Multicolor and multimodal luminescence in an Er3+ single-doped double perovskite for advanced anti-counterfeiting and encryption

Sixia Li,Peng Zhang,Zhenbing Wang,Yuzhu Yang,Xuan Miao,Weisheng Liu

Multicolor and multimodal luminescence materials play crucial roles in anti-counterfeiting and encryption technologies due to their attractive properties of colorful, visually identifiable emissions and distinct emission modes in various excitation or stimulus channels. Nevertheless, integrating multicolor and multimodal luminescence via single rare-earth doping based on a single matrix remains a significant challenge. Herein, the Er3+ single-doped NaGdTi1.8Al0.2O6 double perovskite material achieves multicolor luminescence, afterglow, and upconversion emission by responding to several types of excitation ranging from UV to NIR and thermal disturbance. Spectral analysis has revealed that the varying excitation efficiency of the two luminescence centers at various excitation wavelengths leads to a shift in the overall emission color from red to green as the excitation wavelength transitions from 250 nm to 390 nm. Additionally, the energy transfer process between defect levels and Er3+ leads to multicolor luminescence from green to orange within a temperature range of 217 K to 417 K. These findings offer a facile and unique strategy for designing highly integrated multicolor and multimodal luminescence in a single matrix and promise applications in advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption technology.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation via Up-conversion in Y2O3:Yb3+, Er3+ Nanoparticles Under Near-infrared Light Irradiation

Yan Shaohan,Wang Lijing,Shan Pengnian,Lin Xue,Shi Weilong

Against the backdrop of increasing energy shortages, hydrogen energy has garnered significant attention as a green and clean alternative energy source. To fully exploit a broader portion of the solar spectrum, we designed a Y 2 O 3 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ /ZnIn 2 S 4 (denoted as YYE/ZIS) composite photocatalyst with a well-defined loaded structure of coating Y 2 O 3 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanoparticles on the ZnIn2S4 micro-flowers, capable of efficiently utilizing near-infrared (NIR) light through an up-conversion mechanism. The introduction of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions endows the Y 2 O 3 with excellent up-conversion luminescence properties, enabling the effective conversion of lowenergy NIR photons into high-energy visible light over YYE/ZIS composite, which subsequently activates the ZIS component for NIR-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production. Photoelectrochemical characterizations reveal that the loaded structure significantly facilitates efficient charge separation and migration at the interface, while markedly suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby enhancing the overall photocatalytic performance. Remarkably, the catalyst demonstrates excellent NIR-response hydrogen evolution performance (16.3 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 ) even in the absence of noble metal co-catalysts, such as Pt, achieving a hydrogen production rate approximately 10.9 times higher than that of pristine ZIS. This work proposes a novel approach for constructing up-conversion-enabled composite photocatalysts with rationally engineered interfacial architectures.

Thermal Quenching Resistant Luminescence and Multimodal Self-Calibrated Temperature Sensing Properties of Gd2(WO4)3:Er3+ Phosphors

Xianchang Ning,Yuting Wu,Yusheng Xu,Zhenbeina Deng,Tianyu Guo,Minghui Su,Dacheng Zhou,Qi Wang,Jianbei Qiu

Multimodal temperature sensing minimizes environmental interference through cross-validation by integrating both upconversion (UC) and downconversion (DC) modalities and exploiting differences in the thermal responses of emissive transitions in a single activator center. Er 3+ -doped Gd 2 (WO 4 ) 3 phosphors were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. This material nables multimodal self-calibrating temperature sensing based on both DC and UC luminescence and exhibits excellent resistance to thermal quenching. Notably, under 360 nm excitation (DC mode), the 530 nm emission maintained 96% of its intensity from 313 to 493 K, and under 980 nm excitation (UC mode) it remained within ±5% from 313 to 573 K. Additionally, the 824 nm emission (under 980 nm excitation) exhibited a 3.37-fold enhancement from 313 to 573 K, attributed to thermally activated cross-relaxation (CR). We also explored a multimodal self-calibrating temperature sensing system using fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) techniques, employing the I 530 /I 551 ratio in the DC mode and the I 824 /I 551 ratio in the UC mode. Notably, the I 824 /I 551 ratio achieved a maximum relative sensitivity (S r ) of 2.21% K -1 at 313 K. A dual-mode temperature fusion platform was developed by integrating DC and UC channels. In this scheme, the multimodal FIR strategy synergistically minimizes systematic errors through cross-validation while enhancing reliability by combining thermal-quenching resistance and thermally activated emission. This work establishes a novel dual-mode material system framework for high-accuracy optical thermometry.

