Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to methanol by Cu2O/SiC nanocrystallite under visible light irradiation

Huiling Li,Yonggen Lei,Ying Huang,Yueping Fang,Yuehua Xu,Li Zhu,Xin Li

The Cu 2 O/SiC photocatalyst was obtained from SiC nanoparticles (NPs) modified by Cu 2 O. Their photocatalytic activities for reducing CO 2 to CH 3 OH under visible light irradiation have been investigated. The results indicated that besides a small quantity of 6H-SiC, SiC NPs mainly consisted of 3C-SiC. The band gaps of SiC and Cu 2 O were estimated to be about 1.95 and 2.23 eV from UV-Vis spectra, respectively. The Cu 2 O modification can enhance the photocatalytic performance of SiC NPs, and the largest yields of methanol on SiC, Cu 2 O and Cu 2 O/SiC photocatalysts under visible light irradiation were 153, 104 and 191 μmol/g, respectively.

Promotion of Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 over Cu2O-Cu (111) Interface Assisted by Oxygen Vacancies

Shuang Xu,Lei Yang,Congya Wang,Liwei Pan,Jing Zhang,Yaling Wang,Hexiang Zhong

With the rapid development of industry, large-scale fossil energy consumption leads to the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration and the resultant deteriorating global warming. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERCO2) technology is a potential strategy to achieve the CO2 emissions reduction and to realize carbon recycling. However, the lack of high product selective, active and stable catalysts is one of the remaining challenges for the industrial applications of ERCO2. Herein, an electrochemical oxidation-reduction reconstruction method is developed to reconstruct the copper network without extra Cu salt addition obtaining Cu2O-Cu (111) catalysts with nanoporous structures for improving the selectivity and activity of CH4 and C2H4 product. The oxidation-reduction reconstruction derived catalyst achieves improved faradaic efficiency of 56.63% for CH4 product and a partial current density of 41.6 mA cm-2 at -1.38 V (vs. RHE). The selectivity and activity toward C2H4 are also improved. The catalytic superiority originates from synergistic interplay between the Cu₂O-Cu heterogeneous interface and high electrochemical active surface area. Additionally, the presence of abundant oxygen vacancies at the Cu2O-Cu interface accelerate the electron transfer process and promote the high selectivity and activity toward CO2-to-CH4. This study paves a new way for enhancing the selectivity and activity of CO2 electrocatalytic conversion to CH4.

Snowflake-Like Cu2O-Pt Nanocluster Mediated Fenton Photothermal and Chemodynamic for Antibiotic Wound Healing Therapy

En Li,Qi Han,Ting Chen,Si Cheng,Jinghua Li

TheFenton reaction serves as the fundamental mechanism behind chemodynamic therapy (CDT), wherein highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are produced to efficiently induce bacterial cell death. On the other hand, photothermal therapy (PTT) utilizes photosensitizers to absorb specific wavelengths of light, generating localized heat that disrupts bacterial cell membranes, leading to bactericidal effects. In this study, platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) were successfully doped onto the surface of hexapodal cuprous oxide (HCu₂O), resulting in the synthesis of hexapodal snowflake-like Cu2O-Pt nanoparticles (HCPNLs). These HCPNLs synergistically combine the mechanisms of CDT and PTT, significantly enhancing antibacterial efficacy. In vitro antimicrobial experiments have demonstrated that HCPNLs exhibit strong antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli). Additionally, HCPNLs effectively disrupted biofilm formation and improved tissue penetration. In a murine model of mixed bacterial infection, HCPNLs showed excellent synergistic antimicrobial effects, significantly promoting wound healing with minimal toxicity. Overall, the unique properties of HCPNLs provide a novel option for non-resistant antimicrobial therapy in biomedical applications.

