In this work, Ag/AgCl/FeOCl (Ag–Fe) catalysts were successfully prepared via multistep routes in which Ag was uniformly anchored to the enriched Cl sites provided by exfoliated FeOCl nanosheets. Among these Ag–Fe catalysts, 5% Ag–Fe exhibited the highest pseudo first-order kinetic constant 0.1056 min −1 for photo-Fenton degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), which was 11 times higher than that of FeOCl (0.0096 min −1 ). Ag–Fe catalysts exposed more coordinatively unsaturated Fe active sites to coordinate with H 2 O 2 due to the cleavage of Fe–Cl bond. The exposed coordinatively unsaturated Fe(III) active sites could capture the photoinduced electrons and reduce them to Fe(II), which boosted the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Meanwhile, the photogenerated electrons of Ag 0 transferred to the FeOCl, promoting the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). In addition, the intensified visible light adsorption (SPR effect) was achieved after introducing Ag/AgCl nanoparticles on exfoliated FeOCl. Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and holes (h + ) were determined as the main reactive oxidative species (ROS) in the photo-Fenton degradation process.

In recent years, it has been found that Cu2+, Fe3+, and amino acids play an irreplaceable and subtle role in organisms and have attracted the considerable attention of many researchers. Therefore, it is vital to design visual indicators to reveal the relationships between metal ions and amino acids. However, there have been few reports on this vigorous subject. Fortunately, based on the different coordination effects between metal ions and boron groups, we have designed an accessible fluorescent probe (PSI-A). Borane was introduced as an ion-sensitive group to form a novel POSS-based fluorescent probe, which achieves fascinating performance, in situ dynamic multiple detection, excellent photostability, and enervative biological toxicity. PSI-A exhibited predominant selectivity and sensitivity to Cu2+/amino acids and Fe3+/amino acids sequence reactions in HepG2 cells and zebrafish. The fluorescence of PSI-A was quenched by Cu2+, which can be recovered by adding Asp, Ser, Arg, Ace or Trp. Additionally, the fluorescence of PSI-A quenched by Fe3+ can be restored after adding Asp. PSI-A is available to monitor Cu2+/amino acids and Fe3+/amino acids sequence reactions and can be repeated for at least three consecutive cycles without a fatigued performance. Therefore, this multifunctional fluorescent probe may have prospective application potentials in the biological field.

A surface positively charged nanofiltration (NF) membrane was successfully constructed to effectively remove heavy metal ions by co-deposition and quaternization strategy. The combination between Fe 3+ and H 2 O 2 accelerated the co -deposition of tannic acid (TA) and polyvinyl amine (PVAM) on the membrane surface. The mechanism by which metal ions accelerated co-deposition process to regulate membrane surface structure was elucidated. The convenient quaternary ammonium modification was carried out by reacting glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (GTMAC), which significantly increased the potential and density of the membrane surface. The membrane had a high retention rate for heavy metal ions (1000 ppm (mg· L −1 ), Cr 3+ (94.6 %), Fe 3+ (93.7 %), Cu 2+ (92.1 %), Ni 2+ (90.2 %)), while maintaining an excellent water permeance (27.8 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). The membrane also presented outstanding separation performance for rare earth metal ion. In particular, the retention rate for 500 ppm (mg·L −1 ) Ce 3+ was 95.3 %. The relationship between membrane surface potential, pore size and rejection of heavy metal revealed the removal mechanism. Furthermore, the membrane exhibited excellent acid-base resistance and long-term operation stability. This study supplies an effective surface modification method for preparing hollow fiber NF membranes used for removing heavy metal and recovering rare earth metal from wastewater.

In this study, heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst, nano-Fe° encapsulated in hydrothermal carbon (Fe°/HTCC), was prepared via a green chemistry route, aiming at increasing the degradation efficiency of p-chlorophenol (4-CP) by controlling the stability of the catalyst and Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling in the advanced oxidation process. The degradation of 4-CP by heterogeneous Fenton reactions was conducted with the assistance of visible light, which was monitored with the aid of the HPLC and total organic carbon analysis. The results revealed that Fe°/HTCC composite markedly enhanced both the degradation (100 %) and the mineralization efficiency (∼73.9 %) for 100 mg/L 4-CP within 60 min at pH 4.0. More importantly, the catalyst presented a high stability to resist the side oxidation, where the removal efficiency was maintained even after 5 successive cycling experiments. Electron spin resonance confirmed that in the presence of both HTCC and visible light irradiation greatly enhanced the production of •OH for the degradation and mineralization of 4-CP, which can be attributed to the enhancement of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling. This study paves a new way toward the rational design of Fe°–carbon composites as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts for potential applications into wastewater treatment.

