Dendritic mesoporous silica confined nanozyme reactor for one-step and recyclable detection of glucose via biomimetic cascade catalysis

Boyu Chen,Jinghao He,Qingqing Wang,Jianjun Wang,Piaoping Yang

A multifunctional nanozyme-based reactor (FDIG) was rationally constructed by integrating Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, Ir nanoparticles, and glucose oxidase (GOx) within the spatially confined framework of dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSN). The DMSN scaffold provides abundant mesochannels and silanol groups for the uniform co-immobilization of catalytic components, enabling efficient oxidase–peroxidase cascade catalysis through a proximity-driven mechanism. In this confined architecture, GOx catalyzes glucose oxidation to produce H 2 O 2 , which is subsequently decomposed by Fe 3 O 4 /Ir nanozymes to generate hydroxyl radicals ( OH) for TMB oxidation, leading to a strong blue colorimetric response. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction between Fe 3 O 4 and Ir and the spatial confinement effect of DMSN, the FDIG nanoreactor exhibits remarkably enhanced peroxidase-like activity, high substrate affinity, and excellent structural robustness. Through a simple one-step detection, the optimized FDIG system demonstrated outstanding glucose-sensing performance with a wide linear range (50–1000 μM), a low detection limit (0.34 μM), and excellent selectivity. Besides, FDIG can be easily separated and reused due to the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, maintaining over 80% activity after five cycles. The sensor also showed reliable analytical performance in artificial saliva, achieving recovery rates of 95–96% with RSDs below 3.2%, confirming its applicability in complex biological environments. Moreover, the colorimetric response could be quantitatively analyzed via an RGB-based smartphone platform, allowing rapid and instrument-free glucose monitoring, thus demonstrating the potential of FDIG for noninvasive point-of-care testing.

Self-Amplifying Cascade Strategy Triggered Au NPs Assembly for Ultrasensitive cTnI Detection with Dynamic Light Scattering

Liansheng Ling,chen chen,Yingqing Li,xiaosong Yang,Ji Zhang

Here we report an ultrasensitive dynamic light scattering (DLS) immunosensor for cardiac troponin I (cTnI) leveraging a novel Self-cascading reaction synergistic amplification strategy by using metal organic frameworks (MOF) materials. This synergistic amplification system was designed within combined enzymatic (glucose oxidase, GOD) catalysis, acid-responsive MOF disintegration, Fenton reaction and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) stability modulation. When the target cTnI was present, sandwich structure was formed between multifunctional probes (Ab-GOD/Fe-MOF) and Ab modified 96-well plates, subsequently occurring self-cascading reactions with further addition of glucose: the glucose was oxidized into gluconic acid (creating an acidic micro-environment) by O2 under the catalysis of MOF - conjugated GOD and produced H2O2, the acidic micro-environment triggered the breakdown of Fe-MOF and the release of Fe2+, reacting with H2O2 via the Fenton reaction to etch the protective DNA layer that modified on Au NPs, enable the salt-induced aggregation of AuNPs. Crucially, the DLS assay achieved a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.5 × 10-13 g/mL, furthermore, this cascade amplification strategy realized the quantitative detection of cTnI in clinical samples with high sensitivity and specificity.

Degradation of Chlorophenols via Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Fe-Co Bimetallic Single Atom Catalyst

Zhen Zhang,Chenghui Luo,Mingxin Qin,Qvqv Jing,Lei Hao,Xinhua Xu

Fe-based single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) are able to enhance the Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation effectively just as a result of metal active sites that are precisely defined and atomically dispersed. The Fe 2 Co 1 CN catalyst synthesized in this work exhibits excellent catalytic activity toward PMS activation: the Fe 2 Co 1 CN/PMS system achieved nearly 100% 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) removal, a sharp contrast to only ∼1.5% removal by PMS alone. Corresponding, a mineralization rate of 78.3% was attained within 2 hours, coupled with extremely low metal leaching concentrations — evidencing the Fe 2 Co 1 CN catalyst’s superior structural stability and high catalytic efficiency in PMS activation. Together with its non-radical PMS activation mechanism, these merits highlight the catalyst’s potential as an efficient, stable, and selective candidate for practical wastewater treatment applications.