Dual-emission-center strategy in Ca3Ga4O9:Er3+/Sm3+ enables color-tunable afterglow for multimodal luminescent encryption materials

Yunfei Wang,Sixia Li,Yuzhu Yang,Peng Zhang,Wenfei Qin,Sai Zhou,Xuan Miao,Zenggang Lin,Weisheng Liu

Materials exhibiting long-persistent luminescence (LPL) in the visible spectrum hold pivotal importance for anti-counterfeiting and encryption. Nevertheless, conventional LPL materials generally possess a fixed afterglow color. This constraint makes it imperative to develop multimodal luminescent systems featuring spectrally tunable afterglow. Herein, the Er3+/Sm3+ co-doped Ca3Ga4O9 phosphors achieve multicolor photoluminescence (PL), upconversion luminescence (UCL), and color-tunable LPL by responding to multiple excitations modes ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared radiation (NIR). Spectral analysis reveals a green-to-orange multicolor afterglow by varying the relative concentrations of Er3+ and Sm3+ ions. To unravel the mechanism of multicolor afterglow, afterglow spectra and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra are systematically employed to probe the trap distribution mediated by Er3+ and Sm3+ co-doping. Finally, their prospective application in optical anti-counterfeiting and information encryption is also systematically investigated based on the color-tunable LPL. This successful integration of multicolor, multimodal luminescence with color-tunable afterglow in a single host provides a novel platform for anti-counterfeiting and encryption, significantly expanding the visual diversity of displayable information.

Broadband Emission-Enabled Energy Transfer in Double Perovskites for Efficient Er3+-Driven Long-Wavelength Near-Infrared Optoelectronics

Ruixin Song,Yuhang Fang,Enhui Wang,Shangwei Zhou,Wei Li,Yuqi Wang,Tianyuan Wang,Renhuan Song,Hao Yang,Tingting Zhou,Hongwei Song,Donglei Zhou

High-efficiency near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) operating in 800-2000 nm spectral window are pivotal for advancing optical communication, biomedical imaging, and security sensing. Here, a strategy using double perovskite Cs 2 AgInCl 6 nanocrystals co-doped with Bi 3+ , Yb 3+ , and heavily doped Er 3+ is demonstrated to achieve efficient long-wavelength NIR emission. The double perovskite host with self-trapped excitons (STEs) property serves as an energy reservoir for subsequent transfer to Er 3+ . Bi 3+ doping induces lattice distortion, enhancing STEs formation and breaking octahedral symmetry around Er 3+ to boost the 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 15/2 transition. Yb 3+ as a sensitizer, bridges the energy gap between STEs and Er 3+ , facilitating efficient energy transfer to populate Er 3+ metastable states. This synergistic mechanism, enabled by double perovskite's broadband emission and homovalent doping tolerance, allows heavy Er 3+ loading (≥20% molar-ratio), driving a photoluminescence quantum yield of 31% at 1540 nm. NIR LEDs fabricated with these nanocrystals achieve a champion external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 1.79% at 1540 nm (average EQE: 1.49%) and maintain 50% emission intensity for 3.3 h under continuous operation. This work establishes double perovskites as a versatile platform for STEs-mediated NIR emission, offering a new paradigm for designing high-performance long-wavelength optoelectronic devices.