A novel macroporous (~150 μm) double network hydrogel (TR/PAA) was prepared from tea residue and acrylic acid, and its performance was systematically evaluated. The static adsorption experiments showed that gel exhibited high selectivity and adsorption capacity, ultrafast kinetics (~10 min) for Cr(III), Pb(II) and Fe(III). The adsorption behavior showed heterogeneous and chemisorption process adsorption capacities of 206.19, 253.16, and 94.88 mg g −1 for Cr(III), Pb(II) and Fe(III), respectively. In pluralistic systems, TR/PAA showed the adsorption order of Fe(III) > Cr(III) > Pb(II). Mechanism studies confirm that nitrogen and oxygen-containing functional groups play a major role in the adsorption process. In the fixed-bed column experiments, the treatment volume of simulated wastewater reached 1400 bed volumes (BV) (21.6 L), producing only 7 BV (323 mL) eluent. This work provides a new avenue for the combination of TR/PAA reuse and heavy metal removal, which is expected to be applied in actual wastewater treatment.

N,S-co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) were synthesized via a single-step solvothermal process by using sodium lignosulfonate and p-phenylenediamine as carbon/nitrogen/sulfur sources. The N,S-CDs have an average diameter of 2.02 ± 1 nm and display green fluorescence, with excitation/emission peak wavelengths at 380/540 nm for optimal fluorescence. Fluorescence is excitation wavelength-dependent and stable in aqueous salt solutions. The fluorescence of the N,S-CDs is selectively quenched by Fe(III) and Ag(I) ions. These ions can be quantified by fluorometry with a limit of detection of 1.7 μM for Fe(III) ions and 11.6 μM for Ag(I) ions. The N,S-CDs also undergo solvatochromism in that emission is green in water solution but blue in polar organic solvents such as ethanol or N,N-dimethylformamide. The color of fluorescence gradually shifts from green to blue when continuously increasing the fraction of organic solvent in water.
N,S-co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) are synthesized by using sodium lignosulfonate and p-phenylenediamine as C/N/S sources. The N,S-CDs can sensitively detect Fe(III) and Ag(I) ions based on fluorometry, and can be used as a solvatochromic probe.

Sustainable electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems are expected to alleviate the energy shortages and environmental crisis that are currently facing the world. To bring the large-scale deployment of these energy systems to reality, the development of highly efficient, sustainable, and stable electrocatalysts is key. In this work, an electrocatalyst composed of homonuclear paired Fe sites coordinated onto N-doped carbon, labelled as Fe2–N–C-900, is reported. The material is synthesized by preparing, and then pyrolyzing at 900 °C, Fe(III)-tetrapyridinylporphyrin-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The electrocatalyst displays excellent activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with an onset potential of 0.990 V vs. RHE, a positive half-wave potential of 0.869 V vs. RHE, and a limiting current density of 6.7 mA cm−2, which are all superior to those of the benchmark noble metal-based ORR catalyst Pt/C. This is attributed to its high-density of catalytically active Fe2–N6 sites, large electrochemically active surface area, and small charge transfer resistance. The electrocatalyst also functions well for the ORR on an air electrode in an aqueous zinc–air battery while showing high catalytic activity, remaining stable, and giving a peak power density of 166.3 mW cm−2. Its performance here, too, exceeds that of a Pt/C-based zinc–air battery.

This work demonstrated the synthesis of (4E)-4-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylideneamino)-1,2-dihydro-1,5- dimethyl-2-phenylpyrazol-3-one (DBDDP) for Fe (III) detection in aqueous media and in the core of silica cross-linked micellar nanoparticles in living cells. The free DBDDP performed fluorescence enhancement due to Fe (III)-promoted hydrolysis in a mixed aqueous solution, while the DBDDP-doped silica cross-linked micellar nanoparticles (DBDDP-SCMNPs) performed an electron-transfer based fluorescence quenching of Fe (III) in living cells. The quenching fluorescence of DBDDP-SCMNPs and the concentration of Fe (III) exhibited a linear correlation, which was in accordance with the Stern-Volmer equation. Moreover, DBDDP-SCMNPs showed a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 ppm and an excellent selectivity against other metal ions. Due to the good solubility and biocompatibility, DBDDP-SCMNPs could be applied as fluorescence quenching nanosensors in living cells.

Coupling dithionite (DNT) with FeVO 4 induced PMS activation (FeVO 4 /PMS/DNT) effectuates fast heterogeneous Fe(III) reduction to generate multitudinous reactive oxygen species (ROS) for fast degradation of carbamazepine (2.5 mg/L, >90 % degradation efficiency within 300 s) in batch mode. The Fe(III)/Fe(II) circulation propelled by DNT and reduced V species experiences two stages. DNT induces SO 2 − generation, which is a highly active species with strong reducibility for Fe and V reduction. The reduced V species donate electrons to ≡Fe(III) via Fe-O-V bond rather than directly react with PMS, implying introducing polyvalent V to modulate Fe-based materials intensifies DNT utilization and alleviates ROS quenching effects. Moreover, FeVO 4 crystalline form regains after reaction, and FeVO 4 /PMS/DNT system has an excellent reutilization and strong resistance to natural waters. Our discovery sheds new light on acceleration of heterogenous Fe(III)/Fe(II) circulation to promote Fenton-like oxidation , it may be a long-lasting strategy for water remediation.