Tunable oxygen vacancies in BiOBr nanosheets: Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride and perfluorooctanoic acid with distinct mechanisms

Qi Zeng,Chu-Ya Wang,Guangcan Zhu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TTCH) are typical emerging pollutants with distinct molecular structures. TTCH contains C–H bonds in its molecule, but PFOA does not contain C-H bonds. The absence of C–H bonds makes PFOA insensitive to free radicals such as •OH. This structural difference poses a significant challenge for the efficient degradation of both pollutants. In this study, BiOBr nanosheets with adjustable concentrations of oxygen vacancies (OVs) were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal process. The photocatalytic efficiencies of MP2-BiOBr for PFOA and TTCH degradation were 3.93 and 3.89 times those of BiOBr. Electrochemical results indicated that the improvement in charge separation efficiency was the primary factor enhancing the photocatalytic performance of catalysts after the introduction of OVs. Additionally, the photocatalytic degradation of TTCH mainly involved active species •O 2 − , while PFOA was degraded through a direct oxidation process by photogenerated h + . Two possible decomposition pathways of PFOA over MP2-BiOBr are illustrated. Furthermore, The structure-performance relationship between OV-modified BiOBr and improved photocatalytic performance was established. This study presents a facile method for introducing OVs into BiOBr and provides some new insights into the mechanisms of pollutant degradation. It offers a promising strategy for the efficient treatment of complex wastewater containing diverse contaminants.

Synergistic Adsorption and Degradation of Tetracycline by Municipal Sludge-Based Biochar

Shiyuan Liu,Xueqiang Zhu,Damao Xu,Lai Zhou,Xiaoyi Li

Tetracycline (TC), a widespread aquatic contaminant, poses significant ecological risks. In this study, municipal sludge-based biochar (BC) was prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis to assess its efficiency and mechanism for TC removal. Various sources of BC exhibited effective TC removal, with BC pyrolyzed at 800 °C demonstrating the highest adsorption capacity at 173.42   mg/g (K800). Quenching and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed that persistent free radicals (PFRs) in BC facilitate the generation of superoxide radical (⸱O 2 - ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), promoting efficient oxidative degradation of TC. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) characterization identified the mesoporous structure, C-O, C=O groups, graphitic/pyridine nitrogen, and the Si-O-Si framework as key active sites. In summary, BC effectively removes TC through a synergistic process combining adsorption and degradation, offering a promising remediation strategy.

A cellulose-based hybrid material (cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS2) for the combined adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of levofloxacin from aqueous solutions

Xinxin Zhu,Liting Wang,Joe R. Zhao,Shoujuan Wang,Magdi E. Gibril,Fangong Kong

The rising contamination of water resources by levofloxacin (LEV) requires advanced remediation strategies that exceed the capabilities of the conventional methods. This study reports the rational design of a novel, multi-functional cellulose-phytic acid/Fe-MoS 2 (cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 ) hybrid composite for the highly efficient removal of LEV via synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis. Cellulose served as sustainable substrate and phytic acid acted as a natural cross-linker to enhance the integration and distribution of Fe-MoS 2 onto cellulose substrate. This designed architecture results in enhanced hydrophilicity, minimized MoS 2 aggregation, and a maximized density of active sites, as confirmed by comprehensive characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, BET, LC-MS, EPR). The prepared composite demonstrated exceptional, temperature-dependent LEV adsorption capacities of up to 210.97 mg/g (95%) within 40 min, with kinetics and isotherms best described by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, indicative of chemisorption. The adsorption mechanism driven by a combination of electrostatic attraction, π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and coordination complexation, resulting in effective removal across a broad pH range (3−10). The cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 exhibited photocatalytic effect, achieving efficient degradation of levofloxacin (LEV) (98.5%) within short time (15 mins) into small molecules (CO 2 , H 2 O, NH 3 , NO 3 , F, …etc.) as confirmed with LC-MS, driven primarily by reactive species (•O 2 − , •OH, h + ). In addition, it was demonstrated good recyclability, maintaining high performance over five consecutive cycles. These findings suggest that the designed cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 composite could be used as a green and sustainable multifunctional material to simultaneously remove and degrade antibiotics from water environments.