Enhanced the green emission in high-symmetry Er3+-doped SrF2 particles through introducing non-active Y3+ ions

Zuodong Liu,Qiyue Pan,Chengwei Zhang,Guo Zhang,Rui Liu,Tingting Xiong,Yongsheng Yu,Peng Liu,Qiangshan Jing

Er, Y:SrF 2 particles co-doped with various Y 3+ buffer ions were prepared after calcined as-synthesized particles at 600 °C, and the residual nitrates and –OH disappear drastically after calcination treatment. XRD and FE-SEM measurements were proposed to identify the crystal structures and morphologies of the Er, Y:SrF 2 particles, respectively. The emission spectra illustrated two distinct emission bands, which can be attributed to the 2 H 11/2 / 4 S 3/2  →  4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2  →  4 I 15/2 transitions of Er 3+ ions, respectively. The dependence of green to red emission intensity ratio R(g/r) and the decay curves on the Y 3+ buffer ions co-doping contents were investigated to elucidate the emission mechanisms. It was observed that the 2 H 11/2 / 4 S 3/2  →  4 I 15/2 transitions were enhanced relative to 4 F 9/2  →  4 I 15/2 red-emitting transition under 488 nm and 980 nm excitation in high-symmetry Er, Y:SrF 2 particles after co-doped with Y 3+ buffer ions.

Influence of Al/Er ratio on the optical properties and structures of Er3+/ Al3+ co-doped silica glasses

Jiao Yan,Guo Mengting,Wang Renle,Shao Chongyun,Hu Lili

In this study, Er 3+ /Al 3+ co-doped silica glasses with various Al/Er ratios ranging from 0 to 200 and a constant Er 2 O 3 amount were prepared using the sol-gel method combined with high-temperature vacuum sintering. The absorption, emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetime of Er 3+ ions were recorded and the absorption and emission cross sections were calculated. Using Raman, 27 Al and 29 Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR), 27 Al triple-quantum (TQ)-MAS-NMR, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies, the physical and optical properties were correlated with the glass structural modifications due to the Al/Er ratio change. With the increase in the Al/Er ratio, the content of Al 3+ ions around the Er 3+ ions gradually increased. Meanwhile, the AlO 5 and AlO 6 polyhedrons increased at the expense of the AlO 4 and SiO 4 tetrahedrons, which resulted in an improved symmetry and better ionic Er–O bonds. These structural changes led to the site-to-site variations in the Er 3+ local environment and the changes in the ligand field strength of the Er–O bonds. This, in turn, resulted in the inhomogeneous broadening of the absorption and emission spectra, with a blue shift of both absorption and emission peaks and a decrease in both absorption and emission at 1.53  μ m. With the increase in Al/Er ratio, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the emission increased from 27.2 to 54.3 nm. The FWHM × emission cross section ( σ e m i ) parameter for evaluating broadband amplification behavior was 30.1 × 10 −20  cm 2  · nm. This work reveals the close relationship between the glass structure and the spectroscopic properties of Er 3+ ions and provides an important reference for the design of broadband amplifier materials in the field of optical communication.

Mixed-cation effect for enhanced L-band spectral broadening in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fluoro-sulfo-phosphate glasses

Weijie Zhu,Weichao Wang

The rapid expansion of data-intensive technologies such as 5G, AI, and cloud computing is pushing optical communication systems to their limits, necessitating the development of advanced materials to extend bandwidth into the L- and U-bands. Fluoro-sulfo-phosphate (FSP) glasses, owing to their multi-anionic compositions and tunable network structures, offer a promising platform for next-generation broadband fiber amplifiers. In this work, a mixed-cation approach employing K + and Ba 2+ is employed to manipulate the local structural environment and enhance glass-forming ability, lifetime (8.7–9.22 ms for Er-doped, ∼10 ms for Er 3 + /Yb 3+ co-doped), emission cross-section (0.59-0.70 × 10 − 20  cm 2 ), energy transfer efficiency (∼85 %), and thermal quenching resistance. Despite their similar sizes and electronegativities, K + and Ba 2+ exhibit contrasting field strengths and polarizabilities, enabling a controlled balance between network connectivity and local disorder. Thermodynamic modeling and experimental results confirm that the introduction of mixed cations significantly broadens the glass-forming region. The addition of AlF 3 further strengthens the network, allowing for the preparation of stable K/Ba-FSP glasses with improved mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. Spectroscopic analysis reveals a substantial enhancement in L-band emission efficiency and gain characteristics, with performance improvements ranging from 30 % to 150 % over conventional glass hosts. These findings position K/Ba-FSP glasses as a robust and high-performance candidate material system for broadband rare-earth-doped fiber amplifiers and lasers.

