. However, the hydrogen atoms of 18-crown-6 (Hc) hardly form hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atoms of water molecules (Ow). Cs + is located directly above the 18-crown-6 ring plane of 0.35 to 2.05 Å away from the centroid of 18-crown-6, and forms 18-crown-6/Cs + complex with six Oc at r Cs + - O c = 3.06 Å. When the concentrations of CsCl are 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mol·L -1 , the complexation percentage of 18-crown-6 to Cs + are about 100%, 58% and 54%, respectively. No classic 2:1 “sandwich” 18-crown-6/Cs + complex structure was found in the solutions we surveyed. Both interaction energies and solvation stability energies reveal that the hydrates of 18-crown-6/Cs + complexes were formed in aqueous solutions. Cs + uncomplexed with 18-crown-6 hydrates with eight water molecules in aqueous solution, while Cs + can also hydrate with about four water molecules when it complexes with 18-crown-6. The results of atomic pair distances, the dipole distance of water molecules, the SDF and the IGM indicate that although water molecules can be located on both sides of the 18-crown-6 ring plane when the hydrates are formed, they hydrate with Cs + on the side where Cs + only existed. Cs + of 18-crown-6/Cs + complex associates with Cl - with the r Cs + - Cl - = 3.79 Å by electrostatic attraction.

All-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been widely used in many fields due to their excellent photoelectric properties. However, the instability of their structure and the high lead content need to be solved. Herein, the concept of “High-entropy” is introduced into NCs to prepare High-entropy perovskite Cs(Pb 1/3 Mn 1/3 Ni 1/3 )Br 3 NCs by high-energy ball milling method. The effects of milling time and doping ratio of B-site elements on the structure and performance of perovskite NCs are studied. It is found that Mn 2+ and Ni 2+ successfully enter the lattice of Pb 2+ to form “High-entropy” perovskite NCs. In addition, compared with Cs(Pb 0.72 Mn 0.14 Ni 0.14 )Br 3 NCs, Cs(Pb 1/3 Mn 1/3 Ni 1/3 )Br 3 NCs have greater luminous intensity and stability, which because of the enhancement of band gap and valence bonds. Furthermore, photoluminescence intensity at 515 nm increase obviously when Cs(Pb 1/3 Mn 1/3 Ni 1/3 )Br 3 NCs are heated at 120 °C. This is due to the lattice distortion effect brought about by ion doping. This study is expected to provide an effective way for synthesis and stability of all-inorganic perovskite NCs doped with more kinds of different ions. Moreover, it also lays the foundation for the introduction of “High-entropy” into perovskite functional ceramics.

The radioactive Rb + , Cs + and Sr 2+ have serious threat for the aquatic life and human health, its removal has been granted increasing concern. Hence the adsorbent with excellent adsorption performance and favourable reusability is strongly demanded. This work prepared a novel porous polymer of chitosan- g -polyacrylamide (CTS- g -PAM) by grafting the acrylamide (AM) onto the chitosan (CTS) with sufficient pore structure via an eco-friendly surfactant-free (corn oil)-in-water Pickering medium internal phase emulsion (O/W Pickering MIPE), solely stabilized by CTS. Interestingly, its pore structure could be tuned by varying the emulsion character via changing the molecular weight and concentration of CTS, as well as the pH values. Due to the abundant –COO − and −NH 2 functional groups in the porous material of CTS- g -PAM, the high adsorption capacities of 195.43, 237.44 and 185.63 mg/g for Rb + , Cs + and Sr 2+ could be reached within 40, 30 and 20 min, respectively. Moreover, the CTS- g -PAM had excellent regeneration ability and reusability. Herein, we provided a feasible and low-cost pathway for preparation of the porous adsorbent with tunable porous structure for adsorption and separation application.