Nonstoichiometric Copper Bismuth Oxide Catalyst Boosting Surface-Bound Cu(III)-Peroxo Intermediate for Selective Oxidation via Dark Peroxydisulfate Activation

Wei Rao,Yifan Jiang,Qiong Liu,Junjun Zhang,Die He,Rong Chen

While high-valent copper intermediates are pivotal for efficient peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation, their generation and role in heterogeneous catalysis remain unclear. Herein, we demonstrate that a nonstoichiometric Cu 0.84 Bi 2.08 O 4 catalyst enables the dark activation of PDS via a novel pathway dominated by a surface-bound Cu(III)-peroxo intermediate ( ≡ Cu(III)-O−O−SO 3 ). A suite of spectroscopic and chemical probes revealed that this Cu(III)-peroxo species, along with superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ), acts as the primary oxidant, enabling the highly selective and rapid degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and other phenolic pollutants. Furthermore, H 2 O 2 generated from PDS hydrolysis synergistically participates in the reaction, accounting for the exceptionally high PDS utilization efficiency of the system. The system exhibits remarkable robustness, maintaining high activity over a wide pH range (4–11) and demonstrating strong resistance to interference from ions. This study elucidates a distinct Cu(III)-peroxo-mediated mechanism and offers a new strategy for designing highly selective catalysts for environmental remediation.

Generation of Nitrite from Residual Urea on Leafy Vegetables Caused by Water Vapor Condensation

Dong Liu,Songkai Zhu,Jiayang Li,Yuexing Zhang,Yu Xia,Yong Liang,Bolei Chen

Leaves are ubiquitous substrates for multiphase reactions, with growing evidence indicating that various multiphase reactions occurring on leaf surfaces influence the transformation of chemicals adsorbed by leaves. However, the critical role of ambient water in mediating such multiphase reactions on leaf surfaces has often been overlooked. Here, using isotopic tracing techniques, we demonstrate that reactive oxygen species generated in the leaf surface condensate can mediate the oxidation of urea adsorbed on leaves, leading to the formation of nitrite (NO2–). This phenomenon is widespread across various leafy vegetables. At 5 °C and an 80% relative humidity (RH), condensate-mediated oxidation of residual urea on leaf surfaces resulted in NO2– accumulation exceeding the food limit standard. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH), amino radicals (•NH2), and nitric oxide radicals (•NO) were produced during water vapor condensation, collectively driving the conversion from urea to NO2–. Density functional theory calculations verified that radical-mediated transformation occurs spontaneously. Further studies indicate that controlling urea residues on vegetable leaves below 60 ppm and maintaining RH in cold storage below 60% can effectively suppress NO2– formation. Our results demonstrate that water vapor condensation on leaf surfaces can influence the oxidation of organic compounds adsorbed by leaves, providing new insights into the environmental transformation of organic pollutants on plant surfaces.

Contact-Electro-Catalysis for Dye Degradation Using Polymer Composites Fabricated under Cyclic Pulsating Pressure

Shun Liu,Chenhu Yuan,Lanwei Li,Weijian Wu,Wenyu Jiang,Cong Shi,Jinping Qu,Zhaoxia Huang

Contact-electro-catalysis (CEC) can degrade organic pollutants by inducing surface electron transfer and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) through mechanical stimulation, making it a highly efficient and cost-effective wastewater treatment method in recent years. However, the materials used for CEC are limited to certain electronegative organic polymers, and research on the development of polymer/inorganic composite materials with outstanding comprehensive effects is still relatively scarce. In this work, a kind of polyvinylidene difluoride/barium titanate (PVDF/BTO) composite is proposed, with BTO uniformly dispersed on the surface of PVDF to improve dispersibility and catalytic activity. Cyclic pulsating pressure (CPP) technique is applied to regulate the powders’ microstructure, enhancing their charge transfer and catalytic efficiency. Results show that the powders prepared with CPP achieved a methyl orange (MO) dye degradation rate of approximately 92% within 240 min, compared to around 55% for the powders prepared by conventional pressure molding (CPM), which is attributed to the enhanced charge accumulation capacity of the CPP powders, enabling continuous charge transfer during triboelectric and piezoelectric responses, to improve catalytic efficiency. In this work, we not only provide a sustainable solution for efficient dye wastewater treatment but also offer fundamental insights into further development of the contact-electro-catalysis technology.

