Porous carbon spheres with a diameter of 1–2 cm were prepared via a simple carbonization of the fruit of Liquidambar formosana . After carbonization, the spherical structure and inner finger-like pores were maintained with high resistance to impact. Due to the porous structure and the hydrophobic nature, the carbonized fruit of Liquidambar formosana can float on the water surface and show a super-fast oil or organic solvent sorption ability (sorption saturation can be achieved within 1–2 min). Moreover, about 99% of adsorbed oil can be easily removed from spheres via organic solvent such as ethanol or hexane, which shows good recyclability of samples. In general, considering the low-cost and abundance of raw material collected from nature and the facile synthetic process (only by carbonization), the centimeter-sized porous spheres via the carbonization of fruit of Liquidambar formosana are very promising to be used for the application of oil or organic solvent spill cleanup.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation has been proven to promote human health. The effect of different LAB fermentation on the quality of Opuntia ficus-indica fruit juice (OFIJ) was investigated. OFIJ was an excellent substrate for fermentation, with colony counts of more than 8 log CFU/mL after fermentation. The fermentation altered the acid and sugar contents. Simultaneously, the total phenolic and anthocyanin contents significantly increased. Antioxidant activity enhanced significantly in Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HNU082-fermented OFIJ, primarily in ABTS + (increased by 16.81%) and DPPH (increased by 23.62%) free radical scavenging ability. Lacticaseibacillus paracasei HNU502-fermented OFIJ showed the most potent inhibition of xanthine oxidase (IC 50 = 31.01 ± 3.88 mg TAC/L). Analysis of volatile and non-volatile compounds indicated that fermentation changed the flavor quality and metabolic profiles and caused the most significant modifications in amino acid metabolism. These findings offer valuable information into processing of OFIJ, making it a great choice for functional foods.

The effects of defatting and dephenolization treatments on the structural, physico-chemical and technological properties of passion fruit epicarp flour (PFEF) were evaluated in this research. The FT-IR, SEM and XRD results illustrated that defatted and defree phenolics did not change the basic chemical structure of PFEF, while debound phenolics treatment hydrolyzed the ester bonds between dietary fiber and polyphenols and hydrolyzed the amorphous region of dietary fiber, resulting in self-assembly into a larger aggregate with a compact texture. All three kinds of treatment could improve the flowability of passion fruit epicarp flour to some extent. In addition, dephenolization treatment brought about an obvious change in the technological properties of PFEF, and removal of free polyphenols or bound polyphenols contributed to two completely different effects on partial indicators. These properties may be important for their value-added utilization.

Hydrogels show great potential in agriculture and other fields due to their excellent water absorption. However, traditional hydrogels are predominantly made from petroleum-based materials, which are difficult to degrade and pose environmental challenges. Additionally, traditional hydrogels exhibit inadequate mechanical properties, making the development of biodegradable hydrogels with high mechanical strength and cost-effectiveness a significant challenge. This study utilizes cassava starch as the primary framework, polyvinyl alcohol as the flexible soft segment, and crosslinks with epichlorohydrin to synthesize a novel biodegradable and cost-effective hydrogel. The hydrogel underwent modification through the incorporation of carboxylated nanofibers and sodium bicarbonate. The hydrogel's characteristics were assessed through Fourier infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, swelling examination, and compressive stress evaluation. The primary focus was placed on investigating the hydrogel's mechanical properties and its swelling behavior in aqueous solutions. The influence of nanofiber content on the hydrogel's properties was appraised. The integration of nanofibers significantly enhanced the compressive strength of the hydrogel, reaching an impressive 135.35 kPa, which is notably higher than the 33.88 kPa displayed by the conventional starch hydrogel. Simultaneously, when compared to the unaltered common starch hydrogel, the hydrogel fortified with nano-fibrils exhibited improvements in the swelling rate and thermal stability, exhibiting an increase of 20.54% and 12.20%, respectively. To address the rapid release rate of chlorine dioxide, the new hydrogel was dried, then separately absorbed sodium chlorite and citric acid, and subsequently stacked to create a binary solid slow-release chlorine dioxide system. The actual effect of the slow-release system on the preservation of fruits was tested using cherry tomatoes as experimental subjects. The results showed that the deterioration rate and vitamin C retention rate of cherry tomatoes were significantly improved under the action of the slow-release system. The loss of vitamin C in cherry tomatoes under the influence of the SSRCD hydrogel system was 37.73% lower than that observed in the control group. Due to its good mechanical properties and economy, this innovative hydrogel is not only suitable for applications in the field of fruit preservation but is also expected to be widely used in public health, medical and various other domains.