Ziwen Xia,Weiye Yang,Hongyan Peng,Shihua Zhao

A B S T R A C T Photocatalysis is gaining increasing attention due to its potential applications in various fields and simple, environmentally friendly production technologies. In this study, hollow pencil-like Y 2 O 3 was synthesized using a hydrothermal method, and Cu 2 O was coated onto the surface of Y 2 O 3 through a chemical precipitation method, resulting in a hollow pencil-like Y 2 O 3 /Cu 2 O composite heterojunction structure. The hollow pencil-like morphology provides a larger specific surface area, and the inherent band offset facilitates the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. The Y 2 O 3 /Cu 2 O composite material was used as a catalyst to degrade methyl orange (MO) under xenon lamp irradiation, achieving a degradation efficiency of over 95% within 2 hours. After five cycles, the photocatalytic efficiency remained above 80%, indicating that the material exhibits high photocatalytic activity and good stability. Moreover, studies demonstrate that the Y 2 O 3 /Cu 2 O composite material exhibits superior photocatalytic efficiency compared to Cu 2 O particles, providing valuable insights for future research in related fields.

Cu/Cu2O@polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotube conductive hydrogel for chloride ion removal in capacitive deionization

Fei Yu,Tianjie Chen,Jie Ma

Cu 2 O, as a cost-effective chloride ion (Cl − ) storage electrode material, has shown great potential in Cl − removal applications. However, in the electrochemical process, Cu 2 O as the anode is easily oxidized and dissolved by free copper ions (Cu 2+ ), leading to the loss of copper components and causing electrode performance degradation. In this work, we introduced a three-dimensional (3D) self-supporting polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotube (PVA/CNTs) conductive hydrogel as the carrier of Cu 2 O for capacitive deionization (CDI). Among them, PVA acts as an antioxidant to inhibit the conversion of Cu 2 O to free Cu 2+ , CNTs act as the growth carrier of copper particles to make them more evenly distributed in the electrode materials, and the 3D hydrogel structure can accommodate a large amount of water, making Cu 2 O fully contact with chloride ions in water and store them. At 1.4 V, the Cu/Cu 2 O@PVA/CNTs conductive hydrogels (Cu@CHs) demonstrate 49.58 ± 3.27 mg g −1 Cl − storage capacity and significantly superior areal Cl − storage capacity on the 13.66 ± 0.68 mg-Cl − cm −2 , and there was no significant performance degradation in 100 cycles. This study, using PVA as the core component, proposes a simple strategy for constructing high areal performance 3D materials and provides optimization ideas for solving the oxidation dissolution problem of faradaic materials in the CDI process.

Flexible Cu2O-Cu co-doped carbon nanofibrous membrane for efficient solar-driven clean water production

Wanlong Li,Yuqing Ren,Quan Feng,Xianhong Zheng,Xiangyun Zhou,Jianghui Zhao,Zhi Liu

Flexibility is critical to the dimensional stability of photothermal materials during sustainable solar water evaporation. Herein, a flexible Cu 2 O-Cu co-doped carbon (Cu 2 O-Cu@C) nanofibrous membrane was fabricated by carbonization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/Cu(CH 3 COO) 2 nanofiber membrane at 400 °C. This process transformed Cu(CH 3 COO) 2 into a mixture of Cu 2 O and Cu. The Cu 2 O-Cu@C membrane achieved a significantly enhanced stress at break of 3.95 MPa—a 14.6-fold enhancement over pure carbon membranes (0.27 MPa). Moreover, the membrane exhibited excellent flexibility, as it recovered its original shape within 40 ms after folding and maintained its dimensional integrity throughout 1000 bending cycles. Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that Cu 2 O-Cu co-doping dramatically improves mechanical properties by (1) increasing density, which enhances structural densification, (2) introducing new interatomic energy contributions that strengthen interfacial interactions, and (3) improving stress transfer and crack inhibition to promote external force dissipation. Under one sun illumination, the Cu 2 O-Cu@C nanofibrous membrane achieved evaporation rates of 1.57 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for 3.5 % saline water and 1.61 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for actual dye wastewater. In addition, following hydrophilic hydrogel modification, the Cu 2 O-Cu@C membrane maintained a stable evaporation rate exceeding 1.76 kg·m −2 ·h −1 during 10-h indoor tests. It also showed no salt crystallization in outdoor testing, confirming its salt resistance and long-term stability for practical applications. These findings will encourage research aimed at enhancing the mechanical properties of PAN-based carbon nanofibers, which are intended for applications in flexible photothermal evaporators, wearable electronics, and related devices.