Bicarbonate-triggered in-situ epitaxial construction of lattice matched NaBiO3/Bi2O2CO3 Z-scheme heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: Boosted carrier separation and mechanism insight

Zhixiong Yang,Xinyue Liu,Xiaobin Hao,Haibo Yin,Yuan Li,Gaoke Zhang

Conventional methods often construct heterojunctions with lattice mismatch and disordered interfaces, suppressing interfacial charge-transfer and weakening photocatalytic activity. Although epitaxial construction could obtain lattice-matched heterojunctions and then boost their carrier separation, constructing such structures under mild conditions remains challenging. Herein, we successfully prepare a lattice matched NaBiO 3 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (NBO/BOC) of 95.8% by a facile bicarbonate (HCO 3 - )-triggered in-situ epitaxial strategy, which removes 98.2% metronidazole, representing an 8.25-fold enhancement over the HCO 3 - -free control, with an apparent reaction rate constant of 0.004   min -1 . Detailed characterizations and experiments results demonstrate that this high removal activity derives from the highly lattice-matched of NBO/BOC heterojunction. That is, the lattice-matched heterointerface in NBO/BOC ensures efficient Z-scheme band coupling and enhances interfacial charge transfer under the coordination of the built-in electric field, boosting photocatalytic degradation activity of the pollutant. These findings demonstrate a sustainable strategy that leverages an inherent wastewater component to self-construct efficient photocatalytic heterojunctions for pollutant degradation.

Pathologically responsive ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu nanozymes with cascade antioxidant and angiogenic functions for myocardial ischemia-reperfusion treatment

Jian Xu,Susu Zhang,Yu Yang,Xingwei Wei,Yunteng Fang,Zhilin Wang,Linwen Lan,Jiayi Shen,Enqian Liu,Wuming Hu,Tingting Hu,Chaojie Yu,Ruizheng Liang,Lingchun Lyu

Rationale: Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI/R) injury induces apoptosis, metabolic dysregulation, and ventricular remodeling through complex pathological mechanisms. Although nanozyme engineering has the potential for antioxidation, reoxygenation, and pro-vascularization, achieving responsive modulation of the pathological microenvironment remains significantly challenging. Methods: A layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based nanozyme (ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu) was synthesized via a low-temperature hydrothermal/isomorphic substitution method for MI/R treatment. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging ability and responsive ion release performance of ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu were evaluated through various spectroscopic characterization methods. The biosafety and therapeutic efficiency of ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu-BSA nanozymes were assessed by in vitro and in vivo experiments. Results: ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu demonstrated cascade superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, effectively overcoming acidic microenvironment limitations to maintain CAT activity rather than peroxidase (POD) activity while scavenging ROS to generate oxygen, with a ROS scavenging capacity 2.97 times that of Fe 3 O 4 . Moreover, the acid-triggered Sr 2+ release promoted vascular regeneration and synergistically improved the ischemic-hypoxic microenvironment. Consequently, after bovine serum albumin (BSA) modification, ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu-BSA demonstrated excellent cytoprotective effects, reducing the cardiomyocyte apoptosis rates to 9.4% ( in vitro ) and 20.7% ( in vivo ) of the levels in the MI/R group. In vivo studies further validated that ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu-BSA enhanced cardiac function and attenuated ventricular remodeling by inhibiting oxidative stress and promoting angiogenesis. Mechanistically, ZnSrMo-LDH/Cu-BSA provided a cardioprotective effect by inhibiting the TGF-β signaling pathway, thereby alleviating cell damage caused by MI/R. Conclusions: The pathologically responsive LDH-based nanozyme represents a promising avenue for MI/R treatment.

Sustained hydrogen peroxide production via MXene-functionalized supramolecular docking

Sun Jiaxun,Zhang Yuanming,Lu Wanheng,Ong Wei Li,Pan Xinglong,Song Wentao,Li Zhonghua,Li Zhaosheng,Ho Ghim Wei

Direct photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) from air and water using metal/covalent-organic frameworks offers a sustainable alternative to the conventional energy-intensive anthraquinone process. However, current systems suffer from short operational lifetimes typically 10–100 h due to mismatches between O 2 capture efficiency and multielectron redox kinetics. Here, we report a supramolecular platform that integrates O 2 capture, H 2 O 2 synthesis, and in situ utilization, enabling continuous H 2 O 2 production for over 1000 h without sacrificial agents. Mesoporous bromine-substituted COFs are hydrogen-bonded to photothermal MXene, providing organized O 2 docking sites and columnar charge transport via σ-σ interactions and π-π stacking. Through a dual-pathway mechanism, the architecture achieves a competitive H 2 O 2 production rate of 2878 μmol g −1 h −1 , alongside complete pollutant removal and durable operation across diverse water sources and outdoor conditions. This work demonstrates a supramolecular design featuring programmable O 2 docking, directional charge transport, and localized H 2 O 2 utilization toward decentralized chemical manufacturing.