Cellulose-based packaging films represent a significant direction in sustainable materials science. However, their application is often hindered by the challenge of low water vapor barrier properties under high humidity conditions. In this work, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/Mica@TiO 2 (titanium dioxide) composite films with high water vapor barrier and water resistance were prepared via the green process, including acid-assisted gelation, cyclic freeze-thaw, and directional deposition. Flake Mica@TiO 2 extends the water vapor transport path and improves the stability of the water vapor barrier. Furthermore, the Passive Radiative Cooling (PRC) effect of TiO 2 contributes to the composite film's high reflectance (93.81 %) and emittance (96.57 %) of sunlight, which reduces the film's temperature by over 12.1 °C and effectively hinders the diffusion and transport of water vapor. The water vapor permeability coefficient (WVP) of the composite film is as low as 28.62 × 10 −12 ·g·m/m 2 ·Pa·s (37 °C, 65 % Relative Humidity (RH)). In addition, the composite film exhibits high wet tensile strength (28.9 MPa), excellent UV shielding rate (93.12 %), and antibacterial performance (98.5 % inhibition against Escherichia coli (E. coli) ). This multifunctional V-CMC/Mica@TiO 2 composite film provides an innovative, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient solution for food preservation and is expected to promote the sustainable development of the food packaging industry.

Carvacrol, a natural plant compound with antibacterial, antioxidant, and various biological activities, serves as the basis for developing a micro-emulsion fruit and vegetable cleaner. The study found that carvacrol demonstrated a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging between 0.25 and 0.5 mg/mL against four foodborne pathogenic bacteria and three spoilage fungi. The formulated cleaner, containing 67 mg/mL of carvacrol, demonstrated superior characteristics (a particle size of 228 nm, an absolute zeta potential of 21.4 mv, and a stability coefficient of 91.2%). Remarkably, the cleaner remained stable when stored at room temperature for at least 3 months. Its efficacy against pesticides ranged from 76% to 91%. The cleaning effectively inhibited microbial colonies and the decay rate of cherry tomatoes during storage at 4 °C. Furthermore, the cleaning treatment was found to minimize changes in color and hardness. Overall, this study provides evidence that a fruit and vegetable cleaner based on carvacrol enhances the safety of the food industry effectively.

The evolution of production and lifestyle patterns has led to an increasing demand for multifunctional packaging materials that exceed the capabilities of traditional single-function options, thus driving continuous innovation in the field. In this study, a novel approach is presented, where camellia seed cake protein, derived from camellia seed oil production by-products, is incorporated into sodium alginate to create biobased active packaging films. The antioxidant and UV-shielding properties of the sodium alginate-camellia seed cake protein films are enhanced by the incorporation of camellia seed cake protein. A closely intertwined structure is created between sodium alginate and camellia seed cake protein through electrostatic interactions, resulting in effective water vapor barrier capabilities. Furthermore, the active packaging films exhibit antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus , providing significant advantages for fruit preservation. This research is essential in delaying fruit spoilage, extending shelf life, and providing new insights into the development of biobased multifunctional food packaging materials.