Background Multifunctional carbon dots (CDs) have gained prominence in biosensing, cell imaging, and nanomedicine due to their tunable fluorescence, excellent biocompatibility, and surface functionalizability. However, blue/green-emitting CDs suffer from limited tissue penetration and autofluorescence interference. Iron ions (Fe 3+ ) and pyrophosphate ions (PPi) are crucial biomarkers in various biological processes, with deviations in their concentrations linked to various diseases including cancer. Therefore, the development of highly sensitive and selective sensors for Fe 3+ and PPi detection is vital. To address these challenges, we present red-emitting nickel-doped carbon dots (Ni-CDs) synthesized via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method, offering advantages for deep-tissue imaging and therapeutics. Results Herein, we report a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of nickel-doped CDs (Ni-CDs) that exhibit both paramagnetic responsiveness and red fluorescence ( λ ex / λ em = 475 nm/630 nm). Using citric acid and p-phenylenediamine as raw materials, we successfully fabricated Ni-CDs with high fluorescence quantum yield of 24 % and uniform size distribution (5.13 ± 0.04 nm). The Ni-CDs serve as an "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor for simultaneous detection of Fe 3+ and PPi with low detection limits of 0.051 μM and 0.31 μM, respectively. They demonstrate high sensitivity and selectivity in detecting Fe 3+ in real water samples and PPi in human urine and blood samples. Furthermore, Ni-CDs exhibit good biocompatibility and enable real-time visualization of intracellular Fe 3+ and PPi dynamics in cancer cells. Under 808 nm laser irradiation (1.5 W/cm 2 ), Ni-CDs achieve high photothermal conversion efficiency of 59.1 % and generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species, leading to synergistic photothermal/photodynamic cancer cell apoptosis of 98.8 %. Significance This "two-in-one" theranostic platform based on Ni-CDs overcomes traditional limitations of conventional blue/green-emitting CDs, offering deep-tissue compatibility and minimized background interference, and multifunctional integration. Our methodology provides a generalized design strategy for wavelength-engineered CD hybrids, enabling innovative applications in point-of-care diagnostics and precision oncology. The multifunctional properties of Ni-CDs highlight their potential to revolutionize biomedical research and clinical practice.

In Fenton-like processes, achieving rapid and efficient redox cycling of metal active centers remains a challenge. This study presents an innovative strategy that harnesses the mechanical energy of water flow to drive the redox cycling of metal active centers. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 heterojunction with interfacial Mo-S-Fe bridge bonds was constructed via a one-step hydrothermal method. Under the stimulation induced by water-flow mechanical, the piezoelectric effect of MoS 2 generates charge carriers, which are rapidly directed to Fe active sites through the Mo-S-Fe bonds. This process significantly accelerates the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and enhances H 2 O 2 activation, achieving 93.8% removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 60 min under water flow stimulation. The composite exhibits robust performance across a broad pH range (3.0-10.7) and in the presence of humic acid (HA) and coexisting anions, demonstrating its strong environmental adaptability. Spectroscopic evidence confirmed the formation of Mo-S-Fe bonds at the heterojunction interface. Mechanistic studies further revealed that the structure improves charge separation, promotes rapid electron transfer from MoS 2 to Fe sites, and strengthens H 2 O 2 adsorption, thereby synergistically boosting reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generation and the overall catalytic efficiency. This study proposes an innovative strategy that exploits mechanical forces generated by water flow to drive rapid redox cycling of active metal centers in Fenton-like reactions.

In the advanced oxidation process (AOPs) induced by sodium percarbonate (SPC), reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be scavenged by a large amount of dissolved Fe(II) released within a short time. To address this issue, a slow-release Fe(II) process is proposed in this study, thereby enhancing the degradation of contaminants. SPC/Fe(III)/amorphous boron (B) and SPC/Fe(III)/citric acid (CA) procedures were employed to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), with B as the reductant and CA as the chelator. Fluoranthene (FLT) removal in SPC/Fe(III)/B process contributed to HO•, while HO• and O 2 − • were responsible for FLT degradation via SPC/Fe(III)/CA system. SPC/Fe(III)/CA system exhibits more adaptability to intricate water quality circumstances compared to SPC/Fe(III)/B system. The bio-toxicity of FLT and their degradation intermediates was evaluated via the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.), revealing a reduction in oral rat LD50, developmental toxicity, mutagenicity, and bioconcentration factor of the degradation intermediates relative to FLT. Both amorphous B- or CA-assisted SPC/Fe(III) processes were shown to be eco-friendly through luminosity inhibition tests with Vibrio fischeri . Experiments on soil slurry revealed that SPC/Fe(III)/CA system was feasible for the removal of complex PAHs, directing the SPC-induced AOPs process for the remediation of PAHs contaminated soils and groundwater.