Developing effective adsorbents for 137 Cs removal from complex wastewater systems has been a significant challenge. Although existing spheres adsorbents could improve the post-separation ability and practical operability, the adsorption kinetics are still significantly retarded due to the large intra-particle diffusion resistance. Here, we demonstrate the efficiency of a robust Prussian blue analogue/polyvinyl chloride composite membrane (PPM), which was easily prepared by a simple solvent evaporation method. In virtue of the less dense layer and ion-sieving functionality, it showed enhanced kinetics (5 h) and super selectivity ( S F = 248.3–5388.6) towards Cs + . New PPM was robust within a wide pH range (2–10) and exhibited favorable removal capacity (152.8 mg/g), placing it at an outstanding material for Cs + removal among other adsorbents. Moreover, PPM could be simply eluted and reused using a KCl solution as eluent. A study of the adsorption mechanism confirmed an ion-exchange action during the removal process. Thus, PPM is considered to be a promising candidate for the removal of Cs + from multicomponent aqueous solutions

Core–shell structured cellulose acetate-polycaprolactone/chitosan (CA-PCL/CS) composite nanofibers were electrospun via coaxial electrospinning. Different solvents were used in core solutions, which led to different electrical conductivities in core solutions. The effect of the electrical conductivity on the morphology and structure of core–shell fibers was studied emphatically. As shown in the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, the increasing electrical conductivity of core solutions would result in smaller diameter ratios of core to shell, thinner overall diameters and more inhomogeneous diameter distributions. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) all demonstrated that the interactions between cores and shells weakened with the increase of electrical conductivity of core solutions, and this might lead to different diameter ratios of cores to shells in the fibers. The results provide a basis for further design and optimization of processing conditions to control the nanostructure of core–shell composite nanofibers.

Pathogens and pests pose significant threats to global crop productivity and plant immunity, necessitating urgent measures from researchers to prevent pathogen contamination and pest damage to crops. A natural plant-based antibacterial agent, eugenol (EUG), has demonstrated excellent antimicrobial and insect repellent capabilities, but the characteristics of volatilization and poor dissolution limit the practical application. The nanoization of pesticide formulations holds promise in the development of highly effective pesticides for antibacterial and insecticidal purposes. Herein, a eugenol-loaded nano delivery system (EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS) was synthesized using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as a functional monomer to connect carrier core structure carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with shell structure chitosan (CS), and EUG was encapsulated within the carrier. EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS demonstrated excellent leaf affinity, with minimum contact angles (CAs) of 37.83 and 70.52° on hydrophilic and hydrophobic vegetable leaf surfaces, respectively. Moreover, the maximum liquid holding capacity (LHC) of EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic vegetable leaf surfaces demonstrates a noteworthy 55.24% enhancement compared to the LHC of pure EUG. The in vitro release curve of EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS exhibited an initial burst followed by stable sustained release. It is with satisfaction that the nano delivery system demonstrated exceptional antibacterial properties against S. aureus and satisfactory insecticidal efficacy against Spodoptera litura. The development of this eugenol-loaded nano delivery system holds significant potential for enhanced antibacterial and insect repellents in agriculture, paving the way for the application of volatile bioactive substances.

The blended membranes of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) (PVA-CS) were prepared for pervaporation dehydration of a binary system of n -butyl acetate/water and a ternary mixture of n -butyl acetate/ n -butanol/water. Membranes were characterized by FTIR, DSC and XRD to investigate the intermolecular interactions, the blending compatibility and the effects of blending on crystallinity. Tensile strengths were measured to determine the influence of blending ratios on the membrane’s mechanical properties. The membrane’s degree of swelling in water dropped significantly with increasing CS fraction. The results agreed well with the calculation of the solubility parameter. Separation factor and permeation flux increased when the temperature was raised for both the binary and ternary pervaporation systems. An optimal separation factor of 27,000 with a total flux of 402 g·m −2 ·h −1 was obtained using the blend membrane containing 25 wt% CS at 40 °C for the binary system. For the ternary system, the maximum separation factor and total flux were obtained for blend membranes at 75 wt% and 50 wt% CS content, respectively.