Long-circulating Er3+-doped Yb2O3 up-conversion nanoparticle as an in vivo X-Ray CT imaging contrast agent

Zhen Liu,Zhenhua Li,Jianhua Liu,Song Gu,Qinghai Yuan,Jinsong Ren,Xiaogang Qu

Nanoparticulate imaging agents offer excellent diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities due to their intense and stable output, strong target binding via multiple ligands, as well as tunable biodistribution profiles. In the present work, we designed and synthesized PEGylated Yb 2 O 3 :Er nanoparticles with high Yb content in single particle (denoted as PEG-UCNPs) suitable for both X-ray CT imaging and up-conversion imaging. These PEG-UCNPs were facile to construct, possessed excellent stability against in vivo environment, and held long blood circulation time . Cell-cytotoxicity assay, hemolyticity, and post-injection histology analysis further demonstrated the excellent biocompatibility, indicating the feasibilities of PEG-UCNPs for in vivo applications. Compared with routinely used Iobitridol in clinic, well-prepared PEG-UCNPs provided much significantly enhanced contrast at a clinical 120 kVp voltage. By doping 5% Er 3+ into the nanoparticles, PEG-UCNPs presented a long-term stable and nearly single-band red up-conversion emission upon continuous irradiation with an assistant of a 980 laser . In addition, pharmacokinetics , biodistribution, as well as clearance of nanoparticles were studied after intravenous injection in a mouse model, reflecting their overall safety. PEG-UCNPs composed of intrinsic up-conversion luminescence property, higher X-ray absorption over Iobitridol, as well as excellent biocompatibility represented a nanoplatform for biomedicine applications.

Solvothermal synthesis and upconversion properties in Yb3+/Ln3+ (Ln3+=Er3+/ Ho3+/ Tm3+) codoped In2O3 nanoparticles with fine stability

Yuchao Shi,Jing Li,Wenhao Cui,Yaru Peng,Yuxin Huang,Li Chen

Monodisperse In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) were firstly synthesized via solvothermal method in three-neck round-bottom flask. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) methods are used to characterize the prepared UCNPs. The size of monodisperse spheroid nanoparticles prepared can be controllable in 31 nm. The sample exhibits stronger upconversion luminescence (UCL) than reported In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ UCNPs with similar size. Furthermore, the obtained In 2 O 3 UCNPs, by coating the SiO 2 protecting layer, display fine stability. Simultaneously, the UCL properties and possible energy transfer process of In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ and In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ NPs have also been investigated by the spectra distribution and power dependence. The results indicate Yb 3+ /Er 3+ , Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ and Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ codoped In 2 O 3 UCNPs is a probable oxide upconverting material with small size and intense UCL for biological applications.

Effects of B-Site Substitution on Up-Conversion Luminescence and Ferroelectric Properties in Er3+-Doped Strontium Barium Niobate

Ao Y. C.,Shi Y.,Zhao C. Z.,Huang Y.,Shi J. Q.,Zhou K. R.,Zhou Q. J.,Li Z. P.,Wei T.

An effective route to regulate up-conversion luminescence (UCL) and polarization properties has been developed in tetragonal tungsten bronze ferroelectrics (TTBs). In this work, we have synthesized a series of (Sr 0.29 Er 0.01 )Ba 0.7 Nb 2− x Mo x O 6 (SBN-A x , 0 ≤  x  ≤ 0.1) and Sr 0.3 Ba 0.7 (Nb 1.99− x Mo x Er 0.01 )O 6 (SBN-B x , 0 ≤  x  ≤ 0.1) ceramics. Through investigating the UCL spectra of SBN-A x and SBN-B x ceramics, markedly different enhancement effects of UCL intensity have been revealed which can be attributed to the peculiar structural feature of TTBs. Furthermore, temperature sensing, dielectric and ferroelectric properties have also confirmed to display B -site substitution-dependent intriguing behaviors.