Camellia oleifera Abel . is a unique and important edible oil crop in China. The quality and high yield of C. oleifera are closely related to cultivation, management and back-end processing and storage. However, studies on the growth and development, drying treatment and back-end storage of C. oleifera are not comprehensive enough. Therefore, the phenotypic characteristics of C.oleifera fruits during growth and ripening were studied and the effects of four different drying methods including room temperature drying (SW), hot air drying (RF, 65 °C), vacuum drying (ZG, 50 °C, 0.6 Mpa) and freeze drying (LD) on the oil content of C.oleifera seeds (COS) were discussed. At the same time, the changes of the main components and nutrients of C.oleifera kernel oil (COKO) under room temperature storage (SG) and 4 °C frozen storage (LC) were also investigated. The results of the study showed that C. oleifera cultivar ‘Changlin40’ exhibited an S-shaped curve in fruit growth and development. In addition, the oil content initially increased and then remained stable, and the soluble protein and starch contents increased with increasing fruit maturity, but the soluble sugar content increased rapidly at the early stage of fruit development and gradually decreased at the later stage. The maximum content of squalene in the oil obtained by vacuum drying was 80.578 μg/g. The oil content of COS treated by RF was 55.31%, significantly higher than the other treatments. In addition, it was also found that with increasing duration of SG, the acid and peroxide values of COKO increased significantly and the nutrients such as tocopherol, squalene and sterol decreased significantly, which was exactly the opposite of LC, indicating that LC could reduce the loss of nutrients during storage. This study can provide a theoretical basis for field management, screening of drying methods and subsequent storage of C. oleifera .

Gardenia fruit oil (GFO) is a new emerging edible woody oil with few investigations of its’ refinement process. In this study, different degumming, deacidification and bleaching technologies were introduced for realizing moderate refining of the GFO based on the preservation of bioactive micronutrients. Firstly, a simple multi-stage solid phase extraction (SPE) combined with a lab- affordable HPLC-UV instrument was developed for determinations of several vital biological constituents, such as crocetin, geniposide, polyphenols, phytosterols and squalene in the GFO. Satisfactory limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), recovery, intra-day and inter-day precision were obtained. Subsequently, changes of those phytochemicals during three types of degumming, followed by three kinds of deacidification and then three ways of bleaching were investigated, offering insightful suggestions for achieving moderate refining of the GFO. Finally, the refined GFO might be suggested as a potential functional edible oil with valuable micronutrients. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating moderate refinement techniques for GFO, as well as developing novel methods for phytonutrients analysis in the GFO.

In practical sweet cherry production, grafting onto rootstocks is a common practice to enhance environmental adaptability. Rootstocks play a crucial role in influencing scion growth and fruit quality by regulating the absorption and utilization of mineral elements. In this study, the influence of five rootstocks with or without root fertilization during the fruit color conversion period on the fruit quality of sweet cherry ‘Summit’ was observed. The physicochemical characteristics, external color characteristics, and total anthocyanin content of ‘Summit’ were significantly affected by both rootstock and fertilization, with an interaction between the two factors. The content of certain sugar components, organic acid components and phenolic acid components in ‘Summit’ were significantly affected by rootstocks and fertilization. ‘Summit’ grafted on Gisela 5 and H22 exhibited higher sugar content, while ‘Summit’ grafted on H11 and H17 exhibited higher organic and phenolic acid content.

Magnetic N -doped carbon nanotubes were firstly applied as adsorbent in food analysis for pre-concentration of bisphenols in fruit juices followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry determination. The magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The adsorption conditions were further optimized by response surface methodology. Under optimal conditions, the method provided good linearity with correlation coefficient ( r ≥ 0.9979), excellent intermediate precisions (2.71–5.91%, n = 3), low limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0.43 to 2.47 ng L −1 , and satisfying recoveries of three juice samples (between 90.6% and 101%).

In this study, a simple one-pot method was employed to synthesize an iron-nickel-carbon composite material. Glucose-derived mesoporous carbon spheres (CS) were used as a template, while urea served as a linking agent. Well-defined iron-nickel nanoparticles (Fe-Ni NPs) were incorporated into the CS to form a passion fruit-shaped structure. The resulting FeNi/CS catalyst exhibits excellent synergistic effects, effectively promoting electron transfer and charge migration. This composite material also demonstrates outstanding electrocatalytic performance for detecting nitrobenzene (NB). The results show a wide detection linear range from 1 to 1000 μM, with a low detection limit of 0.12 μM, as well as good anti-interference capability and high sensitivity. Furthermore, NB monitoring in real water samples yields satisfactory recovery rates ranging from 97.18 % to 102.75 %. The unique electrochemical sensor offers a novel approach for NB detection.