Due to their unique physicochemical properties, carbon nanochips (CNCs) have been used for studies of the direct electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of oxidoreductase. In this report, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with CNCs, and glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized on the modified electrode surface. Chitosan (CS) was employed to fix the GOx/CNCs tightly to the surface of the GCE. Characterization of the modified electrode by SEM, TEM, and FT-IR showed that GOx remained in its native structure when immobilized in CNC film. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and linear sweep voltammetry studies showed that direct electrochemical and bioelectrocatalytic activities of GOx were achieved and that the presence of CNCs enhanced the electrochemical response of GOx. Glucose had a linear current response from 0 to 1.9 mM, with a detection limit of 0.16 mM and an apparent Michaelis–Menten constant of 0.15 mM. The polarization curve of the biofuel cell revealed that the bioanode afforded an open circuit voltage of 0.59 V, maximum power density of 55 μW cm−2, and maximum current density of 434 μA cm−2. These results establish that the direct immobilization of protein onto the CNC surface can be used to achieve direct electron transfer of other redox enzymes. Furthermore, the findings provide a new perspective toward understanding the kinetics and thermodynamics of biological redox processes.

In this work, multifunctional polystyrene@chitosan@gold nanoparticles–Fe3O4 nanoparticles–folic acid/indocyanine green (PS@CS@Au–Fe3O4–FA/ICG) nanocomposites that can integrate diagnosis and therapy into one nanoplatform was fabricated. The constructed PS@CS@Au–Fe3O4–FA/ICG nanocomposites possessed excellent computed tomography, magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging performances which could be used to diagnose tumor and monitor the nanocomposites’ localization in vivo. Moreover, PS@CS@Au–Fe3O4–FA/ICG nanocomposites can be delivered in a targeted manner to cancer cells by folic acid in a receptor-mediated way, and tumor growth could be efficiently inhibited, even completely ablated, under NIR irradiation. That is, the constructed PS@CS@Au–Fe3O4–FA/ICG nanocomposites had great potential for computed tomography, magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging performances, which could be used to diagnose tumors and to monitor local therapy and fluorescence imaging-guided targeted therapy of cancer cells using nanocomposites.

Novel magnetic and fluorescent CS–Fe3O4@CdSeS nanoparticles (MF-CSNPs) were synthesized by incorporating Fe3O4–chitosan nanoparticles and mercaptopropionic acid capped alloyed CdSeS quantum dots into a chitosan matrix via an electrostatic interaction. The structure and properties of these novel MF-CSNPs were characterized by UV-visible, FL, XRD, ICP-AES, VSM and TEM. MF-CSNPs are found to adsorb copper ions with a high saturation adsorption capacity of 260 mg g−1, above 95.0 wt% of the copper ions can be enriched and removed from aqueous systems in minutes by manipulating the MF-CSNPs with an external magnetic field. The fluorescence signals of the MF-CSNPs could be quenched effectively by the adsorbed copper ions. Linear relationships are established between the relative fluorescence intensity of the MF-CSNPs and the concentration of copper ions. The linear range and limit of detection for copper ions depend on the concentration of MF-CSNPs. The linear range varies in the concentration range of 0.21–80 μg L−1 or 0.40–700 μg L−1, with the lowest limit of detection of 0.022 μg L−1 being calculated after enrichment. Trace copper ions in water can be simultaneously removed and determined using MF-CSNPs.

This study prepares a series of hollow-structured CS/SA/POSS composite gel spheres with a diameter of ~2.5 mm by using hydrophilic Janus-type polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (AS-POSS) as a crosslinking agent in combination with sodium alginate and chitosan via electrostatic adsorption/free radical polymerization. As the content of POSS increases, the wall thickness of the gel spheres also increases from 20 to 30 μm, leading to a more compact and smooth wall structure in the polymerized CS/SA/POSS composite gel spheres. Additionally, the introduction and polymerization of POSS significantly enhance the stability, drug loading rate, and entrapment rate of the gel spheres, providing them with improved drug release capabilities. For hydrophilic drug doxorubicin, the loading rate and encapsulation rate reach 41.2% and 79.9%, respectively, while for the hydrophobic drug ibuprofen, they are 14.7% and 76.3%. Compared to some previously reported drug-loaded gel materials, the gels prepared in this study demonstrate relatively higher drug loading performance. Thus, these hollow-structured CS/SA/POSS composite gel spheres hold promise as innovative drug carriers in the biomedical field.