NIR-induced label-free subcutaneous PEC biosensor UC@Cu2O@TiO2 for detection of L-cysteine

Changqiu Ma,Daheng Jiang,Linghui Zeng,Lixin Zhu,Xiaoliang Xu

Conventional photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors based on ZnO and TiO2 face challenges in applications in vivo due to the poor penetration of excitation light through the skin. To address this limitation, we designed a novel near-infrared (NIR)-driven FTO@UC@Cu2O@TiO2 heterojunction biosensor for subcutaneous L-cysteine detection. NIR light penetrates the skin and excites the upconversion material (called UC for short, NaYF4:Er, Yb), which emits visible light at 540 nm. This emission activates the Cu2O semiconductor to generate photocurrent. The Cu2O@TiO2 heterojunction facilitates charge carrier separation and suppresses electron-hole recombination. The biosensor demonstrates stable, sensitive, and reproducible detection of L-cysteine over a range of 10 μM to 10 pM, with a detection limit of 5.2 pM. Notably, it also enables subcutaneous detection covering a range from 10 μM to 100 pM, with a detection limit of 74 pM. These results provide a promising strategy for real-time in situ monitoring of L-cysteine in clinical applications.

Synergistic Cu2O@Ni(OH)2 Core–Shell Electrocatalyst for High-Efficiency Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Zunjie Zhang,Bingcheng Ge,Mengran Liu,Tianfang Yang,Shuaitong Wang,Yang Liu,Yingjie Yang,Shuyan Gao

The electrocatalytic reduction reaction of nitrate (NO3RR) is anticipated to convert nitrogen-containing pollutants into valuable ammonia products. Copper-based catalysts have received great attention because of their good performance in the NO3RR due to the strong binding energy with *NO3 intermediates. However, the poor H2O dissociation ability of Cu is unable to provide H• in time for the hydrogenation reaction of NOx, thus hindering the electroreduction of the NO3–. Herein, we designed a shell–core nanocube electrocatalyst Cu2O@Ni(OH)2-x (x represents the molar ratio of Ni/Cu) using the liquid phase reduction combined with the etching and precipitation method for electrocatalytic NO3RR. Due to the synergistic effect between the strong nitrate activation ability of Cu and the excellent H2O dissociation ability of Ni(OH)2, Cu2O@Ni(OH)2-3.3% shows an impressive ammonia yield rate (557.9 μmol h–1 cm–2) and Faradaic efficiency (97.4%) at −0.35 V vs. RHE. Operando Raman and Auger electron spectroscopy observe the reduction of Cu2O to Cu during the NO3RR process. Density functional theory calculations combined with electron paramagnetic resonance analysis reveals that Ni(OH)2 can lower the activation energy barrier of H2O dissociation, thereby promoting the generation of H• and accelerating the hydrogenation of *NO during the NO3RR. This research provides an efficient Cu-based catalyst for reducing NO3– and may motivate the development of effective ammonia electrocatalysts for further experimentation.

Preparation of a Z-scheme BiVO4/Cu2O/PPy heterojunction and studying its CO2 reducing properties

Hengxin Ren,Xinyu Sun,Tong Li,Zhixin Ren,Chaoyu Song,Yuguang Lv,Ying Wang

Herein, a new Z-scheme BiVO4/Cu2O/PPy heterostructure photocatalyst was developed with bismuth nitrate and ammonium vanadate as the precursors and sodium dodecyl benzyl sulfonate as the soft template. Through the spatial confinement effect of the sodium dodecyl benzyl sulfonate soft template, peanut-like BiVO4 and the BiVO4/Cu2O/PPy heterojunction were synthesized. The best performance was observed for BiVO4/Cu2O/PPy (5%), and its photodegradation rate was 6.57 times higher than that of pure BiVO4. The mechanism study showed that a light hole (h+), superoxide radical (·O2−), and hydroxyl radical (·OH) participated in the CO2 reduction process, which was different from the pure BiVO4 reaction system. Therefore, the proposed approach provides a new method for applying BiVO4/Cu2O/PPy photocatalysts and developing the same type of heterojunction photocatalyst, and they have effective practical application for environmental remediation.

Photocatalysis in an evanescent field: an in situ approach to studying photocatalytic performance by tracing interfacial refractive index changes and kinetics

Yunyun Huang,Aoxiang Xiao,Guanhua Hou,Hongtao Li,Tuan Guo,Bai-Ou Guan

An in situ strategy to understand the photocatalytic performance of Cu2O–Ag@rGO nanocomposites through interfacial photocatalysis on an optical microfiber has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The photocatalysts were conjugated on the surface of an optical microfiber immersed in an organic solution, forming an interface consisting of photocatalysts and organic molecules between the silica microfiber and the solution, which was within the evanescent field of the optical microfiber. In the photocatalytic process, the decomposition of organics changed the refractive index (RI) of the interface. The interaction between the evanescent wave and the microfiber interface modulated its optical spectrum. Therefore, the optical microfiber monitored the photocatalytic performance of the photocatalysts in real-time and in situ. The results reveal that the photodegradation efficiency of Cu2O–Ag@rGO was almost twice that of Cu2O, while the degradation rate constant was more than five times larger, because the coupling between the silver nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) enhanced the photocatalytic performance of Cu2O. By taking advantage of its miniature size and mechanical flexibility, the microfiber can directly probe a real matrix to study the local photocatalytic performance. This strategy is suitable for the evaluation of most photocatalysts and might provide a new perspective to assess the photocatalytic performance of the catalysts.

Hollow cube-like CuS derived from Cu2O crystals for the highly efficient elimination of electromagnetic pollution

Xiaodong Sun,Xin Yuan,Xiaopeng Li,Ling Li,Qingfeng Song,Xuliang Lv,Guangxin Gu,Mingxu Sui

In this study, hollow cube-like CuS composites derived from Cu2O crystals were synthesized via a simple one-step reaction. The formation of hollow cavities can be explained through the Kirkendall-based process. The morphologies and electromagnetic absorption (EA) properties of the CuS were measured and investigated. A sample with 35 wt% hollow CuS loading paraffin-composite achieves an optimal reflection loss (RL) of −63.99 dB at 12.09 GHz under the thickness of 2.25 mm. Simultaneously, the effective EA bandwidth (RL ≤ −10 dB) can be tuned between 4.63 and 18.00 GHz by changing the thickness of the absorber from 1.5 mm to 4.0 mm. The excellent EA performance is attributed to the high dielectric loss, appropriate impedance matching and multiple reflections induced by the unique hollow cube-like structure. Thus the hollow cube-like CuS is expected to be a promising material in approaching for microwave absorption against the electromagnetic pollution.

Nanocavity-enriched Porous Cu2O Catalyst for Selective CO2 Reduction to Multicarbon Products through the Nanoconfinement Effect

Haiyu Wang,Yan Huang,Huamin Li,Haibin Wang,Kaili Yao,Tan Jing,Songhua Chen,Lihua Liu,Hongyan Liang

Incorporating a nanoporous surface and a nanocavity into an electrocatalytic platform increases the active surface area and local mass density. Construct of specialized geometrical structures that are protected from harsh electrochemical environments is critical, albeit challenging, for improving the catalytic performance of CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R). In this study, we successfully incorporate porosity and a cavity into a single structure, a porous copper nanocavity, derived from a pristine porous Cu 2 O template. We compare the CO 2 R catalytic performance of the porous copper nanocavity with that of a bulky catalyst derived from commercial Cu 2 O, and the former shows superior selectivity for multicarbon products. Operando Raman spectra suggest that the enhanced CO 2 R catalytic performance results from high *CO coverage and the confinement of intermediates in the porous copper nanocavity. These results may pave the way for the rational geometric design of selective catalysts for CO 2 R.
